Chapter 8 ended on March 1 2016 at the DOLLS launch show (continues in a bit). In March 2014 our situationist tale first uploaded (the picture on the opposite page is from Chapter 1). Our gigs are music socials where new friends and futures are made. TheZineUK’s live department (Rocklands) started out over a decade ago, described as “More DIY than B+Q” and “The CBGBs of SE14” by NME. This vibe is twisted into the 2020 vision we have NOW. In March 2016 we were still continually starting something new. The serendipity of uniqulture made #ArtBeatFest New Music Expo weave some new futures into the ether of our musical multiverse. With an expanded collective of allies, creatives, club regulars and supporters we’ve reached the next level. Welcome, to our “terrible twos”.

DOLLS at The Old Blue Last in London. It’s s no surprise that Jade n Bel are being snapped up for impressive line ups, because they are in an olympic throwing spearhead of emerging excitement. #FuturePicks the emerging BritRock is enjoying one of it’s most anthemic, confident and showy waves, in decades.

We fell in love with

The Ethical Debating Society who were also on the bill that night, too (pictured, Starlady, Tegan). Ferociously fantastic, they appear on the new Morning Star Newspaper CD compilation ‘Don’t Be Left Without Us’. The sisterhood/activism of Loud Women events, Clit Rock, the collectives/individuals, female scouts, tipsters & promoters of all back grounds, feminists of any gender/generation - all making the fact that it’s 2016 and people are still being labelled, feel backwards. This is uniqulture where we mainly focus on rocking into new futures.

“Music For All. Theatre For All”

Long distance zoom grainy pic, when ready made People’s Prime Minister, Jeremy Corbyn, came to Rocklands (#SELondon). The Zine had been blogging on his side since the leadership race began. Whatever your politics, respect for three decades of good work is due, at the very least. Jezza, mate, you’re loved by a lot of the people who are in this story, but you were a day early for the punky madness that happened along the road when Dead Belles invited Mourning Birds and The Scarletts to join them for single launch mayhem, with EditSelect on the decks, of ‘This Machine’s Electric’. Deptford Bunker was a seminal rock show moment, in the dark, so The Scarletts (next page), are the only snap shot of the night before the mosh pit by the end of Dead Belles set… Not to worry, we catch them again on Record Store Day, so read on.

By Friday 4th March, Chapter 008 had raised this picture story views/reads to 50,000 in its first week. It has become a case study for a strand of the underground music and arts world. Cover stars (images by Dan Donovan), deux furieuses are in the Music Week recommended releases with their 20th May DIY album 'Tracks Of Wire'. It is alarmingly vital and one of the rock classics of 2016. Fact.

A few days later, Zakk pops round to the tree house to return the projector that the band he sings/plays guitar with (recovered from their launch gig triumph on 4th March), Dead Belles had borrowed for the video of the (frankly awesome) This Machine’s Electric’). Since Chapter 007 (10/9/16) we stayed in touch. The ArtBeat of Uniqulture is an expanding family of exciters and inviters. Zakk was raving with infectious enthusiasm about a new band; M O S E S. A Soundcloud listen won them more new fans (us!) and an invitation to be part of a New Music Expo, ArtBeatFest (pix from April 2nd and 3rd are later in this issue). It’s the 2016 follow up to our #No3Expo of Chapter 006. Seeing as Mourning Birds recommended Dead Belles who, in turn, recommended M O S E S, perhaps we should ask the latter to tip further musical artists to weave into this tapestry, next? :)

Friday 18th March 2016 And, we’re back in the room. The Tooting Tramshed room, that is. John Kennedy’s monthly club, The Remedy has yet another amaze-bills line up. I arrive just in time to see The Buzzard Orchestral get roars, claps and hoots of approval at great decibels, as do all the bands tonight. As ever, loads of ArtBeat friends are down the front, including Yinka Oyewole of Sabatta and Resonance FM (who has now picked up a residency at The Birds Nest), Jean Genie introduces him to John, while it’s a relief to see my good friend Seymour, and his band, Horse Party, have made it from Bury St Edmunds just in time to get on stage, because their fully fantastic album, ‘Horizons’ MUST be heard live. They do not disappoint. If you don’t believe how fantastic home grown rock n roll is this year, ask John Kennedy. A find example, headliners, Trampolene, are noisily on fire AND excuding exhiliration. Sometimes you’ve just gotta laugh out loud when you are witnessing performances that belong on the stages of expensive festivals like Reading/Leeds and Bestival, let alone smaller independents they’re not gracing, and you are right up close for free. With bigger songs than The Brits TV show had, the small and medium venues are where the anti austerity aural sex is happening. Get in! (Caffy)

Thumbs up from Abbie McCarthy, Professor Green, Katy B & many admirers packing the Take Courage gallery before Slaves, no strangers to Amersham Arms (or TheZineUK for that matter), DJ after, with Phil Taggart of Radio 1. Ah, New Cross, never a dull moment.

Laurie Vincent’s Art Show x the #StageStyle of the exhibition’s audience, all over the gallery x Beats and Dancing after = one helluva night out at Amersham Arms, just before Slaves headed off for USA dates, then are set for another summer of festivals before Austin City Limits in Texas, which looks like an out of this world experience in October.

Staging a DIY, rock n roll mini fest with some of 2017’s finest ‘Ones To Watch’, artists united on stage in 2016? 1) Get excited (and pro-active) 2) Hang a vintage Manics poster on the wall of Amersham Arms (add some Poundland Star Wars wrapping paper for good measure). 3) Party on.

