9 Welcome W
elcome to a Classic Country Weekend presented by The Center for the Arts, a nonprofit membership organization located in downtown Grass Valley. We are thrilled to present two icons of Country and Americana music Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, in one weekend at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. For three years, we’ve worked on bringing Willie Nelson to Grass Valley. We knew he would be a great fit for our community and we were not wrong; the concert sold out in five weeks! We limited the capacity to 2,800 so all patrons will have a great concert experience. With tickets selling so quickly for Willie, we decided to add another show to satisfy those who didn’t get tickets. We are so fortunate that Merle Haggard, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Noel Haggard are available for the next night; and we also have the opportunity to showcase an amazing array of regional musicians in the pre-show showcase.

In the last year, The Center’s programming, collaborative efforts and impact in the community has increased to a level many say is unprecedented for a community of our size. We are proud of our accomplishments and could not have taken the risks to expand our programs without the support from membership, donations, business sponsors, volunteers, and a professional staff. As we build on the success of the last several years and strive for excellence and professionalism in all services we deliver, our need for support only grows. Only 60 percent of The Center’s revenue comes from ticket sales and we rely on the support of members and business supporters for the remaining revenue. When you support The Center for the Arts, you make an investment in our community. It’s an investment in the economy of our community as we bring in visitors who spend their dollars at our local hotels, shops, restaurants, and gas stations. It’s an investment in keeping entertainment dollars local. It’s an investment in encouraging creative thinking through writing, poetry, theater, and visiting artist workshops. It’s an investment in collaboration. It’s an investment in your children and the children of your neighbors to ensure they have viable and vibrant arts education programs and creative activities. It’s an investment in the quality of life in our community through high-quality live programming. Thank you for your support of the arts in Nevada County. Enjoy the show!

uality of life here has always been closely tied to the quality of our environment. It is easy to appreciate our stunning landscapes of ancient oak woodlands, working ranches and granite-walled river canyons, but their importance and value go well beyond the visual beauty we readily enjoy. For many of us, saving the places that enrich our lives is reason enough to support conservation, but much more is at stake. Each of these landscapes plays a critical role in maintaining the health of our water, air, economy and our community.

The mission of Bear Yuba Land Trust is to save land, build trails and to get people outdoors to encounter nature. We work with willing landowners on a 100 percent voluntary basis. We protect open space for wildlife, clean water and habitat protection, and view corridors. We work to keep land in agriculture; an important legacy of our community. We work to keep our timber preserves sustainable and productive while protecting old growth trees. We also create parks and trails for public enjoyment of nature and outdoor recreation. We can only be as healthy as the lands we inhabit, and conservation works best when the whole community is involved and everyone is a stakeholder. By working together, individuals, community leaders, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, like Bear Yuba Land Trust, can build a healthy and thriving community, now and for the future. Thank you for supporting our largest fundraiser for the year. If you’d like to help further, please become a member, volunteer, remember us in your will, or donate your property and save your land. Finally, please join me in thanking The Center for the Arts, sponsors, donors and all the hard-working volunteers who made this spectacular event possible.

