CREATING COOPERATIVE POWER If there is a single concept that clearly differentiates credit unions from every other business that provides financial services, it is cooperation. In saying this, I in no way look to diminish the many outstanding things that credit unions do in regard to service, innovation or value, but what makes us unique and distinct is our commitment to cooperation.

In turn, it is the fact that we embrace cooperation that has led to the ever-widening success of the credit union movement.

Cooperation is the backbone of the credit union movement on every level. The simple idea of cooperative credit, people coming together to create a member-owned financial institution is the very cornerstone of the credit union movement. The visionaries that were responsible for launching those first credit unions also understood how important it was for the credit unions starting to work together and to share resources. So, unlike for-profit banks that hid knowledge and resources from each other, early credit unions shared them and their success multiplied accordingly.

The credit unions of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island are in the process of building a new relationship that reflects the understanding that cooperation is where our real strength lies. Over the next few months, credit unions in each of our states will be considering and then voting on a proposal that will merge the Massachusetts Credit Union League, New Hampshire Credit Union League, and the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island. This unique merger proposal is built around the principle of cooperation. It calls for maintaining a unique identity for each state while making it possible for our credit unions to share resources on an even deeper level.

We know from the many years that our credit unions have worked together, that our credit unions have a great deal in common.

We also know that we can make decisions that benefit all of our credit unions whether they are on Aquidneck Island or in the North Country of New Hampshire. Our needs and goals have far more similarities than they do differences.

The merger will bring many tangible benefits because as we create efficiencies we free up resources that we can use to expand member service, public advocacy campaigns, and compliance support. We are already moving on these types of initiatives, but when we are working together as one organization we can achieve some terrific results. One example is our new publication, the Daily CU Scan. By focusing our energy on a single publication for all of the credit unions we serve, we are able to produce a high quality publication every day.

One of the principles that I and the credit union leaders who sit on the boards of the Leagues were in strict agreement on was that each state must retain its individual identity especially when it comes to advocacy. The credit unions of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island must be able to represent their interests as a group when they are at the state capital speaking to legislators or regulators. The same holds true for public advocacy and community outreach. We share many interests and maintaining a local presence is one of the most important.

As we move through the merger discussions and ultimately the vote, I am sure that there will be many questions and much frank discussion. I look forward to it and hope that, if you have questions, you will call me and ask me in to speak with your boards or senior management team about what our new merged organization will look like. I think that you will agree that this new structure will help all credit unions in our three states continue to grow and become stronger as we work together to Create Cooperative Power. • Paul Gentile, president

2013 SPRINT ANNUAL WRAP-UP CELEBRATION

Credit union members continued to save with Sprint in 2013, thanks to their credit unions’ participation in Invest-in-America’s Sprint Credit Union Member Discount Program.

To celebrate their successful year, 12 credit union leaders gathered at the Credit Union Center in Marlborough, MA, for a special breakfast on December 20 to collect the incentives they earned for supporting the pop-

ular campaign. In total, $160,000 in incentives was paid to 40 credit unions.

“It is easy to be a part of the Sprint program,” said Jonah Wein of Crescent Credit Union, one of the first to take part five years ago. “Invest-in-America provides the marketing materials, and the League provides the support. Working together, we save our members money with programs like this.”

Sprint is proud of its collaboration with credit unions, and has been a faithful supporter of the Invest-in-America program.

This program is a great way for credit unions to earn non-interest income as well as promote the added value of credit union membership.

The League’s/Association’s newsletter Daily CU Scan is staking out space on Twitter in order to get the latest breaking news out to member credit unions on a real-time basis. “Social media tools like Twitter have become part of the fabric of today’s communications environment.

Credit unions can use social media to keep members plugged in with the latest news of the credit union,” said League/ Association President Paul Gentile. He went on to say, “Here at the League/Association we will use Twitter to disseminate news of credit unions, the system, the League/Association, and occasionally some fun stuff as well.”

According to the plan, as @DailyCUScan gathers momentum, it will be a focal point of a larger Twitter community of local credit unions who are sharing news and information. This kind of presence will raise the profile of credit unions among younger consumers and journalists who make great use of the medium.

BELLWETHER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION WINS EXCELLENCE AWARD Local Credit Unions Win Diamond Awards at CUNA Marketing & Business Development Conference

The CUNA Marketing & Business Development Council’s Diamond Awards competition took place during the Council’s 21st annual conference held March 12-15, in Orlando, FL. The awards recognize outstanding new marketing and business development approaches with potential for universal application across the industry. Without regard to asset size, a panel of judges selected winners based on strategy, process, application, and results. Representatives from the winning credit unions were present at the conference to accept their award.

Bellwether Community Credit Union, headquartered in Manchester, NH, received the coveted Excellence Award for their branding engagement program. Bellwether was looking for a creative way to educate and engage employees with their brand, “Where Easy Adds Up.” Rather than just do a standard training session, their goal was to do something out of the ordinary that would reenergize and be remembered by employees.

