Immersing guests in local culture and the rhythm of the seasons

- HOTEL FLORIEL -

Audrey Boisvert and Gabriel Wasilko proudly present Hotel Floriel, a refreshing new high-end hospitality destination nestled in the natural beauty of the Village of Sainte-Flore, Quebec, roughly halfway between Montreal and Quebec City.

Expanding upon the principles of ‘witness’ experiential lifestyle incubators, the upscale 7-room micro-hotel provides unique stays for guests in the pampered embrace of upscale brands and design concepts that are theirs for the taking.

More than a boutique hotel, Boisvert and Wasilko’s business model is grounded in partnerships formed with companies whose products adorn each of the hotel’s unique rooms and common spaces, curated as reflections of the region’s abundant forests and rivers.

- 4FEATURE FOCUS

Hotel Floriel is a living showroom of works of art, furniture, decorative accessories, artisanal products, and more of primarily local and regional manufacturers, retailers, artists, and craftsmen. From mattresses, lamps, and luxurious bathrobes, to linens, sinks, furniture, and more, Hotel Floriel’s curated amenities can be purchased by guests for their own homes through privileged relationships established between the hotel’s owners and the artisans and manufacturers.

“We set out to create a high-end boutique hotel with a twist,” explains Gabriel Wasilko, co-owner of Hotel Floriel, along with Audrey Boisvert. “It has been a creative outlet for us, and the twist begins with the uniquely curated designs of each of our seven rooms.”

Built within the gutted walls of a former Presbytery, the owners designed the spaces of Hotel Floriel. They immersed themselves in every aspect of the process, including tiling, framing, and building concrete floors. In the two years preceding the hotel’s opening, those all-encompassing tasks never allowed them to doubt themselves.

“I think we were naively confident, so we just approached the project one day at a time,” recalls Wasilko. “Each individual task required our full attention, so we just compartmentalized everything.”

Beyond construction, the business plan developed for Hotel Floriel was very instinctual. In a post-COVID world where city dwellers have increasingly moved to the countryside, the couple saw a market for their product developing within the region’s growing concentration of wealth.

“We realized that there was nothing to offer in the region in terms of upscale hotel experiences,” says Audrey Boisvert. “We saw that as an opportunity to introduce a product where luxury boutique services combine with the autonomy and ownership of an Airbnb experience to provide guests with the best of both worlds.”

Each room of Hotel Floriel has a unique theme based on design personality archetypes, with names including Heart in Bloom, Snowflake White, Legends and Fables, Wind in the Fields, Mist on the Lake, Hymn to Spring, and The Soul of the Forest.

Each room features a similar architectural footprint, but the colours, textures, furnishings, and textiles clearly distinguish them from one another, allowing the guests to experiment with a unique design story based on a specific colour palette and mood inspired by nature and the rhythm of the seasons.

“For example, we work with a manufacturer of an extensive line of high-end, handmade mattresses, and we have a different model installed in each of our rooms,” explains Boisvert. “Choosing the right mattress can be a difficult decision, and Hotel Floriel provides guests with a unique opportunity to spend an entire night or more on a specific mattress

FEATURE FOCUS

type before deciding if it’s something they want to purchase for home.”

The unique concept of Hotel Floriel extends to its warm and friendly ambiance, where Gabriel Wasilko and Audrey Boisvert operate the hotel themselves, insisting on a very human-scale offering. The duo leveraged mutual experience in the hospitality industry to develop their approach, including drawing upon Audrey’s studies in hotel management and training as a sommelier. The latter experience was applied to stocking a selection of exquisite wines for Hotel Floriel.

Strategically located between two main entrances to Mauricie National Park, Hotel Floriel is a gateway to one of the region’s natural treasures. Accordingly, it was important for Wasilko and Boisvert to build something that would complement other regional businesses. In embracing that notion, a decision was made not to include a restaurant in Hotel Floriel, and to instead refer guests to some of the many fine cuisine options in the community.

“Sainte-Flore is a beautiful village that doesn’t get enough attention,” says Wasilko, who grew up there and moved back after several years living in Ontario. “It’s a pearl in the heart of a beautiful region, with breathtaking surroundings of natural beauty in Mauricie National Park.”

Already severals months into operations, Hotel Floriel remains a perpetual work in progress as the creative couple continues to beautify and add to their pampered service offering. Part of that process includes a new initiative to provide guests with postcards detailing the colours, amenities, and design selection of their rooms so that they can relax, kick back, and only revisit the themes and design details after returning home.

“We want people to absorb the spaces and enjoy the pampered experience without any pressure to buy anything,” stresses Wasilko. “At the same time, we want it to be easy for them to recall the things that captured their imaginations, and we are slowly trying to build the How-Tos of that business model.”

- 6 -
FEATURE FOCUS

Hotel Floriel can accommodate full buyouts for corporate or private events, which is a segment the owners are focused on developing. In addition to the hotel’s guest rooms, its flexible common spaces, including a bar area with seating for up to 24 people, a lounge area, and a large outdoor patio space, can be configured to accommodate a variety of business and personal events.

The couple is also working on a new partnership that they hope will be the pièce de résistance of a luxurious wedding package at Hotel Floriel. With a church next door, and outdoor facilities capable of hosting catered events, they hope to offer a wedding package where newlyweds can take home the upscale cutlery, dinnerware, and glassware sets used on their memorable day.

“We want Hotel Floriel to continue to evolve as a brand,” explains Audrey Boisvert. “That process includes consolidating our growing portfolio of suppliers to develop a transactional e-commerce platform that will facilitate the concept for all stakeholders.”

A seductive boutique hotel in the capital of the Costa Brava

- EL EQUIPO CREATIVO -

El Equipo Creativo has completed the interior design of El Palau Fugit. Located deep in Girona’s atmospheric Barri Vell (Old Quarter), the awardwinning studio converted a disused 18th-century palace into a destination hotel as charming and seductive as Girona itself.

El Equipo Creativo used the ‘two Gironas’ as their creative starting point. The first is the Barri Vell; an emblematic district of weathered stone facades, hidden cul-de-sacs, porticoes, and stone ramparts. In contrast, the designers have highlighted the lighter side of the city - namely the vibrant colours that bathe the townhouses flanking the River Onyar, along with Girona’s most famous spring celebration - El Temps de Flors (The Time of Flowers). These influences, enhanced with striking modern art and crafted objects, create a hotel that begs to be discovered and enjoyed.

“We aimed to create a sense of high luxury minus the pretensions. We respected the original architecture, of course, but with fresh, elegant, surprising and, at times, a little disruptive elements.”

El Equipo Creativo

The building

Palau Fugit unfolds in two principal parts, both adapted to the needs of modern travellers and experience hunters by the Barcelona-based architecture studio Isern Associats. The first is the original palauet. Here, an arched courtyard, renamed ‘La Placeta’, holds the reception area, restaurant, and cocktail bar, as well as a tucked-away spa-for-one.

Guests ascend to rooms via the original staircase of the palace.

The second building, named the Pavelló, is an annexe that takes shape with a modern, rational approach. Both volumes are connected by a terrace, or the ‘heart’ of the hotel. Endowed with a small swimming pool, abundant ferns, and a poetic central sculpture (titled Font de Gararotes) by renowned local artist Frederic Amat, it provides a serene oasis for guests and a natural connection between the two edifices.

The rooms

For the rooms in El Palauet, El Equipo Creativo reimagined the sumptuous decor of the fin de siècle through a prism of contemporary design and art. The designers’ goal was to instill a ‘feminine’ presence throughout, recreating the warm and eclectic ambiance of a noble family nest. Careful attention to detail and the selection of materials and textures create a rich visual experience. This is further enhanced by a curation of paintings, sculptures, murals, and photographs - all of which are original works by local artists.

Although each room and suite presents a design story unto itself, gothic arches and porticoes, a dominant architectural motif of Girona’s Barri Vell, are a recurring influence and narrative.

Curvaceous chaise longues, bespoke rattan bed heads, and avant-garde lighting enfold the guest. Surfaces and textiles, from velvet drapes to strategically placed mirrors, invite the user to linger and relax in

FEATURE FOCUS

this historic setting. Anchoring each room is a custommade marble vanity unit, a monolithic interpretation of the tocador (dressing table) that exemplifies domestic life of the period.

