TO THE UNION’S 28TH ANNUAL SPRING HOME & GARDEN SHOW We hope to see you this weekend at the Nevada County Fairgrounds for the one and only Home and Garden Show in Western Nevada County. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 28, you will find the latest-and-greatest in home improvement and landscape; literally thousands of inspirational ideas to improve your home, garden, and lifestyle. This year’s show features more than 175 vendors of which 60 are new to our show this year. Whether you are looking for a new whole house fan, window coverings, solar systems, or landscaping ideas, you’ll be in the right place at The Union’s Home and Garden Show this weekend. Please use this event guide to plan your trip(s) out this weekend. Certain activities are day and time specific, and they are all listed in the schedule on page 4. This year we have some exciting additions. For the first time, the Banner Mountain Artisans are having a show and sale within the Home and Garden Show inside the Ponderosa Hall (formerly known as the Senior Center). The Banner Mountain Artisans, until now, have had only one show each year, which is the first weekend in November. We are very pleased to have them join us this year and hopefully the first of many to come. We have a fun lineup of presenters in our Demo/Presentation wing of the Northern Mines Building. Outside we have Mud and Pearls bringing their fun demonstrations suited to women wanting to do it themselves. Schedules for both are in this event guide. This year all of our food vendors are local, offering a wide variety of delicious food. Select from barbecue, pizza, pasties, wraps, coffee drinks, ice cream and confections, salads, fresh squeezed lemonade and more. Music in the Mountains is providing the wine and beer, located this year across from their Wine Pavilion, at the Northern Mines Building. You’ll notice why they aren’t in their normal location; the wooden deck is being replaced with a much larger concrete patio.

Both days offer live musical entertainment from noon to 3 p.m. on the Pine Tree Stage (near Treat Street). Saturday enjoy the group “Then Again” as they sing favorites from the 60’s and 70’s, and Sunday enjoy “Dream and the Dreamer,” as they play music from the past and present. Both groups are excellent and provide a fun place to take a break and relax for awhile. We’ve got great activities for the kids with an opportunity to build a birdhouse, sponsored by Hills Flat Lumber, near the Northern Mines Building. They can paint a flower pot and plant a flower in it over near Ponderosa Hall on the lawn, sponsored by B & C True Value Home and Garden Center. For a minimal charge, there is face painting and a bounce house. We have a couple of extra attractions for Sunday of the show. Riebes Auto Parts has generously arranged for us to exhibit the Dale Earnhardt race car, owned by Bart Riebe, all day long. In addition, the Bill McAnally Racing Team will provide a racecar hauler plus a couple of race cars. From 1 to 3 p.m. you can come meet Bill McAnally and two of his drivers. Look on page 8 for more details on this very exciting opportunity. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, you can bring your antiques and have them appraised by “The Antiques Answer Man” Gary Cox. He will be in the Northern Mines Building and can appraise items for $10 each, or three for $25. He’s an expert and we are very fortunate to have him. Whether you’re coming out to make buying decisions, learn things, be entertained, or just have fun with the family, you’ll find it all at this weekend’s Home and Garden Show. As always, admission is FREE. (Fairgrounds parking charge is $5 per car, so load ‘em up!) We hope you will come out and take advantage of all the show has to offer, at this very fun and exciting community event.

NASCAR drivers, see a piece of NASCAR history If you are a NASCAR fan, you won’t want to miss the special presentation on Sunday at the Home & Garden Show. Riebes Auto Parts has arranged a special exhibition of the Dale Earnhardt race car (No. 3) that Bart Riebe recently acquired. It’s a piece of NASCAR history, and you can see in person Sunday. In addition to the Earnhardt car, the Bill McAnally Racing Team will share their huge race car hauler, and two race cars. Bill McAnally, a former NASCAR driver himself, opted to turn over the driving duties to someone else in 1998. Now as NASCAR owner with five K&N championships and two NASCAR late model championships, McAnally was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame, the youngest, living inductee to receive the honor. Many drivers have worked and wheeled a BMR entry including Clint Bowyer, Michael Waltrip, Kerry Earnhardt, Sara Fisher, Brendan Gaughan, Peyton Sellers, and more. The Bill McAnally Racing team look to capture their sixth championship this season in NASCAR K&N West series, which will visit All American Speedway in Roseville Oct. 12, featuring two-time Daytona Champion, Michael Waltrip. Enter to win a“Ride Along”with one of the NASCAR drivers (three laps before the race) at the October 12 event in Roseville at the NASCAR exhibit. McAnally, plus two of his drivers, Sergio Pena and Hayden Pedersen will be with the cars between 1 to 3 p.m. to meet and greet, sign autographs, and pose for photos. It’s an opportunity any NASCAR fan won’t want to miss. Special thanks to Riebes Auto Parts, Bart Riebe and Jay Cooper for helping us arrange this once-in-a-lifetime event.

