Tēnā koutou
Here we are a month into Autumn and still enjoying great weather, long may it continue. This month I wanted to focus on the benefits of giving back to the community and recognise some of our key volunteers. You will see further on in The Woodpecker we had the first of two Deliverers meetings which was well attended and hugely beneficial to hear directly from them more of what they do, great tips and hear the wonderful feedback of what they really enjoy.
Giving back to the community is why we volunteer, it not only makes us feel good but it helps others at the same time.
The deliverers have indicated they don’t want to be individually recognised so I wanted to acknowledge and recognise them as a team. I have been blown away by their commitment and loyalty! We’ve had deliverers delivering for so long, even they can’t remember exactly when they started or how! But each month they go out directly after The Woodpeckers are delivered to them, no matter what the
weather to you!
It’s a sign of great teamwork and joint effort. Deliverers go above and beyond, and really enjoy what they do. They have some great stories to tell which highlighted their reward of giving back to the community and paying it forward.
If you are interested in joining our team, we are always on the look out for ADULT deliverers and a back-up distributer, so if you are keen please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.
On another note, we always welcome new advertisers. It’s a great medium of promoting your business or community group. We now print and deliver to 3,600 households!
If you’re interested in advertising please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Or if you want to promote your community club or group, we’d love to hear from you.

Let’s Talk about the Draft Annual Plan 2023/24
We’re seeking your feedback on several topics in this year’s Draft Annual Plan. These focus on continuing to deliver high levels of infrastructure, community facilities as well as protecting our natural environment.
Specifically the Council is asking for feedback on:
• Investment needed to meet new water standards
• Stormwater upgrades needed to respond to extreme weather events
• Inflation fuelling higher roading costs.
Have your say before Monday 17 April 2023

Mayor Dan Gordon Update
I have had a great time over the past few weeks attending some outstanding events in our District. One of those was the grand reopening of the Woodend Methodist Church and Community Facility. I was delighted to attend this opening and to be asked to speak. There has been strengthening work carried out and extensions to the rear of the building which now connects the hall and amenities to the church. It looks great.
The church was first opened in 1911 by Mr GH Blackwell who was of course the founder of Blackwell’s Department Store in Kaiapoi more than 150 years ago, and a great supporter of the church.
As a result of the newly-completed renovations the history of the church has been preserved and its future has been assured – it really is a credit to all those involved.
I am continuing to engage with Waka Kotahi to ensure residents’ concerns over Woodend safety improvements remain to the fore. In particular, those conversations involve the need for a safe crossing over State Highway 1 at the Pegasus Town roundabout, with residents’ preferred option being an underpass. I will update you when there is more information or news to hand.
Council’s Annual Plan is now out for consultation. The Annual Plan is Council’s budget for the financial year 2023 / 24 and is produced in the years between the Long-Term Plan. Due to the current cost of living crisis
and difficult economic environment, we have only put forward proposals needed to meet legislative or current levels of service. Our aim is to make prudent, future-focused decisions while maintaining the high level of service our residents expect from us. There are some key challenges we face in this Annual Plan including potentially bringing forward planned upgrades to our drinking water infrastructure and more regular testing of water to meet new regulations. We must make immediate improvements to the stormwater network following flooding from extreme weather events and we need to increase our roading budget to make sure local roads remain at a high standard.
We really want your feedback on the issues, so to have your say or for more information visit Waimakariri. govt.nz/letstalk.
Please share your thoughts with us before 17 April 2023.
I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that they may want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437. I’m here to help.