The rooms in El Palauet brim in a palette of natural stone shades and soft blues, greys, and blush tones, creating an elegant mise en scène that is very contemporary and lends new life to original features such as ceiling roses and carved balcony shutters.

This mood changed in El Pavelló - an ode to ‘la dolce vita’ of the Mediterranean. A palette of terracotta, locally made ceramics, and wood give a mid-century chic feel to the rooms, each enhanced by natural light pouring in through direct patio access. Handmade terracotta breeze blocks and tiles create rippling shadows and textured surfaces, and rattan chairs and occasion tables evoke the local craft ateliers of the Costa Brava. With splashes of colour and handspun textiles, the overall feel is at once casually glamorous and effortlessly cool.

The public and social spaces

Casa Heras, the hotel’s restaurant, is inspired by the social and hospitality areas of the original palace and adapted to modern lifestyle and comfort. Like the rest of the hotel, modern art and objects elevate the spaces, as seen in the whimsical wall murals created by Joana Santamans, and bespoke ceramic pieces from the artisan Núria Gimbernat.

Sparkling copper pots and pans placed on an antique dresser fill the dining room, while high-quality tables, chairs, and fittings denote a timeless modern feel. Adjacent to this, El Salon provides a space for a cocktails and intimate conversation, surrounded by vestiges of the palau’s ancient walls. La Biblioteca (library) is a distinguished space conceived for private banquets and meetings around a beautiful oval marble table.

The designers intended La Placeta to be a little more disruptive, and the idea of re-introducing the palace

to the social life of the city was essential to the project. Cradled by stone arches and an original staircase, La Placeta presents a place to meet and chatter around zesty-coloured armchairs and tables that are full of personality.

Adjacent to La Placeta is the reception room, where guests check in at a bespoke Yves Klein blue reception table, overhung by a blossoming golden chandelier. This composition sets the tone for the rest of the hotel - a concept that balances history and modernity, formality and informality, and offers a unique and welcoming base while experiencing the rich history and culture of Girona.

A sustainable fibre system that would not have a cost to our planet

During one of my visits to our manufacturing plant in Georgia USA, it was brought to my attention just how much post-consumer carpets end up in landfill.

In the UK around 400,000 tons of carpeting goes to landfill with a further 130,000 tons being incinerated with this number going up to over 1.8 million tons in the USA.

I was horrified and realised that change needs to come from the top, all manufactures need to take action to reduce waste destined for landfill which is why our technical team spent two years in R&D developing our sustainable EcoSylk®

“EcoSylk® is an environmentally friendly and sustainable fiber which is created by separating the three main components, polypropylene, nylon & calcium.

The polypropylene is used in the automobile industry for injection molding the calcium goes to the building industry which is then used in concrete and plaster.

The part that we require is the nylon, the nylon pellets are cleaned and come back ready to be extruded into yarn that is as clean as virgin yarn resulting in a fibre indistinguishable from our awardwinning NuSilk™.

Our commitment to being an environmentally conscious brand that creates sustainable products is at the top of our priorities, and to carryout environmentally friendly practices is of the highest importance. We are proud to support interior designers in creating beautiful and sumptuous spaces that are not only suited to their clients’ needs but also minimise their impact on the environment.

“All of our products are now all made with EcoSylk; this is our commitment to the planet.”

The Red Carnation Hotel Collection unveils its crown jewel in Edinburgh

- RED CARNATION HOTELS -

Red Carnation Hotels, the family-owned hotel collection, proudly announces the opening of its latest masterpiece and first property in Scotland, 100 Princes Street. Heralding the start of a new era at its storied Edinburgh address, this boutique hotel is poised to become a beloved destination providing an exclusive, intimate and authentic Scottish experience. Inspired by the adventures of the Scottish explorers who frequented the building as the former headquarters of the Royal Overseas League, 100 Princes Street is an exquisitely curated property that promises a journey into Scotland’s rich cultural, historic and nautical legacy. The hotel’s enviable location, a stone’s throw from Scotland’s National Gallery and directly facing Edinburgh Castle, positions it as a unique vantage point for both discerning travellers and culture-seekers.

Evocative of a chic private members’ club and a celebration of all things Scottish, 100 Princes Street is led by distinguished Resident Manager Laura Jamieson. It features 30 beautifully appointed ensuite rooms and suites; ‘The Wallace’, a plush dining room, bar and lounge offering hearty, local fare and an expertly selected list of craft cocktails; and ‘Ghillie’s Pantry’, an elegant private dining room offering over one hundred whiskies and custom tasting menus. A collection of distinctive Scottish experiences, created exclusively for guests of the property, further enhance the “anything, anytime” ethos, for which Red Carnation is renowned.

Authentic design: where every detail tells a story

The soul of 100 Princes Street is captured through its inspired design and meticulous attention to detail,

a collaboration from the acclaimed team behind Botswana’s Xigera Safari Lodge and Ireland’s iconic Ashford Castle, with the superb vision of Toni Tollman at the forefront. Whilst the Tollman family has focused on protecting the architectural heritage of the building and lovingly restoring its original features, a wealth of twenty-first century luxuries have been added for its discerning guests, delivering every creature comfort.

Upon entering the hotel, guests are immediately invited on an artistic voyage, marked by a handselected array of artworks including bespoke pieces by the notable decorative arts specialists, Croxford and Saunders.

Among these, a breathtaking, hand-painted mural stands out, celebrating the daring spirit and ingenuity of Scottish explorers. This artistic marvel stretches the length of the majestic fivestory staircase and tells the story of the journeys of Scottish botanists, whose discoveries and contributions to the world of plants, trees, and flowers are depicted throughout, with each vignette representing a different location.

The style of the mural harkens back to the late Victorian to late Edwardian periods, reminiscent of vintage posters and postcards, giving the mural the feel of a historic book illustration from that era. Set against the backdrop of high-gloss handcarved woodwork, the masterpiece culminates at the top of the staircase with an impressive glass and bronze chandelier shaped like an adventurer’s hot air balloon.

- 18FEATURE FOCUS

FEATURE FOCUS

In the rooms, skilled local artisans were commissioned to create custom-made furnishings, fabrics and artworks that are totally unique to the hotel, including five tartans by revered Scottish designer Araminta Campbell. Handpicked antiques and nautical design elements have been cleverly woven throughout the property and come together to narrate the building’s illustrious history.

A private residents’ club with unobstructed views

100 Princes Street exudes the feeling of a private residents’ club, with its 30 rooms and suites each individually designed with exceptional attention to detail, and each a testament to the hotel’s rich heritage and its connections to historical figures. The two exceptional signature suites, named The Archibald and The Isobel after renowned Scottish explorers Archibald Menzies and Isobel Wylie Hutchison, offer guests breathtaking views of Edinburgh Castle, making them the city’s most coveted accommodations.

An exploration of scotland’s finest produce

Looking directly at Edinburgh Castle and helmed by the hotel’s talented South African chef, Willhelm Maree, the gastronomic heart of 100 Princes Street is undoubtedly The Wallace. A plush dining room, bar, lounge and tasting room, where guests feast on

delicious, hearty fare, prepared using the best and most freshly available local produce. Hotel guests are invited to indulge in rare Scottish whisky tastings, refined afternoon teas and a menu that pays tribute to the richness of Scotland’s local produce.

Adjoining The Wallace, Ghillie’s Pantry is an elegant private dining room, seating up to 12 guests, where discerning gourmands can enjoy custom tasting menus. Intimate and stylish, the walls of the room are lined with more than one hundred whiskies, including many rare bottles such as the Laphroaig 20-Year-Old Director’s Special, and The Glenlivet 25 Years Single Malt. Ghillie’s Pantry is crowned by a stunning astrological ceiling mural by Croxford and Saunders.

A distinctive collection of bespoke scottish experiences

Exclusively for its guests, 100 Princes Street presents a collection of experiences designed to showcase the beauty of Edinburgh and the idyllic Scottish countryside. These tailored adventures range from creating a personalised Scottish gin to serene fishing excursions on the River Tweed, ensuring an unforgettable stay for every refined traveller.

Nightly rates at 100 Princes Street start at GBP £450 (approx. USD $565) for an entry-level ensuite double room, including a sumptuous Scottish breakfast for two.