Fans around the world know that the adventurous Nelson can sing just about anything and with just about anyone he pleases. As he sees it,“The more songs you know, the more musicians you listen to, the more writers you hear, the better equipped you are to decide where you want to go next. That’s why I want to listen to everyone and everything and then decide which way I want to go. Then, of course, I might change my mind and go in an entirely different direction. But at least I have all these options.” As a Nashville artist in the ‘60s, Nelson himself penned more than a few tunes that have arguably become American
classics themselves, including“Crazy,” “Night Life”and the sublime“Funny How Time Slips Away.”But that was just the prologue for the iconoclastic singer-songwriter, who would redraw the borders of country music in the ‘70s after moving back to Texas and settling in the musical melting pot of Austin. Along with fellow traveler Waylon Jennings, Nelson was labeled the outlaw of the genre, but he was more visionary than rebel, especially with the way he attracted rock fans to take a closer look at country. Looking back for a moment, Nelson decides,“Hopefully I’m a better singer. Hopefully, I’m a better guitar playeryou’re either going to get better of worse, you can’t stay in one spot. I like to think that the band and I have progressed a lot and learned a lot from dong these songs. There is truth in the statement that you learn by doing so the more you do ‘em, the better you get.”
Instead,“Stardust”became the most successful album of his career thus far. It reached #1 on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart; racked up more than five million in sales; earned Nelson a Country Male Vocal Performance Grammy; and, most significantly, helped to transform a colorful, middle-aged cult figure into a mainstream star. Encouraging Nelson to record“Stardust”was Bruce Lundvall,
who had the prescience to sign Nelson to Columbia in the ‘70s and, 30 years later, offer him a home at Blue Note. Nelson’s first effort for the label was his acclaimed 2008 collaboration with Wynton Marsalis, “Two Men With the Blues,”a spirited live set that debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard pop chart.
Classic Country Weekend Event Guide 2012
he title of Willie Nelson’s solo debut, “American Classic,”refers as much to the man himself as to the storied Tin Pan Alley repertoire he explores on this elegant new set. While it’s common now for mature pop artists to attempt to put their own stamp on the American Songbook, Nelson practically invented the approach. He set the standard more than 30 years ago with“Stardust,” perhaps this“outlaw”entertainer’s most daring move, an album that many industry pundits thought would get him laughed off the charts and out of the biz.
Biography
Pegi Young and the survivors “‘F
oul Deeds’ seemed like a good album title, because this record definitely has its share of dark themes: divorce, debauchery, disillusionment and despair,” Pegi Young says of her second album and first for Vapor Records. “But I’m not trying to be a bummer. I’m just trying to tell some stories and make music that I can get behind.” “Foul Deeds,” overflows with the same richly evocative songcraft that made her self-titled 2007 debut a revelation. That album exposed the lateblooming artist as both an affecting singer and a songwriter of rare eloquence and insight. Young initially came to the public’s attention through her longstanding role as backup singer with Neil Young, her husband of three decades. “Foul Deeds”makes it clear that Pegi’s iconoclastic creative voice is very much her own. Her uncanny knack for cutting to the heart of thorny emotional issues drives such indelible originals.
Classic Country Weekend Event Guide 2012
Pegi Young began writing songs and playing guitar while still in high school, but eventually
put her creative instincts on hold to attend to the demands of family life. Pegi and Neil’s experiences caring for their son Ben, who was born with cerebral palsy, led her to co-found the non-profit Bridge School. Pegi found herself drawn towards music again after she began touring as backup singer with her husband’s band beginning in 2000. With her kids grown and the confidence gained from performing numerous live shows, she finally had the time and focus to begin recording her own songs. “I’m 57, so I’m never gonna be the next big thing, but I’m cool with that,” she concludes. “If I was younger, I might be more focused on the commerce part of it. But I’m not a 20-yearold trying to make a living, so I don’t have to conform to some record company’s idea of whatever they’re looking for that week. In that way, I guess I can be truly independent and focus on the creative part. I have no idea where it will go from here, but I’m having fun and I feel really, really good about what I’ve done so far.”

f the question were asked who forged the genre that is known today as ‘modern country music’ only a tiny group of immortals could step forward to share the spotlight. One, out of that select handful, would be Merle Haggard. Though he wasn’t in the delivery room on the morning country music was born, it simply seems like he was. You won’t hear anybody refer to him as the father of country music, but many will swear he’s at least its godfather.
Saturday, September 15
In listening to his uncanny craftsmanship, one quickly recognizes that this is a consummate troubadour who expanded and honed his talents in many dimensions simultaneously, developing his name as the quintessential country artist.

Haggard’s life path has never been easy, nor has much of it been pretty. His childhood years were spent in Bakersfield, Calif. and the death of his father, when Merle was just 9 years old, became the catalyst that led to a squandered youth. Along with numerous brushes with the law.
Classic Country Weekend Event Guide 2012