Inspiring, talented friends from the North and South of the land gather for the music social weekender in New Cross. On and off stage, artists and audiences unite for ArtBeatFest.

http://hyperurl.co/ArtBeatFest ArtBeatFest was for everybody who came. Lots of new friends and futures made this weekend through conversation. For instance, Jimmy of The Glass Collectors met Zakk from Dead Belles, got home and played the CD he was given and was blown away. Dead Belles couldn’t play this weekend, but Zakk was one of many musicians in support of the artists on stage and was responsible for M O S E S being part of it. Our DJ (and part of the Uniqulture road show from Day 1) Disco MarkY with Zakk Dodd of Dead Belles. A few weeks later; Mark was on the decks for the TOWIE TV series end of season party. Dead Belles were packing out an(other!) East End boozer, on Record Store Day, but we’ll get to that in a bit…

It was fun to catch up with our lovely Uniqulture road show compere, Helen of The Britpoppettes, where she had danced on stage with Mark Morriss a few years earlier, before she headed out back on tour with The Bluetones, again.

But just to say that this was a DIY, unsponsored event, organised largely by women and with friends involved in Clit Rock, Louder Women, #Women In Music etc - it was very much a #HeForShe affair from supporters of any gender. As mentioned earlier this issue, equality really is the future. It makes everybody who was here this weekend, in person or in spirit, feel that little bit extra special to this tale.

Saturday 9th April 2016. The weekend after ArtBeatFest decided to let somebody else be the organiser! Golden Cage Media do “proper night out”, free entry gigs at Traitors Gate and you can get there (Grays, Essex) with a London wide Oyster Travel Card.

The sky was so violently beautifully that we stood outside the station until the sun went down. It looked like another dimension was opening. It was. The next day we found out that this was Howard Marks’ last sunset. RIP Mr Nice.

Found an old photo of Howard Marks (with Kelly Jones) from when we went to Leicester and Manchester one weekend. He interviewed Stereophonics for a Loaded Magazine article. Mr Nice was so legendary - and full of magic - that it was one of those weekends which you later think you must have imagined. (Caffy)

Not major label marketing / straight to Ebay cynical hi-jacks of boosting record shops, but the energy, initiative and passion of three different / exciting rock bands with #RSD16 releases to celebrate live on stage. The Velvet Hands and The Isabelles played TheZineUK’s return to The Urban Bar a few days later, but this evening, Dead Belles were along the road, also in London E1, at the George Tavern celebrating and launching their ‘Black Cats And White Elephants’ debut EP. M O S E S opened in fine style.

Thursday 21st April 2016 TheZineUK music social in January was a WILD success, so we were chuffed to be invited back to The Urban Bar, Whitechapel, where The Velvet Hands, The Isabelles both (celebrating five star rated #RSD 16 releases, ‘Trains’ and ‘Permanent Rewind’ with special guest Matt Muré (and a lively crowd of friends) SMASHED IT. The formidable talents of Electric Owls Films were there to witness. We are honoured. The evening started with our disbelief at losing Prince. This is a year for channelling lost heroes, in their honour. Because our gigs exist in the real world of the modern music industry It ends with us being even more in love with the bands that come into our lives. Couldn’t stop grinning, even by the next day.

A debt of gratitude from TheZineUK to Mourning Birds for helping, greatly, to shape this story. Having played shows with us previously and in possession of huge new songs, we are big fans, so really happy that they are one of the bands that come back and get involved. Over the last few months, they worked on a load of fresh material which they revealed at ArtBeatFest (and, alongside the cheers, got a deal offer as they left the stage). I think that being given your own stage at a festival can really give others the opportunity to see what you are musically made of. For me, Tommy Kennedy IV has a dream line up at Portobello Live, with the mighty Pink Cigar headlining the Mau Mau Bar stage. I am no writer, and as such, my ability to effectively put in to words is somewhat diminished. Even so, the one good thing about being able to fan-boy/fan-girl follow gigs over a longer time line, with the bands that we do, is to see great leaps of development in their repertoire, performance and stage craft. Mourning Birds played to a thankful and receptive crowd and received some high praise from Tommy (and Portobello Live’s official photographer, Jeff Moh) which was well deserved. They band gave it 110% and it paid off. Heathy Junkies are London's answer to Hole. Their charismatic front woman completely lost herself in the moment, to great cheers for the whole set.Ming City Rockers incorporated immersive experiences, where, after their shit-hot set, they proceeded to each hand over their instruments to the crowd (one being me - for five seconds, I was a one chord rock star!). Pink Cigar, oh how we've missed you. You are the epitome of whats good in music, performanceand stage style. I don't know how this band manages to do it, but I can safely say that they are so great that, if these guys don't get major festival slots soon, then someone is going to have to kick the organisers down doors and kindly insist they add Pink Cigar to any and all line ups! They are a force of nature that cannot be contained, certainly on such a small stage as the Mau Mau Bar., we were priviliged to catch this performance. Any kind of reviewt that I could write would be cliched nonsense, when all I want to say is this band are genuinely next level rock stars.. And keep raising the bar. If the mainstream music industry is ignoring Pink Cigar, you know there's something wrong with the machine. With that, thank you Whiplash, Ed, Sam and Sid, you lot are the fucking bomb.