- 24INTERIORS

Engineered for Excellence, Crafted for Comfort

At the heart of the collection lies the awardwinning Hybrid® technology, a hallmark of Simba’s innovation - meaning guests can enjoy the Simba sleep experience; uninterrupted slumber, awakening refreshed and rejuvenated.

Simba’s exclusive technology means that their Hybrid® mattresses are comfortable for everyone, whatever their shape or how they sleep. Key to this are Simba’s incredible upper comfort layers and supportive base layers.

The upper layers feature thousands of Simba’s patented titanium alloy Aerocoil® springs; these patented, pocketed springs flex and compress individually to absorb impact as people move and in response to pressure - giving a hugged, floating sensation to suit most sizes or sleeping styles.

Simba’s Aerocoil® springs also provide localised support and weight distribution so the movements of a partner are absorbed more easily and not passed onto the other side of the bed.

Meanwhile, the base layers play a vital role in maintaining proper body alignment, offering gentler support and additional cushioning for the shoulders and lower back.

In the Pro and Luxe models the Aerocoil® springs are combined with cooling graphite-infused Simbatex® foam, which has been engineered for pitch-perfect temperature control and is infused with natural graphite that works to draw excess heat away from the body. Whilst the Green Label uses a more sustainable, graphite-infused natural latex layer in place of the Simbatex®

The result is a range of mattresses that dynamically adjust to the sleeper’s body, offering personalised support, temperature regulation, and pressure relief, all while minimising motion transfer.

Every Simba Contract mattress adheres rigorously to CRIB 5 fire regulations, ensuring both comfort and safety. The UK Fire Regulations Act of 1988 has been surpassed, allowing both hoteliers and guests to rest assured in Simba’s commitment to their well-being.

Sustainability as a Guiding Principle

In 2023, Simba became the first UK sleep brand to secure global B Corporation™ status, marking a significant step toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero status by 2030.

A restaurant where you can hear and be heard

- ROCKFON -

Complaints about poor restaurant acoustics is a growing trend with customers voicing their opinions on TripAdvisor, Yelp or other review sites. Research from Zagat found that noise was the 2nd most common customer complaint in restaurants. Meanwhile, data from Soundprint, an app that allows users to measure the loudness of venues, found that in over half of the restaurants tested, noise levels were above 76 decibels – around the same noise as a lawnmower.

What these restaurants lack is effective acoustic absorption. Double tablecloths and thick curtains will help, which is great if it suits the style of the restaurant. If not, the walls and ceiling (even if you have an exposed soffit for an industrial vibe) offer the most surface area to help reduce excessive noise.

Navigating through the vast array of acoustic products available for walls and ceilings can feel like diving into a labyrinth of options. Rockfon has been

things to

see and do at Clerkenwell Design Week 2024

- CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK -

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) returns to London from 21 – 23 May 2024, standing as one of the leading international design festivals, FREE to all visitors (register now). This year’s edition boasts the most extensive programme to date, featuring a greater number of exhibition venues, brands, showrooms and installations than ever before. This expansion firmly establishes the festival as the go-to destination for specification within the architecture and design community.

Amidst a rich tapestry of new launches, presentations and events, here’s a round-up of the top things to see and do at the May event; from innovative farming by-product designs and the renaissance of natural stone and wood to AI-crafted cocktails and industry discussions on neurodiversity.

NEW COLLECTIONS

Fritz Hansen will reveal its new collection at its Cowcross Street showroom in a special feature titled ‘Inviting Workspaces’. Curated to explore both commercial and residential working environments, the exhibit will display furniture and accessories from designers including Jaime Hayon and Jørn Utzon.

At its Great Sutton Street showroom, Domus will present a colourful exhibit of tile designs created by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby to celebrate their 10year collaboration with its brand partner Mutina. The installation will also feature a new collection named ‘Time’.

In the British Collection (St James’s Church), SCP will launch a new Peonia armchair by Wilkinson and

Rivera, a low-lying sculptural armchair made at a specialist factory in Norfolk, using 100% natural and sustainable materials. Meanwhile, Another Country will showcase its new ‘Series Five’ furniture inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.

At Detail at the Order of St John, Omexco will unveil three new ranges, including the Archipelago design crafted from Capiz shells and shimmering mica minerals. While Arte presents its new Lani collection, featuring hand-crafted designs inlaid or embroidered with rattan and raffia, Kasthall will return with its new Vichy collection, a modern interpretation of the classic gingham pattern. Wallpaper design studio Erica Wakerly has teamed up with Sixteen3 to debut a new fabric collection, which will be shown at the latter’s Bastwick Street showroom as part of a pop-up that examines the evolving nature of workspaces.

Joining CDW and the neighbourhood for the first time is British lighting manufacturer J. Adams & Co, launching its new St John Street showroom just in time for the festival. Collaborating with tile expert Solus, the in-house team has repurposed materials from the site and factory offcuts to create stunning terrazzo tiles and worktops. Also new to the festival is Pooky Lighting, showcasing its new collection of rechargeable lights at Light at House of Detention.

NEW CREATIVES

CDW continues its tradition of championing emerging talent, spotlighting a diverse range of newcomers this year. Showing at Platform (70 Cowcross Street), Selfish Customs collaborates with local makers in East Anglia, repurposing farming by-products such as raw fleece, reed and barley straw to create unique homeware. Visitors can explore the studio’s creations alongside Colombian art historian-turned-designer Manuela Cabrales, who is launching shawls, trousers and handcrafted lamps using materials like lotus fibre and orange peels. Also featured is Barcelonabased Isabel Francoy’s La Sobremesa collection, which blends wicker weaving and glassblowing with modern design.

At Light, designer Tabitha Bargh will present her new lighting collection titled ‘Poly’. Utilising waste estate agent advertising boards made from Correx, typically unsustainable and non-biodegradable polypropylene, Bargh reimagines sustainability, crafting each piece with precision in her Brighton studio.

In the British Collection, Granite + Smoke will introduce its new hand-tufted rugs created in collaboration with Roger Oates Design. Crafted from 100% British blended wool, each rug undergoes meticulous hand-finishing in Devon after being spun and dyed in Yorkshire.

TREND: THE NEW STONE AGE

Stone is currently experiencing a renaissance, emerging as a highly sought-after material in the realms of architecture and design. With prestigious hospitality projects like The Ivy, Annabel’s and Harry’s Bar under its belt, Spectra Stone excels in sourcing, engineering and fitting natural and semiprecious stone in a manner that transcends mere functionality, elevating it to the realm of artistry. The British company will showcase its most exclusive collection of marble species at Old Sessions House.

Also, keep an eye out for two remarkable installations celebrating natural stone on Clerkenwell Green. British suppliers Albion Stone and Hutton Stone have commissioned architects Artefact to design ‘Brick from a Stone’, showcasing stone bricks being

launched by both companies this year and illustrating the low-energy process involved in producing them. On 23 May at 10:00, visitors can also join a dedicated talk on this subject matter led by a panel of experts – including Amin Taha of Groupwork and Benedetta Rogers of Artefact – at 15 Clerkenwell Close.

Meanwhile, Stone Federation has teamed up with Squire and Partners to create an explorative structure named ‘Stone Tapestry: Beyond the Surface’. This installation aims to demonstrate the sustainability, versatility and beauty of natural stone, featuring materials not only from Albion Stone and Hutton Stone but also from Britannicus Stone, Dunhouse Quarry and Tradstocks.

TREND: FOR THE LOVE OF WOOD

Wood remains a prominent material for many brands at CDW this year, particularly in the British Collection. Benchmark will bring a new adaptable storage system, developed with Foster + Partners, to the festival, featuring full carbon footprint labelling, a lifetime repair service and a take-back scheme.

Independent makers such as Matthew Burt and Dovetailors transform furniture into art forms. The former will present ‘Making from the Collection’, offering its timeless designs as part of a made-to-order service, while the latter will showcase a new range of stools with organic shapes resembling sculpted wood. In addition to established businesses, a new wave of British furniture designers emerges.

