FUNDRAISER FOR AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE KIT AT HAWEA FLAT SCHOOL

Among them is the Hāwea Flat School community, with a guaranteed hilarious evening planned to fundraise for an emergency response kit.

The Friends of Hāwea Flat School (FOHFS) have organised a night out with Christchurch-based Bingo Babes Ethel & Bethel on Saturday, May 13.

The event will raise money for an extensive emergency response kit to be stored at Hāwea Flat School, which would be an emergency response centre for the wider Hāwea community in the aftermath of a disaster.

FOHFS spokesperson Marianna Champion said the Hāwea area could become cut off by road in a natural disaster, with the potential for bridges in all directions to be damaged.

The school could be responsible for more than 300 children until their caregivers could reach them.

In many cases, caregivers could be in Wanaka, and the school's enrolment zone also covered Luggate and Queensberry on the other side of the Clutha River. Marianna urged the entire Hāwea community to support the fundraising event. "Our community is amazing at supporting each other in times of need, which will be absolutely vital if we're hit by a natural disaster".

The FOHFS is a link between the community and the school, enabling the community to support the school and vice versa. "We also have a reputation for putting on great events!" she said.

The night out with Ethel & Bethel will take place on May 13 from 6.45 pm at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre. Tickets to the R18 event are $40 and available through tickettailor.com/events/lhcc. The ticket price includes a bingo card, nibbles and supper. The bar will be open and games, auctions and raffles will be held throughout the evening. Tickets are limited.

Hello Wanaka, here is a round up of the blue team's activities, past and upcoming.

Well, the old five finger discount is still a big problem here in town. This is not restricted to the larger shopping facilities, but others seem to be suffering as well. With shoplifters caught over the recent weeks an appearance in front of the judiciary in Queenstown will be happening. We all realise the cost of living is high but shoplifting effects all of us, so Police will continue to take a hard line when dealing with it.

A good Easter weekend with Wheels at Wanaka and the Jet sprints on. This brought many visitors into the town and hopefully some economic assistance to the local economy. Overall, a successful weekend and very well behaved by the attendees.

There were, however, some incidents of disorderly behaviour in town during the evenings. Surprisingly, alcohol was involved, who would have guessed.

And on alcohol, a couple of drink drivers were caught with some infringement notices issued and one person blowing nearly 4 times the legal limit.

We attended a few vehicle crashes in the past couple of weeks, these have happened in both the dry and heavy rain weather. Most could easily be contributed to lack of attention to the road and not driving to the conditions. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured as a result. It should be noted that one of the crashes resulted in the vehicle hitting the bank and rolling over. The saving grace for this driver was that they had the seat belt on. If not, this could have been a very different outcome. Therefore, we enforce the seat belt rule vigorously here in the Wanaka district for safety.

Now a friendly reminder, if you leave your car outside a shop, please take your keys with you at least. Saturday night saw a vehicle left outside a shop on Ardmore Street while occupants went inside. The doors were left open and the keys in the ignition prompting another person to jump in and drive off. The vehicle was recovered by the owner a short time later and only a short distance away but could have been lost. Now you may feel the actions were a bit stupid by the driver, but it is a trend in the area to take for granted you can leave your car unlocked and keys in it and nothing will happen. As Bob Dylan said in the 60’s, times they are a changing. Don’t get caught by complacency.

With the nights closing in we are concerned that there is a lack of cyclists with lights on. Not only is this a legal requirement, but a safety issue with a few near misses with cyclists in the dark being recorded. This includes cycle helmets; I don’t recall a local bylaw being passed that excuses cyclists from adhering to the laws so please wear your helmet and get lights on your bike. Your cell phone light isn’t sufficient either, get some lights that can be fixed and be seen. And finally, the Blast programme for year 9 & 10 students starts up again on the 26/04/23. This is a fitness programme in conjunction with the Police, Kahu Youth and Fit Collective. Running 2 mornings a week, it is aimed at wellbeing, nutrition, resilience, and fun. Past activities have included the Police PCT fitness test, working with FENZ, Mt Iron walks and strength training at local gyms. Shining a light on Luggate Creek

What do you know about the Luggate Creek?

Jenny Moss has been a resident in the Upper Clutha since 1975, when she and her husband rst came to teach in Wanaka. Over the decades she learned and taught local Upper Clutha history to pupils, but it was not until she and her husband moved to Luggate in 2012 that she began to learn the unique history of the Luggate Creek. Jenny has now published a ‘not-for-pro t’ picture book for all ages. The book has been possible with grants from the Upper Clutha Arts Council, the Elsie and Ray Armstrong Charitable Trust and Upper Clutha Transport.

‘Our Creek To Matou Awaawa Otago’s Luggate Creek’ is beautifully illustrated by Kerry Perkins. There is so much to learn about this creek from pre-ice age through to how we ensure a healthy eco system now and into the future.

All book sales support the construction of an information history board near the creek in Taylor Reserve, Luggate.

The little club that could

In 1993, a small group of passionate Nordic Ski enthusiasts established the Wanaka Nordic Ski Club to provide events, training, and fundraising to support Kiwis in the sport of cross country skiing at the recently established Snow Farm.

Fast forward 30 years and New Zealand’s only cross country Ski Club is having to start from scratch and build it’s own facility to support its members, after changes to their lodge lease.

A fundraiser quiz night is being held at Ground Up Brewery on the night of Friday, 14 April at their Gordon Road premises, to raise $10,000 to put a waxing container next to their Locker and Clubhouse containers.
