Last issue; Amy of Nova Twins and Claudia of Cat Bear Tree grace the front page. TheZineUK being helpful? (at the time, there was concern about the lack of female fronted bands at the major rock music festivals) or were we just reaction provoking? Either way, both bands have gone on to more, well deserved, attention since Polly Harvey of Polstar Photography snapped them a our No3Expo in Spring and we provoked sufficiently to viral across the media like defiant marmite. So then, what else since our June 2015 ArtBeat event completed that Chapter? Read on —>

—> If this was a computer game, most of us have made it to this, the next level. Last Chapter we went from the #No3Expo in Spring and our Art-a-Space Warehouse, to the seaside in Summer for #TheZineUK Sessions at The Great Escape Festival in May. We rounded things off in June, when we came home to Amersham Arms and the ArtBeat social with Gordon Raphael on the decks. It was the day after one of the band’s he’d produced, The Strokes, played Hyde Park. His review of that event, for us, caused reactions across Xfm Radio, Guardian, NME, various music/culture sites) as July began. That’s one way for us to introduce ourselves to a wider audience! Above, is an image of another artist that Gordon has produced, Ned Dylan (see further on in this chapter, for the lowdown on that new excitement!).
2016 is already properly, punk thanks to new inspirations and aspirations. #TheBritz are sure releasing huge sounds this year. The new soundtracks of our lives. Some of the instigators are in these pages. Without further ado, we begin Chapter 007 with a kiss up in a brewery…
The ArtBeat of Uniqulture calls into Camden Town Brewery on Sunday 19th July 2015. Jean Genie’s Massive Hugs and James Fisher played intimate sets amongst family and friends. We shared a bring your own Sunday Lunch Picnic and drank cold, fresh high quality, bespoke beer right where it was being made. A life affirming afternoon with our friends; photographers Polly Harvey and Rupert Hitchcox, musician, Phil Phamous of Rhiannon The Nightmare, our Fashion Director, Ben Dodd, our roadshow DJ, Disco MarkY, mover shaker Paul Maps of Joyzine and Kosmic Troubadour among many more lovelies.

Music, family and friends ruled this day. Rupert Hitchcox snapped me with my friend James Fisher (I was his manager when he played in underground rockers, Officer Kicks). I met fab Polly (pictured with Phil and Ben at their shows and it was “Seargent Wilko” of the Kicks Army who introduced me to the band, Trampolene, who not only got under my skin in the best possible way, but also feature further on in this chapter). We have all travelled to July 2015. This day bonded some favourite tunes and people. Ha ha! Michael Skorjanec of Officer Kicks was there too (the band’s family tree is a Sarf East London mad house of love) with the twins (whot were up Jo’s jumper first time I met her), trying to get their dad to get on stage and “play songs with Uncle Jamie!.” Ah, you gotta love Lazy Sunday Afternoons… (Caffy)
#TheBritz - Not quite TV show, “The Brits”, but just as full of contenders. Some crazy idea about celebrating the achievements of the poetic souls in the underground situationism we lived since Chapter 1 with #WildeLifeAwards as a working title. Would love to see Pink Cigar (below) on national telly,. More on them, further on, caught live on 25th September. At time of writing this they are just about to head to USA, Reverend & The Makers have DIY’d a massive album hit with ‘Mirrors’, and as the film ‘Invisible Britain’ is screened nationwide, some people are still in the recovery position after Sleaford Mods were on BBC2’s Later With Jools Holland! (pic opposite by Duncan Stafford). Our so called Prime Minister and his cronies jeered openly at the poor, sick and disabled on TV. Then, pix of the so called Mayor of London tackling a ten year old child to the ground while “playing” rugby are doing the rounds. I think people have got more to worry about than musicians, gateway to our escapisms…

This is Kat Five of the band, Feral Five at Music Tech Fest. She went to Music Tech Fest Sweden to present, hack and perform. Her recycled 3-string with electronic effects “sounded like ‘Seasick Steve on crack’ said Jon Eades of Abbey Road Studios.For Kitmonsters, Kat gave a talk at MTF on DIY Music Tech Culture, that featured #uniqulture artists You The Living. Since that trip she also filmed the first ever interview with the amazing Nova Twins (who graced No3Expo) Feral Five article continued over the page…

Feral Five launched their single ‘Neurotrash’ in June (featured in The Zine and on BBC 6 Music Recommends). The Flip X remix of the track has had radio play from Simon Raymonde and Eddy Temple-Morris. The Ferals have also created a ‘dynamite’ new remix of deux furieuses’ ‘Can We Talk About This’ which due, at time of writing for end of October deux furieuses remember; “We actually hatched the plan to have Feral Five remix our first single while drinking together at No3 Expo (after Little Death Machine & more) at Number3London in March. Something was in the air that night!”