Collinson embraces classic English craft and understated luxury with its freestanding kitchen and shelving unit, while James UK will unveil its Holton chair, reviving traditional Windsor chair-making with a contemporary aesthetic that celebrates joinery as art.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

Neurodiversity has emerged as a leading topic gaining momentum among architects and designers, driven by the ambition to create environments that cater to diverse needs. On 22 May (14:00) in Spa Fields, as part of Conversations at Clerkenwell, Ultrafabrics will assemble a panel of experts from Gensler, Squire and Partners, Pantone, and the founder of Seedlip and The Hidden 20% podcast. They will delve into how multisensory design can transform and enrich our interactions with the world, particularly in workplaces and public spaces.

AllSfär is also addressing this important subject with a talk at its Baltic Street East showroom. Scheduled for 22 May at 15:30, the session will be led by the founders of the neurodiversity consultancy ZoneND, focusing on designing for the senses and why it is

the key to positive wellbeing and neuro-inclusive practice.

Workplace technology specialist LeftBrain will host a pop-up showroom at Second Home during the festival. Themed ‘The Future of the Digital Workspace’, the line-up includes talks, networking events and consultations. Look out for partners including The School of Life and Dropbox; the former will lead a talk on ‘Emotional Intelligence at Work’, while the latter will host a giveaway of a VR headset. Notably, there’s an evening party on 23 May, featuring bespoke AI-generated cocktails crafted by a mixologist.

Fringe partner Cult Vision on Goswell Road will collaborate with 2023 Shed of the Year winner Archie Proudfoot on a live installation in its shop window throughout CDW. The artist will employ gold leaf to create mirrored surfaces on the glass, playing with reflections of the viewer and the cityscape behind them. Simultaneously, classic spring imagery will be incorporated, offering a unique visual experience.

Also as part of the Fringe programme, Pilbrow and Partners will open its doors with a life drawing class on 22 May at 18:00. This event will feature life models seated among architectural models and material samples, inviting participants to capture the interplay between architecture and the human scale. The session will be guided by artist Brian Sayers and is free to attend (advance booking required).

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

This year, CDW has introduced three international pavilions to the festival. The Italian Collection will feature 31 brands on the first floor of Design Fields, showcasing furniture, lighting and textiles. Catapult will host the German Collection, presenting its country’s acclaimed brands and furniture, while the Danish Collection will take over the magnificent Paxton Locher House, highlighting the finest in Danish design, including Linie Design, Nordlux, Ro Collection and Sika Design. Ceramics of Italy is also back on St John’s Square with a great line-up of tile experts, from Ninefifty to La Fabbrica and Acquario Due.

Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 takes place across EC1, London from 21 – 23 May. For more information, please visit clerkenwelldesignweek.com – registration is now open.

Award winning ironmongery at the OWO

Steeped in history, one of the most iconic building renovations to have occurred in recent years is that of London’s Old War Office (OWO). Sensitively restored over an 8-year period, at a cost of over £1billion, the Grade II listed building is now home to the exclusive 120-bedroom 5* Raffles London hotel as well as 85 super-prime luxury residences.

With the specification of over 5,300 doors and 1,000 windows to co-ordinate as part of the redevelopment, project lead EPR Architects sought specialist expertise from HAF @ John Planck for the sourcing of the vast quantities of ironmongery required.

Barny Bott, Business Development Manager from HAF, said “Monumental is the only word we can use to describe the scale of the project. With such a huge number of doors and windows to furnish and numerous different consultants and interior designers to liaise between, our effective co-ordination and communication skills were important factors to the success of this project.”

HAF’s involvement in the project spanned a staggering 6-year period, liaising with 37 different consultants, including four separately appointed interior designers, creating 19 separate hardware packages.

fasteners, sash lifts and stops, sliding pocket doors with flush fitting handles, wardrobe rails, limiting stays, cupboard knobs, bespoke cranked handles, umbrella racks and wardrobe light plates.

Barny continues, “Most of the hardware was bespoke designed and manufactured, crafted to either directly replicate the original hardware that had previously been in place, or to reflect the concepts devised by the interior design teams. Where standard products were used, we co-ordinated their refinishing to match the burnished bronze finish that had been used throughout. We also applied a protective, Nanotech coating to common area fittings to protect guests from ongoing and future infectious diseases.”

Given the number and variety of door designs, sizes, construction and ironmongery requirements, fire testing was also an extensive part of the process. Barny said: “There were over 50 different door designs in total, each of which was outside of the door manufacturer’s standard test scope and had to be independently fire tested.”

Whilst only completed in September last year, HAF @ John Planck has already won a number of awards for the OWO project. Presented by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), it was awarded the Residential Award, Hospitality Award and Winner of Winners Award at the AI Specification Awards 2024 with the judges commenting that it is “A stunning and in some cases breathtaking project” that was “difficult to find fault with”.

The list of products provided by HAF is vast and included many ‘bespoke-design’ pieces including door hinges with decorative finials, lever handles, pull handles, door knobs, push plates as well as various window fittings and espagnolette bolts. Other items supplied include automatic door operators, electric locks, overhead manual and hold-open door closers, floor spring closers with special ‘flooring cover’ trays, door coordinators, ornate drop rings, casement www.johnplanck.co.uk

Explore the Beauty of Handwoven Capiz Shells with Shoreline

- SHORELINE -

Innovations introduces Shoreline from our Spring 2024 collection, Allure. Capiz shells form the horizontal stripes of Shoreline, meticulously woven together by hand with a metallic warp yarn that enhances the natural pearlescent shine of the shells. Whether in a coastal retreat or a city penthouse, this opulent wallcovering adds stunning layers to the wall. The strips are cut into varying widths to unveil the metallic backing, further accentuating the natural texture of the shells.

Innovations’ new Spring collection, Allure, explores the art of printmaking, where every stroke, every texture, and every impression tells a unique story, capturing a moment of creativity frozen in time. In our exploration of prints, we discovered the inherent beauty found within everyday objects – from simple indoor plants to the intricate details of shells and textiles, as their unique forms are transformed into pieces of art.

The patterns in the Allure collection reflect the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, texture and tone, adding contrast and intrigue to any space.

Each print and texture in the collection tells a story, as these brief impressions in turn leave a lasting impression on the wall.

Skilled craftsmanship

- NEWMOR WALLCOVERINGS -

The latest collections from Newmor Wallcoverings provide endless possibilities for interior designers looking to create exceptional and distinctive spaces that stand up to the rigours of hospitality life. Each design has been inspired by what Newmor are best known for – skilled craftsmanship.

Manufactured in Wales, hoteliers and designers can select with confidence as all three new collections are available from stock. The robust fabric-backed vinyl collections are specifically designed to endure the demands of commercial spaces.

The three new stocked collections are:

Oxford: Tailored Luxury

The Oxford design pays homage to the timeless Oxford cloth, a hallmark of classic tailoring. With its basket-weave structure and lustrous aspect, this collection exudes the meticulous craftsmanship and precision synonymous with London’s Savile Row. The fabric effect design boasts a sharp and clean aesthetic, elevated by the inclusion of micas and metallics, which add a further touch of refinement.

Rose Campbell, head of design and marketing at Newmor said, “Oxford has a high-end tailored look. The colour palette is muted and elegant, featuring a broad selection of neutrals, accentuated by the rich tones of copper, moss, and indigo”.

Piazza: Urban Grandeur

Piazza captivates with sleek lines and a subtle metallic finish which glistens like the windows overlooking a bustling town square. This emboss is a masterpiece of intricate detail, capturing light from various angles.

The geometric linear pattern offers a subtle, all-over urban effect.

Rose Campbell explains, “The refined linear detail enhances the cosmopolitan vibe of this architectural inspired design. Warm and sophisticated tones with accents of steel grey, chocolate brown copper, olive and rich gold add to this understated luxury look”.

Raffia: Natural Craftsmanship

Raffia pays tribute to the time-honoured craft of raffia weaving, rooted in the rich traditions of Madagascar. This design encapsulates the essence of this ancient art form, infusing warmth and authenticity of natural craftsmanship into interior spaces. Inspired by dried raffia palm leaves, Newmor’s Raffia design blends tradition with contemporary design in a tactile matte finish enhanced by a deep woven emboss.

Rose Campbell said, “We managed to capture the beauty of this weave with an incredibly realistic and detailed emboss. Inspiration for the earthy colour palette came from the natural dying processes traditionally used on raffia. Our matte finish makes it difficult to differentiate this robust wallcovering from an original raffia weave, making it a viable option for commercial spaces embracing biophilic design”.

