6 interior design trends explored

- INDEPENDENT HOTEL SHOW LONDON 2024 -

The Independent Hotel London, in partnership with James Hallam Insurance Brokers, made its return to Olympia London on 15th and 16th October, bridging together the independent hotelier and design community under one roof. In addition to amplifying an engaging two-day talks programme, the exhibition floor was the place to be to identify the latest products and emerging trends sweeping the boutique and independent hotel landscape.

Here is the show’s edit on which trends were most evident in the products displayed from both the exhibitors and in the various break-out areas.

Asrin Wallprint
Asrin Wallprint

Walls inspired by (playful) nature

As well as botanical interiors that sprouted from maximalism, organic textures in surface design have evolved in 2024 – no longer is this trend purely about referencing nature. Instead, it has moved on to embrace playfulness, something that boutique hotels are able to wholly embrace.

Asrin Wallprint captivated attendees with their enchanting and vibrant digitally printed wallpapers. Meanwhile, ATA Designs showcased a selection of textured wall coverings, inspired by ‘all things British’. Adding an artistic dimension to interior design, Joris Kuipers introduced the BERM collection, which brings the essence of the outdoors inside through its organic, leaf-like structures, creating a sculptural texture that breathes life into any space.

A sense of comfort

Curved, soft-edges and organic shapes, in both furniture and lighting design, were showcased by various exhibitors during the show. Corston, for example, presented its Brookfield lighting collection to inject a refined yet understated elegance to contemporary interiors. The pendant’s elegant threetiered shade features a seamless blend of modern minimalism and classic design.

This trend was also explored through the various products and technology displayed by bed manufacturers such as Hypnos, Naturalmat and Silentnight Group, all introducing new materials inspired by the science of sleep.

Exploring this concept away from FF&E, Crown International’s Clean Air range of paint, which is 99 per cent free of VOCs, is made from water-based air

purifying technology formulation. As a result, the paint absorbs chemicals and removes up to 45 per cent of the formaldehyde present from the air.

Elsewhere, the QuietRoom, curated by EventWell, brought this trend to life. The quiet space provided a nook away from the bustling show floor for attendees to unwind and become sensory decompressed in a calming environment.

Versatile living – furniture that adapts

As guests’ needs evolve, multifunctional design has surged in popularity, creating spaces that effortlessly shift from co-working hubs to lounges or even event venues. Boutique hotels can capitalise on this trend with modular furniture and flexible layouts that seamlessly adapt to diverse guest activities throughout the day.

Swift’s Model 3 modular sofas, for example, empower users to personalise their surroundings. Meanwhile, Aslotel captivated visitors with innovative storage solutions, showcasing minibars cleverly concealed within furniture and enhanced, discreet housekeeping trolleys that seamlessly blend functionality with effortless style.

Retro futurism and vintage revival

Cue the nostalgic nod to mid-century and retrofuturistic designs with a modern twist. Independent hotels are blending vintage design elements – think 70s-inspired furniture or retro lighting – with cutting-edge materials and tech-forward features. This juxtaposition results in a curated, eye-catching aesthetic that draws in guests craving a distinctive and

stylish stay. SAS Bonnecaze’s rattan chairs, brimming with characterful details, perfectly exemplified this fusion, adding warmth and authenticity to contemporary spaces while echoing the charm of bygone eras.

Exploring this trend with a dose of technology was Roberts Radio, known as the ‘nation’s favourite digital radio – made better’. The brand seamlessly blends vintage charm with cutting-edge technology, turning its iconic 1950s design into a modern, statement bedside piece.

Fluid technology

As technology becomes more integral to design, boutique hotels are embracing a trend that weaves smart solutions into their spaces in a subtle, nonintrusive way. This evolution in the past has included hidden wireless charging, touchless controls and invisible speakers that enhance guest experiences without detracting from aesthetic appeal.

This year, this trend was explored through new products, such as room temperature control panels from the likes of Zennio, and keyless entry systems from brands like Zonal.

Crown International’s Clean Air range

Revolutionising back-of-house operations, brands like Guestline, Eviivo and ReGuest showcased their latest integrated technology software, streamlining procedures to, ultimately, improve the overall guest experience.

Futuristic and bio-based materials

The rise of futuristic, bio-based materials is unmistakable, with mycelium, hemp, algae, cellulose, chitin, cork and bioplastic at the forefront of this innovative movement. The ESG hub served as a platform to explore new and unconventional solutions.

Independent and boutique hotels can leverage this trend by incorporating sustainable, biodegradable materials like mycelium into furniture, light fixtures, and wall panels. Renowned for its strength and ecofriendliness, mycelium infuses hotel interiors with a distinctive, eco-conscious flair.

Algae-based textiles and mushroom leather offer unique textures that cater to the growing demand for sustainable options among guests, delivering cuttingedge designs that larger hotel chains may take longer to adopt.