An internal cross-functional team launched an event themed as a Hollywood awards night – complete with a red carpet entrance, paparazzi, live music, and celebrities.

To bring the theme to life, the event was held at the historic Palace Theatre in Manchester.

A combination of video and live acting was used to explain the importance of branding

and reinforce the four pillars of Bellwether’s brand promise. Two credit union employees, dressed in tuxes, hosted the awards show by recognizing individuals or departments for living out Bellwether’s brand.

The event was centered on two internal brand programs. The “DIME” (“Did I Make it EASY?”) rewards program recognizes credit union employees who demonstrate one of Bellwether’s brand tenets to a member. DIME recipients are recognized in a company-wide morning “huddle” and receive a DIME coin imprinted with the Bellwether logo and the four brand pillars. When an employee collects 20 DIME coins, they can be redeemed for a $50 gift card. The “Ideas for Change” program allows employees to suggest ideas to improve processes, paperwork, or products solutions to make interactions easier for members.

“It has been thrilling to see the transformation in the credit union as employees go from understanding and remembering our brand promise to actively living it out in their interactions with members,” said Nathan Saller, vice president of sales and marketing at Bellwether Community Credit Union. “It is rewarding and humbling to have CUNA recognize our team’s hard work in light of the wonderful things being done by so many other credit unions across the country.

This event is a true partnership every step of the way. Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union plays a central role in organizing the event from fundraising to volunteer coordination and event logistics. The credit unions of Rhode Island and the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island actively support this effort by contributing time, money, and en-

thusiasm. The support of the tournament is a reflection of the importance that the credit unions of Rhode Island place on supporting the youth of the Ocean State.

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL), which is the governing body for high school student athletics, has been a tremendous partner over the years and graciously makes a big effort to recognize the support that they get from the Rhode Island credit union community. During the tournament, visitors to the Ryan Center see banners and signs everywhere recognizing the credit union sponsorship of the event.

In addition, credit unions are thanked with pro-credit union messages by the announcers throughout the game and credit union leaders are called on to help distribute trophies to the participants during the postgame ceremonies.

This year the event took place with games at the Ryan Center on Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22.

DCU for Kids, the nonprofit charitable foundation of Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU), headquartered in Marlborough, MA, sponsored the second annual Bullying Prevention and Education Conference.

Over 300 educators, juvenile justice, and law enforcement professionals from across the commonwealth were in attendance at the conference. The conference was organized by the Bullying Remediation and Court Education (BRACE) Project, a collaboration of the Worcester Public Schools, Youth Opportunities Upheld (YOU) Inc., the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the Worcester County Juvenile Court & Probation Department, and the Worcester Police Department.

Guest speakers included: Elizabeth Folcarelli, president and CEO, YOU Inc.; Robert F. Pezzella, Worcester Public Schools/school safety liaison; Dr. Melinda Boone, superintendent of Worcester Public Schools; and The Honorable Joseph D. Early Jr., district attorney for Worcester County.

The Bullying Prevention and Education Conference is part of DCU for Kids’ ongoing initiatives to address the serious concerns of bullying. On their involvement with the conference, John LaHair, DCU’s public relations manager and DCU for Kids board member, said, “Through the efforts of BRACE Project partners and this conference, we are cooperatively taking steps that will help prevent bullying and create a climate in our schools and our communities in which all children can feel safe.”

NEW HAMPSHIRE CREDIT UNION LEAGUE HOSTS LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION

The New Hampshire Credit Union League hosted its annual Legislative Reception on Thursday, March 6, at the law offices of Rath, Young and Pignatelli in Concord, NH. Thirty credit union officials greeted members of the New Hampshire Senate, House Commerce and Consumer Affairs Committee, and the New Hampshire Banking Department during the two-hour event.

League President Paul Gentile welcomed the

legislators and credit union representatives to the reception on behalf of the League. He informed the group of how well the New Hampshire credit unions are doing regarding loan growth up 10.39 percent, membership growth increased by 4.7 percent, and for being second in the nation with the lowest delinquency rate of 0.5 percent.

Gentile commended the credit unions for doing “an excellent job of serving their members.”

He recognized members of the League Board along with Bank Commissioner Glenn Perlow and thanked all the members of the Senate and House for attending. Gentile introduced Senate President Chuck Morse, who addressed the group.

Morse reiterated Gentile’s remarks, saying, “New Hampshire’s credit unions are great and important to the state of New Hampshire in helping the local economy grow.” He added, “Small businesses also need help and credit unions play a significant role in assisting them.”

He thanked the credit unions and encouraged them to continue working together to make

positive things happen.

Sen. Lou D’Allesandro also addressed the group and praised the credit unions for playing such a vital role in the economic viability of the state. He shared his personal recount of purchasing his first home for $17,500 and was thankful for the guidance he received from his credit union back then, Telephone Worker’s Credit Union, Manchester, NH (currently Bellwether Community Credit Union). The support and advice he received made purchasing his first home a great experience. He urged credit unions not to lose that “personal” connection to members by reaching out and taking care of members’ needs, providing quality service, and giving the best member service. D’Allesandro is the current chairman of board for MembersFirst Credit Union, Manchester, NH. The members of the legislature who were present appreciated the opportunity to meet with the credit union officials and expressed their interest in working with members of the credit union movement.

