Bolton by Paul Lloyd
Bolton is a family of 16 faces in the style of early last century. It is suitable for retro vintage themes, especially in designing vintage labels and mastheads. For this issue’s vintage section, we used Bolton Tilting Shadowed. We love the effect! This title font is suitable for use with sans serif reading text.

This is one of the things we exist to do – share ideas that will resonate with Asians. Most of us didn’t grow up in barns and farms, so to us, the rustic look is beautiful, but not necessarily something we can connect with. Instead, we grew up with coffee shops and stores like this. This is a theme that will certainly be much talked-about because it brings back fond memories, and reminds us how far we’ve come from when we were little kids. We love the shades of blue that the very talented Jackie of coochicoo used to tie the whole theme together, as well as the candies with their customised vintage labels, the crates of Coke, and our childhood favourite, ‘kacang’ served in paper cones. You’ve got to love the vintage blinds and biscuit tins used to set up the photobooth as well. We could go on and on, but you should just check out our website for more photos.

THE RECEPTION Nestled in Singapore Botanic Gardens, Food For Thought was the perfect venue for the laidback couple and their 150 guests, not only because of their wholesome food, but also their gorgeous expanse of natural light and space. To make the reception more memorable and fun, the couple participated in wedding party games and sang along with the band. “Forget about fairytales, a wedding is a celebration of love and friendship; everything else is cosmetic. If you’re pining for the perfect solitaire and the wind in your hair, you’re setting yourself up for stress and disappointment. At the end of the day, we were just overjoyed that our guests enjoyed themselves.”

THE CEREMONY Now how about this? A couple getting married on their 10-year anniversary. Over 280 guests gathered at Chapel on the Hill for this beautiful ceremony. Even though they look very playful, the whole ceremony was actually really emotional. The bride tried to hold her emotions together as she walked toward her groom, who was waiting for her at the altar. It was hard to believe that this day was really coming to pass – her finally walking down the aisle in her pretty white gown. Seeing each of her loved ones, friends and her grandparents. Reciting those sweet, sincere wedding vows.

Back to Basics
There’s beauty in simplicity, and we like how chic the stationery and little details are. The
groom definitely got it right with his grey suit. “We wanted a theme that was not too over the top and décor heavy, so we chose polka dots and stripes since it is simple, yet very cute and easy to match. As it was summer, salmon pink, seafoam green and mint seemed suitable. “Prepare a lookbook of how you envision your wedding and reception to be. It helps you put everything together and match your ideas.”

THE RECEPTION The couple agreed that they did not want an indoor reception. They were inspired by how simple, comfortable and fun backyard receptions look. So they went for exactly that.

THE CEREMONY Against the dramatic background of the Old Newport Rail Workshops, with a red carpet running the length of the aisle and a backdrop of plush red velvet curtains, the hilarious Jon Von Goes officiated the wedding of Kirstyn and Adam. “Although we didn’t write our own vows, we chose them very carefully and they felt really personal… we spoke softly so only we could hear… that was all that mattered.” The heart-warming ceremony witnessed by 150 guests concluded with lots of hugs, kisses, confetti and champagne, which set a tone of fun, love and celebration for the entire wedding.
“There was so much love throughout the whole day, people kept saying they could feel the love. Adam and I were obviously loved-up, but so were our guests.”

Old-fashioned delights Details like the ring toss, a kissing booth,
kewpie dolls, popcorn, fairy floss and a roaming magician added to the fun atmosphere of a carnival. “The whole wedding was vintage carnivalinspired. We chose the 1930s and 1940s in particular so that there was a distinct era. All of the details throughout the whole day made our day special and enhanced the experience for our guests; we had so many people comment that everything about the day was so typically us, which is what it's about at the end of the day – us.”

“Adam and I both love theatre – I love the performance side and Adam loves the actual spaces. So we wanted the ceremony to have a dramatic feel about it. We had a red carpet running up the aisle and a backdrop of red velvet curtains. Then we had a huge ceiling installation that had large balls of flowers, wire balls, moss balls and pendant lights.”
CARNIVAL THEMED “There were lots of different DIY elements. Adam and I love things with an earthy, rustic, organic feeling so we tried to have that throughout. The Dresses
Romantic Neutrals
“I wanted the gowns to be flowy and easy to move in to maintain the bohemian vibe.” Designing the dresses herself and opting for colours like peach, melon, beige and cream, Mildred wanted different designs for each bridesmaid so they could still use the gowns after the wedding. As for the bridal gown designed by Jerrick Macasocol, it was made of lace and was actually a two-piece dress with a removable lower gown that can be removed to reveal a short knee-length lace dress. “I asked the designer to design my gown that way so I can still use the knee-length dress after the wedding.”

