We need volunteer Adult Buddies to enrich a child’s life with encouragement and friendship.

The Buddy Programme has been enriching the lives of children aged between 4 – 12 years in the Otago region for over 20 years.

Aiming to improve children’s lives with friendship, fun and encouragement of positive interests, attitudes, values and behaviour, the Buddy Programme matches each child to a carefully selected trained adult volunteer.

Adult volunteers are recruited to offer a couple of hours each week to befriend and support a child on outings and activities.

The children come from a variety of

This can include being away from extended family members, parental separation or being affected by disability or loss. We currently have a large number of children in Wanaka waiting for a Buddy to support them.

Crime Line

By Constable Peter Reed Well, after consuming a large number of Easter eggs and adjusting my neck after watching the aerial acrobatics over Wanaka, I present the crime line. I must say the Air New Zealand Boeing 777 was particularly impressive.

In the morning of last Wednesday a female pedestrian ran across the road and had a low impact collision with a car.

However the impact was enough to knock her to the floor and fracture her hip.

In the afternoon of last Wednesday the Search and Rescue team were deployed to the Kieran Forks track in Makarora. The rescue team located a tramper who had become disorientated and did not turn up for a jet boat appointment.

Last Thursday an art enthusiast went to an art exhibition at the Albert Town tavern where it is believed a pick pocket stole her purse out of her shoulder bag while she was admiring the art. This gives me cause for concern. Please be conscious of valuables and possessions - it seems we have a thief in our midst.

Also last Thursday officers arrested a female outside Betty's Liquor. She was arrested for drinking alcohol during the liquor ban. Remember the liquor ban is in force between 10.00pm and 8.00am and the liquor ban area covers the CBD's of Wanaka and Hawea and also the lake fronts.

The drink drive bus was in town last week and they became aware of a vehicle reversing away from their checkpoint with its lights off. Officers pursued the driver and he is now being dealt with for dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

In the early hours of Friday morning local officers pursued a blue Peugeot on Ardmore Street in Wanaka. The vehicle sped through intersections at high speed and drove on the wrong side of the road. The driver was eventually detained and is being dealt with for drink driving, failing to stop and dangerous driving.

At 2pm on Saturday we received reports that a vehicle drove into a red Toyota Corolla on Ardmore Street and the driver simply drove off without leaving contact details. If anybody witnessed the incident could they please contact the Wanaka police station.

We have received reports from the Chocolatt Hair salon that persons have damaged their gate that is situated at the rear of the salon. It is likely somebody jumped on the gate causing it to be ripped out of the ground.

Also on Friday night the drink drive team stopped two drivers on State Highway 84. They were processed for being over the legal limit and face court appearances.

On Saturday at around 10.30pm a driver lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a parked ute, and continued to crash through a hedge, a letter box and a hydrant marker. The driver failed to stop and provide details. The driver is being dealt with by police and is likely to face charges.

Caltex Wanaka reported that an offender has smashed the glass front door of the garage late Friday / early Saturday morning.

Enquiries are continuing regarding this, but if anybody has any information regarding this please do not hesitate to contact the Wanaka station.

Freedom camping - have your say The Draft Freedom Camping Bylaw is open for submissions. The bylaw was introduced in 2011 but is being redrafted to bring it in line with the Freedom Camping Act which came into effect at the end of last year.