Hemp is another remarkable material gaining traction due to its durability, sustainability and versatility. Boutique hotels can utilise hempbased textiles for bedding, curtains and upholstery, providing natural, breathable fabrics that are also environmentally friendly. Additionally, hemp can be employed in construction materials like hempcrete, contributing to energy-efficient and sustainable building practices

From the show floor, the Independent Hotel Show London identified that the landscape of boutique and independent hotels is evolving with creativity and purpose. From the playful embrace of nature in interior design to the seamless integration of technology and sustainable materials, these trends reflect a growing commitment to enhancing guest experiences while prioritising comfort and innovation.

Dernier & Hamlyn’s Exquisite Recreation of George IV Chandeliers for Raffles London at The OWO

- DERNIER & HAMLYN -

The grandeur of Raffles London at The OWO lies not only in its historic walls but also in the stunning custom lighting that brings each space to life. At the heart of this transformation is Dernier & Hamlyn, the British lighting manufacturer commissioned to recreate magnificent George IV chandeliers for the prestigious Haldane Suite, designed by The Office of Thierry Despont. This collaboration allowed Dernier & Hamlyn to combine over 130 years of lighting expertise with their passion for British heritage restoration, resulting in a lighting masterpiece that balances history and luxury.

The Haldane Suite, once home to the offices of Winston Churchill and Sir Richard Haldane, is an elegant 250-square-metre, two-bedroom space defined by rich wood panelling, grand fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views over Whitehall. Inspired by pre-WWII photographs of the suite’s original lighting, Dernier & Hamlyn set out to recreate two brass chandeliers that would respect the building’s heritage while offering a sense of timeless sophistication.

To craft these unique fixtures, Dernier & Hamlyn’s artisans meticulously examined an 80-year-old image of the original chandeliers, using it to guide their initial sketches and final high-quality renderings. Each chandelier, nearly two metres tall and wide, was cast in solid brass, with twelve arms supporting twenty-four candle-lights and a central urn adorned with intricate acanthus leaf finials. These historical details echo the Haldane Suite’s ornate ceiling features, perfectly complementing the period character of the space.

The creation process was as intricate as the final chandeliers themselves. Dernier & Hamlyn’s team relied on a blend of traditional metalworking techniques and modern technology to achieve period accuracy and durability. Using 3D-printed models for casting, the team achieved flawless decorative elements and employed expert welding techniques to ensure a museum-quality finish. Given the chandeliers’ impressive size, they had to be assembled on-site and carefully installed on the suite’s fivemeter-high ceiling, a testament to Dernier & Hamlyn’s commitment to precision and artistry.

“It was an honour to be involved in the transformation of the Grade-II listed Raffles London at The OWO,” said Madeleine Rasmussen, Business Development Manager for Dernier & Hamlyn. “Recreating these chandeliers allowed us to blend historical authenticity with our passion for high-quality craftsmanship, breathing new life into this iconic space.”

Today, the George IV chandeliers illuminate the Haldane Suite, embodying the spirit of both Raffles London at The OWO and Dernier & Hamlyn’s commitment to heritage restoration. This project stands as a remarkable example of how bespoke lighting can seamlessly honour the past while enhancing a modern luxury experience.

An intense way of living

- BRABBU -

Over the years, BRABBU has inspired some of the world’s most respected interior designers and architects. Thanks to the ferocity, strength, and power characteristic of its products, the brand has the privilege of being present in many projects, both hospitality and residential. One of the most recent is Lifestyle Suites Rome Hotel, a rich and inviting journey through Italy’s tapestry of history and modern luxury.

The project was created by Italian architects Giovanna and Alberto Guarino, both passionate about Rome’s rich history and luxury design. To unite their two passions, they created the project and used BRABBU products as part of the decoration that tells the story behind each room.

EXCLUSIVE TOUCH

BRABBU’s exclusive touch can be found in this traditional hotel located in Piazza Navona. The bar, for example, is starred by the Bourbon Dining Chair, a product that embodies this grandeur through its button-tufted inner backrest, rich cotton velvet, and walnut-stained ash legs. The Bourbon Dining Chair is essential for making a room look glamorous and modern. This is thanks to its ability to refine every environment in which it is placed with its unique lines. The presence of this BRABBU product makes the hotel bar full of life and colour.

EXCLUSIVE DESIGN

Cay Wall Light is also present in the project and brings the rooms to life with its splendid golden light. With a matt cast brass structure, this brass sconce was designed to embody the final cry of nature and fulfill that role on the walls of Lifestyle Suites Rome Hotel.

The great asset of the Cay Wall Light is that it provides the necessary brightness that the room needs and its versatility to complement any other product that goes with it in the decor. Its presence is noticeable and its exclusive design makes the design of this traditional hotel in the heart of the Italian capital original.

CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC

Giovanna described the style of Lifestyle Suites Rome Hotel as “contemporary classic,” explaining how a careful balance was reached between paying attention to the building’s historical value and infusing it with a touch of modernity. The design embodies Rome’s ageless charm, mixing intricate details and grandeur with elegant accents and cutting-edge technology.