Dear Community Readers
Wow what a busy first term for 2023 at Woodend School.
It has been a full-on exciting time with students engaged with their learning interwoven with many new experiences
and activities. It has been wonderful to have a much more settled learning environment with the ability to more freely welcome parents back onsite, attend assemblies and help around the school again.
We have reviewed our student leadership opportunities / pathways that we have within the school. As a school we want to provide as
many opportunities as possible for our students in Years 5 - 8 to take on leadership roles that enhance our Woodend School culture.
Across these levels we have students involved
as Pou Manama (Lead Students), Student Leaders, Kapahaka Leaders, Whare Manu Leaders, Sports Leaders, Librarians, Road Patrol and Office Duty / Roll Helpers.
We are so grateful for so many of our students wishing to be involved in and around the school.
Some of our senior students were able to attend the Blue Light Challenge
Page 6 The Woodpecker April 2023
recently. This day involved many teamwork challenges including a police obstacle and a radar running course. They also participated in a CPR course. This was an amazing experience, and we hope that we get the opportunity to be involved in this again.
Recently 11 of our senior students attended the PAL’s Leadership course at Main Power Stadium. This course (Physical Activity Leaders) teaches students how to be leaders and teach activities and grow confidence. We appreciate our parent community, the staff and our students and wish all a happy Easter and restful holiday break.

St Barnabas Church Update
It has been a busy month in the life of our church. Although the first exciting event actually took place at the Transitional Cathedral, it had a very St Barnabas flavour, with many of our parishioners taking active roles in the service. Service and celebration, as the now Reverend Stephen Dunne was ordained as a Deacon of the church.
Another exciting change has been the introduction of our 11am service, ‘Generations’. Developing from, and replacing, the 4.32 service, ‘Generations’ has a somewhat different format than the 4.32 had. However it remains open to all ages, whilst being principally aimed at families with children and an emphasis on child participation. It will be followed each week by a light lunch.
On 19 March, we were delighted to welcome musician Grant Norsworthy and the World Vision team to our
church. As well as being a superb musician, Grant was an enthusiastic and inspirational speaker for parishioners from both the 9.30am and 11pm services. We had a full church too for his evening concert!
In addition to these events, we had a baby shower and a ladies’ breakfast (not at the same time!), began the countdown to the season of Lent, and still ran our normal monthly and weekly activities!
And we will be busy again in April, when we celebrate Easter, the most important event of the Christian year. We would love for you to come celebrate with us; so don’t hesitate if you would like to come along, 9.30pm or 11am, the welcome will be the same.
In the meantime, do enjoy the sun, welcome the rain and wrap up against the cold. And a Happy Easter to you all!

On Wednesday 8 March 2023, the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade held an Employer Recognition Night at the Fire Station to say thank you to Employers who allow their Staff / our Members to attend Fire Calls at all hours of the day / night. We also invited local Businesses and Community Groups who have supported us by various means. The night was a chance for those people to see our Station, meet the Members, and get a better understanding of what we do.
Thankyou Certificates were presented as well as a personal thank you to the Employers and local Businesses who attended.
The Employer Recognition Programme was developed by the Minister of Internal Affairs – at the time, Tracey Martin, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand who wanted to recognise the wider groups who make volunteering possible. Employers are essential to ensuring we keep our communities
safe.
We have a list of employers on our truck and signage at the front of the Station for all to view. Insignia recognising employers was also given to the Employers which can be used digitally on Company Stationery or on their Premises. We also wanted to acknowledge the Woodend Business Community who contribute in other ways – i.e. food, donations, aid in various forms when required etc (like at our recent major Pegasus / Beach fire) and to say it is very much appreciated. Thank you once again to the Employers, Businesses and Community Groups who support us.
The Long and the Short of it – we have Members from all Walks of Life in our Brigade (see photos). One of the recipients of the appreciation certificates was Debs Taylor-Hayhurst, Editor of The Woodpecker. “It was a great community event and a wonderful opportunity to meet other groups who contribute to helping FENZ in Woodend.”