CREDIT UNIONS HOST GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS DAY IN RHODE ISLAND

The Credit Union Association of Rhode Island hosted its annual Credit Union Governmental Affairs Day at the State House on Thursday, February 7. In recognition of the importance of the day, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee declared it to be Credit Union Day in Rhode Island. Over 80 credit union officials and lawmakers participated in the event. Sev12 | centerpoint | summer.2014

eral members of the State House leadership, members of the Corporations Committees, and many other friends of credit unions joined in the celebration. Senator Chris Ottiano and Senator William Walaska, lawmakers who volunteer service at credit unions, helped to lead the delegation of lawmakers attending the event.

Welcoming remarks were provided by Association President/CEO Paul Gentile, who emphasized our State House message: Credit unions are local cooperatives helping working families achieve economic success.

Gentile complimented local credit unions on their strong lending growth, one of the highest in the nation, 10.70 percent, at a time when members are most in need. The fact that credit unions continue to step up to do more to serve their members in challenging economic times is a strong testament to fulfilling our historic mission today.

He also introduced the keynote speaker, Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, who recently received the CUNA Desjardins Financial Literacy Award for her outstanding efforts in this area. Raimondo has the distinction of being the first public policymaker to receive this national award from credit unions.

Raimondo opened her address by stating that she is a “huge fan” of credit unions and praised the partnership she has with credit unions. Raimondo observed that consumers are struggling either without jobs or with only part-time employment, yet still have mortgages, property taxes, and daily expenses to pay.

She emphasized the many achievements that result by working together such as financial counseling corps, EverFi, and Credit Union Reality Fairs. Raimondo stated that when the private sector and the government sector come together, then success is achieved.

Twenty Massachusetts credit unions, along with the Massachusetts Credit Union League, made a “Blanket Statement” during the month of January with the Credit Union Community Hope Initiative’s fourth annual Blanket Drive to help support the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless and many local agencies across the state. These blankets truly make a difference for the hundreds of children and families who seek relief from the harsh winter temperatures.

A total of 661 blankets were donated to the Coalition, and many community agencies throughout the state, including: • Alternative House, Lowell • Lowell Transitional Living Center, Lowell • Amherst Survival Center, Amherst • Northampton Survival Center, • Battered Women’s Shelter, Fitchburg Northampton • Beverly Bootstraps, Beverly • Our Father’s House, Fitchburg • Citizens for Adequate Housing, Peabody • Pathways Shelter, Framingham • Emmaus, Inc., Haverhill • Pettingill House, Amesbury • First Church, Sterling • Quincy Community Action Program, • Ginny’s Helping Hand, Leominster Quincy • Hap Housing, Springfield • Sterling Fire Department, Sterling • Holden Senior Center, Holden • Veteran’s Shelter, Worcester • Jeremiah’s Inn, Worcester UMassFive College Federal Credit Union, Hadley, MA. went beyond blankets and collected 117 items of winter clothing including coats, boots, sweaters/sweatshirts, pants, hats, gloves, and socks.

The top five credit unions that collected the most blankets were: Quincy Credit Union, 152; MassMutual Federal Credit Union, Springfield, MA, 70; Leominster Credit Union, 52; Metro Credit Union, Chelsea, 50; and Align Credit Union, Lowell, MA, 38.

Somewhere, there is a child or family who is cold, and the credit unions listed below did something about it by giving the gift of warmth for many who seek relief from the bitter cold.

All the credit unions that participated were supportive and grateful for the opportunity to donate blankets, especially during such a frigid and snowy winter. Hanscom Federal Credit Union Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta summed it up best when he said, “The Coalition works tirelessly to address an issue that is close to home. Blankets are just one simple but important example, and we will continue to provide support any way we can.”

Since 2011, the credit unions in Massachusetts have donated 2,375 blankets throughout the state to keep families and individuals warm against the harsh elements of winter.

LEAGUE PRESENTS $120,000 CHECK TO MA COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS

Massachusetts credit unions continue to display their extraordinary generosity with their support of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless through the Credit Union Community Hope Initiative. The Credit Union Community Hope Initiative reached its goal of raising $110,000 in December 2013 to support the Coalition. In addition, the Massachusetts Credit Union League (League) sent a donation of $10,000 to the Coalition for its Annual Gala in May 2013 for the Rising Stars Initiative centered on youth.

On January 23, 2014, the League’s Social Responsibility Committee Chair, Nicole James and League President/CEO Paul Gentile, along with several committee members presented the Coalition’s Executive Director Robyn Frost with a ceremonial check for $120,000 representing the overall donation to the Coalition. “The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless and the families that we serve throughout the year are grateful to the Massachusetts credit unions for the financial support we receive,” stated Frost when she accepted the check. She noted, “It is only with the collective generosity from the credit unions that the Coalition can be a place for families and individuals to turn when the unthinkable possibility of becoming homeless happens.”

