Avoid home improvement headaches
Ask the right questions BEFORE you build! If you are
considering remodeling, adding a room, or any kind of home project, the Nevada County Contractors’Association offers you these helpful hints for avoiding unnecessary problems: Plan your project carefully Accurate plans or drawings will enable contractors to correctly determine the scope of the work and costs. Determine what type of contractor you will need. Check the contractor’s license Ask contractors for their pocket card, license number, and trade classifications. Then check their standing with the Contractors State License Board before you sign a contract or allow work to begin.
Check the contractors’ references Ask a prospective contractor for references in writing. Call previous customers and ask if they were satisfied with the work, or visit references and examine the work the contractor has completed.
Hire a licensed contractor Licensed contractors are subject to laws designed to protect both you and your project, and the Contractors State License Board can assist you with most difficulties involving licensed contractors. Remember: Unlicensed contracting is a crime! Get everything in writing No work or materials should be performed or furnished without authorization. Make all changes in writing, signed by you and the contractor, and retain one signed copy. Understand the contract Everything you and your contractor have agreed to must be included in your contract. Anything you sign may become a contract, so don’t sign a document until you completely understand what you are signing and agree to all the terms. Don’t let anyone rush you. Obtain the necessary permits Be sure your contractor obtains the necessary building permits from your local jurisdiction. The permit will insure that your project is inspected by qualified building
personnel; they will verify that your project is built to current building codes. This is for your safe protection. Do not hire unlicensed contractors Don’t put your property at risk. Use of unlicensed, uninsured, and unbonded contractors can put you and your property in jeopardy. You could be held financially responsible for injured workers or damage to property (yours and others) if proper insurance protection is not in place. Get what you should know before you hire a contractor The Contractors State License Board has produced two outstanding, easy-to-read publications to help consumers properly plan for and make informed decisions about dealing with contractors:“What You Should Know Before You Hire a Contractor”contains 34 pages with all you need to: • Select a reputable and qualified contractor. • Negotiate a clear contract. • Prevent disputes with the contractor. • Resolve disputes when they arise. “A Consumer Guide To Asbestos”is a
12-page booklet containing information to help building owners identify asbestos and the precautions needed to prevent harmful exposure to asbestos when planning for and undertaking its removal. Upon request, the Contractors State License Board provides information about a licensed contractor’s license and bond status, as well as pending and prior legal actions. If you want information about a contractor’s license status please call the Board’s toll-free telephone number: 1-800-321-CSLB or visit the Contractors State License Board Web Site: www.cslb.ca.gov. The evolution of the deck
By Rodger Mann Evolved Decks
There are about 40 million
wood decks in the United States, many of them 20 or more years old, according to the North American Deck and Railing Association. While these structures don’t collapse every day, when they do, people can be injured or killed. Many structural defects that can bring decks down are frighteningly common. While wood is good, it is a biological, organic material that succumbs to nature as it soaks in rain and snow, dries and heats in the sun, and expands and contracts time and time again. Slowly, it decomposes its way back to nature. If the wood deck is not treated or maintained on a consistent basis, wood rot and decay comes even quicker. According to Miriam – Webster, evolution is a process of change in a certain direction. Indeed, the deck has evolved. It is now a safe, secure, sleek, no-to-low maintenance entity. A proven technology has been introduced to the world of decking, light gauge steel framing. The beauty of light gauge steel is it has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any building material. It is non-combustible, does not burn and will not contribute fuel to the spread of a fire. It is inorganic and will not rot, warp, split, crack or creep, nor is it vulnerable to fungi or termites. The light gauge steel is dimensionally stable and does not expand or contract with moisture content. It is a consistent material quality and is produced in strict accordance with national standards. Its high strength results in safer structures, less maintenance and slower aging of structure. With light gauge steel there is less probability of foundation problems where less weight results in less movement. Light gauge steel framed decks even have the green aspect where the steel is 100% recyclable. More steel is recycled in North America each year than aluminum, plastic and glass combined. Each year, steel recycling saves the energy equivalent to electrically pow-

