El 16 de noviembre del año 2010, la comida mexicana fue reconocida como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad, por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura. San Miguel de Allende fue nombrada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad también por la UNESCO, el día 7 de julio del 2008.

LA BURGER Parrilla y leña de mezquite, insuperable sabor.

o primero en llamar la atención es el fuego hipnótico, ardiendo constante frente de ti. Lo segundo es el aroma exquisito de la carne, crepitando en una parrilla hecha a medida de la Burger. El ambiente es súper, hay mesas al aire con vista a las montañas. Su imagen parece una postal, pero nadie llega a este lugar solo por el hermoso paisaje. Aquí es donde los amantes de la carne, pueden convertir sus sueños en realidad todos los días. La clásica hamburguesa norteamericana, ahora tiene un sabor al sur de nuestro continente.
Las recetas son sencillas, todas han sido elaboradas por el fundador y propietario de La Burger. La carne es importada y de la mejor calidad, sus vegetales son hidropónicos y la leña de mezquite es el ingrediente especial. El Mezquite produce una madera muy densa y crece en las áreas semidesérticas, su combustión lenta y sus altos grados de calor, hacen a este elemento de cocción, el más popular entre los maestros

Resultado de la fusión de culturas, la comida yucateca es símbolo del mestizaje entre la sabiduría maya y gastronomía española, las cuales se volvieron inseparables a través del tiempo. En la calle de Jesús número 36, la familia Novelo Irabien, hoy escribe una sabrosa historia, en torno a la comida yucateca. Don Luis Novelo Rosado y su esposa, Ana Mari Irabien de Novelo, han emprendido esta deliciosa aventura con el empuje de dos recién casados. Su júbilo y entusiasmo brotan por todos lados. Su nieta, Alejandra D Leeuw, es la chef de La Casa del Diezmo. Mientras Ale se acercaba a nuestra mesa con unos suculentos Panuchos, quizá Don Luis la recordó de niña, cuando jugaba a hacer comida, sus ojos al mirarla, reflejaron gran satisfacción. Este delicioso platillo está hecho con tortitas de maíz hechas a mano, fritas en aceite. Se preparan haciéndoles un corte por en medio, para rellenarlas de un guiso a base de frijol, complementándose en la parte superior, con lechuga, tomate, cebolla, aguacate y carne de guajolote o cochinita pibil. Teniendo una gran tradición restaurantera en la Península de Yucatán, pregunté a Don Luis, por qué la familia escogió a San Miguel para su nuevo restaurante. Su respuesta fue sencilla: “Nos enamoramos de esta ciudad”. En Casa del Diezmo, disfruta su comida de Yucatán, y su cocina internacional.

A taste of the Yucatan, in San Miguel de Allende. The gastronomy of the Yucatan Peninsula represents a fusion of cultures. It serves to demonstrate the mixing of Mayan and Spanish flavors, two worlds which, over time, have become impossible to separate. At Jesus Number 36, the Novelo Irabien family is writing a delicious new chapter in the history of Yucatan cuisine. The joy and enthusiasm of Don Luis Novelo Rosado and his wife Ana Mari Irabien de Novelo is apparent in every aspect of their new project. Their granddaughter, Alejandra D Leeuw, is the chef at the Casa del Diezmo. As Ale brings us a plate of succulent Panuchos, her grandfather’s eyes follow her with a look of extreme pride, possibly reminiscing about the tiny child she once was, playing at cooking in the kitchen.
Panuchos are a delicious Yucatan dish made with thick fried handmade corn tortillas. They are sliced down the middle and stuffed with a beanbased filling then dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado and turkey meat or cochinita pibil. With a long history of restaurants in the Yucatan Peninsula, I asked Don Luis why they chose San Miguel for their new location. His response came easy, “we fell in love with the city”. At Casa del Diezmo you can enjoy a taste of the Yucatan along with their international food menu.

n Cuna de Allende 11 te espera un encuentro con los sabores de Francia y Portugal. Con dos años y medio de vida en San Miguel de Allende, Mezzanine Bistro está consolidado en el gusto de la ciudad y en el de los turistas que buscan gastronomía de calidad. Su espléndido menú, nos lleva a un suculento viaje por Europa. Su decoración mediterránea, invita a comer tranquilamente en medio de su sobria elegancia. Al predominar el color blanco en el ambiente, se realza la buena presentación de cada plato. El Bacalao en Natas, es una de las especialidades de la casa. Este delicioso pez en Mezzanine, no lleva el proceso común de sazón. Por ello su sabor es muy diferente al cual estamos acostumbrados. Su preparación en vino blanco y crema espesa con ajo y perejil, le dan un exquisito sabor. Unas papas con queso gratinado, complementan el delicioso plato. El vino verde portugués, con Denominación de Origen del Moncao, es la compañía perfecta en la mesa. Para cerrar el festín al paladar, una Tripleta francesa de chocolate con frutos, llegó a nuestro lugar. Biscocho de cholate, relleno con mousse de chocloate y cubierto con betún de chocolate. ¡Esto lo tienes que probar! Después de ver la calidad que ofrece Mezzanine, es difícil hacerse del rogar. To finish off this flavor journey, we devoured a French chocolate Tripleta topped with fruit: a chocolate biscuit, stuffed with chocolate mousse and covered in chocolate frosting. This you must try! MARÍA y su BICI Comida autóctona, tal cual.