All of your favorites from the '50s, '60s, and '70s. The trio is comprised of James May on guitar and vocals, Kathy Chastain on vocals and hand percussion, and Steve Nicholson on bass and vocals. Then Again was formed when Chastain and May started singing together in 2005. Nicholson joined the band in 2009 to fill out the sound with his deft bass playing, and has enabled their audiences to experience the thrills and chills of three-part vocal harmony. In addition to Then Again, May also performs as a solo artist—he has written and produced one solo album, and is working on another. Chastain has been involved with a variety of singing groups, and was one of the founders of the Sierra Master Chorale (with which she continues to perform). Nicholson sings with the Sierra Master Chorale as well and continues to be in demand as a go-to bassist for the Nevada County musical theatre community. He is in the Sacramento Music Hall of Fame as a member of Natalie Cortez and the Ultra Violets. Fun is Then Again’s raison d’etre. By encouraging their audience to not resist the temptation to sing along, and by their infectious love of these great songs, a splendid time is had by band and audience alike.
HAEMMIG Construction, Inc.
Noon-3 p.m. Sunday, at the Pine Tree Stage Dream and the Dreamer is a duo from the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. Two guys that sing and play four plus instruments; yes, more than four instruments at the same time. When you see them, they’ll look like a full band, they’ll sound like a full band, but there are just two guys. Doug Caldwell not only sings, he plays bass with his feet, and keeps his hands busy with either keyboards or guitar and he plays harmonica too. Ray Laflin is also a singer, plays drums with his feet and keeps his hands busy playing rhythm and lead guitars. Dream and the Dreamer puts on quite a show, playing not only the most popular hits from yesterday and today, but the most epic of all songs like Don McLean’s “American Pie,“ The Rolling Stone’s“Can’t Always Get What you Want”and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” They put on a great show and really get the crowd moving with songs from newer artists such as Plain White T’s, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Train and more. Getting people out of their seats and singing ngers onalong with them is their specialty. The Ave Marvel’s “It’s always a good time when you play music that people love,” says Dream and the Dreamer.

Plan It Solar and Sierra Solar
SOLAR PANELS HAVE BECOME MORE EFFICIENT AND AFFORDABLE Since the birth of Plan It Solar in Penn Valley back in 1999, the solar energy industry has undergone several changes. One difference is the fact that solar panels have significantly dropped in price, due to popular demand. The other is that panels are smaller and much more efficient. During that time, the majority of customers came to Plan It Solar from the outskirts of town to implement off-grid solar electric on their homes since utility providers were unavailable in remote areas, and generators were still using fossil fuel; not as economical as solar. The word quickly spread, especially in Penn Valley, and residential homes gradually donned rooftop panels, boasting a reduction on their utility bill, in other words being grid-tied. In 2011, Plan It Solar merged with Sierra Solar offering a huge selection of products to satisfy both the off-grid and on-grid enthusiast to greatly increase sustainability as well as enjoy a substantial utility savings. Additionally, their retail energy store currently offers solar well pumps, wind and water energy, propane refrigerators, on demand water heaters, composting toilets, and much more. Both Plan It and Sierra Solar have monthly educational workshops to help you understand why so many more people are going with solar energy, and how easy it is to get started yourself, whether leasing or using financing to get your project done, with little or no cost to you. When you call them, you’ll speak with knowledgeable designers who will gladly help answer all of your energy concerns and estimate your potential energy savings. They’d like to show you how you can stop sending your energy dollars to your utility, and invest in your own energy independence. Plan It Solar and Sierra Solar are located in the Alternative Building Center, 563 Idaho Maryland Road in Grass Valley. Call them at 530-273-0303, or visit their website at www.planitsolar.com and www.sierrasolar.com. This weekend find them outside on the Marigold Path at the fairgrounds.