EvolvedDecks (SCL# 609393) was created with the goal of providing high quality, cost effective, structurally, and environmentally sound decks. After many years of repairing and replacing dry rotted wood decks and consideration of the cost and environmental impact of yearly care for wood decks, the light gauge metal frame concept was born. ering about one- fifth of the households in the United States (or about 18 million homes for one year). Steel recycling programs reduce the solid waste stream resulting in saved landfill space and conservation of natural resources. Simply put,
solar is cheaper By Brandon Davis California Solar Electric Company Sales Manager
To put it simply
if you are paying more than $150 a month for electricity you are paying too much. Installing a solar system on your home or business has never made more sense. Even with the end of the California rebate program earlier this year the price solar electricity is typically two to three times cheaper than the utility. Federal tax incentives will pay for 30% of your system on your home and up to 64% on your business or rental property. These programs may not last forever so don’t let them slip through your fingers. In the last couple of years we have seen creative financing completely eliminate the upfront cost for many. Most people start to see savings the day they turn on their system.
In this economy it can be difficult to find a place to invest where you can expect a solid return on your investment and not worry about fluctuations in the market. Solar typically pays for itself in the first 5 to 10 years and will pay for itself three to seven times during its useful life. I’d like to see your new deck or granite countertops do that! The tougher decision is how to choose a reliable company to design and install your system so you can enjoy these savings worry-free and trust that your system will live up to its 25 year warranty. A great place to start is the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners or NABCEP. NABCEP is national organization “dedicated to the
implementation of appropriate professional standards designed to protect consumers and the profession.” NABCEP.org has a Certified Professional search to help you find a reputable installer in your area. Focusing on ethical business practices and rigorous training and certification means that going with a NABCEP certified professional you will get the highest quality design and install. There are other ways to protect your solar investment. Many systems installed today come standard with online monitoring which means you can keep an eye on your systems performance and never miss a

we have all heard the ads about paints that work as both a primer and a finish. In the old days they were just called self priming paints. There are limits to what a self priming paint will do. Some exclusions are new plaster, new wood, glossy surfaces, stain damaged surfaces, damaged exterior wood, bare concrete and masonry, rusty metal, and the list goes on. Every paint job has its unique problems. Maybe the trim in your house has a glossy oil based enamel or what if your exterior sliding door is peeling and crack-

ing? For these you need to prime first. You wouldn’t use the same product to seal new drywall as you would to prime a rusty metal roof. If there was one “magic” primer that worked on every surface, then only one primer would be sold in stores, not 40. The same logic applies to the paint and primer types of products. It all depends on what you are painting, the condition of your old paint job and how much of a color change you are making. The point of this article is not to say the concept of a paint and primer is only a marketing ploy, but a lot of it’s purely that. It sounds like it would be so much easier to use one product that is both primer and paint. Less work and same results, right? Let us use the example of a room with brand new sheet rock and texture. Paint and primer products recommend two coats to achieve a uniform appearance for new drywall. In this example, we will say one coat requires two gallons, so two coats will require four gallons. Let’s say the paint and primer paint cost $35 per gallon, making a total paint cost of $140. However, what if you did this? Apply one coat of primer and one coat of paint. The drywall primer is only $20 per gallon and the finish paint is the same at $35 per gallon. In this example we spend $40 for primer and $70 for the paint making a total cost of $110. You saved over 20% by using a primer and it took the same amount of time. The point is every paint job is different. That is where we at Moule Paint and Glass come into the picture. We will ask the right questions to give you the right recommendation. Come see us and we will give you the best product for your home and budget.