Continuing with a little on our local beaches.
At the northern end of the Waikuku domain a kiosk was built. This contained washing facilities for the campers as well as a large copper – on gala days and most Sunday’s hot water could be obtained there. One took along one’s teapot and for sixpence (5c) it would be filled with boiling water. Thermos flasks were not here yet and fire restrictions prevented the use of Thermettes.
Each summer the Woodend Plunket mothers would run a cake stall using this kiosk. Members and supporters would spend a frantic week baking. Hordes of cake hungry campers would gather waiting for the doors to open. Believe it or not, towards the end of this event some husbands had to be roped in for crowd control and peace keeping.
Woodend Beach by comparison was very much a late developer. Up till 1920 access to the beach was a mere track off the end of the road. A few baches were built along the present Ferry Road but other than that very little. The locals went down for a swim or fishing and the large pipi beds were popular.
My mother who was born on the Smith family farm on Jelfs road could vividly remember the trawling expeditions to the beach. A draught horse, Nugget, would be hooked up to a sled and the necessary gear loaded. This was usually a night do when the tide was right. The neighbours were involved –the adults walked with their hurricane lamps whilst the children were allowed
to ride.
On reaching the beach Nugget would be unhooked from the sled and his role was to tow the net on the deep end. By all accounts he got all excited about the job and ridden by grandad took a bit of getting out of the water.
In the early 1920s ‘working bees’ were organised by local Woodend residents to improve access to the beach. Using horse and drays with scoops a road was formed to the base of the sandhills. A shelter was built where the present shop is complete with the ‘regulatory’ copper and some ‘long drop’ toilets erected. These were later modernised to night soil collection. These improvements saw a steady rise in patronage to Woodend beach. During the late 30s Ralph Burnet built a small shop on Ferry Road. He was also appointed caretaker, a position he held for many years.
Ralph still had his Woodend farm. He would milk the cows, load up a horse and cart with cans and deliver the fresh product to the campers each morning.
I have some great photos of the camp children hitching a ride with him doing his rounds.
By 1950 the Midland bus company ran a morning and evening service to and fro to both beaches. This enabled Dad to travel to work after his statuary fortnight had finished while the family stayed on. There is even legendary tales of families arriving by bus complete with all camping gear.
Since early settlement both beaches have enjoyed some unwelcome
The Woodpecker April 2023 Page 23
entertainment in the form of fires. It would appear that very few of these conflagrations were accidental and there have been several prosecutions. A big fire during the 1930s saw embers blown a few hundred metres back towards Woodend setting alight a plantation where the Christian camp is today.
Another nuisance that caused evacuations were the floods, the most serious in 1953 when the Ashley broke its’ bank above the Rangiora bridge. The water ‘ponded’ up against the railway embankment and threatened to enter the town. It breached the bank although there is a hint it may have had little help. The escaping water formed three streams. One followed the bank down to the beach – a branch of this passing through present Pegasus. Another followed the Waiora stream into Woodend whilst the other stayed with the Cam.
As it was late January there were still a fair number of campers at Waikuku and Woodend. Both beaches were cut off from the outside world. The Ashley began scouring the bank and a couple of baches were swept out to sea. When the waters receded a little a track was opened to the sea and cars were able to drive down to Kairaki at low tide.
At Woodend the camping ground was completely inundated, and a large lake formed back to the present Christian camp. The campers and the Midland bus were moved to the ‘hill’ about where the caretaker is today. As it possessed a diesel engine the bus was the first to leave.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING THE SPCA
As we watched the recent reports of the devastaon caused by cyclone Gabrielle both Sam and I felt a strong desire to support the organisaons that come to the aid of New Zealanders in mes of need. The SPCA has been hard at work in affected areas rescuing displaced animals, providing transport, shelter and feed, and providing much needed support to animal owners in need.
In recognion of the hard work the SPCA is doing throughout NZ and to acknowledge the huge amount of support we have received from our fantasc clients as we have started our clinic, we have:
· Made an inial donaon of $2000 to the SPCA
· Commied to donang 3% of all consultaon fees each month as ongoing support

Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust
On the 4 March we celebrated our open day for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. We held our event in collaboration with Seaweek hosted by the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC). Seaweek highlights the importance of sustainable seas for future generations and the theme for this year was healthy seas – healthy people.
Even though the weather looked grey,
and rain was on the forecast, families gathered on the domain to enjoy the classic kiwi sausage sizzle while listening to Charlie Williams who set the atmosphere with some live music. Tamariki enjoyed jumping on the under the sea themed bouncy castle and having their faces painted with different sea creatures.

