eather Lai wanted to challenge herself by doing an industrial rustic styled shoot – and we love the results! “As a photographer, I want to be creative and not become lazy and content with staying in my

comfort zone. We were very lucky to get our dream team together in just a week. The most difficult part was the location – I did some moodboards and did some research on style, but this kind of location isn’t easily found in Hong Kong. We did some scouting, and when we found this place, we knew this was it.”

The CEREMONY The backyard of the venue, with its lush greens, was the perfect spot for an intimate garden ceremony. The bride looked gorgeous in her off-shoulder dress and hairdo, while the mismatched bridesmaids’ and flowergirl dresses were just stunning.

“The most memorable moments were having Jason’s father conduct the ceremony, Jason walking down the aisle with our son Jett, jazz singer Tommy Francis making a surprise appearance after the ceremony, and having our friends and family from all over the world come together.”

The rustic theme was evident even on the wedding cake. The wood carvinglike initials gave the naked cake added personality, and can we just say that naked cakes are one of the best wedding inventions to date because who really eats all that extra icing anyway?

As for the rest of dessert, you’d be hard pressed to find a guest that complains about such a spread. Bite-sized treats and desserts in jars are perfect for mingling guests, and all that sugar is just what you need to fuel your after party!

The RECEPTION Jason: “We chose The White Rabbit because it had a pretty outdoor lawn and an old world feel indoor that we thought was different to other venues and very beautiful.”

This restaurant that was converted from a beautiful chapel has got to be one of our favourite venues. The stained glass and wooden chairs went beautifully with the mixed blooms and lovely stationery, and the added drapes for a backdrop looked great and drew attention to the main table. The table numbers were a great and unusual way of sharing the bridal couple’s childhood photos, and with so much thought and detail put into the celebration, we’re sure the 80 guests had a wonderful evening.

an abundance of green Jacqueline and Alwyn opted for a rustic yet luxe theme with an abundance of greenery, gorgeous centrepieces of flowers and hints of golden decorations, all of which created a soft, warm and earthy feel in the restaurant. “We wanted to bring Melbourne to our wedding in Malaysia. Melbourne has an abundance of greenery that would make the perfect wedding backdrop. Malaysia has some really beautiful outdoor wedding venues but none of them were suitable, as I do not cope well with heat. Therefore we arrived at the idea of bringing the outdoors indoor.�

The CEREMONY The couple chose Pietro Ristorante Italiano for its high ceilings, double height windows, gorgeous curved staircase and friendly yet sophisticated ambience. Serving authentic Italian dishes, it was the perfect intimate space for them and their guests. They were able to hold both their ceremony and reception in the same venue, but in different sections of the restaurant. First, for their ceremony, they exchanged vows in front of their guests by the curved staircase that was transformed into a green paradise with trailing greens and lush white blooms.

The RECEPTION Wanting a very intimate reception with just close family and friends, the bridal couple invited just 80 guests. To create a memorable and cosy reception, they had beautiful floral centrepieces that consisted mostly of white flowers and green foliage in glass vases. Then there were little bursts of gold, including gold chiavari chairs, gold striped paper straws and gold candlesticks, to tie it back to their theme.

The effect was indeed stunning, especially with the flickering candlelight reflecting off the glassware.

letterpress love The artisan craft of letterpress is the oldest form of printing, with roots that go all the way back to the 15th century. It’s made a huge comeback of late, due to its exquisite and bespoke feel that cannot be replicated by normal printing. Inspired by their theme, Jean and Ken’s letterpress invitations were made to look like a blue and white willow patterned china plate.

“We selected letterpress printing as we simply love the touch and feel of it, and I felt it added an understated elegance. In fact, quite a bit of effort went into the invitations! I just felt that they really represented us and our sincerity in wanting our invited guests to be part of our big day.”

The CEREMONY Held in the garden of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, the ceremony was a small and intimate affair, with white as the main colour and light splashes of pastel spring colours to complement the beautiful garden and ocean view setting. There was a wooden gazebo decorated with fluttery white drapes and bouquets dripping with flowers and greens – the perfect backdrop for the couple to exchange their vows and rings.

“Penang was chosen as that was where I grew up,” said Jean. “Having been away from Penang for so long, I wanted to have these special moments near home, close to my family, friends and relatives.”

precious porcelain Porcelain was first produced in China around the 7th century and is an ancient invention that continues to prove its beauty, versatility and uniqueness. The artwork on porcelain is often exotic and exquisite, with bright and beautiful colours. They are elegant, durable and useful, and it’s no wonder that Jean and Ken chose blue and white porcelain as one of the main elements in their reception.