We had our first experience of TGE 2015 ((The Great Escape, Europe’s largest new music fetival) in Brighton just around the time of our third single. We played in the afternoon at Bar Rogue, The Albion Hotel and afterwards Vas was shat on by a Brighton pigeon mid rant. Later we went to The Zine Sessions to see Bad For Lazarus who we had played with recently in London. They were fantastic as usual. We sat on the ground in the lane outside talking to other musicians and knew we were at the centre of the universe because that's how great music makes you feel.

Gordon Raphael, met with fellow artist Joe Whitney at the June 2015 Amersham Arms ArtBeat event (a live music social for creative trail blazers) via The Zine’s Arts Editor, Chenaii A. Madhoo. In Chapter 3 of #TheZineUK, Adam Foley was making a film. Probably the most DIY and punk way ever, by starting without having any equipment. A movie, Q+A and stripped down live T.A.M. set. Friends/fans came from all over the country/world and packed Amersham Arms. We ran out of chairs. There was so much high regard in the air that Ed Borrie of S*M*A*S*H and Julian/Boag of These Animal Men looked a little overwhelmed by so much love.

So then, rising music media stars, GigSlutz put on a pretty blooming’ marvellous live music night this summer at New Cross Inn. ThanX Paul Sng for sorting out tickets for the show. A snap shot of headliners, The Tapestry, bringing energetic noisy joy that night. Some of the audience had travelled a long way to catch this band play. There was a great energy and experience generated from the power of alternative power pop. New Cross demanded that GigSlutz come back and do it again, a.s.a.p. (they returned in September 2015, with the previously featured John McCullagh And The Escorts headlining the next show). In the mean time, increasingly in demand photographer, Duncan Stafford shot a session with The Tapestry, some of which is over the next pages. . .

Yet another instantlove band that Heather Minx Ferguson turned ears onto via the Playhard events. Investigate their video for ‘Infatuation’, a short film movie sound tracked superbly. It was a real treat to catch them playing a show within walking distance of home. Liam Gallagher and Gaz Coombes are also among their organically growing legions of fans. One of those bands you can investigate then go and enjoy live, because they tour often. Weave in…

Rhiannon The Nightmare on a Saturday Night in New Cross. Out of the blue Paul of Joyzine played ‘The London Scene’ by Twisted Charm just before, by coincidence, the projections (made on a last minute whim) featured them in New Cross a decade ago. Taken by Paul! This was all just before, by coincidence, Luke (ex Twisted Charm) arrived at the Amersham Arms with Rhiannon just in time not to be freaked out by our sinister supernature syncing. Incidentally, the video for ‘The London Scene’ video was made by Digital Sneakers/The Blaine Brothers. The latter’s horror film, ‘Nina Forever’ is, basically, winning 2015 festivals and media for the genre. Twisted Charm were one of the bands (alongside Bloc Party, Corporation:Blend, Art Brut, Chris T-T and more) in their music documents, ‘Rocklands Live In New Cross’, screened all over the place. There’s definitely a twisted charm to this tapestry that is still making scenes.

SoccerSixFest It’s a Sunday morning at Mile End Stadium. The Rock and Indie band teams are playing football early on. Probably after many a late night. Can NOT imagine many of them being wide awake yet, but its for good fun and good causes. Just as the bands made their way onto the pitches, we (myself, Caffy, and Ian from the venue, Traitor’s Gate) heard one of them asking his team mates; “have we got a goal keeper?” It was one of those days. LOVED it. This here is Team Joyzine