Giving a historical landmark fresh life was one of Giovanna’s favourite aspects of the project. The architectural integrity of the noble palace was retained while modern conveniences were introduced, exhibiting the transformational potential of design. Collaboration with local artisans and suppliers provided an authentic layer to the project, emphasising the superiority of Italian craftsmanship

Supporting the growth of the digital art space

- LEKKER GALLERY -

Lekker Gallery was established to fill the gap between digital display technology and digital art curation. We are a collaborative team of advisors and artists that curate, create, and implement digital storytelling for global clients.

We work with clients, interior designers, and architects to deliver inspiring digital solutions that enhance the brand experience. We believe that art curation is not just about filling up blank walls with digital screens; it’s about making thoughtful art selections that tell the unique story behind every space.

The intersection of physical spaces and digital art has opened up innovative channels for creativity, engagement, and expression. As digital art has evolved, it has transformed traditional perceptions of art, merging the tangible and intangible realms into a cohesive experience. Digital art is being embraced by innovative properties where it adds value to the guest experience.

These methods not only beautify the landscape but also most importantly make art accessible to a broader audience, breaking down conventional barriers. The integration of QR codes and smartphone apps further allows audiences to engage with the art through their devices, enriching their experience with additional context, animations, or audio elements.

The relationship between physical spaces and digital art also poses unique challenges and opportunities for artists. While the ephemeral nature of digital creations can raise questions about permanence and collectability, it also encourages experimentation and innovation, as artists can rapidly iterate on their work. For example, site-specific installations can be designed to interact with the unique characteristics of a space, transforming how we experience both the artwork and the environment.

In this dynamic landscape, physical spaces continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse around digital art. They serve as galleries, backdrops, and interactive elements, fostering a dialogue that challenges traditional boundaries and encourages innovative approaches to experiencing, producing, and understanding art in the 21st century.

With over 25 years of experience within the display technology sector and 5 years working with digital artists, Lekker Gallery is uniquely positioned to support your ambitions. Whether you are looking for digital art to include on the in-room TV or a spectacularly large LED display in the hotel lobby, we will curate the appropriate solution.

An Oasis in the Sky

- SELVA RESTAURANT -

EL EQUIPO CREATIVO has completed the interior design of Selva Restaurant in Amsterdam. Located on the 24th floor of the Nhow Hotel, Selva Restaurant offers Latin American cuisine with a tropical twist. The restaurant’s design blends organic shapes, natural materials, and vibrant colors to create a lush and exotic experience. Additionally, sharing the same floor, but in separate spaces, the Sonora Cocktail Bar complements the experience with bold tropical cocktails.

Starting point

The initial space felt cold and industrial, enclosed by a striking floor-to-ceiling glass façade designed by the architectural team OMA, led by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. It boasted spectacular views of Amsterdam’s outskirts, filled with highways and new constructions, making the view of the city the main focus. One of the primary challenges was transforming this space into a warm, jungle-like environment that contrasted with the city’s hardness.

A forestial design proposal

Set against a green backdrop, with organic-inspired flooring and abundant vegetation, the firm incorporated textured wooden elements with flowing shapes that serve as benches and dividers. These elements evoke a forest-like atmosphere, adding warmth and creating inviting paths that soften the space.

Upon entering beneath a vibrant, plant-filled ceiling, guests are greeted by a suspended, reflective element resembling a tropical river, surrounded by sparkling glass lamps and lush vegetation.

Reflective finishes in metal, glass, and ceramics enhance the rainforest ambiance, complemented by the building’s glass façade.

Vibrant colours, inspired by tropical fruits and birds, add energy through furniture and the bar’s undulating front, covered in colourful tiles reminiscent of Latin American textiles. The grand bar extends throughout the space, energizing the room with its lively activity, drinks area, and open kitchen.

The floor-to-ceiling glass façade is partially covered with wicker, rope, and wood panels, filtering sunlight like leaves and creating cozy shadows.

Selva Restaurant immerses guests in a lush, vibrant environment with stunning views of Amsterdam.

Party of two Residence

- MXMA ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN + PATRICK ST-ONGE HABITAT -

MXMA Architecture & Design and Patrick St-Onge Habitat are delighted to unveil their latest project, Party of two, a residence distinguished by a design that marries the warm intimacy of traditional wooden chalets with the elegance of modernist lines. Located on the ninth floor of the former Northern Electric plant on the banks of the Lachine Canal, the apartment offers spectacular panoramic views of Mount Royal and downtown Montreal.

Designed for Dan and Jay, a Toronto couple who like to escape to Montreal, this apartment was conceived as an urban chalet. It was born from the fusion of two apartments into a generous 2640 sq. ft. space. Every detail was carefully thought out to reflect the lifestyle of the owners, who are passionate about design, gastronomy and music.