“We wanted a white and blue porcelain theme for our décor because there’s something about it that just shouts East meets West, it’s oriental without being too ‘in your face’ like red is, and it’s a vintage element that’s chic and elegant.”

The RECEPTION The wedding reception, which was held in the Eastern & Oriental ballroom, was a lovely blend of East meets West. For lunch, the 150 guests were served a western set course luncheon, while the theme and decorations for the ballroom featured gorgeous blue and white accents on everything, from the porcelain vases and plates to the tablecloths and the delightful floral centrepieces that were arranged in varying heights.

Danielle: “Our wedding was very much a DIY wedding. When we first started thinking about our theme, we wanted a vintage look.

However, as the planning progressed, we started to incorporate a rustic bohemian style instead. We wanted the day to be laidback and fun.

“Flowers were our biggest element, and we used them as much as possible throughout the day. We went for deep pinks, burgundies and coral tones, which worked alongside our very green scenery. We also had splashes of gold that we incorporated into the candle holders, flower jars, table numbers and bridesmaids’ accessories.”

The CEREMONY Fonty’s Pool, the swimming pool from which the park takes its name, is a famous local landmark. “The venue was like an open rustic room that was a blank canvas. The owners were extremely accommodating and allowed us to bring in walnut coloured furniture, festoon lighting and rustic linen. It had a great outdoor area for our Catholic ceremony and also a lovely space for people to mingle, drink Pimm’s and play lawn games afterwards.

“Walking down the aisle with my dad was a very memorable moment. I knew how happy and proud my dad was to be able to walk me down the aisle. Seeing Dave waiting for me at the end just made me feel at ease.”

The RECEPTION The coral floral tablescape was effortlessly gorgeous, especially when paired with the matching bridal bouquet and naked cake.

The bridal couple had so much fun with their guests, but it was the little things that stuck out and made the day even more memorable.

“There were lots of memorable moments and each moment was so special. My mum wrote me some tips that were from the heart and that helped us bond before my wedding day. It’s something I will always treasure,” said Danielle.

“Getting ready with my bridesmaids and being with them was another special moment. They all mean so much to me and I am lucky they wanted to share our day with us.”

CONCEPT

his couple both work in the wedding industry, which explains why they wanted something different from what they see every day. We spoke to photographer Emz Nocedo to delve

deeper into this intriguing set of bridal portraits.

Who came up with the concept for the shoot? The make-up artist and I came up with the concept based on the couple’s request to look different and incorporate different eras.

What inspired the shoot? We were inspired by the movie The Time Traveler’s Wife, but in this case Marj was the one who was time travelling. It was the best way for us to incorporate all the different eras while still maintaining a cohesive story.

How long was the entire planning process? Because the couple both work in the wedding industry, it was easy for us to access different locations at any given time. I had the list of ideas in my head so we just decided which photo to create when we were at a location. It took us about two months altogether from the initial meeting, although it could’ve been a month earlier had the weather been more cooperative.

How long did it take to shoot the entire set of photos? It took us four days total to shoot, with three concepts each day. We had to be conscious about the time, as I was shooting alongside the videographers. From make-up to location to props, each photo took roughly 3-4 hours each, but the crucial part was editing each piece. Each photo took 3-6 hours to edit, and there were a lot of photos. It was a lot of work, but looking back, it was definitely all worth it.

What are your other interests besides photography? I have quite a few interests outside of photography. In my limited free time, I enjoy people watching, movies or even documentaries on Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Sometimes I cook, and I also enjoy cycling as it provides me with space to refocus on my life and my goals. I love travelling too, especially taking long road trips. I think long drives are somewhat similar to cycling; they’re quite therapeutic to me.

Other than those mentioned, I like to play with knives, lights (lasers) and guns, pretty typical boys’ toys.

How do you churn out ideas for conceptual shoots? Our conceptualised pre-wedding

How long does it take to plan an entire conceptual shoot?

Depending on how elaborate the shoot is, we always recommend a minimum of 5 to 6 months for each shoot. Currently we’re taking in 10 couples a year, but from next year onwards we’ll only be taking in 5 couples. It’s extremely fun, no doubt, but we’re getting more and more critical of the work we produce, hence we’re spending more and more time on each shoot. We need to reduce the number of clients so we can focus on giving our very best to each couple.
