Michel de Montaigne on indigenous Americans We can call them barbarians, but not if we compare them to ourselves. For we surpass them in every kind of barbarity. Their method of waging war is altogether noble and generous, with as much beauty and justice as possible: for them, the only reason to go to war is to outdo each other in bravery. They do not fight to conquer new territories, because they still have the pleasure of a bountiful nature. Nature gives them, without labour and effort, everything they need, and so generously that they have no reason to expand their territory. Paraphrased from: Michel de Montaigne, Essays, 1580.
