THE FINAL CRITERION IS A FIDE RATING OF AT LEAST 2,500 IN ADDITION TO THE NORM TOURNAMENT SCORING. START YOUNG It takes thousands of hours to become an expert at anything and chess, with all its complexities, may take even longer. The best time to start learning is between the ages of five and eight, when the brain is most absorbent for learning.
WORK HARD If grandmaster is the goal, then a solid practice schedule is required. Hard work and daily study can set the foundations.
PLAY TOURNAMENTS Tournament play provides invaluable experience and a chance to put learned skills into practice, as well as learn from losses and mistakes.
SCORE THREE NORMS One of the criteria for becoming known as a grandmaster is scoring three norms, which involves scoring highly in three norm tournaments.
ACHIEVE THE FIDE RATING The final criterion is a FIDE rating of at least 2,500 in addition to the norm tournament scoring.