Each element was designed to meet the specific needs of the owners, while maximizing the potential of the space », explains Maxime Moreau, principal architect at MXMA Architecture & Design. « From the kitchen, the domain of Jay, a food enthusiast, to the music room, a space dedicated to Dan, an inveterate music lover, the Party of Two Residence is arranged to enrich the sensory experience. »

Tour d’horizon

Already owners of a corner apartment in the former factory, the couple seized the opportunity to acquire the adjoining unit to create a vast living space for a unique, immersive visual experience. This fusion created a light-filled apartment, open on three facades, offering a spectacular 180-degree panorama of the city. The residence’s east-west orientation is ideal for creating a space that evolves with the rhythm of the sun, from morning to night, adapting to the couple’s lifestyle.

The heart of the residence consists of a central volume designed to group all service spaces. Living and reception areas are arranged around this functional core, preserving the fluidity of the space while maximizing the enjoyment of the panorama. By concentrating technical and service elements in this central volume, the architects have freed up the living areas in front of the large bay windows,

allowing each room to take full advantage of natural light and the horizon.

The functional core, a dark wooden box, generates a vibrant play of chiaroscuro. The contrast between natural light and shadows creates a dynamic atmosphere in every space. This volume, integrated into the interior architecture, becomes a design object in its own right. Cleverly placed openings reveal perspectives that highlight striking views of skyscraper silhouettes, with Mount Royal in the background.

The art of living

From the entrance, the contrast is striking between the subdued atmosphere of the vestibule, a veritable wooden cocoon, and the bath of light that floods the living spaces. Leaving the vestibule, you’re immediately directed to a first living room with a minimalist design that invites you to relax. At the center of the room sits the Mjolk Arm sofa, combining clean lines and comfort, flanked by two OMA speakers, veritable objets d’art. Sound-absorbing wood-textured walls and ceilings create a soothing atmosphere.

This is followed by a vast dining room that links naturally to the kitchen. The centerpiece of the residence, the kitchen allows the couple to prepare meals while exchanging ideas with their guests. It unfolds along two large islands, which delimit clearly defined work areas. The kitchen’s sleek modules cleverly conceal a multitude of practical details, clever storage and functional spaces, including the plumbing columns for the apartments above, which represented a challenge in the project’s realization. This design contributes to optimal ergonomics, allowing the couple to cook with ease, enjoying a fluid and functional space.

With the dining room on one side and a dinette table extending the large island on the other, the kitchen is surrounded by gathering areas. This layout reinforces the apartment’s warm, convivial spirit, encouraging exchanges and moments of sharing », adds Laure Gaillard, architect and project manager.

To the east, the music room and bar form welcoming, multi-purpose reception areas, creating the ideal setting for lively conversation or moments of peaceful contemplation. The music lounge is a sanctuary where every element, from furniture to acoustics, has been carefully considered to offer a unique acoustic and

visual experience. Sspeakers have been positioned to provide exceptional listening, while the orientation and composition of Roche Bobois’ mythical Mah Jong sofa maximizes comfort and contemplation of views of the Montreal skyline.

The owners have each chosen to have their own suite. True havens of peace, the bedrooms blend harmoniously into the apartment’s design. Located on the east and west sides respectively, these sanctuaries offer a soothing refuge, bathed in natural light and perfectly adapted to each individual’s lifestyle and tastes. Jay’s suite evokes the image of a simple yet sophisticated bachelor pad, with a bathroom designed around the concept of a “prison chic” with raw materials. Dan’s suite reveals a gentle atmosphere, incorporating the lines and details of the mid-century modern style that characterizes the entire apartment.

Sensory experience

The harmony of materials plays a central role in the creation of this residence, a true reflection of the owners’ art of living. Each material has been meticulously selected for its beauty, functionality and ability to enhance the sensory experience of the apartment spaces.

While exploring various wood species, the owners were seduced by smoked eucalyptus. This wood, distinguished by its warm nuances and distinctive grain, became the common thread running through the visual narrative of the project’s materiality.

Fascinated by the mid-century modern style, the owners naturally opted for terrazzo flooring, with its delicate patterns and sophisticated nuances. Terrazzo enhances the refinement of the materials in the apartment, while the wooden ceilings add an enveloping warmth, reinforcing the comfort and intimacy of the space.

Green marble followed, bringing a touch of sophistication to the kitchen, bar, powder room and Dan’s suite, while recalling the post-war modernist aesthetic. These materials, reflecting the owners’ tastes, fit perfectly with the creation of a space that is both contemporary and timeless.

In this project, we wanted to create a precious object: an apartment with a strong visual impact and a unique design that perfectly embodies Dan and Jay’s bold tastes », says Maxime Moreau.

A harmony of details

Many details have been carefully orchestrated to reinforce the residence’s unique narrative. They embellish everyday life and underline the importance of thoughtful, sustainable design.

