TODAY, CHAMONIX IS BEST KNOWN FOR ITS SKIING AND HILL-WALKING OPPORTUNITIES. EARLY HISTORY The first recorded mention of Chamonix comes from the year 1091, when the Benedictine house of St. Michel de la Cluse was granted the land by the Count of Genevois. A priory was established there by the turn of the 13th century. Two fairs a year were held at Chamonix from 1530, but travellers were not widely known in the area. The inhabitants of the region purchased their freedom in 1786.
THE GROWTH OF TOURISM Chamonix first began to be mentioned by foreigners who had visited the area in the mid-18th century. Tourism in the area only really began to take off in the 19th century, with the industry becoming dominated by initiatives coming from national and international sources towards the end of the century. In 1924 the valley played host to the Winter Olympic Games, thus cementing its place as a popular tourist destination.