aría y su Bici, es un homenaje a nuestras raíces. Su cocina mixteca, permanece autóctona en cada mesa. Su chef María Galán, brinda su talento para preservar la cultura indígena a través del tiempo. El restaurante es una extensión de Oaxaca, su ambientación es totalmente mexicana. Las notas de su música en vivo, puede llevar las gotas del Mezcalito de Lila Downs, los besos que no devolvió José Alfredo o el brillo de unos ojitos negros bajando el cerro de contrabando.
Una de sus especialidades, lleva el nombre de una artesanía mexicana de reciente reconocimiento, creada por el Maestro Pedro Linares López, se trata de la Botana Alebrije, chicatanas, chapulines y gusanos de maguey, componen este ancestral entremés. Los moles oaxaqueños son un emblema del restaurante, al igual que las Tlayudas de maíz molido con su tueste y sabor singular. La idea de este lugar surge de dos experien-
cias mágicas, los orígenes mixtecos de María Galán, nacida en el estado de Oaxaca, en Pinotepa Nacional, y de sus viajes a la Zona Maya. Una costumbre familiar de María, es compartir sus raíces culturales. Gracias a su noble formación, hoy tenemos en María y su bici, un restaurante donde los platillos, la música, la arquitectura y sus artesanías, son una fuente inagotable de nuestro valor.
Indigenous tradition brought to the table. María y su Bici, is an homage to our roots. This Restaurant’s Mixteca cuisine captures a new audience each time a table is served. Their chef, María Galán, is using her talent to preserve indigenous culinary tradition with each plate. The restaurant is an extension of the state of Oaxaca; its ambiance 100% Mexican. The notes of the live music include drops of Lila Downs’ mezcal and the kisses Jose Alfredo Jimenez never gave back. One of the house specialties is named in honor of Pedro Linares López’s contribution to Mexican arts and crafts, the Alebrije. as well as tlayudas made of ground corn and roasted to create a singular flavor. The restaurant’s concept draws on two cultural experiences in the life of Maria Galan: her Mixteca orgins, she was born in Pinotepa Nacional in the state of Oaxaca, and her travels to Mayan communities throughout Mexico. n los años cincuenta, se reanudó el mundial de fútbol en Brasil, se dió la primera edición del concurso Miss Universo, fué coronada Isabel II, y nació el Rock and Roll. Ahora la reina Isabel inauguró los Juegos Olímpicos en Londres donde México gano medalla de oro en futbol, ganándole a Brasil. El mundial vuelve al país del Rey Pelé, tenemos 2 Miss Universo y el Rock sigue sonando. El planeta sigue su curso y las buenas ideas continúan dándole vueltas al mundo. Así ocurre con las Hamburguesas de Gerry´s, haciendo honor a la leyenda de los años cincuenta.

Así se ha construido una reputación de suculentas comidas y banquetes de calidad. Hay buenos recuerdos en el equipo de Banquetes Marcela, quienes han participado en trabajos de filmación, con locaciones en San Miguel, brindando sus servicios a los artistas y productores. Begun by American iron worker Peter Lambert twelve years ago, they have been in San Miguel for the past year offering artistic and functional iron work for clients in the United States and locally. The difference between what you will find at Red Star and the work of other blacksmiths is that they work the iron “hot” instead of “cold”. This implies heating the metal to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit instead of the normal 90 degrees, allowing for the rich curves, double twists, and integrated designs of Red Star’s work. The architecture of bullrings throughout the globe began with the Roman Empire. Nevertheless, in each Plaza de Toros there still exists a touch of local culture. In the plaza chapels of Mexico are images of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and in Spain the Virgin of La Macarena.

enía que ser así, el camino para llegar a ella es empedrado y de subida, como toda la arquitectura en el centro de San Miguel de Allende. En el imaginario colectivo, sus orígenes podrían ubicarse hacia finales del siglo XVII o principios del XVIII. La historia de la Plaza de Toros Oriente quizá, nació junto a los sueños de un México independiente. Siendo entonces San Miguel el Grande, un importante polo de desarrollo mercantil, industrial y agrícola.

he plaza’s imposing entrance is cobblestone and slopes uphill, similar to the rest of the architecture in San Miguel de Allende. The origins of this plaza may date back to the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century. It’s possible that the dreams of a Plaza de Toros were simultaneously with dreams of an independent Mexico whispered in the streets. San Miguel el Grande, as the city was known at the time, was an important center of commerce, industry and agricultural.

Juan Antonio Ruiz, fue sobrino nieto de Don José Dolores Ruiz, conocido en aquella época por sus seres queridos, como Don Lole. Este importante personaje, fue guarda plaza toda su vida en la Plaza de Toros Oriente. Juan Antonio convivió todos los días con Don Lole, desde sus 3 años de vida, hasta cumplir 12, cuando Don Lole se adelantó en el camino.
Juan Antonio Ruiz, was the nephew of Don José Dolores Ruiz known affectionately as Don Lole. Don Lole was an important presence in the history of the plaza, serving as its caretaker his entire life. From the age 3 to 12, Juan Antonio spent every day in the plaza with his uncle Don Lole until the day he passed away.

Open to other evidence, Juan Antonio Ruiz offers up a historical text by Antonio Ruiz Valenzuela which cites Don Donato Almanza as claiming the inauguration date of the Plaza Oriente was in October of 1878. For Gustavo Vidargas, the beginnings of the plaza date much further back. His theory is supported by the construction materials found there, which speak of three different eras. First, the era of stone and mortar, a construction system used by the Spanish when they arrived on the continent, based on Roman style building with stone and lime. The second, a more recent phase that saw the building of the partition walls and a third when the plaza’s arches and roof were constructed.