Sixty-one credit unions throughout Massachusetts who supported a wide variety of fundraising activities made this donation possible. The biggest individual contribution came from RTN Federal Credit Union, Waltham, raising more than $31,300 through various initiatives, the largest being the “Walk Home.” The 2013 “Walk Home” created a great deal of excitement as the credit union expanded the event to three locations on June 1, 2013 – Greater Boston, Metro West, and the North Shore. Each location attracted over 25 walkers and raised more than $22,000 as part of the $31,300.

Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Hanscom AFB, continues to be a top donor as well, with a tremendous effort in 2013. Through the generosity of volunteers, members, and staff, Hanscom Federal Credit Union donated more than $13,500 in total from fundraising activities held at the credit union and additional donations.

Credit unions including Boston Firefighters Credit Union, Brotherhood Credit Union, Lynn, Digital Federal Credit Union, Marlborough, Harvard University Employees Credit Union, Cambridge, Members Plus Credit Union, Somerville, and Workers’ Credit Union, Fitchburg, showed major support by donating $2,000 and more.

Gentile remarked, “I’m truly impressed at the level of support that Massachusetts credit unions demonstrate for this fine organization.”

Frost praised the benevolent spirit of Massachusetts credit unions and expressed her gratitude for them. “With one in seven children in Massachusetts now growing up in poverty, the level of assistance their families need to escape homelessness has never been greater. It is the financial assistance that the Coalition receives from credit unions across our state that allows us to be there when families are in need,” exclaimed Frost.

MASSACHUSETTS COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS TO HONORS LEAGUE AT GALA The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless hosted its Annual Gala on Thursday, May 15, at the Liberty Hotel in Boston.

The Gala’s theme was ”Sweet Dreams,” and it was held to benefit the Coalition’s “A Bed for Every Child” initiative. The Massachusetts Credit Union League was honored by the Coalition at this event.

Volunteers from Pawtucket Credit Union, Pawtucket, RI, People’s Credit Union, Middletown, RI, and Westerly Community Credit Union, Westerly, RI, answered hundreds of calls throughout the day at the phone bank during the 10th Annual Hasbro Children’s Hospital Radiothon on April 3. Rhode Island Credit Union, Providence, RI, was among the many sponsors who also participated during the event.

More than 30 patients and their families took to the airwaves to share their stories of medical struggles and triumphs in support of the Radiothon. The community came together to donate $444,917 to support pediatric care, family programs, and leading-edge research at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The annual Radiothon broadcast is a partnership of Providence Cumulus radio stations, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Over the course of the 15 hour event, listeners heard inspiring stories of hope and healing from patient families and caregivers alike, about circumstances as varied as neurology, surgery, cancer, and palliative care. Many local sports celebrities visited with the kids, families, and volunteers in the course of the event.

“Hasbro Children’s Hospital has helped raise a generation of healthy kids over the past 20 years, and the ongoing support of our Radiothon donors, volunteers, individuals, families, and businesses has been crucial to keeping us at our best for all the kids and families who need us,” said Dr. Timothy Babineau, president, Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The credit unions in Rhode Island have been supporting Hasbro Children’s Hospital through the Children’s Miracle Network since 2007 and have donated more than $23,700. Each year credit union volunteers devote time during the Radiothon and help raise funds for such a worthy cause.

HANSCOM FEDERAL CREDIT UNION BOARD MARKS 60 YEARS WITH $260,000 DONATION Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Hanscom AFB, MA, is excited to celebrate 60 years as a credit union with the largest charitable gift in its history. The board of directors voted to commemorate the anniversary by donating $260,000 to the Hanscom FCU Charitable Foundation. With this gift, the Foundation, established in 2012, can expand support for the credit union’s charitable partners.

“As a board, we are proud of our history of ‘people helping people,’” said Chairman of the Board Paul J. Marotta. “Now, we have the honor of providing a substantial gift to the Foundation. I can’t wait to see the benefits to our service area that happen because of the Foundation.”

The Hanscom FCU Charitable Founda-

tion has worked extensively with neighbors on Massachusetts’ military bases, as well as military and veteran support groups such as Boston Fisher House and the New England Center for Homeless Veterans. The Foundation also takes great pride in long-running relationships with preeminent organizations such as Children’s Hospital Boston and the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.

GREAT NEW ENGLAND CREDIT UNION SHOW LIVES UP TO ITS NAME Sixth Annual Conference Well Attended and Well Received

By Cassidy Murphy The Great New England Credit Union Show, held for the sixth time this year on April 30 in Boxborough, MA, lived up to the hype. The more than 450 credit union professionals attended breakout sessions, visited with vendors, and networked with each other, all in the spirit of “people helping people.”

Sponsored by The Warren Group and the Massachusetts Credit Union League, the New Hampshire Credit Union League, and the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island, the show also honored Credit Union Rising Stars at an invitation-only breakfast (see profiles and photos, facing page).

