BUILD NEW ENGLAND AWARDS PROGRAM
WELCOME TO BUILD NEW ENGLAND AWARDS 2013!
T
oday, the concept of teamwork in building tomorrow’s facilities is even more important than in the past. This is the theme of the Build New
England Awards program – recognizing project teams for their collaborative approach to planning, designing and building facilities that meet the vision and goals of the owner and enhance the community in which the project resides.
displayed during the process of heralding these high-performing teams. The entries represent a wide spectrum of firms, project teams and facility types completed over the last two years. Some of these projects are very large and complex while others may be smaller in size but highly valued by the owner or the constituency that it serves.
I want to thank all of the firms that answered the Call for Submissions for the 2013 Awards program. This is a juried awards program comprised of professionals from all facets of the built environment. Each juror has spent many hours individually and jointly to arrive at the award selections. To the jurors, AGC offers a special thank you for all the time and effort that each

ABM Mechanical, Porter Drywall Internationally renowned among scientists for its pioneering discoveries and major advances in ocean research technologies and education, Bigelow Laboratory is among only a few independent non-profit institutions in the world whose research ranges from microbial oceanography to the large-scale processes that drive ocean ecosystems and global environmental conditions. Originally projected to receive LEED Gold designation, the entire threebuilding campus ultimately became the first scientific research laboratory to achieve LEED Platinum status in Maine. The entire campus is energy
efficient, with interior and exterior building materials chosen for their low carbon footprint, high use of recycle content, sustainable manufacturing process, and lifecycle durability. This project triggered economic growth, provided new jobs in the region and is expected to create significant growth in the state’s science and technology sectors. An economic impact analysis projected that over the next five years, activities at Bigelow will lead to new patents, intellectual property licensing, product development and the creation of startup companies, attracting approximately $44 million in new money to the state.

Boston University’s Student Services Center project is a perfect model of teamwork in action. The design and construction teams worked seamlessly to create a facility that fulfilled BU’s need for a centralized student presence on the institution’s East Campus within an extremely fast-track 13-month construction schedule. Faced with the challenge of constructing a building including three floors of stacked dining space (and 11 kitchens), the team utilized advanced BIM technologies to facilitate coordination to prevent potential clashes and eliminate schedule delays. Collaborative pre-planning services, most crucially related to the completion of the building’s foundation, saved approximately three weeks in schedule for the project. The result of the team’s careful planning, design, and construction is a beautifully designed facility integrated into Boston’s Kenmore Square that has quickly become a popular student destination.

Integral Subcontractors: TCT Roofing, Inc., Tim’s Fabricators, Covenant Fire Protection Abbot Mill is an eclectic collection of 12 mill buildings converted to housing. The buildings, constructed between the 1880s and 1950s, are a component of the historic-registered Forge village. The interconnected buildings were built to meet new manufacturing, office, or warehousing demands of the day and the range of architectural styles included factory interpretation of the Greek Revival, plus Victorian, Modern, and International trends; windows, doors, proportions, and workmanship differed throughout. The project entailed restoration, modernization and reconfiguration of 209,000 square feet to 131 apartments, each unit with a unique footprint. The Abbot Mill project reclaimed an architectural artifact of New England industrial history and, with true Yankee ingenuity, reinvented the space for modern lifestyle and function while simultaneously preserving its past with beauty and integrity. Project: University of Massachusetts Medical School Albert Sherman Center, Worcester, MA
Owner: University of Massachusetts Primary Designer: ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge Contractor: Suffolk Construction Company
Integral Subcontractors: Century Drywall, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc., New England Lab Casework Co., Inc. The Center is a new, 512,000-square-foot biomedical research and educational facility that expands and unifies the UMass Medical School’s Worcester campus, doubles its research capacity and supports the school’s new learner-centered curriculum. The interdisciplinary research and education facility was created to foster interaction and collaboration among scientists and promote innovation and synergies across disciplines. It was successfully built as a flexible lab environment in order to accommodate the ever-changing and evolving world of biomedical research.
The project is a clear example of how upfront planning, team-wide collaboration and providing smart technologies can lead to the successful delivery of a project. The team was flexible and creative, provided innovative solutions to challenges and created an environment of collaboration and communication, which resulted in a true partnership among owner, designer, contractor and subcontractors. As a result, the client’s expectations were exceeded, the project was completed on schedule and under budget, and a new standard for medical research and education aimed at curing diseases has been set.

Contractor: Consigli Construction Co., Inc.
Integral Subcontractors: Heritage Restoration Inc., Broadway Electrical Co., Inc., SOS Corporation
The renovation and modernization of an airport parking garage and surrounding roadways may be an unlikely award nominee; however, when a project nets multimillion dollars in savings and is constructed 11 months ahead of schedule as a result of planning, scheduling, extraordinary team collaboration and development of innovative construction solutions, a closer look is recommended. Boston Logan International Airport, New England’s largest transportation center, generates $7 billion in economic activity each year. To make the airport safer, more secure and environmentally friendly for the tens of millions of passengers who use it each year, Massport undertook a total rehabilitation of the Terminal B Garage and the supporting roadway system.

