Chapter 9¾ #Britz16 DIY MAGIC

Post war (pre war?) positivity. The heritage of 20th Century rhythm n blues x 50s Beat Poets x 60s summer of love n psychadelia x 70s punky reggae party’s grandchildren x 80s Raves n Synths x 90s Britpop’s offspring x Naughties Newer Wave have, over the last five years, especially, has created a braver new world.

DIY creative cottage industries, collectives and individuals supporting each other to the point of self sufficiency. We are in the eye of a positive storm in one dimension while living with Muggle Death Eaters stealing futures in another. Education and Escapism are our people powers now that we have evolved to the point of conscience and courtesy with a Grime x Punk x Art x Word soundtrack. Loud Women and Decolonisation Festivals are coming. Stay tuned.

#Britz16 celebrates artists forging fresh futures at a unique (and, frankly, surreal) year in cultural and political history, with an eruption of corruption waging war against the resilliance of their brilliance. Choose your own inspirations. It’s not a series. There is no #Britz17 for uniqulture.

This would have been Chapter10 cover. It’s crap. I know. I (Caf) was down at not having enough £ to buy new soap at Poundland. Didn’t sleep thinking about Vultures killing our united Cultures. Woke up to a radio documentary on ‘Upbeat’ The Iraqi National Youth Orchestra story. Am re-empowered by human magic… So now, this is just Chapter 9 ¾ with Chapter 10, real photographers and the positivity of DIYstopia to come. First, though, I can sleep now. Enjoy some pre Brexit funshine shots…

May 2016 The next level chapter of this non-computer non-game made with computers, begins. We ended the last chapter at Portobello Live Festival. The back page was of Sam Mitchell, drummer with Mourning Birds, who were supporting Pink Cigar at the Mau Mau Bar. It was a legendary day and Mourning Birds played the best show of their career. Inflicted by being a working class band in the Austerity Age, they were gutted to have to end their story this summer. We couldn’t have had our story without their brilliance (and accidental comedy). They started off as a rabble, grew into a star turn, and left one of the best classic British rock albums in their wake (achieving one and a half sales in Japan, by word of mouth, on the way). We wish them love and best luck whatever happens next. Better be out for beers again soon, tho! After the Portobello Festival hang overs had cleared up, more adventures awaited, as ever… Image: Lucie Barât of The Au Revoirs, The Great Escape Festival, Brighton 19th May.

Thursday 5th May . It’s no secret that we are huge fans of new rock n roll heroes, M O S E S, and will recommend them to anybody that will listen. The band were playing a free gig at The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch with the very cool Cortes. We met up with Jimmy from The Glass Collectors and gave another mate, Ethan, a call to come check them out. He came with his fellow Apeman Spaceman band mate, Carl and we all had a brilliant night out. That’s them on the opposite page). M O S E S had attracted a convention of music industry bigwigs, with more than one agreeing that there is definitely much happening underground. Bonus! Apeman Spaceman picked up a slot at Camden Rocks Festival while they were there. Way to go!

#StageStyle Thursday 12th May 2016 Underground Shoes Press Day

We are in shoe heaven today and in love with the punky, Underground Shoe DIY ethics and salute one of musical UK’s most essential footwear brands. Celebrating their #Punk40 presence with a Grime fanzine is just a fraction of what inspired our writer, Amelia Donovan, to remark;

“Underground’s got soul.”

Friday the 13th of May 2016 proved to be very lucky . Caught a fresh (and compelling) new musical presence, The Trap, at End Of The Trail Records night in the Amersham Arms. More about this band very much worthy of investigation to post punk alt pop fans, to follow, but it was a case of instant fandom.

The Following Weekend, TheZineUK was repping at The Great Escape Festival’s @AltEscape with End Of The Trail Records, and friends….

Annually, mid May, Europe’s biggest New Music Festival and Industry / Media convention, The Great Escape, happens in Brighton, UK. Having staged our own events in 2014 and 2015, we were super hyped to be part of End Of The Trail Records (buzzing n packed from doors open to doors shut) stage this year at the very CBGBs looking East Street Tap. The @AltEscape is the free entry, best new buzzes part of the weekend, where the early doors discovery magic happens.

Pictured, other page; Musicians on every street. We met Rob (in the checked red shirt helping his bands who were playing shows) at a fashion press day in the last chapter, with Paul of TryLife.TV - its a small (and wonderful) world. Pictured, on this page; Jack Price of The Lodgers, after their set.

Amazing @AltEscape artists from start to finish for End Of The Trail Stage, with there being such a fans and industry scrum at some points over the weekend that the crowd were spilling out into the street‌ This page; Ella Fence That page; SuperGlu

This page: Like Coquin Migale, who also played this year’s End Of The Trail Records Stage at The Great Escape Festival, a few months later SuperGlu were one of the bands headlining the BBC Introducing Stages at Leeds and Reading Festivals‌

Next page: DIY activists, and ArtBeat faves, The Au Revoirs, played a variety of music festivals over the summer and, at time of writing, are heading for a debut album.

Following the debut show as 485C at April’s ArtBeatFest, the band earned radio play from Steve Lamacq BBC 6Music before their appearance, here, at The Great Escape, just over a month later.

Keep a very keen eye and ear on The Lodgers. Mightily impressive.

Just along the road from End Of The Trail Records’ stage, Asylums are setting up to play another of The Great Escape’s key @AltEscape sets, previewing their debut album, ‘Killer Brain Waves’…

#TGE16 / May was an awesome adventure. As is 2016 . With Paul Draper of Mansun back in the charts, us catching The Manics on tour, and (next page), Radiohead, live on stage (also in the charts), our repeated insistence on guitars being back bigger than in ages, marks an important year for British music of all genres. It’s not just random ramblings. We’re living/loving it…

June 2016 Image: M O S E S went from last issue’s ArtBeatFest New Music Expo, to widespread interest rapidly and deservedly - but without losing the organic growth of the artists in uniqulture’s story. Here they are making (a lot of!) new friends at The Electric Ballroom during Camden Rocks Festival.

Friday June 3rd 2016

Essex based Grime shaker, Kirby-T, is being interviewed by Dizzy Spell in Central London. As per the situationism of our uniqulture road show, and Manic Street Preachers being weaved into every chapter of this story so far, James Dean Bradfield went past just after they’d finished a long and inspiring conversation, which made for a great read. Very kindly James sat with us for a while so that we could get a shot of two home grown talents together, which very much sums up #Britz16 : Grime x Rock n Roll In July, Kirby-T was at Brownstock Festival supporting Tinie Tempah and more. For all that he is doing for music, his good karma is working‌

Saturday 4th June 2016 : Camden Rocks Festival

An amazing day out at London’s biggest rock n roll party - this is just a fraction of the action from our day out.