The Plaza de Toros Oriente is located in the heart of San Miguel enclosed by the streets Recreo where you will find its entrance, and the streets Huertas, Barranca and Hospicio, on a piece of land approximately 7,500 square meters. The administrator of the bullring, Marcial Herce, highlights the location of the plaza as one of its special characteristics, no plaza in Mexico still resides in a city center. Marcial arrived at the plaza ready to infuse new blood and energy into this spectacular construction reminiscent of the Roman empire. uilt into the side of a hill, the Juriquilla Bullring seems to form a part of the mountain itself. The stones used in its construction provide the arena with its beautiful facade. The same stones from the surrounding hills were used in the construction creating a visible, structural integration for the entire complex. Looking at the Plaza de Toros Juriquilla is a spectacle in and of itself. From any angle, the view is formidable. Its arches, steps, the ring itself and its corrals are each emblematic. The stone arcade and platforms have large, impeccably constructed enclosures, so unique that they are called “Bull housing”. The burladeros, the barriers where matadors take refuge while in the bullring, are spectacularly hand-carved wood. The ring’s owners, the Torres Landa brothers, whose great affection for bullfighting culture was inherited from their father, a practicing aficionado of the tradition, have been closely involved with the project since its creation. The general architecture was designed by Juan Germán Torres Landa and the concept of the ornately carved burladeros came from Juan Arturo “El Pollo” Torres Landa.

El día seis de junio del año 1987, se inauguró el primer proyecto, teniendo en su cartel, al “Curro Rivera” y a Miguel Espinoza “Armillita”, lidiando toros de Don Javier Garfias. En aquel entonces, se tuvieron que rentar gradas montables, por la gran respuesta del público. Desde entonces, Juriquilla ha tenido los mejores carteles nacionales e internacionales, incluyendo a la mismísima Península Ibérica. En una interesante charla con Ricardo Vielma Vázquez, torero y administrador de la bella plaza, me comentó sobre su llegada desde el nacimiento del proyecto. A invitación de Juan Arturo “El Pollo” Torres Landa, decidió dejar un período el toreo, para dedicarse de tiempo completo a su familia

On the 6th of June in 1987 the ring was inaugurated with a line-up that included the matador “Curro Rivera” and Miguel Espinoza “Armillita” battling with the bulls of Don Javier Garfias. For this event, Juriqulla was forced to rent mountable grandstands to meet the incredible response of the public. Since then, Juriquilla has had some of the best national and international bills. In an interesting conversation with Ricardo Vielma Vázquez, matador and administrator of this beautiful plaza, he spoke about his arrival to the Juriquilla bullring. Invited by Juan Arturo “El Pollo” Torres Landa, he decided to leave bullfighting for a period in order to dedicate himself full time to his family and this ambitious

ace casi cincuenta años, el abogado Nicolás González Jáuregui, le dio un regalo de navidad monumental a los queretanos. La Plaza de Toros Santa María, inaugurada el 22 de diciembre de 1963. En aquel invierno de Fiesta Brava, uno de los toreros del cartel inaugural fue Alfredo Leal, quien logró destacar como un actor importante en México, gracias a su gran carisma en el ambiente taurino. Alfredo Leal, fue esposo de la gran cantante de música ranchera, Lola Beltrán y en los años 60s, se retiró de los toros en la cumbre de su popularidad. Solo con esta figura, podemos imaginar como fue aquel día cuando la Santa María de Querétaro abrió sus puertas.

lmost 50 years ago, lawyer Nicolás González Jáuregui gave the citizens of Queretaro an incredible Christmas gift. La Plaza de Toros Santa Maria was inaugurated on the 22 of December of 1963. That winter, one of the matadors that graced the inaugural bill was Alfredo Leal, who later became a famous actor in Mexico thanks to his incredible charisma in the bullring. He was the husband of the great ranchera singer Lola Beltrán and in the 1960s retired from the ring at the height of his popularity. Only a figure of his stature could have been there when the Santa Maria bullring in Queretaro opened its doors for the first time.

Miguel Mateo “Miguelín”, también formó parte del cartel, de aquel memorable 22 de diciembre. En la biografía oficial de este torero español, está el inolvidable día en la Santa María. La presentación de “Miguelín” fue un 31 de marzo de 1957 en la Plaza de Las Ventas, en Madrid, España, seis años más tarde, en la plenitud de su carrera, estaría en el coso de la monumental queretana. Yucateco de nacimiento y celayense por adopción, Antonio del Olivar también estuvo en el legendario cartel inaugural en la capital queretana. En la Plaza México, en 1959 del Olivar recibía los trastos de manos de Manuel Capetillo. A tres años de aquel memorable día, llegó Antonio para darle lustre
Miguel Mateo “Miguelín” also formed a part of that memorable line-up on Decemeber 22. In this Spanish matador’s biography he describes this unforgettable day at Santa Maria. Miguelín’s debut was on the 31 of March, 1957 at the Plaza de Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain. 6 Six years later, at the height of his career, he perreformed in this monumental arena in Queretaro. Born in the Yucatan Peninsula and adopted by a family in Celaya, Antonio del Olivar also held a place on the inaugural bill in Queretaro’s capital. In the Plaza México, in 1959, del Olivar was bestowed the tools of the matador by Manuel Capetillo. Three years before the memorable day when Antonio

La historia de esta enorme estructura quincuagenaria, está llena de glorias en la vida taurina mexicana. En 1986, para celebrar el Mundial de Fútbol en México, en el palco familiar de sus propietarios, fue construido un restaurante, donde hoy hemos probado sus deliciosas carnitas de puerco. Así como La fiesta de los Toros ha sido un factor de unión entre aficionados de España y México, un excelente ejemplo de la fusión entre estas dos culturas, es un Taco de Carnitas de puerco, al ser la primera comida mestiza creada en la época de la conquista. El cerdo traído de Europa, y la tortilla de maíz azteca, se unieron para jamás separarse.