Paul Gentile, new president of the Leagues/Association, played a big part in the show’s success, leading the Rising Stars breakfast, speaking at a concurrent session, and leading a general session discussion on the future of the industry, as well as moderating a panel of Leagues/Association stalwarts at the invitation-only Leadership Luncheon.

“Not only was this year’s show a terrific opportunity for our credit unions to interact with fellow credit union leaders and key credit union vendors, but we also packed in a lot of high-quality education,” Gentile said. “From Risk Based Net Worth to new technologies, this year’s show had tremendous value-add on the content side. We hope to continue that trend going forward.”

He also introduced the keynote speaker at the Rising Stars breakfast, Major General Timothy McHale of Homes for Our Troops, a nonprofit that assists severely injured veterans with housing needs. McHale’s moving speech and call to action resulted in an immediate donation from Gentile for the planned construction of a home for New Hampshire resident Matthew DeWitt, injured in Iraq. I moved from D.C. to Boston three years ago to work at Mass Bay and create a new department. The member development department did not exist before I arrived at Mass Bay, so I had the unique opportunity to form a business plan, make my own goals and ideas and execute them. Being in a new city and having to quickly find relationships to become more involved in the community was a challenge, but an exciting opportunity to meet people.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I volunteer for the South Boston based Catholic Charities Labouré Center’s Planning Committee every year, and help organize the annual Boston Reality Fair for Boston public high school students. I plan various other events at Mass Bay, such as the Coat & Warm Clothing Drive, Thanksgiving Food Drive, and the Children’s Book Drive.

What do you consider your biggest success?

Since I started at Mass Bay Credit Union over three years ago, membership has continued to increase, especially in the community group. As the marketing and member development manager, I’d like to think a large part of that is due to my day to day meetings with community groups, involvement in local programs, attending hew hire orientations at SEG groups, and the marketing plan I implemented.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I believe in the credit union principles, including the social purpose of “people helping people.” I think it’s refreshing to work for a place that follows that mantra.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

A good part of my job includes going out into the community and SEG groups to talk about the benefits of joining our credit union, and I enjoy how I can stand behind the credit union ideals and principles proudly. I don’t have to make anything seem better or look better; it is a straightforward marketing approach with a great product. It’s not a tough sell.

Thanks to the knowledge gained at the credit union, I felt properly guided and educated when I purchased my own home last year. I feel confident guiding our community in accessing credit education and community first-time homebuyer resources to achieve homeownership.

I was just 19 when I started with the credit union seven years ago, and I was drawn to an opportunity to work in finance.

What has kept me with the credit union is the gratification of helping to better my members and community through offering credit education, and being able to say yes to loan applicants with bruised credit; I can truly say I’m helping my members and community.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I started my career at a large bank, and the model of product-dumping to meet goals rather than advancing the customer’s financial wellbeing did not sit well with me. I heard that credit unions were member-oriented and their primary goal was to improve their member’s financial situation by offering products that met their needs. My goal has always been to look out for other’s best interest and help them advance. By going to a credit union, I would satisfy my appetite for banking and continue to work on my goal of looking out for others.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

I appreciate the ability to help members achieve their financial goals; it gives me satisfaction to see the look on their face when their financial dream becomes a reality. I’ve been able to cultivate strong business relationships that have led to the development of a network full of relationships.

What do you consider the highlight of your career so far?

The success of the family I coached in the Moneystrong for Life Challenge in 2012. The program challenges families who are in financial hardship and works with them to help reduce debt, increase savings, and learn how to be financially responsible. The Leo family was very successful and were able to pay down a great deal of debt, increasing their savings and improving their credit scores – and they won the challenge. A year later, they were able to buy their first home. It was very rewarding to know that our knowledge and guidance helped a family move from being in financially dire straits to being financially responsible.

Tell us about your community involvement.

Some of my volunteer work includes: Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA); Junior Achievement; the Lowell Folk Festival; Lowell Day Nursery; and Rebuilding Lowell, which assists low-income and elderly residents and veterans with home repairs. I’m continually looking for ways to give my time back to the community.

What do you consider your biggest success?

The achievement of my employees. I want my employees to discover where they want their career to go, and I want to help them get there. Their work and dedication is what drives results for our department, and I could not be successful without them.

Their achievement means that I’ve succeeded as a manager and a leader.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

The thing that attracted me most to working towards a credit union, Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union in particular, was the service that I was provided as a member, as well as the community involvement.

I love the strong focus on community. And it’s not just Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union – all the local credit unions all have a strong focus on the community.

Starting at Metro Credit Union as a teller and working my way up to assistant vice president – branch manager. I was able to experience different positions in the branch, giving me a greater respect and understanding of all branch staff.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I’m currently the Chelsea Kiwanis Club president, the Chelsea Collaborative vice president, and the Chelsea Community Fund clerk. Having the opportunity to be on different boards of directors is important, but being able to make a difference in the community is what matters most. I also enjoy assisting nonprofits and high school students with financial literacy educational seminars in the city of Chelsea.

