Te Kāhui o Matariki is a cluster of stars that rises in mid-winter, marking the start of the Māori New Year. The Matariki celebrations provide an opportunity for whānau and communities to come together to reflect on the year that has been and refresh and rise for the year ahead.

This year’s celebration is a great whānau-friendly event, sure to warm a cold winter’s afternoon! There will be no fireworks at this year’s celebration. This decision was made based upon the kaupapa (principles) of Matariki by the Matariki Advisory Committee as well as community feedback. The event is made possible and brought to life by our incredible volunteers, local youth, and our supportive community.

Cheers to Green Drinks this Plastic Free July

Wastebusters will be making sure to ll your cups with fun, feel-good Plastic Free July tips and tricks when it takes over Wao’s Green Drinks later this month.

July’s bonus Green Drinks will be hosted in the shop at Wastebusters on 19 July, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. People will have the chance to learn about what is being done locally to combat plastic pollution and make their own top swaps such as reusable produce bags, natural deodorant and beeswax wraps.

make small changes with a big di erence. “Come and enjoy some fun and informative conversations, connections, tasty treats and delicious drinks while exploring how we can all make a di erence.”

Veronica Rotman and Jose Cran eld, of WAI Wānaka, will talk about their latest research project and the Wasties crew will be sharing tips and tricks on reducing single-use plastics.

“We’ll also have a cheeky pop quiz, some exclusive after hours shopping, and a container swap to help you match a lid to that container that somehow lost its own along the way, or vice versa.” Chelsea said.

Matariki Beach Clean Up

Join Wao for a Matariki beach clean-up this Friday, 14 July.

As part of Plastic Free July and the Matariki celebrations, Wao is organising a Wanaka lakefront beach clean up for all ages. Meet at the dinosaur park at 10.30am on Friday morning and help us renew our pristine lakefront beach.

We’ll be doing our best to ll up Ernie the Eel with as much rubbish as possible! Bring gloves and a smile. See you there!.

The Glow Show Arrives in Wanaka this Week

The much-loved Glow Show arrives in Wanaka on 14 July at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

This year’s performance of the giant puppet show is the Wonderland Glow Show, a fabulous Kiwi ed version of Alice in Wonderland. The Wonderland Glow Show is a magical experience, a fusion of science and the arts, that is designed to intrigue tamariki around Aotearoa/New Zealand. It’s incredible storytelling shows reading as a true superpower, a power every kid has inside.

The Show’s masterfully crafted characters and intriguing scenery

will transport its audiences into a weird and wonderful world of dancing amingos, an eight-metre caterpillar and giant owers.

The dynamic, highly visual performance art is underpinned by an incredibly catchy, original music score.

But it’s not all rosy... there could be a March Hare on the loose!

The Glow Show educates and entertains, by promoting literacy and celebrating the exquisite art of ultraviolet puppetry. It o ers a truly memorable experience with uplifting messages for tamariki.

Rabbit Control and Baiting Operation

The public are advised that the Department of Conservation intends to apply carrot baits containing the pesticide Pindone via ground application in the following reserves:

• Autaia Scenic Reserve and the adjoining section of the Clutha River Marginal Strip - east of Luggate

• Hawea River Marginal Strip – a section of it near Te Awa Road.

• Cardrona River Marginal Strip – this is part of a bigger treatment area coordinated with LINZ near Black Peak Road, south of SH6 and north of Ballantyne Road.

Multiple applications of bait will take place when periods of fine weather allow, with the first application taking place on or after Monday 17th July 2023. Warning signs will be in place before bait is laid.

This pesticide is poisonous to humans and animals.