They met outside the venue just half an hour or so before that pic was taken. Imagine if this is how the back line share was sorted out at grass roots gigs! Today brought people of all ages together, informally mixing celebrity, music, sports, industry, fans, family and friends. Nice one, Heather Minx, for getting TheZineUK involved and to Ian from Golden Cage Media/Traitors Gate venue in Essex, for taking some pix on the day. Loadsa mates were out to play, on and off the pitch, raising awareness and funds for Anti Bullying Pro and Giving Kids A Break charities. London’s rock chicks were out in force at the VIP bar, and there was a really festive feel to the whole day. It had been raining all week and then the sun came out! Good work, Trampolene, who had played a gig in Glasgow the night before, travelled down for Soccer Six and were winners on the day. In the spirit of how our chapters entwine, a shared admiration for this band led to some back and forth tweets between Caffy of The Zine’s Events Department (repping at Soccer Six Rock), and Jane of Pirate Treasures jewellery before the match. Words can not express the clarity of the deconstructed then reconstructed, state of the art approach to sound that Flare Audio make, so read this; http://flareaudio.co.uk I feel that if a venue, cinema or studio has Flare Audio sound system installed, that information needs to be made public because this (bespoke 3D printed and space technology, audio passioned) system needs to be heard to be believed. Maybe one of the reasons that there was so much emotive reaction to the magnificence at this demo, was the number of poetic souls who were there. I met friends, old and new, that day. We got so excited that the audience didn’t want to leave. We eventually retired from the Olympic Studios cinema to the bar, and didn’t want to leave there either, to let off enthusing steam. Please turn the page, because one of those souls was, indeed a poet. Another legend weaves into our Uniqulture tale;

Friday 11th September 2015 started, early evening, at Tileyard Studios. A mini festival to celebrate 25 years of Music Industry big hitter, Key Production. Massive congratulations Karen and Co! Had to then dash across London to Charing Cross next for a one-off moment in musical time‌
An hour later I was in Heaven. In more ways than one. The next few hours would be both unreal and real surreal as first S*M*A*S*H then These Animal Men played live together under the railway arches of Charing Cross Station. Following on from the London event earlier in this issue, It was emotional and a little overwhelming (SO many beloved friends in one place) but above all, it did what a gig was supposed to do and was exciting as fuck‌

Everything seemed to come together this evening. Fans and friends came from all over the world, many of them also making marks on the music world in their own right, these days. Reviews know that this was one of the gigs of the year. In front of a packed crowd, bigger than most of their 90s shows, both bands created a landmark with this double bill created by a flawed and beautiful dream which was a documentary, lived, in its own right. Real. Surreal.

Tonight felt like “closure”.
Wait.What YEAR is this??? A week after the Flawed Is Beautiful event at Heaven, These Animal Men are in the Top 20. Music fans are some of the most amazing people on the planet. Flawed Is Beautiful page https://facebook.com/flawedisbeautiful for latest news on the film that spawned erm, a new wave of new wave of new wave. After Heaven, I found myself on a Boat Party on the Thames, in the early hours, with my friends The Earwax Brothers and The Queen Mom. Aargh, had to get up early the next morning. And talking about “what YEAR is this?”, another aaargh - had to see about a ticket for the Manics, who were playing up the road the next evening. Yes. Every chapter of TheZineUK has some MSP injected. What of it? Hallo 1990s! It’s official, I am a Time Lady / Time Lord! (big hugs/thanks to our Gillian!)

“The food-festival line up looks like a hip indie band name generator.” A dear friend of mine made this observation as we sipped chilli beer on the roof bar of the Amersham Arms that afternoon. Clumpy, deep, cloud porn Castles flew over us slowly like space ships. He was talking about On Blackheath Festival. I was going there as soon as I could get my arse in gear to stop chatting and giggling. Between leaving this haven to get the bus up the hill, I bumped into Damo of Antlered Man. We probably first met at this venue years ago. I didn’t tell him that his ace band are part of the #WildeLifeAwards started this year, for next. We just hugged and caught up for a bit, but I know that the stars are aligning… And, oh, that chilli beer!

That dear friend was musician, and front man of the band, Sweetheart Contract,
Dexy He was doing a photo session in the back room (TARDIS) bar and roof top bar of Amersham Arms with the very talented Hannah Goodwin and Donna Allsop who it was a pleasure to hang out with as the evening’s hangover faded away. Refreshingly, not only was Dexy enjoying getting some new images before he returns to play USA at the end of the year, but saying so.
“Literally just having actual, real life, fun.” That warmed the cockles of my heart (as did drinking the whole chilli in the bottle of beer).
A short number 53 bus ride from Amersham Arms (where the Heavenly DJs / This Feeling DJs and more would be shaking up the festival after-party later, On Blackheath is in full swing for it’s second year. The sun is setting, the bar is calling and The Manics are just about to go on.
“Do you remember when people had their girlfriends on their shoulders at gigs?” remarked a lovely friend, adding, “now it’s their children”. A Manic Street Preachers gig? That’s what I call a good upbringing.