The wooden ceiling, combining aesthetics and functionality, provides a pleasant acoustic atmosphere. Equipped with an absorbent acoustic felt, an essential component of sound balance, it attenuates reverberation on harder surfaces such as marble and terrazzo. This judicious choice preserves the elegance and refinement of the design.

The laser-cut radiator covers match the stone chips of the terrazzo floor. Electrical outlets by Bocci, discreetly integrated into the marble, add a further touch of sophistication. Lighting fixtures by Iguzzini are integrated between the wooden ceiling slats and blend discreetly into the shelves, creating refined lighting ambiances. Custom-designed wooden screens in eucalyptus ensure subtle privacy between bedrooms and bathrooms, while taking advantage of natural light. Delicate touches of marble in the study, bedrooms and bookcases echo the apartment’s main material.

In this complete renovation, every element was carefully custom-designed to ensure overall harmony. The composition of the spaces and the choice of materials create a real art of living. This approach allows the couple to evolve in an environment where every detail is part of a quest for balance between comfort, functionality and aesthetics », concludes Laure Gaillard. www.mxma.ca

Design is about creating experiences

- NINA HELLFRITZ-LANGE ON ALISEO’S VISION -

design is far more than aesthetics. “It’s about creating experiences that speak to people,” she says, reflecting on Aliseo’s approach to hotel accessories. “Our products are crafted not just to complement a space, but to elevate the guest experience in a meaningful way.”

This philosophy has guided Aliseo for decades, as the company has built its reputation on producing innovative, high-quality accessories that blend functionality with striking design. Whether it’s a sleek hairdryer, a stylish magnifying mirror, or elegant leather accessories, each piece is designed to enhance both the visual appeal and the practical use of a hotel room. The emphasis is always on how the right detail can transform an ordinary stay into an extraordinary one.

As the trend toward personalization in hospitality grows, Aliseo is pushing the boundaries of customization. “We’ve noticed a shift in what our clients want,” Hellfritz-Lange explains. “Hoteliers and designers are looking for products that not only perform well but also offer opportunities for creative expression. Colour, materials, finishes—these elements allow for a more bespoke approach to design.”

Recent projects showcase the trust prestigious hotels place in Aliseo. The company is proud to have contributed to the Four Seasons on Mykonos and Corinthia Rome, both set to open in 2025, as well

as Peninsula London and Six Senses London. These collaborations emphasize Aliseo’s ability to cater to luxury properties that demand the highest standards in both design and functionality.

Aliseo’s products are not only visually appealing but are also built for exceptional quality and maximum product lifespan. “We know that hoteliers need durable, high-performance accessories that maintain their premium look over time,” says Hellfritz-Lange. “Our products are designed with this longevity in mind, ensuring that they meet the rigorous demands of daily hotel use.”

It’s this commitment to bespoke solutions and quality that Aliseo will be showcasing at the upcoming HIX London trade fair in November, where the company will make its debut at Booth A11. Here, Aliseo will unveil a range of products specifically designed for customization, with a focus on special colours - a critical consideration for the architects and interior designers attending the event.

The Ropemaker: A Charming Coastal Retreat in Emsworth Redesigned by Heartwood Collection’s Inge Watrobski

- INDUSTVILLE -

Nestled in the heart of Emsworth, the newly opened pub and rooms, The Ropemaker, is quickly becoming a favourite destination for both locals and visitors. This historic space, recently transformed by the Heartwood Collection design team in collaboration with Concorde BGW and lighting partner Industville, opened its doors at the end of July 2024, unveiling a modern yet nostalgic atmosphere.

With 43 beautifully refurbished rooms, The Ropemaker combines the best of a modern pub with the allure of a coastal escape. Head of Design for Heartwood Collection, Inge Watrobski’s vision was centred on creating a space that evokes the charm of the seaside and village while maintaining a warm, contemporary atmosphere. “Emsworth is a relaxed, friendly place for all, so we needed to reflect this in the design and capture the spirit of the village,” Watrobski explains. “Our vision was to foster a welcoming environment using authentic textures, quality fittings, and patterns reminiscent of the sea. The colour palette was inspired by the grey-blue waters, sedge-green grasses, and the vibrant corals and terracottas of beach stones and shells - you can come in with sandy feet and still feel at home.”

A key element in the transformation of The Ropemaker was the lighting, designed in partnership with Industville, known for their expert craftsmanship and timeless materials. “Lighting was crucial to bringing the space to life,” says Watrobski. “One of the main challenges we faced was the balance between maintaining the openness of the pub’s central bar and creating intimate zones for guests. We didn’t want too many pendants obstructing the view over the bar and into the garden, so we carefully placed wall lights and used feature pendants to zone the seating, creating smaller, cosier spaces within the larger area.”

The lighting design was further enhanced by the use of smart controls, allowing for dynamic ambiance adjustments throughout the day. “We made use of smart controls on multiple zones, so all of our ceiling lights, side lamps, wall lights, and feature pendants can be individually controlled,” Watrobski explains. “This ensures that the atmosphere can be perfectly tailored to the time of day or season without sacrificing necessary task lighting.”

