WAO SUMMIT

Have you ever cast your mind forward and wondered, “What will 2050 look like?” The Wanaka community is invited to dive into this critical conversation at the Wao Summit 2050 Talk, where we'll explore how to prepare for a future marked by more climate-related disasters, a rapidly growing population and rising challenges around our food, energy and infrastructure resilience and our ability to cope with change.

This talk takes aim at future sustainability challenges and opportunities that are increasingly shaping our communities, society, and economy. The discussion will be led by a globally experienced panel of experts who will unpack these intertwined challenges, offering insights into the tough questions we must face. Set with an imaginative and forward-thinking

tone, the evening promises to be both thoughtprovoking and inspiring. Join the conversation with Emeritus Professor of Sociology Dr. Paul Spoonley, renowned climate scientist Greg Bodeker, and Emma Horgan-Heke, one of the key leaders in the response to Cyclone Gabrielle. Also contributing is Alec Tang from KPMG, who will offer a perspective on how population growth will affect infrastructure, emissions, housing, and education. The evening will be facilitated by Wao General Manager Monique Kelly.

This talk is the official curtain-raiser for Wao Summit, running from October 29 to November 2 in Queenstown and Wanaka. Last year’s event was a sellout, and with tickets priced at just $5, this is a must-attend opportunity to be part of shaping our collective future.

Tickets and details at wao.co.nz for the Wao Summit Korero at Rippon Hall 5.30pm Friday, 29 October.

Consultation on Navigation Safety Bylaw

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has started consultation on a draft Navigation Safety Bylaw 2025. Everyone is invited to review the draft bylaw and make a submission. The draft bylaw has been prepared to manage navigation safety on our navigable waters and foreshore so everyone can safely enjoy water activities.

Get informed:

Consultation material including the draft bylaw, Statement of Proposal, Summary of Information and other supporting information is available at the following places:

• Online at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz

• At Council offices, libraries, and recreation centres

• By emailing letstalk@qldc.govt.nz

We want to hear what you think:

Our waterways are the anchors of this district and ensuring navigation safety is a top priority. We’re looking for you to help us navigate the best course for our waterway’s rules.

QLDC is particularly interested in input regarding the carriage of communication devices, the designation and identification of ski lane locations, and the navigation safety risks associated with recreational jumping from the Albert Town Bridge. Additionally, feedback is sought on vessel identification, regulations for temporary water events, vessel speed interpretation, and access lanes at the Kawarau Dam. Community insights will be invaluable in refining these rules to enhance safety and enjoyment on the water.

All community members, recreational groups, property owners, commercial operators, government authorities, and anyone else who has a connection to our waterways are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas on the draft bylaw. Your feedback will help us adjust our bylaw’s sails to best align with both safety and recreational needs.

The best way to make a submission is online at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz

If you prefer, you can make a submission in the following ways:

• Email: letstalk@qldc.govt.nz with the subject line ‘Navigation Safety Bylaw 2025’

• Post: Navigation Safety Bylaw 2024, Queenstown Lakes District Council, freepost 191078, Private Bag 50072, Queenstown 9348

• Drop it in: to a Council office or library in the Queenstown Lakes District. Submissions close on 31 October 2024.

This notice is in accordance with the Local Government Act 2002.