has a new vocabulary – some of the words we are hearing every day in the Reuse community are so new they aren’t even in the Thesaurus yet. Without being a trend-watcher, the Habitat ReStore is speaking the language and is a must shop location for anyone looking to join the fun. The economy is on the mend.. right? That may be true, but one trend that was born out of the necessity to save money during the downturn will stick around, mainly because it is practical and well… fun. Creative people everywhere have come up with a way to remodel, reuse, recover, or just re-enjoy in ways that save money and appeal to their desire to reduce their footprint. What could be more thrilling than digging some old odds and ends out of your tool shed and creating a masterpiece to impress your guests and neighbors? When Nevada County Habitat for Humanity opened the ReStore in 2006 the practical business case was outlined as: raising funds for the Habitat affordable home building projects; providing a place to purchase used building materials for shoppers living on a strict budget; and having a place for contractors and local residents to donate items that might normally have to be disposed of in the local landfill. Good news! The ReStore is all that, but the surprise is how much more it has become. ReStore shoppers range from homeowners looking for a way to repair a leaky faucet on a budget, to artists looking for sculpture components, and now a new breed of contractor that sells their clients on the idea of repurposing to save money. Plus, there is the cool factor! A fast growing business sector called Repurposing is generating a lot of buzz. We learn about new companies practically every day who are making profitable businesses out of taking gently used items and turning them into brand new must have treasures for inside or outside the home. We have read about classes that are attracting people from every walk of life teaching students how to take previ-

ously perceived junk and turn it into something beautiful and new. With a little brightly colored paint and an old desk, you can create a mini garden feature for your front porch. Turn the drawers into flower planters and put some flower pots across the top and your front porch becomes a thing of beauty. Take a bunch of old watering cans, weld them into a tower, put a steel tub as a base and you have a water fountain that Pottery Barn would put in their display window! If you are an organized person who cleared out your garage in the spring and got rid of everything, you can find gently used items ready to be made new every day at the Habitat ReStore. You may have read recently in The Union about the Casa Del Campo a cozy vacation guest house that is a delightful gallery of everything repurposed. The owners and creators of the “casitas” purchase many of the fixtures, tiles, odds & ends, and furniture from the ReStore and infused them with creative inspiration to transform the property. This is a selling point to guests who not only enjoy the vibrant canvas around them, they can take a few ideas home with them. Social media has played a big role in the repurposing world. A great blog called Flea Market Gardening brings together all sorts of people who are creating beautiful landscapes on a budget, and they give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it yourself. They also have a Facebook page, as does Flop House Creations for promoting their interior design business. You guessed it - the designer shops at ReStore! So, go online and search for an idea to fill that empty corner in your living room, or that blank space in your backyard and then poke around for the hidden treasures in your garage – or, of course, at the Habitat ReStore! Not an artist or the creative type? Not to worry. ReStore has something for everyone. Need to replace your Washer? Dryer? Sofa? Coffee table? Furnishing your home or cabin? Your ReStore has it all!
This potty got a lot of attention at the ReStore. Staff put it together and lots of local people have purchased toilets for almost nothing and created this same thing as a garden feature.

Protect your home from costly water damage
Submitted by Byers Roofing
Winter is just around
the corner and you know what that means in Nevada County, wet, cold and icy weather ahead. The stormy rain and wind causes leftover debris from trees and rooftops to clog gutters. What many people don’t realize is that clogged gutters can lead to serious water damage to your home; damage that is often not covered by insurance. The main reason we attach gutters to our home is to help direct water flow away from the house, including your roof. Clean gutters protect siding, windows, doors and foundations from water damage and help protect flooding in basements. If gutters are clogged, they can’t channel the runoff water properly, and gutters will overflow. This overflow can spill over not only the front of the gutter, but also over the back of the gutter. The backflow is where the problem is greatest, as it can
penetrate your home. Water runoff can cause flooding in basements, which, of course, can cause damage to all the items you have stored there. Since most California homes don’t have basements, this is not an issue for most of us; however, an even worse fate can be a damaged foundation. When a large amount of water penetrates the foundation, it can weaken the foundation and cause structural damage. A weak foundation can lead to cracks in your drywall or outer walls, uneven sloping floors and doors that no longer fit properly in their moldings. Foundation
repair costs vary depending on the difficulty of the repair and the amount of preparation that is required in order to complete the repair, but it is generally in the several thousand dollar price point. Damage to your siding is another serious issue that water runoff from clogged gutters can cause. Not only can siding be stained by continual streams of dirty water, but water can also soak into or behind the siding, resulting in mildew and rot. By the time you notice this issue, you’ve got a really expensive problem on your hands. External mildew is bad enough, but what about when it seeps into internal your walls? Living in a home with mildew is not just unsightly and smelly, it’s downright unhealthy. Mold can pose serious health risks ranging from infection to respiratory disease to death. Most people have some form of allergic reaction to mold spores and fragments. The allergy may surface as a mild skin reaction or even as a severe respiratory disease. Reactions to mold can be immediate or they can gradually worsen over time with repeated ex-