Enhancing the Luxe Experience: Crystals’ Impact on High-End Hospitality

- CRYSTAL AURAS -

In the world of hospitality, where every detail contributes to the guest experience, venues are constantly seeking innovative ways to elevate luxury. From opulent furnishings to personalised services, switched on establishments spare no expense in creating an atmosphere of indulgence and relaxation.

Today’s operator is harnessing the ancient art of Feng Shui and crystals into décor schemes that aim to not only look exceptional but enhance the energy and atmosphere – ultimately enriching the guest experience.

This philosophy is a practice that advocates the use of crystals to balance energies, alleviate stress, and foster a sense of tranquillity. Placing crystals throughout public spaces, such as lobbies, spas, lounges or bedrooms, can generate an ambiance that resonates with serenity and positive vibrations – but it must be done sensitively to get the full benefit.

Specialists in offering this deftness of touch is the internationally renowned, Crystal Auras, who have been sourcing crystals for an esteemed business and private clientele since 2020. The expert team, headed up by founder, Nyree Brough, work to embrace the crystalline energies to enhance, support, aid growth and transformation for every client – big or small – through the positive, healing vibrations of crystals.

“Crystals can deliver both an aesthetic and energetic space that deliver beauty you see and feel energetically, attracting abundance and supporting success,” says Nyree Brough.

She adds; “We’re seeing a transition across all areas, including the luxury market, towards holistic, spiritual wellness, and an immersive experience that is felt energetically. People are moving away from processed and transactional environments, to focus on rejuvenating the mind, body and soul.”

In addition to enhancing the guest experience, the integration of crystals aligns with the growing

demand for sustainable and holistic practices within the hospitality industry – something at the very heart of Crystal Auras, who only source crystals that respect environmental conservation and ethical mining practices, resonating with guests who prioritise responsible tourism and eco-conscious lifestyles, as much as luxury.

The integration of crystals into the world of hospitality is being embraced by some of the world’s most respected brands as they use crystals to shape the modern guest experience – with Crystal Auras being singled out as one of the sector’s leading voices.

One exemplary venue is the Mandarin Oriental, Doha, where Cassandra Forrest, the Senior Director of Spa & Wellness, has collaborated extensively with Nyree to introduce the brand-new Crystal & Sound Ritual into the spa’s range of specialised offerings. Cassandra notes, “The treatment has been exceptionally wellreceived, with numerous wellness guests praising it as one of the most enjoyable experiences they have ever had.” In keeping with its Oriental heritage and incorporating elements of Feng Shui, the spa is also planning to place crystals throughout the spa spaces in collaboration with Nyree, aiming to enhance the energies and promote abundance on all levels.

So, whether viewing through the lens of ancient wisdom, contemporary design aesthetics, or holistic wellness principles, it’s clear to see that crystals can offer a multifaceted approach to enhancing the ambiance and energy of every hospitality establishment – including yours!

Championing versatile design, promoting sustainability and being a role model…

- IA DESIGNS -

With almost 20 years’ experience within the commercial and residential interior design industry, I have been blessed to have worked on various projects in highly creative design studios. Working with talented teams to deliver for clients such as Levi’s, Lego, Carluccio’s, Pizza Express, Burberry, Lush, Roomzzz, Iconinc, British Land, Bruntwood and local authorities just to name a few.

With experience comes a greater understanding of design and a new found respect for the process and the various suppliers, consultants and trades that help deliver the projects. The saying ‘who you know’ rather than ‘what you know’ is very prevalent in the design industry and your vison is only a drawing without the help of a great team.

My love for storytelling and sustainability has really shaped my recent work within the leisure and hospitality industry. Becoming a more conscious designer that champions sustainability and educates clients big or small on the impact their decisions make. Helping give a greater understanding of good design and the environment is something I am actively encouraging, in particular within South Asian communities.

Creative industries are often misunderstood and underrepresented within ethnic minority communities,

though it is good to see this has started to change.

Growing up, design was something I was good at and had a passion for, but not considered as a career choice. I didn’t have anyone from my background working in the creative industry for advice, it all felt like a gamble when considering to go to Art college to study design. It’s great to see how design has become accessible to all and there is a new appreciation for aesthetic experiences that are multi-sensory. Through education and the new found rise on social channels interior design is becoming highly sought after and ultimately great for business. Big brands have been using design consultants for years but the surge of smaller brands and independents has made ‘the designer’ a well-kept secret.

My recent work with MyLahore Restaurants has given me the opportunity to revitalize a Grade II listed building and also use sustainable materials. The former coach house is over 300 years old and a community hub. The project was also shortlisted for ‘Best restaurant design’ at the Northern Design awards. The space is a hive of activity and yet the character of the building has been preserved and celebrated.

New multi-million pound development set to deliver a delicious dinning destination at McArthurGlen designer outlet

Bridgend

McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Bridgend can reveal major development plans to enhance the food offering and experience for guests at the South Wales destination.

To ensure that the Centre continues to attract the most exciting food and beverage restaurant partners for visitors across the country, the Designer Outlet will undertake a substantial investment to redevelop the Food Court area and replace it with new and exciting restaurants. The plans are set to commence at the end of this month and be complete by late Autumn.

The multi-million-pound development will feature a modernised style with bright features and a fresh fit out to welcome three new restaurants. The development and new restaurants will create 100+ additional job opportunities for the local community – within the construction team itself and restaurant staffing.

- 52EDITOR’S CHOICE
- MCARTHURGLEN -

The new food court development is the latest announcement as part of the Centre’s investment following a plethora of stores opening over the last year including the largest adidas outlet in Wales, Barbour, Carvela, The North Face, Puma and Character as well as looking ahead Rituals which is set to open this April too.

Construction on the new development is confirmed to commence from 30th April when restaurants within the existing food court are set to close at end of day; McDonalds from 14th April, Chop Stix from 21st April and Nando’s from 5th May.

However popular eateries including recently opened Zizzi’s and Five Guys will remain open as well as Wagamama, Costa Coffee, Starbucks, Greggs, Krispy Kreme and Sidoli’s. In addition, access to ODEON Luxe Cinema will remain possible throughout this period as well via its main entrance.

Hayden Tucker, Centre Manager at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Bridgend said: “After celebrating our 25th anniversary last year, we’re extremely excited to see plans for the Food Court redevelopment commencing this month. In a bid to deliver continued value through our unmatched shopping offering, the new dining destination will enhance a day out

experience for families, individuals and couples alike. So, whether guests visit for lunch after a morning full of shopping or simply stopping by for a date night, there will be a wide range of premium and fast-food restaurants suitable for everyone. We are looking forward to the new dining area opening later this Autumn and will have further updates coming soon, so watch this space!”

When Safety meets Design

Textiles that satisfy international fire standards are an absolute must in the hotel sector thus putting a special challenge to hotel designers and interior decorators. They have to respect the fire regulations and at the same time create a stylish interior that has to fulfil design guidelines and distinctive individual requirements.

Trevira CS fabrics meet the important fire safety standards that have been defined worldwide and stand out for their permanently flame retardant qualities. It is the built-in safety which makes the difference. In contrast with other fibers and textiles which owe their flame retardant properties to a finish that must be replaced after washing or cleaning, Trevira CS provides permanent safety which cannot be reduced by use, cleaning or ageing. This is due to the chemical structure of the polyester fiber: the flame-retardant properties are firmly anchored in the fiber and cannot be altered by external influences. Trevira CS fabrics can come in 3 different versions:

Trevira CS stands for fabrics made from 100 % virgin flame retardant Trevira® material.

Trevira CS flex marks fabrics with additional functions and design elements. These can be achieved by using special flame retardant yarns, lending them sound absorbing properties or melange effects, to name just two of the broad range of variations. The fabrics may contain up to 25 % of such non-Trevira® yarns.

The Trevira CS eco brand stands for flame retardant textiles with at least 50% recycled material content obtained in either pre-consumer or post-consumer recycling processes. These flame retardant, recycled Trevira® products are GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified.