What do you consider your biggest success?

Going back to school and getting my degree after being out of school for 11 years. It was only a dream a few years ago, something I always said I wanted to do, but never thought would be possible. With the support of my manager and my credit union, I will be graduating this May with my associate’s degree in business administration.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I came to the credit union simply looking for a job after being laid off. Once I joined Metro Credit Union, I realized the job was more than just cashing checks and crossselling products. I instantly knew that I was part of a family of people helping people.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

I appreciate how credit unions are able to educate the community on products and services that can enhance their financial stability. What do you consider the highlight of your career so far?

Being given the opportunity to grow professionally at CPCU. I started as a teller and was given the opportunity to work in marketing; within a few years I filled roles as a marketing assistant, then marketing coordinator and now as marketing manager. To see all my hard work recognized in this Rising Star award is certainly a highlight as well.

What do you consider the highlight of your career so far?

I had only been employed by Navigant Credit Union for seven months when I was asked to become involved with a large project, the renaming and rebranding of our 91-year-old credit union, previously known as Credit Union Central Falls. I learned a lot in a short amount of time.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I coordinated and supported collections for food, coat, and toiletry drives to benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition. I also implemented the annual Miracle Jeans Day initiative to raise money for Boston Children’s Hospital. I assist with writing press releases and coordinating local events for the Inman Square Business Association.

This past year, I coordinated and participated in Community Cooks to supply muchneeded food for a youth group in Somerville.

Tell us about your community involvement.

Navigant Credit Union provides many opportunities that allow me to get involved.

Most recently, I volunteered at the Pawtucket Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the city of Central Falls’ Earth Day. I also serve as the vice president on the board of directors for the Cumberland/Lincoln Boys and Girls Club.

What do you consider your biggest success?

Among many successes, the greatest was obtaining a master’s in advertising while working full-time. It was challenging to work all day and then dedicate myself to schoolwork several nights a week, but it was well worth it. I now implement the skills I’ve learned in the workplace to do an even better job in my marketing role.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I grew up in the area and saw that the credit union was always engaged with the community. I love that it is a close-knit community and the credit union’s efforts clearly make a difference. It is nice to do something and be able to hear from people directly on the impacts we’ve made.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

I like that we connect with the community on a personal level. It sounds cliché, but it is nice to see people and know them by name at the branches or at community events.

What do you consider your biggest success?

Marrying my best friend, and having two beautiful children together. I am pretty proud of some other accomplishments, but that tops everything.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

Initially the credit union was just a job. That’s what you need when you graduate college, right? I quickly realized that management at the credit union shared the same morals and values as myself, and that I looked forward to going to work every day. Additionally, I am a person who inherently likes to help others.

This coincided nicely with Navigant Credit Union’s mission to provide excellent service and assist people with their financial lives. It seems the attraction came after beginning my career at Navigant Credit Union.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

It’s the people. I have made some great friends throughout my career with Navigant Credit Union. From my fellow employees, to the vendors I work with, to the people I have met in the banking industry. I believe these relationships are truly priceless.

Joining Hanscom Federal Credit Union. It is an honor to be a member of the team that was selected as Air Force Credit Union of the Year in 2012. I am very proud of our accomplishments and look forward to the opportunities ahead of us.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I have been involved with the Highland Sports Association since my oldest son stepped on the T-ball field in 2003. Over the past 10 years, I have served in various roles and am presently serving as vice president, team manager and league development officer. I enjoy coaching, teaching and being part of the community.

What do you consider your biggest success?

I was able to help my mom and dad achieve the American Dream. In 1993 my parents, who emigrated to the U.S. from Portugal as teenagers, opened the doors to Price’s and Silva’s Bakery in Lowell, MA. We owned and ran a successful small business. Personally, my biggest success was returning to college after taking a few years off to help my parents get the business up and running. In 1998, I graduated from Merrimack College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, double major in marketing and finance.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

My parents instilled in me the importance of education at a young age. My role at the credit union provides me an opportunity to connect with people daily on how to make money wise decisions. I have found that finding ways to educate and guide members in our community is rewarding and fulfilling. It circles back to the credit union philosophy of people helping people.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

Having worked in the industry for over 15 years, I have built some great relationship with so many people that have the passion for truly wanting to help people and doing the right thing. The ability to share, coach, and learn keeps me inspired each and every day.

Receiving the President’s Award in 2010. The award is presented to an individual who consistently exceeds their individual sales goals, is responsible for significantly increasing loan and deposit growth, and takes on new challenges willingly and successfully incorporates them to benefit Workers Credit Union. I was honored to receive this award, since I had only been with the credit union for three years.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I currently sit on the Greater Lowell Community Service Committee to help coordinate volunteer opportunities that will benefit nonprofit agencies and the community as a whole. I assist the Merrimack Valley Food Bank by setting up drop off locations, collecting food and donate Workers Credit Union’s bags for Operation Nourish. I have volunteered at the Manolis Family Foundation for Project Helping Hands, assembling Thanksgiving dinners for families in need, as well as coordinating the annual Salvation Army Giving Tree program in the branch.

