In a newly formed collaboration, Kāhu Youth Trust and investment advice firm, Forsyth Barr are set to illuminate Lake Wānaka Centre with the sparkle of community spirit.

The highly anticipated Winter Wonderland Ball, scheduled for Saturday, 24 August, promises an evening of elegant entertainment and dancing alongside delicious food catered by Raspberry Creek Catering matched with stunning wines including Rippon and Maude.

Marking a significant milestone Kāhu Youth Trust celebrates its 21st year, alongside its relocation to Paetara Aspiring Central. This transition symbolises

a 'coming of age' for the charitable organisation, solidifying its commitment to empowering Upper Clutha youth. Money raised from the event will go towards the refit of the new centre.

Expressing enthusiasm for the partnership with Kāhu Youth Trust, the Forsyth Barr Wānaka team highlight the synergy between their values and the mission of Kāhu Youth Trust. Together, they envision a future where the youth of Upper Clutha thrive, embodying the spirit of community resilience and achievement.

Te Tupua - The Goblin

Interested in art? Love painting and drawing? Don’t think you’re good enough? Just come along, give it a go, no matter what your skill level is.

This a friendly and welcoming group, whose members support each other to improve and learn new skills.

Members work with many different mediums: water colours, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, oils, pencils and colour pencils.

Occasionally one group member will lead the rest of the group with a special technique or medium.

Experience a visit from a ghost as history comes to life! ‘Te Tupua – The Goblin’ tells the tale of a disenfranchised child, a shipwrecked sailor, a slave, a tattooed freak.

A Scottish lad of 10 is driven into slavery aboard His Majesty’s ships, circa 1800. After 15 years at sea, he is cast onto the shoreline of Aotearoa. The fight for survival begins.

‘Te Tupua – The Goblin’ is a solo play written and performed by John G Davies. Te Tupua deals with atonement concerning bicultural New Zealand and the hidden trauma of our shared violent history. Early 19th century in Aotearoa was a dynamic time. The recorded experiences of both Māori and Pākehā are vivid and fraught with danger, yet these stories reveal deep alliances, friendships, marriages, and hard-won loyalties. This play is drawn from those histories and is suitable for ages 10 and up.

‘Te Tupua - The Goblin’ is presented by Arts on Tour which brings these shows to heartland Aotearoa. We pay a fee, and any additional revenue made from ticket sales is kept by the Lake Hawea Community Centre to assist with general running and compliance costs.

The performance is on Thursday, 23 May, 7.00pm at the Lake Hawea Community Centre.

Once a year the group organises an artist’s retreat - this year they enjoyed a successful and productive 3-day trip to Aoraki Mount Cook.

The group meets every Monday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm, all year round, even on public holidays, at the Wanaka Arts Centre, 13 Brownston St.

New members and visitors are always welcome.

Membership $100/year. Visitors $5 per session.

With Exercise Comes Growth - For People With Parkinson’s

Exercise has long been recognised as a cornerstone in maintaining good health, but its bene ts extend even further, especially for individuals with Parkinson’s.

Research has shown that regular exercise can signi cantly alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s. Through enhancing mobility, balance and exibility and reducing the risk of depression and cognitive decline.

In Wanaka we have a weekly exercise class subsidised by Parkinson’s New Zealand and run by an experienced physiotherapist, quali ed in Parkinson’s rehab. The Wanaka Parkinson’s exercise group and their care-partners o er a supportive, fun and motivating environment

where there is a sense of camaraderie and feeling of belonging, with others who understand their experiences.

In celebrating Parkinson’s New Zealand’s 40th Anniversary, we are extremely lucky to be welcoming to Wanaka in August, world renowned researcher Prof Bas Bloem and founder of the Davis Phinney Foundation, Connie Carpenter-Phinney. They will be joined by our own Dr Barry Snow. An informative and interactive ‘Living Positively with Parkinson’s’ one day seminar. Clients of Parkinson’s New Zealand will receive information soon on how to purchase tickets to this event.