Due to their inherently flame retardant properties, Trevira CS fabrics create a safe, attractive and comfortable environment for hotels, restaurants, hospitals, offices, public buildings, railways, aircrafts and cruise ships. A wide range of Trevira CS collections with thousands of designs is available worldwide. The fabrics are used as curtains, drapes, decorative and upholstery fabrics, in interior sun protection and as wall coverings or room dividers.

In all applications functionality and performance are a must. However, Trevira CS has a lot more to offer. From a sustainably furnished ambiance, to a luxurious interior or a casual outdoor area, to a cozy retreat – Trevira CS creates a high-end aesthetic, an atmosphere that inspires and appeals to our emotions – and does so with fabrics that are safe.

Everyone can create their own personal kingdom, their place of retreat, with Trevira CS fabrics. Materials with a pleasant, comfortable feel are in demand here like for example in a residential ambience – furnished with fabrics that feel irresistibly good: soft, cuddly, comfortable, cozy, homey, snug, relaxed.

When Safety meets Color

A range of 30 flame-retardant, spun-dyed, UV-stable Trevira CS filament yarns is available for the textile design of outdoor areas. Spun-dyed yarns give textiles

- 54EDITOR’S CHOICE

an enduring color quality and long-lasting durability. In addition, they are easy on the environment as dyeing processes for yarns and fabrics are no longer necessary, thus saving energy, water and chemicals.

When Safety meets Sustainability

Trevira CS takes multiple approaches to enhance its sustainability performance. One approach is to take care of fabrics that are no longer needed. For some years already, Trevira CS has had a take-back program in place. Used Trevira CS fabrics (post-consumer) or unsold Trevira CS residual materials (pre-consumer) can be recycled as part of the Trevira CS return program. The returned fabrics are mechanically recycled and shredded into torn fibers, which are further processed into nonwovens with various specifications, if necessary, by adding new and/or low-melt fibers. These can be used in a variety of ways, like for thermal and acoustic insulation and as soundproofing panels. Nonwovens for acoustic panels are particularly interesting, becoming sound-absorbing wall elements, free-standing partitions, ceiling suspensions or decorative objects, to name a few.

The long-term goal in developing sustainable products is undoubtedly to enter a circular economy. For this new path, an innovative Trevira CS product development was launched, producing flame retardant fibers and filament yarns from chemically recycled raw material. By recycling valuable materials such as packaging material, waste can be avoided. The raw material obtained from this recycling process is comparable to the original material and can be used again in high-quality products. The greatest advantage, however, lies in the potential that this approach opens up for the future. If we use raw materials obtained by chemical recycling of PET packaging / bottles today, we could potentially recycle textile waste in a similar fashion in the future.

Tights in the Box

- FANCY PANTY KØBENHAVN -

With Fancy Panty København, women no longer have to compromise. The new brand from Copenhagen offers chic designs in Italian premium quality at a fair price and sets new and innovative standards in the use and storage of fine hosiery.

The concept of Fancy Panty København is all about simplicity and clarity, making it easy to shop for fine hosiery. The pre-packed Classic Box contains a selection of twelve essential items, i.e. tights and knee-highs for every occasion, whether for everyday wear, business or special events. With this convenient solution, all you have to do is choose between color and size. The MyStyle Box offers customers the opportunity to make their own selection from all the items in the current collections. In this way, classic pieces can be put together individually alongside more robust travel tights or colorful knee-highs. However, it is also possible to order only individual items in the CubeTight Box. The current collections are continually being extended with further exciting products that will expand the product portfolio.

The beautifully designed unique boxes specially created for storage allow you to keep your tights and knee-highs tidy and organized. Every woman will agree that it is incredibly annoying when you take a pair of tights out of the wardrobe and find that they are damaged due to incorrect storage. In addition, you often can’t find the tight you want to wear on a particular day for a particular event quickly and end up reaching for a new pack of tights. As a result, tights and knee-highs often become a disposable product and the consumption of a woman who regularly wears tights increases.

The robust boxes are reusable and refillable. The tights themselves do not require any plastic in such packaging, which makes the product concept sustainable overall. Fancy Panty København has created a travel bag for the safe transportation of spare tights that fits easily into any handbag or suitcase - the perfect solution for traveling.

Even though the originality of Fancy Panty København lies in its original packaging, the company has very high standards when it comes to the quality of its fine legware. The manufacturer is an Italian company with over 60 years of experience in the production of fine hosiery and so Fancy Panty København work with high standards and EU certifications plus with a very high value on yarn with high quality. The combination of traditional Italian production with rational and modern Danish design makes Fancy Panty København unique.

Premium shortbread & biscuits

- DEAN’S -

Dean’s is a family-owned business based in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, producing premium shortbread, biscuits and savoury cheese bites.

The story began in 1975 when Helen Dean started baking shortbread in her kitchen in Huntly to raise money for the Huntly Pipe Band, where her husband Bill was drum major. Their touring helped spread her shortbread’s fame far and wide, and soon, the aroma of home baking would fill the town as Helen established her own small bakery to meet demand.

From these humble origins Dean’s has developed significantly, employing 140 people across the business.

The success of the company has been built upon the popularity of Helen’s original shortbread recipe and over the years we have continued to innovate with the development of further shortbread products as well as our savoury cheese bites and plant based shortbread. Some of the delectable flavours in our shortbread range include black forest gateau, salted caramel & apple, cinnamon bun and rhubarb & custard.

Onsite, we have our Gift Shop and Bistro which all offer a wide variety of choice to customers along with viewing windows into our production areas.

All our products are produced, processed, and packaged in our own purpose-built factory in Huntly, and we pride ourselves on using time honoured handcrafted baking methods. Our products are produced using the finest ingredients and slowly baked for a satisfying melt in the mouth texture.

Today we are a household brand in Scotland, slowly expanding over the UK. We have a strong brand presence within all major supermarket retailers in Scotland, within the gift sector and have a growing export business, including China, USA and Australia. www.deans.co.uk

An interactive dining performance

- BAR KAR

At Bar Kar, an immersive wood-fired restaurant that revolves around the concept of primordial community cooking, the journey begins at the main entrance, where guests are greeted by a distorted arch, evoking the ambiance of a cave-like space. Inside, patrons get immersed in an infinite firewoodlined pathway that leads toward the heart of the establishment.

The cavernous interior, with its earthy terracotta hues, was inspired by the ancient earth oven pits, which in ancient times were used to cook and smoke food in the ground. The two main features of the space, a circular bar counter constructed out of red travertine and a plush banquet sofa seating area anchored by a fiery gold metal mesh sculpture, are both abstract interpretations of the elemental force of heat and fire.

- 74FOOD & DRINK
-

For those seeking an interactive dining experience, the Chef’s Table offers a U-shaped counter constructed from grey travertine, accommodating up to 20 guests eager to engage with the chefs and witness the primordial style woodfire cooking up close. The private dining room transports diners into a cocoon-like sanctuary, drawing inspiration from the organic contours of a cave, with cascading layers and a floating fire mesh sculpture above a striking red travertine dining table.

Bar Kar epitomizes the concept of primordial community cooking, where elements of heat and fire are embodied in terracotta stucco walls, fiery mesh installations, and the earthy hues of red travertine, inviting guests on a culinary journey reminiscent of ancient cooking traditions.

A revolution in wine cooling

- ICE COOL DESIGN -

Introducing the HIELO ‘Aluminium’ Wine Cooler from Ice Cool Design a revolutionary cooling solution that goes beyond conventional wine coolers. Crafted with precision using high-quality aluminium, renowned for its exceptional heat exchange properties, this wine cooler is an experience in itself.

As you run your fingers along its sleek, metallic surface, you’ll immediately sense the premium craftsmanship and the cool touch that signifies its excellent heat dissipation capabilities. The HIELO Wine Cooler not only keeps your favourite wines at the perfect temperature but elevates the entire wine-drinking experience.

The exterior of the cooler is a testament to modern design, featuring a seamless aluminium construction that not only enhances durability but also exudes sophistication. The smooth, matte finish is pleasing to the touch, and the cooler’s lightweight nature adds a level of practicality that sets it apart.

What truly makes this wine cooler stand out is its ability to create an optimal environment for your wine collection. The aluminium body acts as a highly efficient heat exchanger, maintaining a consistent temperature inside the cooler. This ensures that your whites, and sparkling wines are preserved at their ideal serving temperatures, allowing you to enjoy each bottle to its fullest potential.