posure. In people with weakened immune systems, through illness or disease, these allergic reactions can be more severe and harmful. Of course, if you detect any of these problems in your home, you will want to get them fixed immediately. Your first call may be to your home insurance company, but unfortunately many policies do not cover this type of water damage. Home insurance policies are often very specific about the causes of water damage, and while it seems like foundation problems, damaged siding or mold should be covered, the claim is often denied. The reason for denial is because the root of the problem was due to poor maintenance. If your gutters were kept clean and debris-free (a duty of the homeowner), none of the damage would have occurred. The best way to avoid clogged gutters is to install a gutter system that guarantees it will never clog. The only one-piece, seamless covered gutter is made by Byers LeafGuard Gutter Systems, headquartered locally in Grass Valley. The curvature of the LeafGuard design draws water into the trough, while leaves, twigs and debris roll over the edge to the ground. Byers’ LeafGuard gutters do not require maintenance. The company guarantees that if their gutters ever clog, they will clean them at no charge. The guarantee is valid as long as the customer owns the home, and is transferrable to the next owner as well. We still have several months ahead of rainy weather. Make sure your gutters are free of clogs, and that rainwater goes where it should – away from your walls and foundations. It could save you thousands of dollars in repairs…and your health! Byers’ Leaf Guard and Roofing Systems was founded in 1987 and has grown steadily to become one of the largest Leaf Guard companies in the country. Byers’ Leaf Guard works on a scientific principle known as liquid adhesion where rainwater clings to the curved hood and drops into the trough and debris rolls right over the edge. Call 530-272-8272, email info@byersleafguard.com or visit www.byersleafguard.com for more information. Byers’ Roofing Systems was the principle service of the company and still continues its tradition of guaranteed quality and unbeatable service in roofing. Byers’ is a factory-certified GAT Master Elite TM roofing contractor where only 3% of the nation’s roofing contractors qualify for this designation. This designation is received by having a proven reputation, ongoing professional training and the company is fully licensed and insured. Call 530-272-7777, email info@ byersroof.com or visit http://byersroof.com for more information. Byers’ Leaf Guard and Roofing Systems is located at 11773 Slow Poke Lane in Grass Valley.

WHAT SENIORS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT COMMON UNLICENSED CONTRACTOR SCAMS DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLICITATIONS A solicitor offers to do roofing, painting or paving work at a reduced price. Once payment is made, little or no work is done and the project is abandoned. HIGH PRESSURE SALES An unscrupulous contractor pushes for an immediate decision about work, which makes it impossible for the homeowner to get competitive bids, check licenses or review references. SCARE TACTICS A deceitful contractor offers to perform a free inspection, then claims that faulty wiring, bad plumbing, or a leaky roof put the homeowner in peril. The alarmed homeowner agrees to unnecessary and over-priced work.
DEMAND FOR CASH A contractor demands cash payments, sometimes going so far as to drive the victim to the bank to withdraw funds. With money in hand, the unscrupulous operator takes the money and runs. ILLEGALLY LARGE DOWN PAYMENTS A dishonest contractor takes more for a down payment than is allowed by law, claiming to need instant cash for supplies and to pay workers. By law, a down payment cannot exceed 10 percent of the project price or $1,000, whichever is less. VERBAL AGREEMENTS A contractor states that a written contract is unnecessary--promising to deliver on the verbal agreement. The shady operator takes advantage of the situation to perform shoddy work--or none at all.

