t’s just over a week until the region’s largest sporting event – Challenge Wanaka - and the call is out for volunteers to join the Locations Volunteer Crew. Over 400 volunteers have already signed up but we still need another 250 to help out on race day. Being a volunteer is hugely rewarding, lots of fun and essential to the success of Challenge Wanaka. Whether you’ve got a spare hour or a spare day, we’d love to hear from you, however young or old! As part of the volunteer programme, Challenge Wanaka makes a charitable

Police received a complaint that a male and a female were assaulted while walking home. On the 03/01/12 Police executed a search warrant at a local address and a male was arrested and charged with one assault. Enquiries are continuing into the second assault. On the 3/01/2012 a male was arrested for breaching the Liquor Ban. In a separate incident two males were arrested for Disorderly Behaviour. 05/1/12; Police were called to assist the New Zealand Fire Service to evacuate residents of Islington Place and Cascade Drive whose homes where threatened by a blazing scrub fire. All credit to the amazing efforts of all the fire service personal who attended and who undoubtedly saved these homes from destruction. 07/01/12 - Thieves entered an Aubrey Road property and stole an auxiliary motor from a Buccaneer run-about stored at the rear of the dwelling. 08/01/12; Police dealt with three intoxicated males who had an altercation outside a shop late at night. Two of the males were dealt with by way of a Pre Charge warning. 09/01/12 - A window in one of the senior buildings at Mount Aspiring College was smashed with a wine bottle, enquiries are continuing. We continue to receive reports of theft and vandalism and while each incident on its own could be considered minor for the people who have to clean up and fix the property it gets tiring and expensive. We received two reports of letter boxes stolen, the toilets at Scott Beach Lake Hawea were tagged and a real estate sign on Wanaka - Mt Aspiring Road has been knocked over five times in as many days. Lastly a distinctive scarecrow was stolen from a front yard on Tenby Street. Please remember if you see property being stolen or damaged call 111. If you have any information regarding any of these stolen items please call the station on 443 7272 or you can anonymously call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. On the 06/01/12 Police SAR were alerted that four Italian tourists may be over due tramping from the Dart to the Mount Aspiring Hut. Preliminary enquiries with other parties in the area established that they had walked out and a full scale search was avoided. A local Alexandra man was reported by his family as over due from a hunting trip on the evening of Sunday 08/01/12. Police SAR and the Wanaka Land SAR volunteers initiated a night search utilising a helicopter with night vision equipment. The search continued the following day but tragically the hunter was located deceased on a rocky steep face below a series of bluffs in the Rob Roy Valley. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad and difficult time. I hope you all have a safe week.