What do you consider your biggest success?

I was promoted to assistant vice president/branch manager in 2012. Since then, I have significantly grown my branch by increasing the net loan balances by $2.5 million and deposit balances by $10 million.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I never understood why people said “a credit union is not a bank” until I started working for one. Working for a credit union, my priority is to provide excellent member service, build relationships, and help individuals and business owners to achieve their financial goals. Being able to offer great products and services and sticking behind our credit union motto of giving back, simply feels good.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

Working in the credit union community has given me the opportunity to make a difference in our members’ lives by returning earnings through better loan and savings rates, lower fees, new products and other innovations to compliment the ever-changing lifestyle of our members.

What do you consider the highlight of your career so far?

I began working for Somerville Municipal Federal Credit Union in the summer of 2011 as a part-time teller and since then rose up to a consumer loan officer position, working side-by-side with the CEO on all loan products offered by the credit union.

Tell us about your community involvement.

I participate in different causes, including Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

What do you consider your biggest success?

I am happy to have had the opportunity to grow in the two and a half years I have been with SMFCU, and become a key member of our senior staff, along with receiving the consumer loan officer title.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

I had worked for two other big banks in the past, but it wasn’t the right fit for me.

My mother suggested that I give the credit union world a shot and it turns out that I love it! The credit union philosophy of “people helping people” is one that I respect and strive to honor every day at work.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

I enjoy the team environment, where everyone’s ideas and suggestions are considered. It is truly amazing how a team of 10 people can run a whole credit union. It sounds cliché, but everyone does become like family.

I commit to a minimum of one charitable event per quarter. My most recent were the Worcester Walk for Cancer and Gingerbread House Making for a woman’s shelter. I also run 5Ks for various charities.

What do you consider your biggest success?

I don’t have one success story that stands out. My greatest successes are ongoing. Specifically, helping our members.

What attracted you to working with a credit union?

The opportunity to have a larger voice in day-to-day operations. I can make a large impact on someone’s financial well-being because I am empowered to do so.

Now that you have been working in your credit union for several years, what do you like best about working in the credit union community?

I enjoy helping our members. Finance is probably the second most stressful aspect of someone’s life, behind relationships. I can play a positive role in a member’s life. At the end of the day, when families gather around the dinner table, have their meal and discuss their day, I want them to talk about their exceptional experience at UMassFIVE.

Pioneer Valley Credit Union Remembers Richard Borden, Vice Chair of the Board Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union (PVCU) Springfield, MA, remembers the life and dedication of a valued member of the credit union family. Vice Chair of the Board of Directors Richard Borden Richard Borden passed away in Springfield, MA. Borden was a member of the PVCU board for over 30 years. His contributions to PVCU through the years have helped to shape the organization that has led PVCU to great success.

Borden proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. He volunteered his time to help better the lives of others by participating in various organizations, including Meals on Wheels, Katelynn’s Ride, and New England Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, of which he was a past president.

In the spring of 2013 he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Massachusetts Credit Union League in recognition of his dedication and service. Borden enjoyed running and participating in the Cherry Blossom Race in Washington D.C. for the Children’s Miracle Network and the Boston Marathon.

Throughout his service on the board of PVCU, Richard Borden’s contributions and commitment truly made a difference not only to the credit union but to the community as a whole.

TRUST Elects New Vice Chair, DCU President Jim Regan, to its Board of Trustees

Andrade Retires after 42 Years of Service at Pawtucket Credit Union

TRUST, the oldest and largest mutual fund family created for and by credit unions, elected Jim Regan as vice chair at its January trustee meeting, and re-elected Jim Barr as chair. Regan has also Jim Regan been an active participant in the Callahan Credit Union Financial Services Limited Partnership (CUFSLP), the administrator of TRUST, for more than a decade.

Regan has been a part of the credit union community since 1992 and is currently president and chief executive officer of Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU), Marlborough, MA. He has served on the TRUST board since 2013.

In response to his recent election, Regan said, “For more than 25 years, TRUST has been providing credit union specific investment options. I believe the industry needs to continue to develop investment vehicles that fit credit unions’ unique needs, and TRUST provides a great platform for doing just that.”

The trustees are a vital component of TRUST’s organizational structure in their role as fiduciaries for investors. They oversee the performance of all the service providers and insure that compliance and risk management practices are always up to date.

Trustees are elected by the shareholders. The combination of credit union experience and independence reflects both the cooperative design and SEC regulations for trustee selection. Andrade “It’s been my pleasure to work alongside Bob for over 22 years. His knowledge of credit union affairs along with his insight regarding member relations has proven invaluable,” said Kozak. “On behalf of the entire PCU team, I wish him the very best.”

Andrade has been with Pawtucket Credit Union for 42 years, and in that time has helped shape the credit union into what it is today.

He began his career in 1972 as office manager.

With that title, and in a simpler time when many hats were worn by the same individual, he became knowledgeable in all facets of the credit union and rose quickly through management.

