ew Hampshire homeowners missed out on $15.2 million in property value gains thanks to climate change, according to a new study. Sea level rise, driven by climate change and other factors, has cost New England states $403.1 million in property values between 2005 and 2017, according to a new study from the First Street Foundation. Flooding has gone up by 200 to 400 percent nationally in the last 20 years according the report, with over 1.7 million properties in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island at risk of “frequent tidal flooding” as the melting polar ice caps and other changes raise average sea levels. “Each time we analyze a new state we see the same phenomenon,” Jeremy Porter, a Columbia professor who helped lead the project, said in a statement. “Increased tidal flooding leads to a loss in home value appreciation. As sea level rise accelerates, we expect the corresponding loss in relative home value to accelerate as well.” While most of the affected homes did appreciate over the studied period, they did so at a significantly lower rate than comparable homes unaffected by tidal flooding. The research also found that in addition to direct property lot flooding, nearby road flooding

and the effects of the Great Recession. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Weather Service, the U.S. Geologic Survey and the Army Corps of Engineers was used to model flood risk in many coastal states.

Local Impact Focused on Few Places Much of the $15.2 million cost McAlpine and Porter say New Hampshire bears is focused on one community: Hampton Beach. According to the First Street report, homes there have missed out on $7.9 million in value increases because of increased coastal flooding. The second most heavily hit communities pale in comparison: Hampton has

also has a major impact on home value. “Road flooding affects commutes and school bus access, and because it’s on display for everyone to see, it can give an area a negative reputation. In New England, winter flooding can create sheets of ice on roadways, adding another, dangerous, consequence to street flooding,” First Street’s head of data science Steve McAlpine said in a statement. Researchers from First Street and data scientists from Columbia University based their peer-reviewed conclusions on 2.5 million coastal properties in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The research considered the many factors influencing a home’s price, including amenities
