GENETIC TESTING FOR AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS Familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis accounts for around 10% of diagnosed cases of ALS. In these cases, at least one other family member has been diagnosed with the condition.

Genetic Testing for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis In families where there is more than one person diagnosed, or where a family member was diagnosed prior to the age of about 45, people may wish to consider genetic testing.

GENETIC TESTING FOR FALS IS MOST USEFUL WHEN A PERSON WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN DIAGNOSED WITHIN THE FAMILY CAN BE TESTED. GENETIC COUNSELLING A genetic counsellor will be able to help individuals considering genetic testing for ALS to determine if this is the right path for them. The counsellor will take details of the family and medical history, evaluate potential risks, and discuss how genetic testing may impact the individual. They can also help with working through the pros and cons to reach a decision regarding testing.

GENETIC TESTING Genetic testing for FALS is most useful when a person who has already been diagnosed within the family can be tested. The doctors can determine if there is a genetic mutation as the underlying cause. If this is the case, other members of the family can then be tested to see if they carry that mutation.
