The new Wanaka Lakes Health Centre on Cardrona Valley Road is nearing completion.

The facility has been developed by the Wanaka and Aspiring Medical Centres and Wanaka Physiotherapy to cater for the growing health needs of our community.

The centre will accommodate both medical centres, Wanaka Physio, plus many other health professionals and services. Contractor Naylor Love say

they are on schedule and everyone will be moving into the new building

by June 20th.

Manager of Wanaka Lakes Health Centre, Richard Beven (pictured above), says there will be an Open Day on Sunday June 12 from 10am until 1pm for members of the public to see inside the facility.

Firstly apologies for the delay in getting to the accidents around Wanaka on the previous Saturday evening. A number of people have queried with me, the response time. This was due to the fact that there was only one unit on duty and we were committed to another job at Makarora. This will always be the nature of rural policing with staff limitations. But a big thanks to the many local people, Fire Brigade and St John’s staff who stopped and controlled the safety of the scene until our patrol could return to town and deal with the matter. It reassures me to see a community committing to policing and public safety themselves, and now for this week.

23.05.2011 Burglary reported of a shed at the rear of the Luggate Hall. The offenders had kicked the door in.

24.05.2011 A 54 year old Hawea male arrested on 13 charges of fraud.

27.05.2011 Police had reported 6 people entering the Lounge Bar on Ardmore Street approximately 01:30 hrs on 27/05/11 while the premises were closed. We have video footage of this entering and the persons and what went on inside. Information regarding this to Constable GLENDINING of the Wanaka police please.

27.05.2011 Two Merino sheep were attacked at a River Bank road property, by dogs, and had to be destroyed. It has been some years since this was a regular problem and we asked all dog owners in the Wanaka area to ensure their dogs were secured, to prevent harm to stock and avoid the dog being destroyed.

28.05.2011 Two local 19 year old males arrested for unlawfully being in an enclosed yard.

28.05.2011 A 42 year old male from Makarora was apprehended for driving with Excess Breath Alcohol, driving away from the Upper Clutha rugby rooms at 12:50 pm on Saturday afternoon, taking his sons home. He blew a high level of 890 mgms. He has lost his licence for 9 months and has been fined $1,500.

29.05.2011 A 76 year old local male was apprehended driving his vintage car in the 80 kmph area on Aubrey Road, at 121 kmph. This led to the suspension of his licence for 28 days. A stylish car and a true gentleman, just a little slower in future please sir.

Who is moving into the new building at 23 Cardrona Valley Road?

Aspiring Medical Centre, Wanaka Medical Centre, Wanaka Physiotherapy, Otago Radiology (xray) , pharmacist, optometrist, chiropractor, podiatrist, audiologist, acupuncturist, counsellor, medical specialists and many others. There is still rental space available - contact the centre manager Richard Beven ph 021427999 2. Are Wanaka and Aspiring medical centres joining up?

No. The medical centres are still separate organizations with their own facilities. They will not share computers or medical notes, however they look forward to working more closely.

3. Is there one big waiting room?

No. The main entrance to Wanaka Lakes Health Centre opens into a large foyer and all the different providers have an entrance off that foyer, with their own reception areas.

4. Will the phone number be the same?

Yes the phone numbers for Wanaka Medical, Aspiring Medical and Wanaka Physio will be the same and you make appointments in the usual way.

5. Which medical centre can visitors go to?

Anyone can make an appointment with the doctor of their choosing by phoning that medical centre. Visitors who arrive at Wanaka Lakes Health Centre looking for a doctor will be directed to the medical centre on duty for that day.

What happens to my medical records if I see a doctor after hours who is not from my usual medical centre?

The medical centres now share after hours call so that doctors from Aspiring Medical and Wanaka Medical are on duty on alternate nights and weekends. Notes from your after hours consultation will be forwarded to your own doctor. Please be aware that the after hours doctor from the other medical centre will not have access to your medical records. If you have complex medical problems, it may be useful to have some of your medical history, or a list of your medications, at home.

7. When is the Wanaka Lakes Health Centre opening?

The building is near completion, with all the providers planning to be operating in the new premises from 20 June. There will be an open day on Sunday 12 June from 10am – 1pm and official opening later in the year.

UPPER CLUTHA TRAMPING CLUB WINTER WALKS HAVE BEGUN....

These are day walks on the 1st Saturday and 3rd Sunday of each month, finishing on 18th September.

Interested people need only to turn up on the day at 8.30am at the Pembroke Car Park (skateboard end).

They must bring lunch, (including Thermos), warm weatherproof clothing, sunglasses, sturdy boots and carpool petrol donation.

All walks are graded easy-medium; usually no longer than 5 hours walking, and within a one hour drive from Wanaka.

The destination is often only decided a few days prior, in order to accommodate weather and conditions.

Winter walks are quite sociable trips and we have been known to stop for a coffee on the way home.

Non members are always welcome.

The next Winter Walk is on Saturday 4th June.

Our next Club Night is on Wednesday 1st June at 7.30 pm at the Fire Station Social Room, behind the Fire Station in Ardmore St. Our full summer programme starts in October.