Describing the HIELO Aluminium Wine Cooler solely through words cannot convey the tactile pleasure and the sense of luxury it imparts. To fully grasp the quality and innovation embedded in this product, one must experience the cool touch of its aluminium exterior and appreciate how it enhances the overall enjoyment of your wine collection.

Keeping wine at the ideal drinking temperature is something we often take for granted.

Making sure a wine doesn’t lose its cool is nothing new to sommeliers and wine connoisseurs. Bringing it to life effectively, simply and responsibly hasn’t been as easy.

The Hielo® maintains a temperature as close to fridge conditions as possible, where wine can rest on the tabletop without losing its cool – or being over-chilled. Many conventional wine buckets and tabletop coolers use thermal conduction to actively chill wine bottles straight from the fridge, using cold metal or excessive ice.

The Hielo® intelligent design works in reverse, increasing coolness over time to counteract wine getting naturally warmer. It uses just five ice cubes to create a perfectly cool internal chamber where wine stays fresh and refrigerated but doesn’t turn ice cold.

The Hielo® patented design ensures no direct contact with ice or water, so bottles stay dry and drip-free –ensuring a pleasant, safe, and mess-free experience whether at home or in the restaurant.

This product:

1. Maintains your beverage at fridge temperature

2. Produces no drips, mess, or wet labels

3. Uses a minimal amount of ice

4. Is stackable.

5. Does not exist elsewhere.

6. Is a carbon assessed product

7. Is available now to be shipped worldwide.

Bringing real flavour to the table

- OTC BEVERAGES -

My brand of non alcoholic beverages was born as idea in 2017, when I attended my fathers birthday party. I felt there was a gap to be filled as the drinks tasted good, were made with minimal ingredients and had benefits associated with drinking them. I wanted to take the same products and elevate them. Create the same recipes with quality ingredients, refreshing taste and wrapped in packaging that had a premium look and feel. I realised early on that I did not want to just create a drink, I wanted to create a Brand. A brand that could make a difference and leave a legacy for my children and my nephew. I researched a manufacturer, did a course on Public food Health and passed the exam. Within three months of launching, we were shortlisted for the best drinks category at the Food Matters Event in Excel: in 2020, we were shortlisted in the Fruit Juices and Mixers category, in 2021, E2 Media Food & Beverages award and I won international Business Woman’s of the Year Award 2022.

In addition to the above, we have been included in the Mah Rainey Movie and MoBo celeb Xmas hampers in 2020.

In 2022, we attended the NOPE Event in Excel London, an event we had waited to attend for 2 years. It was a great success for us, as we were finalists in our category, Best organic Drink. the following morning one of the judges visited the stand to congratulate us on creating a great drink.

In the midst of the pandemic we launched our new flavour, Butterfly Pea Flower with Juice. The new flavour was well received and we entered the product in the Great British Food awards. The judges give a high mark of 15 as an assessment, our new flavour scored

12/15, which is a great watermark that confirms we are doing the right thing with our product development.

In 2021, we worked with an up and coming Director on a movie called ‘On the Other Foot” our beverages were used as product placement in the movie and we were recognised in the credits as a partner. We will be working with the same director on his next movie which is being filmed right now. We are so excited about these partnerships. WE have a number of events coming up in the year, one of which is us being a partner of the St James House Group Platinum Jubilee Celebrations - Strive for Perfection - with the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club. OTC will be featured in a commemerative book that will be issued to all the owners of Rolls Royce and Bentley’ along with all of the showrooms. We have achieved a lot in the 5 years that we have been in business and we are looking forward to gaining more customers and becoming a household brand.

Thank you for your support, as we could not do this without you.

Hotel Eden, Rome announces new executive chef Salvatore Bianco

- HOTEL EDEN -

Hotel Eden Rome, part of Dorchester Collection, is pleased to announce its newly appointed executive chef, Salvatore Bianco, from Monday April 29, 2024. Bianco will oversee the entirety of the hotel’s culinary offering, including La Terrazza, Il Giardino Ristorante, La Libreria, the events spaces and in-room dining.

Born in Torre del Greco (Campania), Bianco has always been passionate for art, and today he defines cooking as “the only art form that can make all the senses interact at the same time.” His cooking philosophy is rooted in the interplay of contrast, the reverence for local terroir, and a deep appreciation for culture, memories, and flavours that are inherent to a specific place.

With an extensive background in the gastronomic world, Bianco previously trained under the guidance of culinary legend Gualtiero Marchesi. Their paths first crossed at the renowned Relais L’Albereta in Franciacorta, followed by five years spent at Osteria dell’Orso in Rome, where Bianco worked as Marchesi’s sous-chef. Following his tenure in Rome, Bianco returned to Naples where he oversaw the culinary direction of the Romeo Hotel, notably achieving and maintaining a Michelin star for the restaurant “Il Comandante” since 2012.

At Hotel Eden, Bianco will develop a new menu for

La Terrazza, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, and Italian restaurant Il Giardino Ristorante; both located on the top floor of the hotel, overlooking Rome. Menus will feature classic local recipes with a modern Mediterranean influence.

“I am truly honoured to join the team at Hotel Eden and being part of a hotel with such a rich history. I look forward to bringing my expertise and knowledge in modern Italian cuisine to the hotel’s culinary offering, and I extend my gratitude to general manager, Mirko Cattini for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity,” comments Salvatore Bianco.

Mirko Cattini, general manager at Hotel Eden says: “We are delighted to welcome executive chef Salvatore Bianco to our team. His collaborative spirit and experience make him the ideal candidate to lead Hotel Eden’s culinary brigade to new heights, signalling an exciting new chapter in our gastronomic journey. We are confident that his innovative and sustainable approach, centred on elevating local ingredients and refining culinary techniques, will exceed the expectations of our guests.”

Italian restaurant celebrating La Dolce Vita to open in South West London

The team behind one of London’s legendary 90s haunts is delighted to announce its newest restaurant opening, Fellini. Due to open 6th May in Chelsea, the team behind the iconic Paparazzi Café intends to restore authentic Italian hospitality into the London dining scene, prioritising personal touch and valued relationships over gimmicks and maximalism, whilst retaining a Dolce Vita feel throughout.

Based on the previous successes of Paparazzi Café, the team are homing in on the true essence of hospitality and the old-timer recognition of loyalty in the new opening, encouraging guests from every walk of life to join them in the dining room – alone or in groups, all will be made to feel at home. On the menu, there will be a range of sharing options, making the venue

- 82FOOD & DRINK

an appropriate choice for a colloquial lunch, a long afternoon or an evening meal kicking on late into the night.

Food is to be approachable and unfussy, with a considered menu of classic Italian dishes and specialities, made with ingredients from carefully sourced suppliers in Italy and around the UK. Fellini showcases a healthier, holistic approach to Italian food, with a focus on nourishing and fuelling the community whilst offering true quality.

Dish highlights include the Fellini Primavera with homemade aubergine and basil pesto and courgettes, and the entirely vegan Ravioli Rossi, consisting of spicy chickpea-filled pasta served with a butter and sage sauce. The menu features an array of freshly prepared main-sized salads and a selection of veg-forward pizzas are prepared with organic and excellently sourced seasonal produce, with the option to make any pasta dishes and pizzas gluten free upon request. Secondi include Veal Milanese and simply grilled fish, with the menu rounding out with much loved decadent and delicious Italian desserts such as the Fellini Tiramisu

and a Flourless Chocolate Cake. Alongside there will be an ever-changing specials board chosen by the knowledgeable team, and a Sunday Feasting menu is planned to launch soon after opening.

Lookswise, guests can expect Fellini to evoke a sense of the slow-paced Italian summer lifestyle in leafy London - attractive and luxurious without the gauche. The restaurant will feature olive trees, providing a taste of Tuscany and the walls will be lined with black and white photos of familiar faces, mounted in glossy black frames. There will be backlit banquet seating surrounds the edge of the room, with the glass front half shuttered with rich walnut slats and roman blinds in olive linen to ensure that guests may retain their discretion as day turns to night. A terrazzo marble bar will run the length of the room, where guests are encouraged to join the bar staff for an aperitif or digestif upon their visit. The dining room will seat 75 covers inside, with a wrap-around terrace providing another 20 al fresco that will open to the public in June.