In the private dining room, which boasts floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows, the lighting became especially important. “With large windows flooding the space with light during the day, we needed to ensure the room still felt grounded,” she notes. “The Industville pendants helped lower the ceiling visually, providing a balance and anchoring the space, especially in the evening when pools of light make the room feel warm and intimate.”

Throughout The Ropemaker, the lighting materials were chosen to enhance the overall coastal aesthetic. “We used brass Industville pendants, reminiscent of a traditional Captain’s cabin, which subtly nods to Emsworth’s maritime heritage. In our outdoor heated dining huts, smaller versions of these brass pendants echo the design elements inside the main dining room, creating a cohesive experience,” says Watrobski.

Industville’s craftsmanship was key to the success of the project, providing not only aesthetic beauty but also durability. “Their design and quality of materials are outstanding,” Watrobski adds. “For us, the durability and expert craftsmanship were essential considerations.”

The transformation of The Ropemaker into a welcoming and stylish retreat is already proving a hit with guests. With the perfect balance of coastal charm, contemporary design, and thoughtful lighting, this new pub and rooms in Emsworth is set to become a go-to destination for locals and tourists alike.

Save Time and Resource, and Improve Hygiene

Hospitality settings are multi-use, they are used for relaxing, socialising, working and eating. Because of their multiple use cases, they can also be tricky places to keep clean. But you don’t have to compromise between serving guests and keeping their spaces clean. Using industryleading practices, and utilising the best hygiene solutions at your disposal, efficient cleaning creates more time for great service.

One challenge hospitality settings face is the number of cleaning stations, washrooms and bedrooms that staff must maintain. It’s therefore no surprise that 71 per cent* of cleaners wish their systems were easier to refill. The new compressed Tork Xpress ® multifold hand towels increase efficiency with compressed refills allowing the dispensers to hold up to 50 per cent more towels**, meaning they can serve twice the number of guests before refilling. In addition, compression reduces packaging by up to 27 per cent*** – meaning more towels can fit on a shipment, and less packaging is thrown away. Once used, Tork Xpress Hand Towels can be recycled with Tork PaperCircle ®, the world’s first paper hand towel recycling service – helping businesses to go circular by collecting and recycling used paper hand towels into new tissue products – and turning waste into resources.

Ted Todd floor enhances awardwinning restaurant

TED TODD -

When Tom Barnes, a celebrated chef and former Simon Rogan alumnus embarked on the journey to open his debut solo restaurant, Skof, his goal was to create an unpretentious yet ambitious dining experience, showcasing dishes that are deceptively simple yet brimming with technique and flavour.

The aim was to transform an industrial space into a restaurant that pays homage to its historical context while offering a unique dining experience characterised by humble simplicity and a warm atmosphere.

The Grade II listed Edwardian Baroque Hanover building, situated in the heart of the £800m NOMA scheme in Manchester, was selected as the perfect location.

Blacksheep — a London-based multi-disciplinary creative studio—skilfully translated Tom’s vision into an inspired and clever interior design, ensuring that the restaurant exuded the desired ambience and charm.

Blacksheep specified Ted Todd’s Bembridge floor due to its mid-brown rustic appeal and deep textures, which perfectly embody the authentic character of time-worn floors. Planed and distressed, and featuring broken edges that give it a reclaimed look full of personality, Bembridge is crafted from 20mm naturegrade European oak and offers a durable 6mm wear layer – perfect for high-traffic spaces.

The nature-grade Oak showcases a broad range of natural characteristics, including knots, sap, and colour variation, enhancing its rustic appeal. Finished with burnished hard wax oil, this floor provides a durable,

natural finish that not only offers maximum protection but also combines the charm of carefully restored original features with a refined, modern edge, making it an ideal choice for the Skof project.

In addition, the versatility of the Herringbone design allowed the designers to lay the floor in a block basket wave pattern, adding another layer of carefully chosen detail to the fabric of the design.

The interior design of Skof is a masterclass in industrial elegance. The restaurant features warm banquettes, exposed steel beams, and high ceilings in a spacious 250sq metre open-plan layout, accommodating 36 covers. The design blends contemporary elements with the building’s Edwardian Baroque architecture, creating a casual yet refined space with exposed brick, green and orange seating, and a pared-back aesthetic. The open kitchen allows diners to witness the artistry of the chefs, adding to the overall dining experience.

Skof has quickly gained popularity since its opening in June 2024, with bookings filled up until October and recently won the ‘One to Watch’ award at the 2024 National Restaurant Awards.

Cazcabel Tequila takes the top spot as no. 1 independently owned premium tequila outside north America and Mexico

- CAZCABEL -

The latest figures released by the IWSR* have recognised Cazcabel Tequila is the number one independently owned premium tequila outside north America and Mexico, with the highest growth rate achieved by an independent tequila brand over the past five years.

