Kahu Youth is embarking on its most ambitious project yet, a new youth centre, located within the Paetara Aspiring Central (formerly the old Mitre10 building), opening late 2023.

Kahu Youth’s vision is to empower ALL youth in the Upper Clutha to live their best lives. They support youth and their diverse needs by providing a range of positive youth development programmes including; mentoring, drop-in sessions, after school clubs, holiday programmes and events. The new youth centre will provide youth with a safe space where they can come for fun and hangouts with friends as well as support from Youth Workers. The interior fit-out will consist of different spaces for youth to enjoy as well as offices, kitchen and

bathrooms. Pacific Environments have been engaged to design the internal fit-out and have placed youth consultation at the heart of the design process. To make this youth centre a reality, Kahu Youth is actively seeking the support of our community as they fundraise to fund fit-out costs. They have made a great start, with the generous backing of GJ Gardner Homes Wānaka, who contributed $7,000 through a recent building supply sale. There are numerous ways for the community to lend a hand and get involved in this inspiring project:

Phone and internet scammers continue to prey on people, and reports continue to come to Police of sums of money being lost to these wretches. Once the money has left your account it is basically gone, and there is very little chance of identifying and prosecuting the offender. So, Police would like to remind readers to be sensible about discussing any personal or security information with any establishment, unless you have made the contact with the establishment yourself.

People continue to put other road users at risk by disregarding the rules relating to driving. Police will not be lenient on any driver offending in relation to Restraints, Intoxication, Distractions or Speed. A multitude of infringement notices have been issued over the last couple of weeks to people who have been caught offending. Infringement notices and tickets impose not only a fine, but also impose demerit points against a person’s licence. Once you reach 100 demerit points, your licence is suspended for a period.

Shoplifters still prey on Wanaka businesses. Two recidivist offenders were apprehended after store security personnel reported their behaviour in a store to Police. They were located in a vehicle in the Cardrona Valley, and Police interviewed them in relation to 17 offences of shoplifting over the last month, and it became very clear that the offenders just didn’t think they would get caught. They are going to court for their offending, and in addition to fines and reparation that will be imposed, the consequences of their convictions can have an impact on their future employment. Another recidivist offender was arrested in relation to 8 offences in Wanaka and Blenheim.

Drink driving continues to raise its head. A driver drew attention to himself by stopping his vehicle at roadworks in Luggate and abusing the workers. Police located the man and established that the man had a breath alcohol level of 1145mcg/l. The legal limit is 250! That man will be appearing in court for his

This causes significant issues for accommodation providers, as it makes the room unrentable for a couple of days while the room undergoes a deep clean and deodorising. The costs are also chargeable to the guest. It is illegal to smoke indoors in any place other than a home, in NZ. The male was argumentative. He was transported to alternative accommodation by Police. Stay safe and have a great week.

Life Education Trust Addressing High Levels of Childhood Anxiety

Life Education Trust is proud to be bringing ‘Nurturing Healthy Minds: Supporting Children with Anxiety’ to Wānaka Primary School on 9 August. St John and Donors Have Top Impact

A group of avid Mt Iron walking fans have clubbed together with St John and Craig Read Building to put an AED (de brillator) at the top of Mt Iron, with the blessing of DOC and QLDC.

“We gured this was the most likely place for it, as in an emergency, it is really only accessible by helicopter... it will take ground crews too long to get up there” said Dell Taylor, Chairperson of Wanaka St John. The group of walkers coordinated by Rachel Farrant, Hailey Hall and families got together the funds for the AED.

Dan Marshall, who works for Craig Read, built the nice little cover to protect it from the elements. Thanks very much to all the families who donated, Craig Read and Dan Marshall. To mark the event, and help the community, St John will run three FREE 1 and a half hour ‘3 Steps for Life’ training programmes on what to do in an emergency, AEDs and CPR. Along with energy and a passion for improving the environment, you will bring knowledge and experience in the following areas:

• Proven experience serving on a board or in a leadership role, preferably within the environmental sector.

• A good grasp of governance best practices in not-for-profit.

• Sound strategic thinking and decision-making skills with the drive to translate vision into actionable plans.

• A strong community focus and an understanding of environmental issues.

• A strong and diverse network.

Commitment

Ideally you are based in the Upper Clutha and able to commit to serving as Chair for an initial term of 3 years with a further term of 3 years being possible.

• The board currently meets every 8 weeks for 3 hours.

• The Chair currently has a weekly meeting with the leadership team, with additional email contact, as required.

The role of Chair is not currently remunerated.
