After a six-year hiatus, Aspiring Conversations returns to our beautiful backyard from 4 to 7 April, hosting 14 events across three venues to stimulate the mind and feed the soul. The full programme will be available at www.aspiringconversations.co.nz from 7.00pm on Monday, 29 January, with ticket sales starting at 8.30am on Friday, 2 February. The first session announced, 'Tower of Song', features Kiwi songwriters Julia Deans, Adam McGrath, and Ebony Lamb, hosted by music reviewer, writer and broadcaster Grant Smithies. Attendees can expect not only performances, but also a profound exploration of the musicians' early experiences, delving into the magic, inspiration, and challenges of songwriting. As the festival unfolds, a diverse lineup of over forty speakers and artists will explore a range of topics,

from culture and history, to adventure, food, politics, personal challenges, and climate change. This year's thematic exploration extends into artificial intelligence, wellbeing, writing and the timeless allure of Greek mythology. The programme includes storytelling, live theatre, music, spoken word, school workshops, and engaging kōrero, with surprise installations from the local community to be revealed at the event. In these challenging times, nurturing genuine dialogue is crucial, and Aspiring Conversations provides an opportunity to come together, listen, talk, laugh, be challenged, and learn while reconnecting within our growing community. Grow Wānaka Community Garden, Compost Centre and Education Hub The Grow Wānaka garden is heading into the most abundant time of the year and we have some fun upcoming workshops and events to celebrate! On 27 January, 9.00 - 10.30am Erin Alison from Harvest Homegrown will be joining us for an educational workshop on no-dig gardening focused on planting for autumn harvest. A koha workshop open to all. Bring gloves if you’d like to get hands on. On 24 February, 11.00am - 12.30pm we will be hosting a ‘Harvest to Table Lunch’. We’ll be heading into the garden to collect fresh ingredients for a collaborative cook up and feast. This is a free event open to all. BYO utencils and chair. Contributions to enhance the table are welcome.

Would you like to learn how to play ukulele and help with your mental wellbeing? Wanaka Mental Health Peer Support group, with funding from from Te Hau Toka - Connecting Communities Fund, are currently running free classes every week. We hope that as well as learning a new skill, you’ll enjoy the social class and meet new people. The classes are run by a professional teacher, with peer support from the Wanaka Mental Health Peer Support Group. These wellbeing aspects of classes are based on Te Whare Tapa Whā which at its core have four aspects to good wellbeing - taha wairua/spiritual wellbeing, taha hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing, taha tinana/physical wellbeing and taha whānau/family and social wellbeing. It also encompasses the Five Ways to wellbeing concept. Classes are currently being held at the Community Hub, 11.00am – 12.00pm on Thursdays. The Peer Support group also runs social coffee and chats, sessions with guest speakers and peer support groups.

Second Annual Wānaka Country Club Meet

On Saturday, 27 January Aspiring Athletes Club (AAC) will host their 2nd annual Country Club Meet at the athletic grounds at Three Parks Rec Centre. AAC are expecting over 100 athletes from Cromwell, Alexandra and Queenstown, as well as those traveling from Dunedin clubs such as Caversham, Hill City and Taieri. A record number of over 40 of their own AAC club members have also already registered. Athletes, ranging in ages from Grade 6 to Grade 14, will compete in tracks events such as 60m, 100m, 200m and 400m along with field events high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and for the younger throwers, vortex. The day will culminate in the exciting spectator event - 4 x 100m relays. Registrations are open to any athlete currently registered with a Club and are open until 5.00pm on Wednesday, 24 January. Happy New Year from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade! We hope you had a great Christmas. December is always a busy month for us, with most of our calls coming over the last two weeks of December. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers who were on call this Christmas. As expected we dealt with a lot of vehicle accidents, some were quite serious. Take care on the roads for the

next few weeks; town is still busy. Fire Risk for the area is still high, so please take note of the risk on the boards around town, and if you’re doing anything that might create a spark or heat take extra precautions. In these conditions wildfire will spread like… well… wildfire! Enjoy the rest of the holidays!
