Ask Annie Cosmo’s Agony Aunt, Annie Marriott, responds to questions about your problems and gives her frank and honest advice on life, love, sex and relationships. 1

Why do I attract bad friends? Five years ago, my ‘best friend’ tried to break up my relationship by lying to my boyfriend about me. Thankfully, he didn’t believe her, but he said he thought she put me down and bullied me. Since then I’ve felt dominated and badly treated by my other mates. Some have even flirted with my man. Why do I attract bad friends? Rachel We can’t choose our families or workmates, and romantic love has a chemical element that affects our judgment. Only our friendships are 100% up to us. Why are you so unsure of yourself that you choose bossy women to call friends? Know yourself before you commit to friendship. Start something new, like an evening class, so you meet people with shared interests. One other thought: by perhaps encouraging flirtation, could your boyfriend be dominating you a little himself?

2

I hate being the new boy Last month I started a great new job but I’m being treated with real hostility by my colleagues. They watch me all the time and talk about me behind my back. Should I talk to my boss about it? Peter Nothing prepares you for the most difficult aspect of a new job: being new! You come into an established

group and they don’t know if or how you will change the balance of power. Will you pull your own weight or need support? Will you put your colleagues to shame with your talents? Will you gossip, and if you do, will it be to the boss or about them? The new boy often tries too hard, throwing his weight around before he’s found his feet. So, for example, even when

‘The new boy often tries too hard...’ you know a better way of doing something, keep it to yourself at first. Ask old hands about aspects of the job – you don’t have to take their advice, just listen. Try to see these early weeks as a time when you must slowly prove that you are not a threat but a genuine workmate.

My holiday romance has changed me I met a wonderful man on holiday last year. We became very close and I didn’t want to go home. Now we have a long-distance relationship; we speak every day and promise to stay faithful until we meet again. But since I got back I don’t feel the same about family, friends or work. My life back home doesn’t make me happy any more and I feel trapped. What’s going on? Joyce The easy explanation is you fell in love and transplanted your heart to another country. I think the cause of your pain is more complex. You have glimpsed a new world of possibilities, of which your holiday romance is just one part. Please do not pin all your dreams on your faraway love alone. Start learning a new language. Look around for ways to combine work and travel; qualify yourself for a job abroad.

4

He says I’m childish I’m 20 and had been seeing Jamie for a few months. Things were going really well until I found out he’d been saying behind my back that I was childish. I finished with him and got back with my ex, Paul, who I’m still crazy about. Then Jamie sent me a text, saying he still loves me. Something tells me not to go there, but I think I love him. Do I stick with Paul? Or go back? Irma Whatever else he is, Jamie is certainly right about one thing: you are childish. Give yourself a chance to grow up. You have to know yourself better before you can hope to know someone else enough to love him. Back off from both men who are confusing you right now, and take time to sort yourself out. Learn the ropes of a relationship before you start tying knots. Otherwise, you could just drift from man to man, trying to convince yourself that it’s love.

Noisy neighbours cause misery for millions Lotto lout Michael Carroll made his neighbours’ lives a misery with all-night parties after moving into Swaffham, Norfolk 1

Daily Mail A third of people in England admit to being noisy neighbours, according to environmental campaigners. 5

10

15

The culprits confess to playing loud music, letting their dogs bark all day and arguing at the top of their voices. And many of these noise makers have been putting the people who live around them through this misery for over a year. However, a new campaign suggests several ways of dealing with the problem of noisy neighbours, including talking before the situation spirals out of control. The Noise Concern campaign will include radio advertisements and a widespread poster campaign, as well as a website (www.NoiseConcern.

Our new research shows how millions of people are suffering every day – feeling frustrated, angry and deprived of sleep. But there are several things sufferers can do to stop the problem and this campaign will point them in the right direction.” The campaign comes at the height of summer when noise levels rise through outdoor activities, such as BBQs and gardening, and many windows and doors are left open. Noise has become more of a problem in modern society for many reasons, including: • Some houses have flimsy walls; • Flats and apartments are becoming

popular, meaning more people live in one area; Children play nearer home for safety reasons; As many homes have two earners, dogs are left at home alone and bark all day; Surround sound and better technology means people crank their stereo up; DIY has never been so popular resulting in Sunday morning drilling.

Mr Woods added: “Neighbour noise will never be switched off completely, but we hope the research campaign and website will make people aware of how their noise is ruining other people’s lives and make them think twice before they start the drill or crank up their music.”