Definitely not your regular bridal portraits, these cost an estimated USD20,000, and much planning had to be done in advance to ensure that they achieved the results they wanted. Needless to say, the journey there wasn’t easy, and neither were the weather conditions. This pursuit of the Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, was made possible by ChuianFeng of Avior Pictures and a team adventurous enough to move out of their comfort zone, not to mention a couple crazy enough to attempt it.
Discover the journey See what happened behind the scenes and the challenges they faced
CHARTING 23 March 2012 THE JOURNEY
THE CHALLENGE The unpredictability of the Northern Lights On their first night, they got to catch the Northern Lights, but only for a short period. The next two nights were disappointing, as the Northern Lights could not be seen. However, on the fourth night, the Northern Lights danced all night long. Facts: The season starts around end September to early October, with the best time to catch the Lights being January to March. The phenomenon occurs between 6pm and 2am, and is usually brightest between 10pm and 11pm.
Below zero degree weather and strong winds The sub-zero temperatures and strong winds were a challenge for the photographer, ChuianFeng, as well as the couple, Jacqueline and Jianyong. They had to dress really warm, including padded jacket and trousers, gloves, snow boots and a warm cap. Facts: Porjus has a subarctic climate, with winters lasting from October to April. Temperatures hover between 0˚C and -15˚C, and may even drop to -30°C. www.theweddingnotebook.com

M
ichelle and Joston had a yellow and grey theme for their wedding, and wanted to include those colours in their bridal portraits too. The couple love the outdoors and hikes, so they traveled to the nearest peak and did a little “hike”. Funky Dali feeds us the technical details:
How did you convince the client to do this old-style photoshoot? It was a work-together process because Joston and Michelle were also looking for something unique rather than the usual, conventional bridal portraits. Most of the time, we work with the couple in creating a picture so after a few rounds of discussion and pre-planning, we just went out to have fun. Was it shot on film or was the effect achieved during post-production? This whole series was shot digitally, and post-processed using multiple software programmes. They also mentioned something about a rustic theme for their wedding day and we wanted something similar too – hence the look and feel. The weather wasn’t really on our side during the shoot and we had to work around it. The ideas for some of the pictures that we really liked just came to us on the day, especially the one with the yellow umbrella, because we were trying to counter the bad weather. Thankfully, the couple’s commitment and excitement made everything easier and great! We love the expressions, and even with acrophobia, they challenged themselves and climbed up to an 18ft. tall silo for that shot! How did the client like the results of the shoot? They were really happy with the results and here’s what Michelle and Joston wrote to us: ‘Awesome! The photos turned out very natural and beyond our expectations. We were very impressed with the outcome. It had the rustic style and candid moments of both of us, just the way we wanted it to be. Our family and guests liked it very much too!’

the photographer Brian’s maiden trip to Nagano, and the results look nothing less than impressive. How did you convince the client to do this old-style photoshoot? Old-style is my signature style and most couples come to me precisely for that reason. Was it shot on film or was the effect achieved during post-production? It was mostly on film. The black and white shots are completely on analogue silver halide black and white film, the Kodak TRI-X to be exact. The colour shots on film were taken with the Kodak Portra 400. There was some colour grading done but mostly what you see is pretty much the original colour and contrast of the film.

How did you convince the client to do this old-style photoshoot? The client saw our portfolio on our website, which showed our trademark style but was mostly of weddings. This is our first attempt at shooting bridal portraits, and we are more than happy with the results. Was it shot on film or was the effect achieved during postproduction? We shoot using DSLR but we’ve always loved the film effect. Before the photoshoot, we discussed with our clients the scene and the right time to get good lighting. How did you prep for the shoot? We talked about props to complete the vintage style, and things that are related to their lifestyle and personality. Unfortunately, it was hazy during the session but the haze was a blessing in disguise as it helped us to get the look and feel we wanted. During the shoot, we told our clients to be themselves, as we wanted them to feel like it was easy and comfortable. In the end, with a bit of colour editing and retouching, everything turned out perfect!