stood in the Santa Maria bullring for its opening day. The bulls of that first corrida, came from Rancho Santa María and were the property of the ring’s owner, Nicolás González Jáuregui. The history of this 50-year old structure overflows with the glories of the bullfighting tradition in Mexico. In 1986, to celebrate the World Cup in Mexico, a restaurant was built within the owners’ private viewing box at the bullring. Today, this locale serves delicious pork carnitas, infamous in the area. Just as bullfighting helped to unify aficionados of the tradition in Spain and Mexico, tacos de carnitas are an example of the fusion of these two cultures. The first mestiza food, carnitas were created by combining the pork brought from Spain with Azteca corn tortillas - a match made in heaven.
A partir de la década de los noventas, la Plaza de Toros Santa María diversificó su oferta. Su excelente acústica, y la capacidad para recibir 10 mil personas, volcaron a la plaza en un lugar favorito para grandes conciertos. Eventos culturales como la Ópera Carmen, hicieron pensar a sus propietarios en la posibilidad de abrirse a otro tipo de espectáculos.

Nicolás González, nieto de Don Nicolás y ahora administrador de la plaza, recuerda haber conocido a artistas de la talla de Miguel Bosé y Enrique Iglesias, Enrique Búnbury, bandas de Rock como Mecano, Maná, Café Tacuba, Kinky, Moenia, Claxons, Air Supply, Creadence. A casi 50 años de su primer día, a la Santa María le faltan porvenir muchos días. Ya está la tercera generación trabajando, para llegar a otros cumplir otros 50 en la lidia.
Great performers such as Luis Miguel, have come to present in the Plaza de Toros Santa María. Nicolas Gonzalez, grandson of Don Nicolás and the now administrator of the plaza remembers famous artists such as Miguel Bosé, Enrique Iglesias and Enrique Búnbury along with rock bands like Mecano, Maná, Café Tacuba, Kinky, Moenia, Claxons, Air Supply, and Creadence. An average of 12 concerts are held in the plaza each year. There are already events scheduled until the end of the 2012, and in September they will host several concerts, one of which will be Zoe. Los Tigres del Norte had a successful preformance this year at Santa María, as well as Joan Sebastian with her phenomenal horse extravaganza. 50 years from its opening day, a third generation is now managing the Plaza de Santa Maria and they are looking forward to being there for the next 50 years of bullfighting in Mexico. A Gallery of Inspiration Atenea Gallery’s most recent exposition featured the work of well known Uruguayan photographer Gaston Duarte. This Latin American photographer has spent years crossing continents capturing interesting images. La autora manifiesta en su obra la afectación del desarrollo humano individual sobre la evolución de todo el mundo, lo cual ocurre en sintonía y complemento. De la belleza de cada persona, Cristina ilumina un universo en su pintura. El trabajo de Cristina se ha visto profundamente influido por diversos artistas independientes mexicanos. Con una preparación autodidacta en las artes, Cristina encontró una de sus pasiones. Ella agradece a los maestros que la ayudaron a encontrar su modo de expresión. En el mundo en que vivimos, nos dice Cristina Alfaro, el arte independiente tiene más importancia que nunca. “Mi intención al ser artista, es mostrar nuestra humanidad, esa cualidad que hemos olvidado. Estamos viviendo un momento muy cruel, muy deshumanizante en nuestra historia “ –comenta la creadora- “Estoy orgullosa de los jóvenes que utilizan el arte como un medio de comuni-
cación, y debate, sobre lo que está sucediendo en nuestro país”. Cristina cita algunos pintores jóvenes, Víctor Rodríguez, Arturo Rivera y Monica Castillo, como inspiración de artistas independientes, quienes están plasmando el rostro del México de hoy. Sinchronias y Complementos (Synchronicities and Complements), Cristina Alfaro’s latest collection of paintings, follows the artist’s personal journey of development and introspection. The work likewise asks viewers to reflect on their own inner life and how individual human evolution simultaneously affects the evolution of the world at large and complements the profound beauty that we encounter in others. Cristina’s work has been deeply affected by other independent artists in Mexico. As a self-taught she encountered the love of her life when she began oil painting and is appreciative of the many influential masters who assisted her in her search for ex-
pression. In the world we live in, according to the artist, independent art is more important than ever. “My intention in being an artist is to reveal our humanity, the humanity we have forgotten. We are living in a very cruel, very dehumanizing moment in history” she says, “I am proud of the numbers of young people who are using art as a means of communication and discussion about what is happening in our country.” She cites great young painters such as Victor Rodriguez, Arturo Rivera, and Monica Castillo as inspiring independent artists changing the face of Mexico today. Mexican Independent Art, a Burning Passion
Desde hace mucho tiempo la obra de Jaime Goded es un ejemplo del arte independiente en San Miguel de Allende. Goded define el trabajo independiente, como “la actividad artística no sujeta a la moda estética imperante, ni a las reglas tradicionales de producción. El arte independiente transmite un sentimiento estético único en el espectador u oyente, debido al rechazo emotivo, manifiesto ante lo establecido y aceptado.”
The output of painter and sculptor Jaime Goded is a long-standing example of independent art in San Miguel de Allende. He conceptualizes independent work as “artistic activity that is not subject to the prevailing esthetic trends, nor traditional rules of production. Independent art transmits a unique esthetic sensation to the viewer or listener precisely because it represents an emotional rejection of what is established and accepted.”
Utilizando diversas técnicas, Goded realiza momento a momento, un trabajo original y sencillo. Jaime recrea expresiones de la realidad humana, en breves e intensas miradas al amor, fomentando los derechos humanos, y a su vez, propiciando la voluntad de conocer el mundo. La apreciación de Goded sobre el arte mexicano, empieza en los tiempos prehispánicos, pasando por los grandes muralistas, y el Taller de Gráfica Popular. Working with many different mediums and techniques Goded attempts to create original, simple, and well-made pieces that seek to recreate and express tiny snapshots of human reality, especially brief and intense looks of love; looks that strengthen our willingness to know the world and that cement the rights of society and of people. Goded’s appreciation of Mexican art dates back to pre-Hispanic art forms, along with the great Mexican muralists, and the Taller de Gráfica Popular. He recognizes how these sources have affected his own way of thinking about independent art.