Use an indoor eye
for designing outdoor spaces
BY EMILY POTTER Sierra Timberline
To live outside
i n the sunshine is as natural a desire as seeking shelter during a winter storm. To effectively enjoy that environment at home requires that the outdoor rooms and spaces we create be every bit as alluring, inviting, and comfortable as our indoor areas. For a porch, patio, or backyard deck to be truly livable, it must meet the same standards as those we set for our indoor rooms. It must meet our physical, visual, emotional, and even our spiritual needs. In most situations, what makes you comfortable inside will make you at ease outside. This includes:
High quality furniture Furnish your outdoor room much as you would an indoor one. Invest in solid, durable low-maintenance tables, chairs, sofas, and chaises. Choose ample-sized seating pieces with thick cushions and sturdy weather-resistant wood or metal frames. Besides being uncomfortable, flimsy furniture won’t look good and won’t make you feel good about spending time outside. Great looking outdoor area rugs enhance the living space while providing a sound softened surface.
High quality appliances. An ice chest and hibachi are great for tailgate picnics, but if you plan
on serious outdoor entertaining, invest in a good portable or builtin gas or charcoal grill – one that is big enough to fix a meal for at least six to eight guests. Create a cooking center with some cabinet and countertop space so that you can store equipment and have a generous prep surface. An underthe-counter refrigerator will save you from making repeated trips into the house.
Focal points Provide visual interest – an outdoor firepit can double as an intimate gathering spot as well providing a cozy heat source during the chilly months. Fountains, statuary, real or outdoor silk trees and plants all entertain the eye, and attract attention. Hidden stereo speakers can play gentle bird sounds or lively music – setting the feeling for relaxation or for party time.
A reassuring sense of enclosure A railing around a deck, a strategically positioned privacy fence, vine-covered trellis, or retractable awning can create the equivalent of interior walls and ceilings. They define boundaries for the outdoor room and provide a comforting sense of security. Yet their seethrough character allows them to connect with the landscape. For even more structure consider a gazebo, pavilion, or pergola. In effect,
these are detached room additions that provide shelter from both the sun and rain.
Good lighting Both decorative and functional. Why should an outdoor room be available to enjoy only in the daylight? A combination of medium and low-intensity lighting can turn a yard, garden area, or patio into a magical space where shape, shadows, and color are as attractive at night as during the day. Illuminate the perimeters of a deck or garden path. Use uplighting fixtures to highlight trees and shrubs. Use downlighting mounted up high to provide ground level lighting. Outdoor rated floor and table lamps will add to the interior atmosphere of the space. Many are available with fabric shades specifically designed for weather resistance. Candles and oil lamps also add to the ambiance.
Climate control Fences and hedges can deflect strong winds and protect you from chills. A ceiling fan breeze can make a covered porch or gazebo more comfortable in the summer. A retractable awning can provide shade during the hottest part of
the day while allowing for relaxed stargazing at night. An outdoor fireplace, firepit, or radiant heater can prolong an outdoor space’s usefulness as the weather cools down. Furnishing, decorating, lighting, and landscaping outdoor rooms allow you to expand your living environment. With a little creativity, your home can be more than your house. Done well, an outdoor room can be your refuge, a retreat for meditation; it can be your open-air café ready for fun-filled entertaining; or it can be your outdoor living room, furnished as simply or lavishly as you wish; or all of the above. Sierra Timberline is Nevada County’s oldest, largest, most professional and reliable retailer of hearth, spa, awning and outdoor furnishing products. Since 1978, our staff has enjoyed unsurpassed customer satisfaction by selecting the finest in reputable products and providing friendly, professional service at saving that only a large volume of business can offer. In addition to our retail products, Sierra Timberline has proudly offered in-house installation and service for all of the products we sell.
