You may have noticed food donation trollies in both New Worlds in town. These are part of KiwiHarvest's ’Winter Food' campaign. By donating items from your shop or excess food from your pantry, you will not only be helping locals struggling this winter, but you will also help build a more food resilient community in the long term.

Thanks to so many great campaign partners amongst the community, for every trolley filled it will be matched with one upcycled planter box package that will be allocated come spring. We have a target of 100 planter packages, so every trolley filled has two amazing benefits for the community.

KiwiHarvest are the local food rescue charity in the

region. They rescue excess food from local supermarkets, food producers and cafes and redistribute that food to local charities helping people struggling with food insecurity. In Wanaka they support the amazing work carried out by Food for Love, Community Network / Link Food Bank and Kahu Youth Trust. Kia Ora whanau, Busy last couple of weeks with winter well and truly upon us. An update from last issue, the search warrant mentioned in relation to the burglaries has resulted in the arrest of two young men and charges laid. Great work, if I do say so myself. Continuous reports of people doing burnouts at Eely Point. With newly installed cameras in the area, it’s looking likely we’ll be able to capture their darling wee faces and hold these people to account.

A noticeable decrease in shoplifting which is a great outcome and shows our zero-tolerance stance is having an impact.

A reminder, with the colder weather requires a more cautious approach to early morning and evening travel. Increase your following distances to account for possible road imperfections and other drivers' lack of experience.

A driver was apprehended after he drove into a parked utility on Aubrey Road, similarly, another traffic crash occurred on Cardrona Valley Road where a utility vehicle completed an unconventional manoeuvre and drove through a fence to stop. To top off the trifecta, a two vehicle collision occurred at the bottom of Anderson Road at the roundabout, all parties walked away unscathed but serves as a reminder to be cautious.

A number of youths were arrested, and pepper sprayed as a result of disorderly behaviour at an out-of-control party over the weekend. The party was meant to only be 40 people but that number very quickly grew to infinity and beyond, oops, wrong blog, 100 + attendees. A reminder to parents, regardless of your uber-responsible teenagers, their friends may not be so mature... or they’re actually very mature (old), and that’s a whole other problem.

In a separate incident involving our wee cherubs, a group of young boys went to an address and knocked numerous times over the period of an hour late at night. Understandably so, this caused the occupants to become frustrated and notify Police. They’re cunning and may not always be where you think they are.

A domestic incident occurred at an Air BnB which ended with an arrest after the male party took it upon himself to redecorate the address. He did this of course, without approval and caused tens of thousands worth of damage. Crime doesn’t pay, but he will.

A farewell for us, Senior Constable Greg Nolet is moving on to greener pastures. They’re off to the big city where he hopes to impart his wisdom on the next generation of Police. Greg has contributed a lot to the community throughout his 15 years (I think) Policing in Wanaka and will be sorely missed by the station. Christchurch will be gaining some much sought-after experience and are lucky to have ya, all the best and thank you.

Hawea’s Best Kept Secret

Hawea Playgroup is one of the best kept secrets for parents and bubs in the area.

They welcome all families with children aged 0-5 to come join for a warm space and a hot cuppa this winter. Playgroup is designed to host parents and their young children in a supportive and creative space where you can connect with the wider community. Each day you can count on sandpit fun, messy play, art, crafts, stories, interactive toys for babies to pre-schoolers and even sometimes giant bubbles and even live music! It’s a great excuse to get out

of the house and chat to some other mums and dads and socialise your child. They also host birthday parties if you’re looking for a great a ordable option. Hawea Playgroup is looking for some more community members to join their awesome team of volunteers and they will be holding their annual general meeting on Tuesday June 20th at 7:30 pm at their premises.

Wao Film Festival: Sharing Precious Stories, Live and Now Online

Last month’s Wao Film Festival was such a success that the team from Wao have now launched it online!

The festival, run by Wao Aotearoa, was a celebration of storytelling, connection and the power of both of these to help us to understand what it means to be human on planet earth at this time.

There were over 620 attendees across the four days, and Wao Community Coordinator and operations manager for the festival, Aaron Thulé says the

event went amazingly, and was a huge success for its rst year. The selection of lms has been curated by Wao co-founder and general manager Monique Kelly and the o cial selection has 17 of the most inspiring short lms and documentaries in the world right now. Microplastics Study To Begin In Lake Wanaka

Not a lot is currently known about the presence of microplastics (fragments of plastic less than 5mm) in our freshwater lakes and rivers as most studies in Aotearoa NZ have focused on the marine environment.

“Our aim for this project is to better understand plastic pollution in our local lakes and rivers and bring our community together to drive meaningful change and innovative solutions.” says Jose Cran eld of WAI Wānaka WAI Wānaka is on the lookout for community volunteers to assist this work, particularly those with water testing and/or shing experience. Teeny tiny plastics may equal big problems for our freshwater. Community organisation WAI Wānaka has received funding from The Otago Participatory Science Platform, Curious Minds, Ten Square Games and PlanetPlay to support microplastics research here in Lake Wānaka. This research

will be driven by PhD student Veronica Rotman of the University of Auckland and will include keen members of the community.

The University of Otago’s Marine Research department are supporting this research with their labs for analysis in Dunedin.

East Hawea / Timaru Creek Aerial Bovine TB Control Operation

POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION Contract Wild Animal Control (NZ) Limited wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the East Hawea / Timaru Creek Area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of OSPRI New Zealand to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

CONTROL AREA The East Hawea / Timaru Creek treatment area is located approximately 17 kms to the north-east of Wanaka. The operational area extends up Timaru Creek for approximately 18km. Public access into the operational area is from the Te Araroa Trail and the Lower and Upper Timaru Creek tracks.

COMMENCEMENT DATE The operation will commence with the application(s) of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets beginning on the first day of favourable weather after the 24th of June 2023. Following completion of pre-feeding, the application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence on or after the 1st July 2023.

BAIT DESCRIPTION Pre-feed: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, coated with PRODEER deer repellent, brown in colour.

BAIT DESCRIPTION Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, coated with PRODEER deer repellent, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080).

Both the prefeed and toxic baits contains PRODEER deer repellent. This repellent is intended for use in areas where feral deer may be at risk from eating standard 1080 baits without repellent. The repellent substance will reduce the uptake of baits by deer.

PRECAUTIONS The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area. Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.

Poison warning signs will be erected at all points of public access and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs. Please follow instructions on the signs.