Al preguntarle a Federico Correa, cómo define el arte independiente mexicano, él nos dice: “su esencia cruda, es una combinación de política, experiencias personales, y un aspecto sexual, característico del arte nacional”. La obra expuesta de Correa, tiene un impulso político y emocional, el cual siempre ha estimulado su creatividad. Su trabajo se puede apreciar en la calle de San Francisco número 18, en San Miguel de Allende.
When asked what defines independent Mexican art Federico Correa cites it’s “rawness”, a combination of the political, the personal, the sexual, and the self, expressed in a uniquely Mexican way. Art that has a political and emotional thrust stimulates Correa’s creativity and surfaces in his own paintings displayed at Arte Correa, his second floor gallery space at San Francisco 18.
Federico vivió su juventud en una familia Mexicoamericana, en los Estado Unidos, esto lo llevó a conocer a sus héroes creativos antes de volver a México: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, y Tina Modotti. “Estos artistas me inspiraron” –comenta Correa- “Los admiro porque sus obras, son el reflejo de sus vidas. En su juventud lucharon con energía buscando siempre un cambio en el país”.
Correa’s Mexican-American upbringing in the United States led to the discovery of creative heroes such as Diego Rivera, David Siquieros, and Tina Modotti before he had even experienced his native country firsthand. “These artists inspired me,” he says “I admired who they were, the reflection of their lives in their work. Each was young and full of energy and looking to change the status quo in Mexico”.

Algunos reflejan facetas de vida mexicana y otros, nos muestran la infancia del autor en Soledad, California. Nuestro artista invitado lamenta la comercialización del arte en San Miguel, pero elogia el trabajo de los artistas que se arriesgan a seguir su pasión. Correa está trabajando en su nueva colección, y tiene planes de llevar su obra a otros estados de la república. Correa’s own work is a collection of larger than life canvases with strong color combination where the abstract and the everyday converge. Each one recreates vignettes of

