THE INAUGURAL WAO FILM FESTIVAL

There is nothing quite like watching a really good film. Film's ability to show us the way, to flip the way we look at the world and to inspire action. At a time when our radically shifting world is calling for creative solutions, this may be exactly what we need.

With this power of story in mind, the team at Wao Aotearoa is delighted to announce the inaugural Wao Film Festival. On 18 - 21 May at the Lake Wānaka Centre, a selection of 18 short films and documentaries will celebrate what we think is some of the finest storytelling happening in the world right now.

The festival programme will be spread across four days, and we’ll be joined by guest speakers to keep the conversations rolling. Gather a group of friends, pack a picnic and bring the kids. Come to one film, or come to every session; there are ticketing options available for everyone. Tickets are $15 a session or grab a 3 for $30 pass. Kids are $10 per day. For those who can’t make the sessions or prefer to watch on their own time, the entire festival is available online.

So, what happened over the last two weeks you ask.

We dealt with a large fight on Ardmore Street on Saturday night the 22nd of April around 11.00pm. I would love to hear from anyone who was not involved and can give a sober witness account of the incident.

We dealt with more shoplifting this week. The apprehension team at New World and Mitre10 are doing a great job of finding offences and forwarding excellent footage and information for us to locate the offenders. Shoplifting is theft. Those who steal are thieves. Who would ever think it is reasonable to steal from someone. If you think you have seen someone acting suspicious, bring it to the attention of a store person.

We attended some more crashes in the last two weeks at Bridge number 2 on the Crown Range Road in the wet. These crashes are all too common. We are trying to get the Council to review that section of road and what needs to be done to reduce harm

A large scale operation targeting drugs was actioned. It was highly successful with a large number of illegal substances and firearms. A number of arrests have been made.

Wastebusters’ Repair Revolution Returns

It’s time to dig out those broken treasures that you haven’t been able to part with because Wastebusters and their team of repair superheroes are back!

The Repair Revolution, funded by the QLDC Zero Waste District Programme, is all about bringing volunteers and our communities together to give broken items a new lease of life.

The popularity of the repair concept continues to grow as it gives people a chance to save their treasures from land ll, share repair knowledge, learn new skills and build community connections. Anyone can bring their broken treasures to the events to receive free advice and repairs. These events are not a ‘Stop and Drop’ but a ‘Stay and Learn’, where everyone is encouraged to sit with their repairer and engage in the process.

Can you help Parents and Friends of MAC build an adventure playground for Wānaka, at Mount Aspiring College?

The Parents and Friends of MAC community group has announced plans to build a new adventure playground at Mount Aspiring College in Wānaka. The group aims to raise $80,000 by 2024 to complete the playground, which will be an inclusive space designed to encourage imaginative play and physical activity. The playground will feature a range of climbing structures and surfaces, and will provide a safe and fun environment for the school’s 1,300 students to explore, take risks, and challenge themselves. Parents and Friends of MAC are seeking community support to help fund the

playground. Donations can be made via our Givealittle page www.givealittle.co.nz/ org/mount-aspiring-college or directly to the MAC Board of Trustees Westpac account: 03-1739-0027820-00 with the reference ‘playground’.

Principal Nicola Jacobsen expressed gratitude for the support of the local community and highlighted that the playground will bene t not only the students, but also the whole community by providing a place for families to come together and enjoy the outdoor environment.

Watch Your Mouth: Ageing & Dental Health

Professor Murray Thomson, University of Otago

In this presentation, Prof Murray will share some or his ndings on the pace of ageing and on the oral health of older people, underlining the need for caution in interpreting associations observed in old age between aspects of oral and general health (most notably cognitive decline). Murray will also discuss how we can best ensure good oral health in old age.

Murray Thomson is a 1981 dental graduate of the University of Otago. Early in his career, he worked as a general dental surgeon in NZ and England. Following further study in both countries, he was a public health dentist based in Palmerston North for seven years. His academic research career commenced at the University of Adelaide in 1994, and he moved to the University of Otago School of Dentistry in 1996 where he is now a professor. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2022, he is a proli c and very experienced