With a 188% CAGR achieved between 2019-2023, Cazcabel has achieved aggressive growth worldwide; now available in 50 markets worldwide, with recent launches in Taiwan and Singapore and launches into South Africa and China slated for Q4, where tequila sales grew by 40% last year.

This comes in addition to their growing presence in key European markets including Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Ireland and further afield in Australia.

Cazcabel’s sights are now set on accelerating their growth in the US, arguably the global tequila capital which accounts for 66% of global tequila volume, where the brand has been seeded in the on-trade for the past twelve months. The brand’s quality is already being recognised by bartenders and those in the industry, with Dimitrios Karagiannis, Beverage Director of Nerai restaurant in New York commenting,

“Cazcabel Blanco deserves a larger amount of hype, especially across the industry. Great quality and amazing value for a tequila that delivers on nose and palate with a spicy, citrus note and a touch of smokiness. Works perfect for cocktails.”**

Cazcabel has also expanded operations in its home state of Jalisco, Mexico with the transition to their new distillery which has increased production capacity and supports their ambition to accelerate growth even further globally.

This has supported their entrance into the Travel Retail channel this year, which accounts for 758,000 9L sales of Tequila globally. Cazcabel is now stocked in airports in Cyprus, Portugal, Dublin and the USA, via their partnership with Duty Free Global, with their Blanco and Reposado tequilas, as well as their Coffee Tequila liqueur available to travellers.

Cazcabel is a family produced, additive free tequila made with Blue Weber agave grown on Cazcabel’s family estate for a minimum of 6 years. Cazcabel focuses on growing quality agave that is bigger and with a higher yield than the average, meaning less land is required.

Glebe Farm Foods’ gluten-free PureOaty portfolio delivers on this promise, offering purity and certification to ensure peace of mind for hospitality providers and their customers alike.

Milled to a purity of under one part per million, significantly surpassing both the industry gluten-free standard and the European standard of <20ppm, Glebe Farm oats provide 100% reliability on the R5 ELISA test of <5ppm limit of sensitivity. It’s therefore no wonder our branded products carry Coeliac UK’s Crossed Grain symbol, a trademark recognised and used by the gluten free community across the world.

Glebe Farm’s PureOaty portfolio not only tastes delicious but also offers peace of mind to operators and customers thanks to its 100% gluten-free certification. We’re the only oat drink on the UK market to carry the Coeliac UK Crossed Grain symbol. We also have a great provenance story, being made from the 100% purest British oats and processed and packed on a Cambridgeshire farm.

Within our PureOaty range we also offer porridge oats and granolas, recently upgrading the recipes of our three Granola SKUs to offer even more flavour and crunch thanks to increased oat content in the Maple & Banana and Strawberry variants. Alongside the added benefit of being HFSS-compliant, the inclusion of vegan chocolate in Choco Chip Granola makes this indulgent variety also widely accessible. Each reformulated cereal is certified 100% vegan by the Vegan Society as well as being gluten-free, allowing everyone at the breakfast table to enjoy a bowl, no matter their lifestyle or dietary requirements.

It doesn’t stop there, our game-changing NPD PureOaty Tea-rrific – an oat milk designed especially for use in tea - is proven to deliver on taste whilst maintaining the high standards of purity we’ve become known for. Do Not Disturb: Steaming in Progress

- PROPRESS -

Does your hotel have Propress on its radar?

If not, it’s time to check Propress MINI, our handheld steamer, into your hotel. The Iron Age is over; there’s no need to clutter your guests’ storage space with a cumbersome iron and board.

Established in 1980, Propress is the original steaming brand supplying shops, soft furnishers, hotels, and resorts — removing creases in fabric wherever they appear. Our steamers are the highest-quality, longestlasting, and most reliable on the market.

In hotels, professional steamers have traditionally been used for housekeeping, banqueting and events, to provide a five-star freshening and anti-creasing touch to staff uniforms, curtains, tablecloths, and chair covers. (Steaming even kills bed bugs and their eggs almost immediately.)

Propress MINI can be used on a variety of clothing, from suits to dresses, and even delicate fabrics. It’s so versatile, it can be used vertically, for hanging fabric, or horizontally on bed linen and upholstery.

Guests often look to remove creases from clothes when unpacking or after a few days’ stay, especially those travelling for business or individuals attending events where wrinkle-free clothing is important.

Coupled with its ability to treat delicate materials, the Propress MINI is ready to go in just 45 seconds, making it a match made in heaven for wedding attendees. As the old saying goes: “Steam if you want to go faster!”

The Iron Age Is Over

• More wardrobe space without an ironing board

• Easier to use and more guest friendly

• Projects a contemporary image for your hotel

• Less damaging to clothes.

Keylite provides bespoke roof windows for landmark Amsterdam hotel

- KEYLITE -

Keylite Roof Windows (Keylite) aided with the major restoration of the five-star luxury Conservatorium hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands, by providing 263 non-standard conservation roof windows in bespoke sizes.