Mexican life and often reflects his youth growing up in Soledad, California. He laments the commercialization of art he often encounters but praises local artists who create with risk and pour passion into their work. Además de la cerámica de bellos dibujos, en Dolores encontrarás muebles antiguos, tiendas de decoración y cientos de pequeñas tiendas, con todo tipo de ropa y zapatos.
Para hacer más fácil tu elección, te daremos algunas sugerencias: Muebles y decoraciones, en la Calzada de los héroes, en el kilómetro 3.5, Azulejos Coloniales de Dolores, ubicado en el mismo tramo de la carretera. Un poco más hacia el centro de la ciudad, en Avenida Norte y José Alfredo Jiménez, hay una zona colmada de cerámica y tiendas de artesanías, una de nuestras favoritas, es Artesanía Liceague (Ave Norte 5) Interesante será visitar el Museo de La Casa de Hidalgo, (Calle Morelos 1) Otra gran idea, es visitar el Museo José Alfredo Jiménez, (Ave Guanajuato 13). Dos lugares muy bien conservados, en donde vive la historia y la tradición mexicana. La histórica Plaza de Dolores, en la cual Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, dio el Grito de Independencia, el 15 de septiembre de 1810, es una de las más bellas atracciones de la ciudad. Los vendedores de nieve, invitan a los visitantes a probar los helados de cerveza, tequila, pulpo o de camarones. Te recomendamos pasar por la nevería Flor de Dolores, (Ave. Guanajuato 5), donde el helado de biznaga es fantástico. A la hora de comer, el Restaurante Bar Plaza (Plaza Principal 17-B), a un costado de la plaza principal, es muy popular entre turistas y gente de la localidad. El Carruaje (Ave. Guanajuato 5), restaurante con un hermoso patio al aire libre, donde disfrutarás de sus deliciosos platillos tradicionales, como quesadillas de huitlacoche y el Molcajete Carruaje. Si decidiste quedarte una noche, puedes hospedarte en el Hotel Posada Cocomacan (Plaza Principal 4). En este bello lugar, Don Benito Juárez fue hospedado en 1867. A unas cuadras de ahí, se encuentra el hotel Ámbar (Ave. Guanajuato 9), con habitaciones de sobria elegancia, enmarcando un patio central, convertido en un elegante restaurante. Dolores Hidalgo Hidden Treasures
delighting shoppers with ceramics, crafts and amazing ice cream Dolores Hidalgo is like a wild shopping jungle. Driving into town you are faced with the wonderful dilemma of which shop might hold your next perfect home accessory or gift. Talavera is the town’s signature craft, whose production was encouraged by famous priest and insurgent Father Miguel Hidalgo’s founding of the Escuela de Arte y Oficios. In addition to these intricately patterned ceramics, Dolores is home to many antique furniture and decoration shops and hundreds of small shops filled with modern day clothes, shoes, and other daily necessities. It can be hard to choose among all the locales, but a few suggestions are Muebles y Decoraciones, on calzada de los hereos (Km 3.5) as you enter the city and Azuelos Coloniales de Dolores on the same stretch of highway. A little further into town Avenida Norte and Av. Jose Alfredo Jimenez, are filled to overflowing with ceramic and craft shops, and Artesania Liceague (Ave. Norte 5) is a personal favorite. Dolores’s main plaza is the historic location of the “Grito de Independencia” by Hidalgo on the 16 of September 1810, and one of the town’s loveliest attractions. Ice cream vendors call out to visitors to taste cerveza, tequila or shrimp flavored ice cream. Or you can stop by Flor de Dolores (Av Guanajuato 3), where the biznaga ice cream is fantastic! For lunch, the Plaza Restaurant on the main square is popular with tourists and residents alike, and El Carruaje (Av. Guanajuato 5) has a bright outdoor patio and delicious traditional Mexican dishes such as quesadillas con huatelchoche and the Molcajete Carrauje. When you want a break from shopping and eating see the Museum of La Casa de Hildago (Moreles 1) and the Museo Jose Alfredo Jiménez (Guanajuato 13), two extremely well preserved homages to great men in the history of Dolores Hidalgo. Feel like staying for the night? Try the Hotel Posada Cocomacan (Plaza principal 4) where a visiting Benito Juarez stayed in 1867 or a few blocks from the main plaza is the Hotel Anbar (Av. Guanajuato 9), with simply decorated rooms that surround a brightly colored and fresh looking patio restaurant. Mineral de POZOS
Pueblo fantasma para escaparse a la tranquilidad Atmósfera adormilada, ruinas impresionantes y comida deliciosa Mineral de Pozos fué una ciudad minera, productora de oro y plata, durante el boom de estos metales en el siglo XIX. Desde aquellos tiempos, entre las montañas quedan interesantes ruinas de minas abandonadas. Sus paredes antiguas son de piedra, en la gran mayoría de ellas, la mitad de sus estructuras están derrumbadas. Para llegar a ellas, toma el camino sinuoso de grava, a la salida de la ciudad, siguiendo las indicaciones para el “Antiguo Abasto”, asegúrate de tener tiempo para ir más allá de la última mina y así dar un buen vistazo a ellas desde sus puertas traseras. Desde estas vistas, el panorama de las grandes haciendas es más impresionante, porque la visión es mucho más amplia que en las entradas. Alrededor de la plaza principal de Pozos, hay una variedad de tiendas de artesanías mexicanas, locales y regionales. Algunas de las mejores tiendas y galerías, se encuentran en pequeños hoteles boutique. En Dos Suites B & B, se encuentra Lovely Lemons, que se describe como una “boutique y boticario moderno”. El Secreto Hotel, está conectado a la Galería 6. Es una muestra ecléctica de arte contemporáneo. La Casa Mexicana, cuenta con una boutique, junto a un hermoso patio, con 5 habitaciones. Todos estan ubicados en la plaza principal. La mejor opción para comer en Los Pozos, es el restaurante Posada de las Minas (Manuel Doblado 1). En su terraza al aire libre, se puede disfrutar de su confortable y cálido mobiliario. En el interior de su acogedor bar con chimenea, sirven deliciosos platillos mexicanos tradicionales, con toques de moderna gastronomía. Para tomar un aperitivo por la tarde o realizar una gran vista al pueblo, con un expreso en la mano, visita el Café La Fama, arriba de la tienda del mismo nombre, ubicada en una de las esquina de la Plaza principal. Otras opciones son “Los Mineros” y el “Bar de Emilio”, a través de la plaza, ambos con buena comida, típica mexicana.

La gente que ha vivido en Pozos los últimos 10 años, podrán comentarte del repunte turístico del lugar, el cual se encuentra a poca distancia de su vecino, San Miguel de Allende. Pero hasta este momento, Pozos sigue siendo una forma de sueño para escapar, y pasar un agradable tarde.

Ambling atmosphere, breathtaking ruins, and delicious eats The town of Mineral de Pozos’ white washed adobe houses, crouching around the tiny, and in this season electric green, plaza are nicely contrasted by an overcast horizon and rolling clouds. Los Pozos was a silver and gold mining boom-town throughout the 19th Century and the ruins left behind dot the mountainside with ancient stone walls and half crumbling structures. Take the winding gravel road out of town (follow the signs for antiguo abasto) and make sure that you take the time to drive past the last mine and get a good look at them from their mountain perches. This view, of what were breathtaking large haciendas, is much more encompassing then viewing them from their entrance side. Surrounding Pozo’s main plaza is an assortment of arts and crafts stores which sell local as well as regional Mexican goods. Several of the best shops and galleries are located in small boutique hotels. At Dos Suites B and B you will find Lovely Lemons, described as a “boutique and modern apothecary”. El Secreto hotel is connected to Gallery 6, an eclectic mix of contemporary art and local artisanal products. And Casa Mexicana has the Casa Mexicana boutique, along with a lovely patio and 5 guest rooms. All of which are located right off the main plaza. By far the best option in town for eating is the restaurant of Posada de las Minas (Manuel Doblado 1). They