Fire Emergency NZ (FENZ), Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group, Styx Living Laboratory Trust, and Waimakariri District Council joined us with their own interactive educational stalls. FENZ brought along different native tree species and highlighted the importance of planting natives and their higher level of fire resistance compared to introduced species. This was extremely relevant considering the
Page 34 The Woodpecker April 2023
wildfire that happened at the park last year.
Other educational stalls included information on trapping and pests, native wildlife, conservation and river projects. Our stall included a display with kōwaro caught from one of our biota nodes and information about our biota node project. (Photo above)
Other activities included planting native trees, and a guided walk through the transect to learn about the unique history of Tūtaepatu Lagoon and the surrounding area. It was a fantastic day to unite and celebrate nature, our community and conservation. We would like to say a big thank you to the organisations who
day. We were happy to see hundreds of plants going in the ground. Next time you are out walking, running, or biking the trails keep a lookout for these diverse assemblages of native trees which can be found along the track at Pines Beach wetland.

Over the last few months there has been some development with the projects the committee has been working on, and we would like to share the progress with you.
Woodend Kaiapoi Cycleway
A very big congratulations needs to be announced as Doug, one of our very dedicated committee members and other community advocates have worked very hard to progress the Woodend to Kaiapoi cycle way to Priority 1. This means we will have a safe route to cycle to Kaiapoi a lot sooner than the council had first suggested. Thank you so much.
Woodend Community Garden
The Woodend community garden has had a very successful first growing season and has bedded its roots in to continue providing vegetables for the community pantry and a few families in need.
Andy Child, vice president of the WCA is the driving force behind the community gardens and is looking for any spare equipment or plants that you may have on your property. Also if you can spare any time to help, Andy and his team will be very appreciative. Andy can be contacted on 027 512 2681.
Woodend Community Pantry
With the community becoming more aware of the pantry (which is situated in the WASP carpark,) the giving and
receiving of goods has been amazing as has greatly benefitted many families in Woodend.
If you have extra food you would like to donate, the pantry is designed for fruit and veg, baked goods and tinned goods.
Member introduction
This month I would like to introduce you to a new member of the Woodend Community Association, Andrew Retallick. Andrew began his school years at Woodend School and has just returned with his family from many years away as the new principal for Woodend School. Thank you Andrew for joining us on the committee and giving us an insight into how the school is progressing and how we can support the school as a community.
Paying tribute
With great sadness we learnt of the passing of Dawn, who was hit by a car on the main road in Woodend this summer. Dawn was a past member of the WCA, who was very dedicated to helping
her community become a better place. In return for the hard work Dawn gave to Woodend, we will not stop pushing for our roads to become safer. To Dawn’s family and friends, we are really sorry for your loss.
Do you have any ideas or concerns?
If you have any concerns or suggestions

for the community and do not know where to start, contact the WCA via email at woodend.community. association@gmail.com or call Mark Paterson on 027 534 9112. Also, for a small fee of $10 per household and $50 per business each year you can be part of improving our community and help the WCA continue to deliver projects like the Jill Creamer trail, ANZAC memorial and seating, new staging at the Community Centre and more.
We are always looking for households and business memberships to help support our projects and to also offer suggestions on how we can allocate our funds.
You can find the membership forms at www.woodend.co.nz/join-households or www.woodend.co.nz/join-