Unfocused, unruly and unsettled, Merle learned early to walk the mean streets. As a teenager he took on every unskilled job that would have him, from oil field roustabout to hay-pitcher to short order cook. He also saw the insides of various penal institutions for crimes ranging from burglary to auto theft and even to escape. Before he had reached the age of 21, he was serving time in the notorious San Quentin Penitentiary, thanks to a bungled attempt at burglarizing a tavern. But the three year stretch within those gray and desolate walls, including a stint in solitary confinement, became the experience that finally changed his perspective and the spark that turned his head around. He abruptly assumed the role of a model prisoner and was paroled in 1960; which was later fully pardoned.
Post-prison life also became the beginning of his untypical musical career. Merle joined a band as rhythm/bass guitarist and began to sing in the clubs and the dives of the infamous“beer can hill”area of Bakersfield.
single was“Singing My Heart Out,” which received some regional airplay on the West Coast, but it was in 1963 that he eventually broke into the top twenty of Billboard’s country charts with his first national hit,“Sing A Sad Song.”
In one brief stretch his life took a major turnaround. He was signed by Tally Records, owned by close friend Lewis Tally, and began cutting singles in a garage behind Tally’s house. His first
Since then the country charts have been his second home. Over the course of his career, several of his songs have been at the top of the charts, including: “(All My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers,”
Singer, songwriter, remarkable musician, bandleader and historian, Haggard may well be the most well-rounded country talent ever to take the stage in front of a microphone or an audience. Over his career, he has been the pulse of an everlonesome fugitive, in desperate flight from the prison walls of mediocrity. His has been the voice of the Okie with an attitude, fueled by a well-stoked fire of unflinching convictions and bone-deep beliefs. In his music he has hung his soul out on the line, baring himself in those songs clawed out of the soil and bonded together with grit and spit. As a result, that music is not only resounded in such typical entertainment channels as radio, records and concert dates, but has also been integrated into the university classroom setting where students examine the sociological implications of his works.
Biography
Ramblin’ jack elliott One of the last true links to the great folk traditions of this country, with over 40 albums under his belt, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is considered one of the country’s legendary foundations of folk music. In the tradition of roving troubadours Jack has carried the seeds and pollens of story and song for decades from one place to another, from one generation to the next. They are timeless songs that outlast whatever current musical fashion strikes today’s fancy. There are no degrees of separation between Jack and the real thing. He is the guy who ran away from his Brooklyn home at 14 to join the rodeo and learned his guitar from
Noel Haggard Noel Haggard was born in Bakersfield, Calif. It’s no wonder that his music is of the raw nature ... pure, simple and easy on the ears. The son of Merle Haggard, Noel’s soul permeates the same taste in music that his father and the country music forefathers of Merle’s childhood days. Not to be denied his roots, he has gained many valuable musical lessons from some of the greatest
a cowboy. In 1950, he met, moved in with, and traveled with Woody Guthrie. In 1954, Jack journeyed south through Appalachia, Nashville and to New Orleans to hear authentic American country music. In 1955 Jack traveled to Europe, bringing his genuine American folk which inspired a new generation of budding British rockers, from Mick Jagger to Eric Clapton. When he returned to America in 1961, he met young folksinger Bob Dylan. Along the way, he learned the blues first-hand from Leadbelly, Miss. country musicians. Somehow Noel has taken a little from each influence to make his own delectable sound. Noel and his band became very popular in the Northern California area, but just couldn’t get any exposure. Noel at the age of 29 decided after being on the road with Merle that it was his turn to strike out on his own in Nashville. Since that time Noel has grown to understand that stardom is not what he was after to begin with. Noel plays for Noel and his fans now, and
Jack Dupree. He has recorded 40 albums and in 1995, Ramblin’ Jack received his first of four Grammy nominations and the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album, for “South Coast.”In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded Jack the National Medal of the Arts, proclaiming,“In giving new life to our most valuable musical traditions, Ramblin’ Jack has himself become an American treasure.” Ramblin’ Jack’s life of travels, performances and recordings is a testament to the America of lore, a giant land of struggle, hard luck and sometimes even good fortune.
that concept of thinking has allowed him to dig deeper into his own style of music. Noel is comfortable with who he is, and that he is the son of a living legend, but most of all he is comfortable with fact that being in the shadows of a man like Merle is a pretty fortunate place to be. His love for his father and family have come together to make Noel the artist that he is today and his new album “Nite Time Man” shows these qualities that he has acquired over the years.
Opener Biographies
Dakota Sid & Travers Clifford with Homer Wills “After 25 years on the road, Dakota Sid could have been a burnout case. Instead as the years passed, his songs took on a lyrical and emotional honesty that grabs an audience in the gut. His best songs reach across boundaries and draw people together.” — Medford Mail Tribune

The collaboration of folk singers Brendan Phillips and Bodhi Busick is the product of a deep, multi-generational musical heritage with strong roots in Nevada City. Phillips has picked up the torch of the socially conscious, directly active, folk music tradition that was, for years, carried by his father, Utah Philips. Busick is a local singer songwriter, activist and folk philosopher with a history of collaborating with the late Phillips.