have enchanting open air seating on their veranda, and a cozy inside bar with chiminea. They serve delicious traditional Mexican dishes with modern culinary touches. For a light snack in the afternoon or a great view of the city with espresso in hand, visit the Caffe d Fama, upstairs from the La Fama shop on the corner of the main plaza. Other options are Los Mineros and Emilio’s bar across the plaza, both with good, typical Mexican fare. Folks living in Pozos for the past 10 years will tell you it’s all a matter a time before it booms like its touristy neighbor to the south, San Miguel de Allende. But until that time, it’s still a sleepy way to get away for a delightful afternoon.
ATOTONILCO
Peregrinación de arte e historía
La palabra Atotonilco viene del Náhuatl, su significado es “lugar de aguas calientes”. Esta área de 12 kilómetros cuadrados, ubicada en la carretera a Dolores, es rica en veneros de aguas termales. Este recurso singular de la zona, es un importante modo de vida para sus habitantes. Desde los primeros pobladores, hasta los tiempos actuales, visitantes y personas de la localidad, llegan a estas aguas, en busca de sanación, meditación y penitencia. La bondad que representa para las personas el agua termal, no es igual para las construcciones históricas de Atotonilco. La humedad constante y mineralización del vital líquido, llegaron a causar un importante deterioro en la obra arquitectónica y artística más importante del pueblo: El Santuario Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco. En 1996, al ser declarada como uno los “100 monumentos en mayor peligro” en el mundo, una organización no gubernamental inició su restauración. En 2008, la Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Educación la Ciencia y la Cultura, nombró este lugar, Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad. Destacando a este santuario de Atotonilco, como “uno de los ejemplos más finos del arte y la arquitectura Barroca en Nueva España”. Este templo, también es conocido como “la Capilla Sixtina de México”, por su imponente y exquisita pintura plasmada en sus techos y muros. Una gran parte de esta obra colosal, fué pintada por Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, en un lapso de 30 años. Este santuario tiene un lugar clave en la historia Mexicana. De este bello monumento, fué tomado el estandarte de la Virgen de Guadalupe, el cual tomó Don Miguel Hidalgo, para dar el Grito de Independencia en Dolores. Cerca de Atotonilco, hay lugares para pasar un gran momento. Si prefieres cocina internacional, Nirvana es un buen lugar, con un ambiente íntimo y tranquilo. Si puedes quedarte más de un día, el campo alrededor es un lugar lindo para relajarte. La Ruta de Capillas de los Indios es una manera interesante de conocer las comunidades de alrededor, y experimentar así una parte de la historia local. A Pilgrimage of Art and History
The word Atotonilco is from the Nahuatl phrase for “in hot water”. This area, 12 kms outside of San Miguel de Allende teems with hot thermal springs that for generations have been important in the lives of its inhabitants. From the very first settlements here until today visitors have flocked to these springs for healing, meditation and even penitence. Concurrently, the humidity and minerality of these same waters were the cause of the deterioration of the town’s greatest treasure: El Santuario Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, until 1996 when it was declared one of the world’s “100 most endangered monuments” and a non-profit began its restoration. In 2008, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in naming this location as a World Heritage site, called the sanctuario “one of the finest examples of Baroque art and Baroque architecture in the New Spain”, It is often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico” due to the stunning murals that grace its walls, painted mostly by artist Miguel Antonio Martinez de Pocasangre over a 30 year period. The church is an important part of Mexican history as it was the original home of the Virgin of Guadelupe banner carried by the insurgents during the war for Mexican independence. If you have time to spare or more than a day to spend, the surrounding countryside is a lovely place to get lost and the Indigenous Chapel Route (la Ruta de Capillas de los Indios) is a great way to see some of the surrounding communities and experience a part of the local history. San Sebastián BERNAL Pueblo Mágico
Al horizonte lo verás. San Sebastián Bernal, es un poblado en el municipio de Ezequiel Montes, en el estado de Querétaro. Ahí se encuentra la famosa Peña de Bernal, la cual es el tercer monolito más grande del mundo, con sus 288 metros de altura, solo por debajo del Cerro de Pan de Azúcar en Uruguay, y el Peñón de Gibraltar de la Península Ibérica. Esta enorme masa pétrea, se alza majestuosa en el horizonte de este Pueblo Mágico Queretano. Cada año en San Sebastián Bernal, se organizan peregrinaciones de mucha importancia religiosa, teniendo como destino final, el punto más alto de la peña. Los fines de semana, los visitantes de Querétaro, Tequisquiapan y Ciudad de México, colman el pueblo.
San Sebastián Bernal es una joya colonial, con un hermoso templo al frente de su pequeña plaza principal. El Museo de la Máscara es un atractivo lugar, ubicado en el edificio conocido como “El Castillo”, edificado justo a un costado de la plaza principal. Este pueblo es conocido por sus interesantes artesanías, los productos de lana y sus dulces típicos. Las gorditas de Bernal merecen mención aparte, porque se han convertido en un destino turístico por sí mismas. Algunos grupos turísticos locales, ofrecen diferentes servicios para los visitantes, como catas de vinos en casas productoras locales, tours sobre los fantasmas por las calles oscuras de la ciudad, los típicos recorridos por La Peña de Bernal. Su mobiliario antiguo y el edificio perfectamente conservado, este hotel combina lujo e historia. Otras grandes ofertas, son la Casa Mateo, en la calle 5 de Mayo, un hotel boutique con lujo y modernidad. Cuenta con una piscina y un restaurante de comida internacional. El Hotel Parador, en los alrededores del pueblo, tiene espacio amplio y una gran vista de las montañas circundantes. With a view of the horizon The Peña de Bernal, at 288m high, is the third largest monolith in the world, after Sugarloaf Mountain in Uruguay and the Rock of Gibraltar on the Iberian Peninsula. This huge, solid mass is perched majestically above the tiny, colonial town of San Sebastián Bernal, in the state of Queretaro. Every year pilgrimages are made to the highest point of the peña, a place that holds religious and secular importance to many people in the area. Each weekend, visitors from Queretaro, Tesquiquiapan and Mexico City fill the town with tourists and shoppers. The town is a hilly colonial jewel, with a small main plaza composed of a lovely chapel, a mask museum right on the square and a variety of local craft shops. This area of Mexico is known for it’s wool products and typical candies and the gorditas of Bernal have a level of fame all their own. Several tour groups offer trips to the peña, wine tasting at local vineyards and ghost tours through the town’s sleepy streets. A couple to try are Acueduc Tours (www.acueductour. pagina.gov) and Vinedos Aztecas (www.vinedosazteca.com). After or before a tour there are a handful of great restaurants to choose from. Piave (I. Zaragoza 13), serves up delicious high-end Italian delicacies like Rabbit with Polenta and Veal with yellow mushrooms. El Arrayan (I. Zaragoza 6), connected to the Casa Tsaya hotel offers gourmet Mexican cuisine, and the restaurant at Hotel Parador (Lázaro Cardenas 1) on the outskirts of town, has an incredible view of the pena and a menu full of Queretana specialities like Sopa de Habas and Pollo al Cuñete. Our favorite place to stay overnight is La Casona de los Recuerdos (Independencia 1), where each of their 7 gorgeous rooms is exquisitely and expertly decorated with a style that will transport you back in time. With antique furniture and a perfectly maintained structure, this hotel is luxury and history rolled into one. Other great offerings are the Casa Mateo on 5 de Mayo street, a fully equipped, super modern luxury ho-