Owner: Harvard Law School Primary Designer: Robert A.M. Stern Contractor: Skanska USA Building
I ntegral Subcontractors: JF White Contracting Company, Betons Prefabriques du Lac, Millwork One
During the preconstruction and construction of this project, the team encountered many challenges, which included formulating an innovative plan for cleanup of site contamination, developing a viable plan to build a four-story underground garage and one-story basement level in light of site contamination, demolishing an existing garage found to contain asbestos, and renovating Harkness Commons, an architecturally significant building without reliable as-builts, all in accordance with the academic calendar. These challenges were successfully addressed by working with the owner and the team to devise out-of-the-box solutions, thus allowing Harvard Law to move forward with its original, full building program. A four-year-long project, the new Harvard Law School was completed 34 days ahead of schedule and within budget. Enhanced site safety, the innovative use of technology, the development of technical solutions that provided tremendous positive advantage to the client, respect for the environment and stakeholders, and strong communication between the owner and team contributed significantly to the project’s overall success.

Throughout its history, Long Wharf Theatre has created a unique home in New Haven for artists from around the world. As a not-for-profit organization, the Connecticut Players Foundation had limited resources to complete substantial renovations on a very tight time schedule. Integral Subcontractors: 1 Weather Barriers, Architectural 1 Conservation Services, Chameleon Coatings Restoration of historic places is always challenging, but the constrained site, harsh weather conditions, and demanding history of the Winslow Homer Studio makes it a particularly fascinating project deserving of a Build New England Award. Historically heavy snowfalls and storms threatened to derail an aggressive schedule which was already governed by the requirement that no construction take place during the summer months. A change in abutters to the Studio further complicated the schedule by limiting the work site to just the 50 by 100-foot lot, requiring the project team to be flexible and extremely efficient in their coordination. Producing a high quality building is and should be the goal for every construction project. But defining “high quality” can produce substantially different responses as the baseline standard can range greatly from person to person. Does it mean building to the design specifications and turning the owner’s vision into a reality? Is it about incorporating high end, expensive materials? Or is it just about ensuring that the building functions as it should –
without leaks or malfunctioning systems? This new Center fulfills all of those requirements and so many more. It was designed and built to greater than industry standards for building tolerances. Every detail of this building was meticulously thought out, designed, and executed. There is not a brick out of place or a window that does not line up. In terms of symmetry, it is close to perfection.

Project: Runway 33L End Safety Area Improvements Project, Logan International Airport, East Boston, MA
Owner: Massport
Design/Builder: JF White Contracting Company/Jacobs Engineering Owner’s Representative: Fay, Spofford & Thorndike Integral Subcontractors: Stantec Consulting Services, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, GEI Consultants, Vine Associates The project’s purpose was to increase safety for aircraft and passengers in emergency situations by enhancing the runway safety area at the end of Logan Airport’s Runway 33L. This was accomplished by installing an Engineered Material Arresting System and upgrading the runway approach lighting system. The program included the construction of a 600-foot-long by 300-foot-wide runway safe area, constructed partially on land and partially on a pile-supported precast concrete deck over the harbor, as well as a 1,740-foot-long by 8-foot-wide approach light pier in the harbor. Open lines of communication exceeded all expectations. From the initial design/build team kick-off meeting, which included Massport, FAA, the owner’s representative team to the weekly staff meetings, specific meetings, operational meetings with Massport, and bi-monthly update meetings with Massport senior officials, every step of the project was effectively communicated to the owner.

The library modernization project took place in the heart of the campus. The design encompassed a number of sustainable building features including the low emissivity roof that reduces heat gain and includes photovoltaicready infrastructure. A closed-loop geothermal system meets 100 percent of the heating and cooling loads, with radiant flooring and active chilled beams providing an efficient delivery system. Careful siting and fenestration maximize benefits from solar orientation. The project is on track for LEED Platinum certification. The true measure of a collaborative, high-performing team is how it responds in the face of challenges that arise during the course of the project. Commitment to project success superseded “cover your back” tactics. Open communication won out over hidden agendas. Testimonials from the full range of team members attest to not only the success of the project from a design and construction perspective, but also the outstanding teamwork that drove that success.

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S BUSINESS Safety is everyone’s business! When an incident occurs on a construction site, it affects not only the individual and the family, but also every member of the building team – developer, building owner, designers, subcontractors and constructors. It also impacts the community in which the project dwells. Creating a culture of safe work practices on the job site and throughout a company’s operation is an investment in the future of your firm and your employees. It can decrease the likelihood of OSHA fines and costly litigation, create healthier, more productive workers and cut down on time loss and employee absences. AGC has an OSHA certified trainer and safety consultant on staff a phone call away to assist you with all your safety needs. • On-site OSHA training • Third-party inspections • Job site risk assessment • Outsourced site safety • Post-OSHA inspection representation • Custom-written Health and Safety Programs