Interior Decorating
Over the years many people have asked owner Elisa Hawkins why she became a painting contractor. “I can remember at a very young age instead of watching Saturday morning cartoons, I was on job sites with my family swinging a hammer. Being that I was the daughter of a general contractor, this was very familiar to me. As a young adult I always held jobs that were related to construction in one way or another,” Hawkins said. When she first started her business Affordable Painting, she often wondered how customers were going to react to a female painting contractor. Being confident in her painting skills, she was definitely up for the challenge. “What I quickly learned is that it did not matter if you were male or female. All that my customers were looking for was a professional, quality paint job,”she said. She was determined to set out and create a unique business with quality work and most importantly, excellent customer service. In 2005 Affordable Painting had become an all girls painting crew. Elisa felt that some were skeptical, but with the attention to detail and knowledge of her crew they quickly proved themselves worthy in the painting world. With the use of scissor lifts, 40 foot ladders and harnesses off roof tops, their customers learned there was no job too big or small for this painting crew. One of the most rewarding parts of her business here in Nevada County is being able to watch the transformation her clients’ homes go through as a result of their services. “Just like my family. Some of these homes have been here since the early 1900s. Many of these homes I hold dear to my heart, with fond memories,”Hawkins said. Affordable Painting offers many painting services to their customers, from exteriors to interiors, residential and commercial, restoration of decks, barns, fences, cabinets, furniture, sidewalks, and much more. “What I’ve learned over the years is no matter how hard you work, or how many hours you put in, my company would not be where it is today, without my incredibly talented girls and most importantly the support and loyalty from all of our customers. All of us girls at Affordable Painting thank you,”she said.

They started out making chairs and tables but quickly expanded into bedroom and office furniture. Later they added cabinets and other built-ins to their product line. Word spread quickly and they have done well even through challenging economic times. They also offer the Simply Amish furniture line along with their own. Made in America, the Simply Amish line has a lifetime warranty as well. In 2012 the company moved to Oroville because of family and church needs. TIMBERTECH INTRODUCES EARTHWOOD EVOLUTIONS TERRAIN TimberTech, a leading manufacturer of alternative decking materials, adds even more choices to its already diverse portfolio of color options by expanding its best-selling Earthwood Evolutions product line to include the Terrain Collection. Joining the Tropical and Natural Collections, this new color palette features two long-lasting colors– Brown Oak and Silver Maple – that emulate the earthy tones found in nature. “In its second year, Earthwood Evolutions continues to exceed expectations for aesthetics and scratch, stain and fade resistance,”said Toby Bostwick, director of product management for TimberTech.“From the Terrain Collection, customers can expect the same high performance qualities, backed by the same 25-year fade and stain warranty as our other Evolutions planks.” Earthwood Evolutions is the industry’s only fully-capped plank that features TimberTech’s proprietary HydroLock technology, creating unparalleled aesthetics, rugged durability, and superior moisture resistance. It features a Flat Grain surface pattern that does not trap dirt and has variegated color designed to achieve a true hardwood appearance. Planks come in either a grooved profile, which works with TimberTech’s CONCEALoc hidden fastening system, or a solid profile, which can be face-screwed using TimberTech’s TOPLoc screws. Earthwood Evolutions Terrain Collection is available in 12-foot, 16-foot and 20-foot lengths, along with matching fascia. Contractors and homeowners will be able to purchase the new Earthwood Evolutions Terrain Collection from TimberTech dealers in Spring 2013. About TimberTech: TimberTech is one of the world’s top producers of high-performance decking, railing, fencing and lighting solutions. With a passion for outdoor living and a global reputation for quality and innovation, TimberTech delivers a wide range of low-maintenance, wood-alternative products in an unmatched selection of colors and styles – all available through a network of more than 8,500 contractors and dealers worldwide. For more information, visit TimberTech.com or view product installation videos on the TimberTech YouTube channel.