Woodend - Sefton Community Board
Cycle/Walkways coming this way by June 2024
The best part of our March meeting was going over the proposed design for the two shared paths in this area as the Board has wanted these for so long.
• Woodend to Kaiapoi
• Woodend to Ravenswood (via Garlick Street)
It was good to see several people there who had come along to find out more. The Board, residents’ groups and locals pushed Council for the paths to be given top priority last year as part of the Walking and Cycling Network consultation. That feedback had really highlighted how strongly the community wanted these two paths to be built ASAP. And fingers crossed with just two more hurdles, being sign-off on the designs and a safety audit, things will happen quickly as the funding requires that the paths be built by June 2024.
These projects both received funding from “Transport Choices” and our thanks go to Council staff for the work they had done which meant when the opportunity arose for funding the applications were basically ready to go. There will be consultation coming up on these two shared paths and we hope that many of you will provide feedback. Keep an eye out for further information.
Funding Grant approved
The Board approved a grant of $500 toward the Relay for Life held on 1st April in Rangiora. This project was seen as a good cause with wide benefits as the funds raised through this event for the Cancer Society stay in North Canterbury.
Have Your Say on the Draft Annual Plan (this affects your rates)
Closes 17th April. More information at https://letstalk.waimakariri.govt.nz/. Council would like to hear from you about spending money on:
• testing water supplies more regularly and bringing forward planned upgrades to meet new regulations
• making immediate improvements to the stormwater network following flooding from extreme weather events
• the roading budget which is being severely affected by inflation and capped subsidies.
Our next meeting – all are welcome
Tuesday 11 April starting at 5.30pm at the Waikuku Beach Hall. If you want to see what will be discussed check out the Board Facebook page or the agenda at waimakariri.govt.nz/your-council/meetings/minutes-and-agendas around the Thursday of the previous week.

The Woodpecker Distributor & Deliverers Meeting - Pegasus
The Woodpecker Community Trust held their first of two Distributor and Deliverer sessions on 15 March where ten deliverers attended, along with Pegasus Distributor Jeff TaylorHayhurst, Ian Lennie, President, Treasurer and deliverer. Debs Taylor-Hayhurst (Editor) facilitated the session giving deliverers a great opportunity to share their feedback including what they love about the role, how long they’ve been doing it as well as providing some great insights to share with others.
Debs said “I felt the meeting went well and that it was a successful evening, as well as being a great way to show our thanks to those members of the team who, no matter what the weather deliver The Woodpeckers to our doors.
Jeff said “It was great to meet with our amazing ‘Woodpeckers’ and ‘Peckerettes’ as without all the hard work they do as volunteers we couldn’t deliver the amazing service to
community members”.
The second meeting will be held at the end of the month for the Woodend Distributor and deliverers. Helpful feedback relevant to our readers will be shared next month. It is hoped that this will ensure all deliverers are on the same page and have the ability to meet other deliverers.

Remember, this event is for all residents of the Woodend/Ravenswood, Pegasus and Waikuku area.
RONEL’S COMMUNITY CUPPA MARCH:
At the March community cuppa, we were delighted to welcome some first time attendees from the Woodend and Tuahiwi areas. Our two guest speakers covered very different subjects. Both were well recieved and generatred plenty of healthy discussion. Nish from Nationwide Health & Disability Advocacy Service left some flyers and other information at the community centre for anyone who is interested in knowing more, or contact us at Waiora Links and we can put you in touch with Nish. Nish also presented lucky draw winner, Jenny, with The Good Home Pegasus voucher.
Chris Brown from WDC talked about the new purpose-built community centre for Pegasus. Lots of questions were asked and answered. He also presented Hugh with his bonus lucky draw prize.

Alpine Society
Members enjoyed a very interesting talk from Kate Pearce from the Alpine Society at the last meeting. Some interesting points from the talk were:
Put dry blood (not blood & bone) on perennial bulbs but not acid loving plants
Use Seasol (an organic liquid seaweed fertilizer) for transplanting seedlings
Mushroom compost is available from the Just Dirt Trust 027 477 1350
The September Alpine Show is a great place to buy plants
March Club Outing
Shirley Rogers organised a wonderful outing to the Christchurch Botanical Gardens on 20 March. Members took the guided caterpillar tour and spent time appreciating the wonderful dahlia beds. Roses are still blooming, and the begonia display is quite impressive. A busy day with tourists in town from the

