DIGITAL: DEFINING BIG DATA Big data is a term we hear a lot these days, particularly when talking about technological advances, but what does it really mean?

Digital: Defining Big Data In the broadest sense, the term big data refers to all data that a business is inundated with daily, which equates to a huge volume. More precisely, big data encompasses all of the data that cannot easily be processed using traditional computing as it is too complex, fast or large.

Storage Technological advances that have massively increased the storage capacity of servers and other machines have created a situation where businesses are able to collect and store more data than ever before, from multiple sources including industrial equipment, smart devices, business transactions, and social media platforms.

Velocity New technology also makes it possible for the data collected by businesses to be streamed in and analysed at a high velocity, in many cases at or close to real time, facilitating advanced decision-making capability.

Format The same technology allows businesses to collate data in almost any format, ranging from traditional databases to more advanced unstructured information.

Big data is often referred to when discussing artificial intelligence. Thibaut De Roux
