Imagine spending 10 weeks of summer stuck on a cold, windswept, rugged island located 700km south of New Zealand. Albert Town’s Chrissy Wickes – an artist and conservationist – did exactly that!
Chrissy and three others endured howling wind, sleety rain, snow and wild storms on Campbell Island in NZ’s Subantarctic Islands. They were working for DOC, searching for the nests of Southern Royal Albatross (Toroa), the largest of all the world’s albatross species. As an artist, Chrissy was inspired by the unique plants, animals and landscapes of Campbell.
After returning home, she began creating unique pieces of artwork featuring some of the bugs, birds, super-sized megaherbs and landscapes which she’d seen on the island.
Chrissy is now able to share her artwork, stories and images with our community, with the support of local groups Wānaka Backyard Trapping and the Central Otago Lakes Branch of Forest & Bird. She’s giving a talk about her work on Campbell Island, alongside her first solo art exhibition.
Guests can expect a brilliant talk, followed by local wine, nibbles and a chance to view and buy Chrissy’s unique art.
‘Art and the Albatross’ is on Friday, 16 August from 6.00 - 9.00pm in the Sidey Auditorium, Wānaka Community Hub. The talk starts at 7.00pm.

The Wanaka Woolcrafters, formerly the Wanaka Creative Fibre Group, are hosting a gathering of bre groups from the region on Wednesday, 28 August.
They will gather in the main room at the Wanaka Community Hub at 10.30am to share skills, ideas and friendship.
If you are interested in spinning your own yarn, weaving, knitting, crochet or felting come along for a visit and they are happy to help you get started or extend your skills.
If you would like to be more slow fashion and create your own yarn and make your own garment this is a great place to start. They will have spinning wheels to try on and help with knitting.

make some new contacts, bring your project and join them for a chat and a cuppa. Everyone is welcome
There will be a speaker on art spinning, a sales table, ra e, and some displays.
Morning and afternoon tea will be provided, and soup for lunch. Entry costs $5.