Owner Tony Aalam and team say: ‘We’ve been looking forward to opening our door at Fellini for some time now. Our commitment to ‘Come Era Una Volta’, or ‘How It Used to Be’, will be prevalent in the restaurant as we revive the personal touch of 20th century Italy, delivering true hospitality and timeless service. We hope that Fellini will naturally become a go-to for our neighbours and indeed draw visitors from across the city. We are filled with anticipation and eager to greet our guests.’

CardsSafe Supporting UK Golf Clubs

- CARDSSAFE -

CardsSafe has been working with UK hospitality businesses for over twenty years. It supports hotels, including Hilton Hotels, restaurants, bars, and golf clubs nationwide. CardsSafe is also ideal for golf courses, with their golf equipment rental in the pro shop and the clubhouse with food and bar tabs.

CardsSafe has had a long-standing relationship working with the London Golf Club since 2008. One of the UK’s most prestigious golf clubs, LGC boasts 36 holes of Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf, an award-winning clubhouse and hospitality facilities. Located in the south-east of England, set across 700 acres of idyllic Kent countryside just 20 miles from London. Grant Rumbelow, the Food and Beverage Operations Manager, says, “CardsSafe has been a welcome addition to the London Golf Club. We utilise the system in our Golf Shop and Spike Bar and oncourse with our Drinks Buggy. With CardsSafe, we can safely store customers’ cards whilst they enjoy their round of golf.”

The CardsSafe system is designed to securely retain customer credit, debit and ID cards while the cardholder runs a tab or hires a product or service. CardsSafe is also ideal in the pro shop or clubhouse bars and restaurants, allowing the safe-keeping of ID or bank cards while customers enjoy the facilities. The system is also mobile, allowing venues to offer extended service across the venue. The CardsSafe system is now in numerous prestigious UK golf courses, including Foxhills, Silvermere, and Redlibbets, and the demand for the system is increasing.

The CardsSafe system was first installed at Silvermere in Surrey in 2015 to tackle their customer hires. Additional units were added later after positive feedback from customers. CardsSafe has helped Silvermere securely store their customers’ bank cards

while hiring equipment or trialling their facilities. In addition, staff can act quickly should equipment need fixing or replacing because incidents can be reported as soon as the customer returns. Dani, manager at Silvermere Golf Course, explains, “CardsSafe has allowed us to safely retain customers’ cards while they trial equipment on the driving range. We can trust CardsSafe and efficiently replace any faulty or lost components.”

Vesper Bar launches Essentia

- THE DORCHESTER -

Vesper Bar at The Dorchester is set to launch a brand-new cocktail list on April 26, 2024. Essentia celebrates the powerful connection between scent and memories, with each of the 11 new cocktails celebrating a personal experience from a different member of the Vesper Bar team, thereby transporting guests on an adventure with every sip.

The Vesper Bar team, led by bar manager Lucia Montanelli and head bartender Denise Elisei, have crafted a list of cocktails that heightens the senses by reflecting on aromas, experiences and emotions. Each cocktail has been built on the foundations of The Olfactory Pyramid, a concept that visualises a fragrance through three levels; head (top notes), heart (middle notes) and base (end notes). Building on this principle, the team have crafted unique cocktails, evoking a memory through the smells.

Scents depicted through Essentia include mushroom foraging in the forest, salty sea air from summers on a boat, picking summer berries, nostalgic childhood birthday cakes, thunderstorms, and leather-bound library books. With imaginative and creative mixology, the cocktails play on the senses, with scents and aromas evoking an experience and bringing the memory to life.

- 86FEATURE FOCUS

FEATURE FOCUS

Highlights from the Essentia cocktail list include:

Sunkissed Summers: a boat trip to Capri in the heat of Italian summer – Seatrus gin, rhubarb ‘sea water’, aloe vera

Morning Sunshine: The beginning of spring, just as the days become longer, when the warm morning sunshine casts a vibrant prism of light reflecting off the table into a splendid rainbow all over the room – Enemigo Blanco tequila, Genever, lychee, kiwi, magnolia

Thunderstorm: Rainy days bringing the promise of new beginnings. Patchouli dances across damp grass and the wet, heavy earth –Altamura vodka, oregano mezcal, passionfruit, Greek punch, patchouli

Turning Pages: Hidden away in the corner of an antique library, a treasured leather-bound book was found. Open the pages to release a musty, sweet scent, tinged with vintage wine and earthy vanilla –Jack Daniels single barrel whiskey, cognac, white port, paper syrup, smoke

Birthday Wish, Timber, Morning Sunshine and Forbidden Berries are all available as non-alcoholic cocktails.

The new cocktail list launches on 26 April and will sit alongside Vesper Bar’s signature Vesper Martini. Served in a delicately styled glass featuring the same scallop shell design motif as the bar itself, the Vesper is a shaken cocktail of gin, vodka, a touch of sherry and a spritz of lemon.

During The Dorchester’s recent renovation, Swedish architect Martin Brudnizki redesigned Vesper Bar taking inspiration from the spirit and elegance of the roaring thirties. Ornate design runs throughout, including a 1930s Palladium leaf ceiling creating a warm effect for Martini hour. A series of Cecil Beaton pieces are hung within the bar, honoring the longstanding connection between Beaton, Brudnizki and The Dorchester.

An elevated sense of luxury

- WARWICK HOTELS & RESORTS -

The Capital Hotel and Apartments, part of the Warwick Hotels and Resorts Group, announce the completion of the latest stage of refurbishment.

Following significant refurbishment, the Deluxe guestrooms at The Capital are now complete, revealing beautiful art-led décor. The new-look rooms boast an elevated sense of luxury for discerning guests at this five-star Knightsbridge hotel, which is owned and operated by the Warwick Hotels and Resorts Group.

Designed by London-based interior design firm, JSJ Design, the interiors were inspired by the vibrant history of Knightsbridge and the Pre-Raphaelite art movement.

There are two distinct schemes across the new Deluxe guestrooms. Both take their names and colourways directly from oil paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, widely regarded as the founder of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Both schemes facilitate the bed as a natural focus, as guests enter their rooms. The upholstered headboard is inspired by the form of the windows of nearby Harrods, while the overlaid antique mirror feature above echoes the reflective floral sections in the wall panelling artist William Morris designed for the V&A café.

A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Pride of Britain, The Capital is home to 73 guestrooms, including suites and apartments.

We always strive to exceed guest expectations and the level of detail and design in the Deluxe rooms certainly delivers. The rooms feel opulent and luxurious and guest feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

Save time and resource, with better hygiene

In hospitality, maintaining hygiene standards, both front of house, and behind the scenes is crucial to guest experience, workplace satisfaction and importantly the health of everyone on the premises. While it takes time to get hygiene right, better practices and better equipment can actually save time in the long term, and improve productivity across the board.

Tork solutions continuously improve productivity and sustain hygiene compliance with reduced environmental impact. For example, the easy-to-use Tork Xpress® Multifold hand towel system now comes with towel bundles that are compressed by 50%1, which means dispensers can hold twice as many towels2 and serve twice as many customers before requiring a refill.

In hospitality, better hygiene really does mean better business. Learn more about Tork products at our website or visit our LinkedIn page.

Beautiful pots and planters

- TORC POTS -

Torc make everything from their studio in the British Isles creating beautiful pots and planters to enhance any outdoor (or indoor) space.

Working alongside a talented team of artisans this family run business really specializes in textures, scale and especially bespoke design. Their pots are shaped by hand until they take on their own unique form - no two pots are ever quite the same. When we are surrounded by so much that is mass produced Torc believe there is a real appreciation for handcrafted objects.

The design side of their business is getting busier all the time with landscape architects and garden designers alike realizing just how much expertise this company has to offer with a wealth of experience in design and problem solving to bring to the table. Torc welcome the opportunity to be involved at the design stage and are happy to contribute ideas when requested. Frequently being commissioned to provide planter designs and outdoor furniture as a one-off template for both commercial and residential spaces.

Launching their new contemporary shaped water bowl this month was a good example of how far they can go – the diameter of this piece can be offered up to 3m wide. Their green credentials are pretty impressive too.