“When I began my career, PCU had $17 million in assets, one branch and 14 employees. Today, PCU is the largest credit union in Rhode Island, with over $1.5 billion in assets, 15 branch locations, and over 250 employees.

What a tremendous accomplishment. I’m proud to have been a part of it,” said Andrade.

A tireless advocate on credit union issues at both the local and national levels has earned him the Robert P. Andrade Political Advocate Award. He has been recognized as an individual who goes above and beyond philanthropically, within the community as a recipient of the Ben Mondor Award, and has twice been honored by the Pawtucket Lions Club as a Melvin Jones Fellow.

When asked for comment, a humble Andrade responded to the question, “What do you take away from your 42 years of service?” with: “I learn and grow from everyone I’ve ever met. I’ll always remember the people, the relationships, and the friendships formed during my time at PCU.”

Pawtucket Credit Union Announces New Promotions Pawtucket Credit Union, Pawtucket, RI, President and CEO Karl A. Kozak recently announced the following promotions.

Paul Cappello has been promoted to executive vice president and chief lending officer. His responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of real estate, consumer and commercial lending Paul Cappello functions in addition to indirect auto and boat loans, loan servicing and collections. Cappello has been with the credit union for 33 years and previously served as senior vice president/lending. He is past president of the RI Mortgage Bankers Association and holds a bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in economics from Bryant University.

Donna Gregson has been promoted to executive vice president and retail administration. Her responsibilities include oversight of 15 branch locations, facilities, community involvement and financial literacy, and employee Donna Gregson development. Gregson has been with the credit union for 35 years, previously serving as senior vice president/ retail administration. She currently serves as treasurer for the Salvation Army – Pawtucket Corps, and vice president of the Children’s Shelter of Blackstone Valley.

Tim Jermain has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer.

He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of business development, technology, and operaTim Jermain tions. Jermain has been with the credit union for over 10 years, previously serving as senior vice president/business development and technology. He has extensive marketing and management experience from his tenure at the Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams), Stop & Shop Supermarkets, and several financial institutions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Rhode Island.

Valerie Pimenta has been promoted to senior vice president and controller. Her responsibilities include all accounting-related activities for the credit union.

Pimenta has been with Valerie Pimenta the credit union for 17 years, most recently serving as vice president and controller. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and one in French studies from Brown University. She currently serves as trustee and audit committee chairman for the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket.

Kathie Corrigan has been promoted to vice president and internal audit. Her responsibilities include reviewing, appraising and reporting the soundness and adequacy of operational Kathie Corrigan controls. Corrigan has

been with the credit union for 13 years, most recently serving as assistant vice president and internal audit. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Johnson & Wales University and serves as co-president of the Institute of Internal Auditors – Ocean State Chapter.

Richard Hall has been promoted to vice president and data services. His responsibilities include managing the credit union’s core processing platform and all electronic channels Richard Hall including online and mobile banking, and ATMs. Hall has been with the credit union for over 13 years and previously served as assistant vice president and data services. He is also the founder and past president of the Ocean State BMW Mini Club.

Service Credit Union Promotes Foret and L’Italien Gordon Simmons, president and CEO, Service Credit Union, Portsmouth, NH, announced the recent promotions of Ana Foret as chief risk officer, a newly created position at the Ana Foret credit union, and Shari L’Italien as chief internal audit.

Foret previously served as the credit union’s chief internal audit for the past 10 years, managing a staff Shari L’Italien of five. Prior to coming to the credit union, she was employed by McGladrey & Pullen, LLP where she conducted internal audits for credit unions.

As the credit union’s CRO, Foret will identify, manage, assess and monitor risk enterprise-wide to ensure strategic initiatives are accomplished. Foret will also be in charge of information security to assure that the highest-level security pertaining to member data is maintained. She will oversee the company’s business resumption plan, vendor due diligence and project management risk.

“Managing risk is one of our core capabilities as a financial institution, to enable us to meet the needs of our members while maintaining the safest and securest environment,” said Simmons. “Foret’s extensive knowledge in creating, implementing, and leading global risk management will be integral to our operations at Service Credit Union.”

She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of New Hampshire and is a certified public accountant in New Hampshire.

L’Italien previously served as the credit union’s audit manager since 2005 and the Page 1 department’s assistant manager from audit

1999 to 2005. A longtime resident of the Seacoast area, L’Italien has worked for Service Credit Union for 34 years in various positions.

In her new role as CIA, she will manage a department of six. Her primary responsibilities will include planning and conducting financial and operational audits to determine compliance with credit union policies and procedures, state and federal laws and contractual requirements, reviewing all audit assignments and documenting performance of certain credit union functions. Her department’s primary mission is to ensure the safety and security of our members’ financial information.

“L’Italien has served as our manager of internal audit with distinction,” said Simmons.

“Her leadership and guidance has greatly benefited Service Credit Union. Her many years of hard work and extensive knowledge will play a key role in maintaining and improving the already high level of auditing at the credit union.