How to swap a paper clip for a house 1

20

A year ago, Kyle MacDonald, 26, set out on the road to home ownership with nothing more than a red paper clip and a willingness to trust in the Internet. Tomorrow he’s due to pick up the keys to his two-storey house in Saskatchewan, Canada, after a series of 14 web-based trades. i Mr MacDonald began the process on July 12 last year, when he posted a notice on his website saying that he wanted to swap the paper clip for something a little more impressive. ii ‘The idea was based on a child’s game called Bigger and Better,’ he said. ‘You start with something small and trade around the neighbourhood, knocking on doors. I think I may be the first to try it online.’ iii ‘My girlfriend and I paid rent for an apartment in Montreal and I’d always wanted to own my own house and this is how I decided to go about it,’ he said. iv Two women from Vancouver were the first to buy into his scheme, trading a wooden fish pen one of them had found while on a camping trip. This was snapped up by a sculptor in Seattle, who offered Mr MacDonald a hand-made ceramic doorknob in exchange, which in turn was traded

for an outdoor camping stove. v Soon, a US marine sergeant in California offered him a 1,000-watt portable gas powered generator for the stove. By this time, his quest had become a full-time obsession. ‘Something is only worth what you put into it,’ Mr MacDonald said. ‘It started as a hobby, but I realised I would have to put in more time if I was going to succeed.’ vi However, the dream was nearly scuppered when MacDonald travelled to New York to make his next trade. There, the fire brigade confiscated the gas-powered generator from his motel room after guests complained of a suspicious odour. vii Firefighters let him have the generator back in time to make a deal with a man from Queens, New York for a neon beer sign and a keg. He traded these for a snowmobile, then a ski vacation, a van, a recording contract, a rent-free Phoenix apartment for a year, an afternoon with rock star

Alice Cooper, and a snow globe featuring the band KISS. viii The snow globe deal immediately sparked an outcry. Followers posting comments on Mr MacDonald’s website said it was ‘crazy’ and ‘the worst trade that I have ever heard of, bar none.’ ix ‘I think a little piece of me just died inside,’ one fan wrote. ‘I’ve been following this for the past couple of months. I was very impressed with everything you’ve done up to this point. ... Is this some kind of April fools joke in May?’ x Luckily, the Hollywood director Corbin Bernsen turned out to be ‘one of the biggest snow globe collectors on the planet’ and owns 6,500

of them according to Mr MacDonald. He traded the item for a role in his next movie, Donna on Demand. xi The final trade involved the town of Kipling in Saskatchewan, which decided that it wanted to auction the film role to promote the municipality. The mayor offered Mr MacDonald a renovated 1920s house on Main Street in return, and will hand over the keys tomorrow.

SO SOMEONE ELSE CAN TAKE IT UP A new campaign will make sure your unwanted instrument goes to a young person who needs it…

BC Music Live, in collaboration with the charity the National Foundation for Youth Music, are calling an Instrument Amnesty – anyone who has a working instrument that they can spare is asked to hand it in. It could be the start of a lifelong love of music for one child, or a glittering career for another. The idea of the Amnesty came about because of a worrying shortage of instruments available to people who desperately wanted to learn to play, and didn’t have the opportunity. The campaign was launched on 30 March and is a focal point of the BBC Music Live weekend from 25-29 May. Along with the live music broadcasts, there will be appeals on national and local TV and radio stations to alert the public to the Amnesty. Anyone with an instrument in good condition that they’d like to pledge can call the BBC audience line or go online. Youth Music will allocate the instrument to music projects local to donors, and they will all make arrangements for the handover of the instrument following BBC Music Live. To find out more or to make your pledge, call the BBC audience line on 08700 100125 or go online. All calls are charged at national rate.

H O W CAN I TEL L IF MY INS TRUMEN T IS P L A Y ABL E? Make sure that there aren’t any serious dents or other distortions of the instrument’s shape that might affect the sound. n If you encounter tuning problems on your instrument, it does not necessarily mean it is irrevocably damaged. Strings can be changed, screws tightened, pads replaced. As long as the tuning post or plank is itself not damaged then all it probably needs is simple adjustments. n Check that all keys work smoothly and do not stick when depressed. n For more unusual instruments, and specific instruments like flutes and trumpets, you may need an expert to determine its state of repair. STRINGS n Be wary of cracks on the underside of the instrument where the sound post joins the roof to its base, and also cracks directly underneath the bridge (where the pressure from the strings is greatest). n Cracks in other places may not be so serious. n Worn strings may cause the overall tuning of the instrument to wane but they are easily replaced. n

PIANOS (UPRIGHT) Pianos with wooden frames are more susceptible to warping – humidity and central heating can wreak havoc on them. If in doubt, get an expert to check the condition of your piano. Worn keys can be replaced but the action must be in good working order. BRASS n All valves and slides must be present and in good working order. n Check for rust – if it has gone through the metal, it can disable the instrument. WOODWIND n Varnish should be intact on oboes and bassoons, as air and water can leak through the wood itself. n In bassoons the U-bend can be a common trouble spot – water is sometimes left there after playing. n With flutes, it is very hard to tell whether air is escaping due to a leak, whether it’s the player, or whether it’s the design. Only a repairer or experienced player can give a full picture of its condition. n
