Wanaka Preschool will be hosting its 11th Art Auction at the Venue on Friday 8 August with viewing, drinks and canapés from 6pm and the auction commencing at 7.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased from the Preschool, Melanie Craig Design or at the door for $25. Limited tables of up to 10 are for sale and can be booked by calling the Preschool on 443 7090.

Over 120 pieces of art will be for sale including paintings, photography, glass, jewellery, ceramics and sculpture from Central Otago and national artists and featuring work by guest artist Wanaka’s own Andi Regan who specialises in work with cable ties.

You can visit Wanaka Art Auction on facebook for further information and additional photos. This is always a fun event raising money for a non-profit community Early Learning Centre. An event not to be missed by art lovers!

Last Tuesday a male was stopped when he was driving on Golf Course Road late at night. He was breath tested and blew 983 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. This is well over twice the legal limit. On Thursday staff at Cardrona ski field dealt with a male in his 20's who used the ski lift with an invalid ski pass. Police have yet to speak to this male. On Friday at Hawea Flat, police were called to assist QLDC staff who were dealing with 2 loose dogs. The dogs had attacked and injured some chickens. The owner of the dogs has been identified and the QLDC are investigating the matter. In the early hours of Sunday two males who were unknown to each other, were removed from a bar due to be being intoxicated. Outside, one of the males has punched the other male in the head. The offender has been apprehended and faces a court appearance for common assault. We have had another report of stolen skis and poles from up at a ski resort. This is another reminder to keep your equipment visible when you take your breaks. Police have been carrying out speed enforcement outside local schools as part of a back to school campaign following the school holidays. Just be aware of your speed. There is a 4km/h tolerance level within school zones. We are also monitoring speed around school buses. If you choose to overtake a bus that has stopped to pick up or drop off children then the speed limit drops to 20km/h. Lastly, we are still getting reports of black ice in the mornings on the mountain passes and roads with shaded areas. So please continue to take care when driving.

Council Snippets Wanaka Community Pool The Council will spend around $115,000 strengthening the Wanaka pool building so it meets minimum earthquake standards and can reopen. Design work is beginning immediately with the strengthening to be done as soon as the work has received building consent. It could take up to two months, and in the meantime Wanaka residents can swim at the Cromwell or Frankton pools for less than they would have paid in Wanaka and their concession passes will also be accepted. The strengthening is a temporary measure while the Council decides the best long-term option for providing swimming facilities in Wanaka.

Remember to Register your Dog If you own a dog, remember to pay the annual registration fee by 31 July. From 1 August it will cost you an extra 50% on the bill.
