t’s thought to be a cerebral game that’s suited for ‘geniuses’, but the reality is that just about anyone can learn how to play. Many high-level players didn’t start as intelligent players, which means that over time various mental faculties can be developed.

PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS At its core, chess is about solving increasingly complex puzzles and problems. As players develop their playing abilities, they’re also growing their problem-solving skills through the constant planning and re-strategising required throughout the game.

IMPROVED MEMORY Early in their playing career, chess players need to memorise a lot of rules and moves that help them acclimate to the game. Players also need to recognise opponents’ moves and remember which ones work best against various styles. It’s a lot to take in at first, but serious players will improve their memory as they continue to play.

CREATIVE THINKING Creative thinking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when chess is discussed, but in reality, the game does require players to think creatively. It provides the brain with more opportunities to think of new solutions and implement them.