Volunteering for CAB
A heads-up that we’ll be advertising for volunteers towards the end of April / beginning of May. Training will commence in late May and continue throughout June. We’re looking for people who are good listeners, non-judgmental, willing to learn and keep learning, and confident using a computer.
We can promise an expansion of your knowledge, a great deal of satisfaction in helping and empowering a client, and a bunch of really nice people to work alongside.
If you’d like to apply, please get in touch with us for an application form.
All trainees are fully supported with initial and ongoing learning plus a mentoring programme as you come up to speed with the challenges and pleasures of being a CAB volunteer.
Our Clinics
We hold fortnightly clinics that cover legal assistance, employment, budgeting and immigration queries. The employment and budgeting clinics are drop-in however the legal assistance and immigration clinics are by appointment only. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace and they offer that service when
they’re on duty. Please get in touch for dates and more information about the clinics and JPs.
Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether that’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas / phone / power provider about a query on your bill, how to talk to your employer about an issue in the workplace, family relationships or noisy neighbours.
Our Service
Do come and see us. We trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab. org.nz - plus we’re on Facebook and Neighbourly. We’re open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

PEGASUUS COMM UNITY NEWS
COMMUNITY EMERGENCY HUBPEGASUS COMMUNITY CENTRE
With the devastating floods and cyclone in the North Island, the last few months have taught us the importance of a community coming together to support each other and drawing on our local resources in times of emergency.
Some of our PRGI Committee team and a Pegasus Community Centre volunteer undertook some Civil Defence training to begin the process for the centre to become a Community Emergency Hub There is some way to go, but this is something we are excited about offering our community in a time of crisis. We will keep you up to date as this progresses. In the meantime, for more information on what a hub is visit our website.
YOUTH INITIATIVES UPDATE
Youth initiatives remain a key focus of ours for 2023. We now have dedicated resources on our committee to work with Council, local entities, and Pegasus youth to explore future initiatives that may suit.
PRGI COMMUNITY WATCH
Our community patrol urgently needs volunteers! Many of our long-standing volunteers are retiring after years of dedicated service, and we need enthusiastic individuals to take up the mantle. We’ve already had to reduce the hours of this service and unless we get volunteers, we may have to rethink this

service altogether, which would be a loss to our community.
What it requires: Volunteering a few times a year patrolling the Pegasus community in a branded vehicle for a few hours on Friday and Saturday nights and at other random times.
About the role: The patrol does NOT do the job of the police. It’s purpose is to observe and report any suspicious or dangerous activity in the community. The role is non-confrontational. The safety of our volunteers is paramount and training is provided More information is on our website. If you or someone you know can help please email us.

Pegasus parkrun
If only there was a free weekly event on our doorstep that allowed walkers, joggers, and runners to do a timed 5K event…
Well – there is!
Pegasus parkrun is the only free, timed 5K event ion the Waimakariri District and has been running in Pegasus Town every Saturday morning since June 2016!
Over 22,000 finishes have happened since then, and it’s getting more popular!
It’s not a race, it’s fun and social! We have approximately 80 parkrunners at Pegasus each week.
You don’t have to interact with anyone if you don’t want to –but it’s a great place to meet like-minded people from all walks of life.
parkruns are free, noncompetitive,
social 5K events where you can walk, jog, or run at your own pace.
It’s for everyone - no matter your age, background, experience level, fitness level or gender.
parkrun is positive, welcoming, and inclusive, there is no time limit, and no one finishes last.
You don’t have to be fit, experienced or fast.
Everyone is welcome to come along. parkrun is free and you only need to register once whether walking, jogging, running, volunteering, or a
combination. Visit parkrun. co.nz to get a barcode which can be used at any of the 2,000 parkruns in 22 countries across six continents! We scan your

Winter Weight gain.
We are often told in Spring that the furry family member has just “put on a bit of winter condition, it will burn off in summer”.
Please remember...
- Once overweight your pets metabolism changes, making them less satisfied by the food they are given
- Dogs just 20% overweight live on average 2 years less
- Obesity increases the risk of diabetes
- Obese cats have twice the risk of cancer compared to lean cats
So how about an Autumn focus on weight control to avoid that gain! Feel free to contact us at the clinic to see how we can assist you, including teaching body condition scoring.
Take care
Nick and the team at PAWS