Adjacent to some of Amsterdam’s cultural hotspots, the Conservatorium hotel began as a former bank and soon after a music school. Now, it stands proud as one of the most beautifully designed hotels in Amsterdam, boasting 129 rooms and suites, six meeting and event venues, and a luxury wellness centre.

Sympathetically restored by award-winning Milanbased designer and architect Piero Lissoni, this spectacular building fuses simplicity and functionality, with contemporary updates including clean lines and elegant glasswork.

The high-profile restoration of this historic Amsterdam building into a luxury hotel required Keylite to work in close collaboration with the constructor Structon to manufacture and supply 263 specially designed roof window units in completely non-standard sizes ranging from 660x1500mm to 780x2000mm.

Mike Ensing, National Manager at Keylite Holland, said: “The Conservatorium is truly a fantastic hotel in the heart of Amsterdam. Originally a bank, the space at the top of the original building was closed and dark, and Lissoni’s vision was to allow natural light and fresh air in through large windows.

Adaptable underfloor heating technologies from Schlüter-Systems

Schlüter-Systems, a leader in tile installation products, offers advanced underfloor heating (UFH) solutions for modern applications: BEKOTEC-THERM, a hydronic system, and DITRA-HEAT E, an electric undertile heating system. BEKOTEC-THERM uses studded modular panels for fast installation, low build height, and rapid warm-up, making it ideal for time-sensitive renovations. This system enables tiling to begin soon after the screed hardens, thanks to the DITRA uncoupling mat, which prevents delays and is suitable for both homes and commercial spaces.

The DITRA-HEAT E system provides versatile electric heating, usable in floors, walls, mirrors, countertops, and even plant shelves. It’s popular in luxury locations, such as London’s Lanesborough Hotel and Langham’s, and was used in the Tower Suite of Richmond’s Petersham Hotel. Here, Schlüter-Systems installed a comprehensive waterproofing and UFH system, with Schlüter-KERDIBOARD tile backerboard and waterproofing elements like Schlüter-KERDI-KERECK and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL. In the shower, the Schlüter-DECO-SG profile securely accommodated a glass screen without compromising waterproofing. Additional features included a brushed stainless steel shelf and the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE linear drain in a CURVE design.

Tony Taylor-Sheriff, Schlüter’s Technical Specifications Consultant, noted that while UFH technology has advanced

greatly, challenges like uncoupling, load distribution, and vapor management persist in construction. Schlüter’s solutions aim to facilitate efficient, durable installations. BEKOTEC-THERM, for instance, is ideal for lowtemperature flow setups, compatible with heat pumps and other renewable sources. DITRA-HEAT E offers flexibility and rapid responsiveness.

To support architects and installers in expanding their knowledge of UFH systems, Schlüter-Systems offers a CPD seminar on specifying integrated UFH systems, available online or in person.

Deter dine and dash during the festive season

- CARDSSAFE -

To prevent customers from making off without paying this festive season, hold their bank cards securely while they run a tab with CardsSafe.

In 2018, a Barclaycard study found that 1 in 20 customers walked out without paying their food or drink tab, and in the current climate, the numbers are increasing. The hospitality industry has been plagued with dine-and-dash since the cost-of-living crisis and the pinch on everyone’s wallet. A few bad apples leaving a bar, pub, or restaurant without paying can cost the venue hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds every year.

The UK hospitality industry faces many challenges even during the lucrative festive season. Hospitality business managers shouldn’t worry about dineand-dash, either. Too many dine-and-dash cases are reported, but a simple, affordable solution exists. CardsSafe is a deterrent for walkouts because cards are securely stored in lockable units behind the bar.

CardsSafe is a proven and genuine deterrent for walkouts and chargebacks. It helps staff upsell and increases trust between the venue and customers. This is why big brands and independent venues utilise the system, including Young’s Pubs, Hilton Hotels, London Golf Club, Lord’s Cricket Ground, and many independent restaurants and bars.

Trond Rornes, Director of CardsSafe Ltd., told us. “We’ve experienced a significant increase in enquiries relating to dine-and-dash. Most recently, a chain restaurant business with 50 venues took on our CardsSafe system because of far too many cases of customers making off without payment. We offer a solution to a national problem.”

The wireless CardsSafe units can sit discreetly behind the bar and work alongside existing POS. In addition, the system does not capture data, so it never breaches GDPR. The tab-keeping system is straightforward to use, so it requires minimal training and helps venues and customers to ensure secure tab-keeping.

At just £9.95* + VAT per unit per month rental, CardsSafe really pays for itself.

x1 £120 dine & dash = CardsSafe unit rental cost for one year.

CardsSafe is cost-effective—it pays for itself. Just one £120 walkout or a chargeback is the cost of one unit with ten draws per year. In addition, each hire comes with customer service troubleshooting, free replacement keys, and additional units that can be added at any time.

The question is, can you afford not to have CardsSafe as a part of your business?