And talking about Manic Street Preaching. Do NOT try to shut up the youth of today. They are all our future, and now, with added inspiring political power up their sleeves. Meet Punk Poet Musician, Ned Dylan (photography by Andrew Loveridge). From a live video enticing my interest last year, and twitter messages since then, (Ned is personable and just real, intent,intense - a career awaits), I’ve been keeping an eye and ear out. How ACE that our stories weave, again and Gordon Raphael produces his first single, ‘Disco’, this Autumn. It is a sharp slice of bright and in your face articulate adrenaline rush. A punk rap stream of conciousness. Deservedly, it is being well received, with great media support including Jim Gellatly - incidentally one of the Manics’ first supporters - playing it like mad on his Amazing Radio show. It just feels like this is Ned he was born to do.. He is a real go getter. Including his choice of producer.
"I'm so glad Ned Dylan called me to produce his record! The two days we spent together were priceless, his lyrics are seriously challenging and a bit revolutionary and I love working with people who have much to say. The fact that he interviewed Patti Smith when he was 11, and has been playing festival gigs since then too, well that is purely outstanding".

There is a rare passion (and a good scouting instinct) which goes into booking the bills, that magnetise an audience. You can’t manufacture a movement that takes on legs of its own. There has already been an all dayer mini fest at Traitors Gate. ‘The Last Stop’ (i.e. Of the London Oyster Travel Card). In this age of bands hardly being able to afford to exist, let alone anything else, the bill (headline and support) are paid. Entrance is free so that a healthy crowd of music fans can aafford to catch artists, tipped in various quarters, personally on a Proper night out. Win win thinking. The Underclass - ace, full on, and they put the packed crowd in a festive mood. Their anthem “It’s All England”, sums up the age we try to live in. Their set and mind-set is anything but dull. All hell breaks out for the next band and it’s heavenly. There hasn’t been a stadium potential punk band, but everybody knows we’re seeing one, and freaks. In the best possible way. Beyond bluesy rock chaos and furious energy there is substance; Polished performance, great songs, musicality. The debut album, “We're Gonna Get You out of Here” has done them no end of favours, grabbing reviews spluttering with praise and has also gone Top 20 in Germany. In short, Pink Cigar are already underground stars. If any band deserved to become well known, here are all the (hard earned) ingredients. Now they have a triple album label deal (Madtone Records) and are recording at Mick Jones of The Clash/Rotten Hill Gang’s studio Tonight is a free entry, local Friday night mosh with friends. Such a knees up that it’s almost tits out. The aural equivalent of a glam bullet, Pink Cigar are an antidote to what passes for life in these lunatic ruled times. Culture alienation, boredom and despair fuelled 20th century punk. The current disunited queendom feels like it could explode all over again with fresh influences and inspirations. I feel all this radiating around the room with a massive grin on me chops, as per every Pink Cigar gig so far. Treat yourself. Investigate. Caffy St Luce.
Friday October 9th 2015 - John Lennon would have been 75 today. Imagine. It’s the End Of The Trail Record Label showcase in London and, as ever, sparky and lively. A variety show of genres and styles with guitars, and early interest from fans and media alike, in common. Talent. Potential. Imagination.
Managed to round up (most of ) Flash Fires after their impressive set. The band have had a pretty fantastic year, including various live appearances for BBC Introducing. Tonight is also the the London debut of voodoo art punk duo, The Soap Girls The audience are warned; “This show is not for the faint hearted”. They’re not kidding, but they also make some instant new fans with articulate politics in their performance, and, importantly, hooky rock songs.
It would be fair to say that The Soap Girls made a distinct impression, (the night before there was live rock n roll n wrestling in the same venue!) which anybody who was there will not forget.
Over that second weekend of October 2015,

The previous weekend, the Tory conference had required a “ring of steel� security to protect the ham fancying Prime-cut Minister of Britain, by now known as Hameron. At the same time, in the same city, a Jeremy Corbyn rally with Super Furry Animals and Charlotte Church was attended by between 7-10,000 every day people. It made sense that during the 10th and 11th of October, many more of the UK (and beyond) every day people came together to PLAY.
