SNOW TO THE KIDS 2011

he Snowdrifta crew are bringing snowy smiles and excitement to the pre-schools around Wanaka. Snow to the Kids is in its 4th year and will be visiting six pre-schools in the area over the coming weeks. The team build a small snow hill at each pre-school and the kids are provided with mini skis and snowboards. They then enjoy a valuable time playing in their own and familiar environment, sliding, learning and laughing in the snow. Snow to the Kids is run through sponsorship and community support

which keeps it free for the kids! You can help support the programme by entering our raffle. Tickets are available from Paper Plus and Mitre 10 or keep an eye out for the Snowdrifta Crew and friends selling them around town. There are 25 prizes, all vouchers kindly donated by local businesses. The raffle will be drawn on August 29th. Snowdrifta would like to thank our main sponsors Cardrona Alpine Resort, Mitre 10 and BP Wanaka. Hello all from sunny winter in Wanaka. The weather has been magic but not great for those snow seekers. Hopefully there will be another fall this week for a bit more cover. A local youth has come to Police attention again for poor behaviour and wilful damage. If you are one of those people who behave in this way - it is not normal. Most of the people in this town are good eggs. If you behave like this because you don't like it here, we are happy for you to leave. In fact we will happily point the way! This week they have damaged property including breaking a shop window and damaging parked vehicles; two charges have been laid so far. A local who decided it was a good idea to try and run off when caught breaching the liquor ban, was of course caught and when arrested drugs were found on him. Surely this lad can't be very bright. If you are carrying drugs, why would you want to attract Police attention? This week has been a mixed bag with a broad spectrum of reports such as a female seen acting suspiciously in a burgundy vehicle possibly stealing mail from a letterbox in the Halliday Road area. If it's not yours leave it!! There was another fraud at Treble Cone Ski field, a person was caught using someone else’s ski pass. End result, arrest and trespass from the Southern Lakes Ski fields for a two year period. Speaking of ski fields, two major ski field parties happened this week which seemed to go really well. Good work guys and gals, keep that work up. One lad, unhappy after being ejected from a bar, threw a golf cart which bounced and hit a police car scratching it. Ooops now that’s a bad move...Road signs are being stolen almost every night. If we find them at your address or in your possession, at this rate, we will look at charging for theft or receiving. Use your common sense. There was a battery stolen from a vehicle at Hawea Motors, so if you saw anyone suspicious around there let us know. If you are the careless hunter who lost your rifle last week between Wanaka and Hawea, come and see us we have it. I hope you know it's missing by the way!! Jackets are still being reported stolen from bars. It's not like this is a new thing and it does frustrate me some when you simply don't care enough for your gear that you leave it lying around. Don't get me wrong the thieves are our target but you can't afford to make it easy for them. Same with the slow thinkers who left their snowboards on the roof of their vehicle overnight unlocked. Not clever. Lucky we care more than you do and picked them up for you to collect! Four drink drivers were apprehended. Two males blew almost twice the legal adult breath limit and one drunk driver was clocked at 116km on Brownston Street and was oblivious to the fact that Police were following him. The “back to school” campaign is running and again has caught speeding motorists out. Be warned, the policy is if you are more than 4km over the posted speed limit a ticket will be issued.
