s part of the combined Lions and Rotary clubs of Wanaka Monster Charity Auction and Garage sale at 17 Frederick St (behind McGregor’s Bakery) on the 16th of February at 10am – 4pm there will be 47 plus donated local artists’ works of art sold to raise money for the CT Scanner Suite. These works of art from members of the Wanaka Arts Society, local artists and some from further afield can be viewed prior to auction at 15-19 Cliff Wilson St, Wanaka, from 12 noon until 4pm on Thursday the 14th and Friday the 15th February.

This community cause has inspired the artists to create original art-works for the

auction. Some of the artists have won awards in New Zealand and internationally. Artists contributing to the auction include Maurice Middleditch, Anne Davies, Jan Rasmussen, Susie Ruddenklau, Gilbert Van Reenen, Roger Urlwin, June Harris, Jo Nimmo, Donald Paterson, Jeanette Gillies, Murray Sheppard, Sue Deason-Robertson, Robert Anderson and Freda Ryder.

Come and take a look at the art display and support this cause. All funds raised go towards the CT Scanner Suite fit-out.

Terry The Tarantula and Ruby The Red Back have been causing trouble for tourists. Several holiday-makers have reported finding their belongings covered in unsightly webs while others have received bites. The spiders either do not know or do not care that tourists are the life blood of our town and that giving them a poor impression could have serious consequences for us all.

Visitors to New Zealand are largely unfamiliar with our spiders.

Around 1100 species have been discovered here and 95% of them are found nowhere else on earth. While this is an interesting fact it’s probably not our best selling point as a holiday destination.

This week has been busy with car crashes and thefts from cars.

On Saturday we attended a serious motor vehicle crash near the Gates of Haast. A vehicle containing four French tourists left the road, resulting in the driver breaking her arm. They were driving over a newly sealed stretch of road and were fortunate they didn't end up with a far more serious collision, according to staff.

Later on Saturday, we attended another vehicle crash in the Cardrona Valley when a local male lost control of his car and rolled. Fortunately he and his occupants were uninjured. This was in a road works area. It seems that both these accidents were in areas of loose gravel and road works, which is why we should take note of the signage and slow down.

On Sunday morning at 1.45am, two local males were arrested and dealt with for breaching the local liquor ban.

We also arrested a male who stole two cans of beer from a local store. This sort of offending costs us all - and more shops are taking measures to catch thieves.

On Saturday night/Sunday morning, there was a series of vehicles broken into in the Wanaka township, To date we are aware of 10 vehicles with various forms of forced entry and items stolen. Cash, fuel, radar detectors and golf clubs were targeted. Often the key with vehicle thefts, is the temptation of what is visible to the criminals.

This level of theft is unusual in Wanaka and appears to be more than a random act. Please be vigilant when parking your car and don’t leave valuables inside. Park in areas with good lighting if possible. If you hear or notice suspicious activity around motor vehicles, please call 111 ASAP and then we have our best chance of catching the offender/s.

This week has seen schools back in action. As drivers, this is a dangerous time, as new and excited pupils are unpredictable.

Slow down and expect them to run out, or pop out, at random. Roads such as Anderson Road, Aubrey Road, Kings Drive and around the schools, are the main areas to be extra careful. We often find the parents of school children are the ones we catch speeding especially when they are in a hurry to drop children off at school or get to work. The Wanaka Police are focused on making the school areas as safe as possible and are likely to be in the area.

We have 4 local auctioneers calling the auctions and eftpos available for your purchases. If you need the goods transported to your home we can do it for a $15 per item fee. All proceeds going to the CT Scanner Suite.
