r Reading Exercise 1 Read the text and answer the questions. True or false?
If you have a new job, you will meet your colleagues in the first week. Of course, you will have to introduce yourself, and you will want to know who they are. Someone in the company will show you around. He or she will help you to find out who’s who. In your job you sometimes have to introduce people to each other. For instance, a visitor and a manager, or two customers who visit a trade fair. When you welcome visitors or customers you greet them in a polite and friendly way. First impressions are important. In some cases you will shake hands, in other cases you don’t have to. A receptionist in a large company does not have to shake hands with all the visitors. Always follow the ‘rules’ of your company.

Bloop!
When people meet they sometimes want to change from formal to informal speech. In Dutch we say: “Zullen we ‘jij’ zeggen” or “Zullen we tutoyeren?” A very important German politician visited the United States in the nineties. Of course, he met the president of the US. The German politician wanted to be informal and said: “You can say you to me.” What do you think went wrong? Discuss with your teacher.

Getting around Read the text below.
Joyce is new to the company. She started work this morning. Peter Falks, her boss, is showing her around. He tells her where she can find the most important offices, the restaurant, the coffee machine, the copier, the toilets, etc. He also tells her about the safety regulations in case of a fire or other big problems. During the tour he introduces her to some of their colleagues. Some of their colleagues are not in the office today. She will meet them later in the week. At the end of the tour he takes her to her desk. Peter: ”Right Joyce, this is your desk. You will need a login code and password for your computer. Just call 1245 and IT will help you. There’s the phone. Your two tasks for this morning are to get your computer running and to read the telephone instructions. Take your time. I’ll see you later. And, if you have any questions, please come and find me. Good luck today!”

Which appointment was a lunch meeting? Who was really late for his/her appointment? Who was only just on time? Whose appointment lasted for three hours? One person arrived but his/her meeting partner was not in the office. Who are these two people? Which person had a job interview? Two people arrived 15 minutes early. Who? Who left after office hours?
Time, a.m. or p.m.?
When making appointments it is important to know the difference between a.m. and p.m. All the hours between 00:00 (midnight) and 12:00 (noon) are called a.m. All the hours between 12:00 and 00:00 are called p.m. Or, even easier: Before 12:00 = a.m. After 12:00 = p.m. When you use the 24-hour notation it is not really necessary to add a.m. or p.m. You can see that 13:30 is in the afternoon (p.m.) and 10:00 is in the morning (a.m.) In timetables, however, people do sometimes use them. In normal speech people often do not use the 24-hour notation, but only the 12-hour notation. They may say: ‘I’ll meet you at three p.m.’ Now you know that this is in the afternoon.

First impressions are very important. English speakers are very polite and use ‘please’ a lot. English speakers use their first and family names to introduce themselves. They do not call themselves Mr or Mrs when they introduce themselves like the Dutch. Italians and Germans are proud of their professional titles. Dr Benedetti and Prof Strauss want to be called by their titles. ‘Meet & Greet’ is mostly used for celebs (celebrities). Did you ever go to a Meet & Greet?