tel boutique, with swimming pool and international food restaurant, the Hotel Parador outside of town with ample space and a great view of the surrounding mountains, and El Centenario (Aldama 6), a slightly kitschy, but extremely cute country style hotel with large, well-lit rooms. Bernal for the day offers a nice blend of outdoors, pena climbing and horse back riding, with activities in town like good restaurants and shopping. Los templos en Guanajuato son hermosos monumentos y sus calles peatonales hacen más fácil la contemplación de las bellezas de la ciudad. For tourists with a desire to see it all, the city is home to the famous Alhóndiga de Granaditas, one of the most infamous sites of clashes between the insurgents and royalists for Mexico’s independence. There are a plethora of great museums such as El Museo Iconografico de Quijote (Manuel Doblado 1) and the Diego Rivera Museum, set up in Rivera’s former home (Positos 47). The Mercado de Hidalgo, a massive market whose clock tower was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the famous Callejón del beso, where secret lovers once kissed across the alley, and the Teatro Juarez (Plazuela de Cata 1), an iconic theater with a Moorish inspired interior paint job are all worth a visit. Guanajuato’s churches are beautiful architectural monuments and the many pedestrian-only streets make ambling from spot to spot a delight. If, on the other hand, your ideal day is relaxation and people watching, the city’s beautiful plazas including the Plaza de la Paz, the Jardin de la Union, and the Plaza de San Fernando are overflowing with outdoor cafes, hidden bookstores and ice cream shops. There is so much to see in this tiny, big city that you might want to plan to stay for the weekend and take advantage of your time to take in the view from the Mirador del Pipila or go for a drive on their panoramic highway. Desde temprana edad, Alessandro se enamoró de los materiales textiles al jugar con ellos, y así educó sus sentidos para reconocer buenos diseños y combinaciones de texturas. Los diseños de Alessandro se enfocan mucho en el material. Con su estilo “contra-couture” crea piezas de arte para vestir. En su proceso, utiliza fibras naturales que reinventa, y modifica para lograr piezas únicas. Sus talleres, recientemente se dedican a la “reencarnación” de telas para su reciclado. Alviani has participated on 7 occasions in the International Fashion Week in Mexico and his work has been exhibited in the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Carillo Gil in Mexico City. Each piece of Alviani’s newest collection for men is pre-sold and he plans to create a book of images that will feature the real wearers of each item. The work reflects his lifestyle and what he describes as the “combination of perfection and imperfection ever present in the chaos of the world”. Alviani’s neutral color palate is often embellished with flashes of color, imbued with a minimalistic sophistication that attracts all types of admirers. The pieces have a soft, feminine side complimented by touches of the abstract and are representative of the underlying, repetitive patterns in human relationships.

Her company “Trigo Jewelry”, like a crop of carefully cultivated wheat, has emerged from its native soil after much deep imagining, tilling of the earth, and tending of seedlings. icen que a las mujeres que les gusta bailar, les gustan los aretes con movimiento. Soy un amante del movimiento, y por ello lo incorporo a mis trabajos”, dice Coral Humenry, diseñadora de joyería. Describe el momento de crear de joyas, como un acto de meditación. Al trabajar con el soplete, el artista debe de estar muy atento, un instante sin concentración, o algunos grados más de calor, podrían destruir una obra de arte. Nuestra invitada empezó haciendo joyería artesanal hace más de 11 años. Proveniente de Oaxaca, llegó a San Miguel de Allende, y encontró el taller del famoso Billy King. Trabajó con él en 2002 y 2003. Como joyera independiente, Coral encuentra su inspiración en la naturaleza. Siempre con enfoques en elementos específicos, a través del tiempo. Así fue la época, en la cual se obsesionó recreando formas de orquídeas y otras flores exóticas, en piedra y metal. En su reciente colección, utiliza el resplandor y la versatilidad del cobre, influenciado con formas orgánicas, piezas únicas, hechas a mano, por una artista apasionada en su trabajo.

hey say that women who love to dance love dangly earrings. I am a lover of movement and so I incorporate that movement into my work,” says jewerly designer Coral Humenry. She describes the act of jewelrymaking as meditation. While working with fire and the solder gun, the artist must be completely present, a moment too long or a degree too hot and you can destroy a work of art. Coral started making handmade jewelry as a young woman traveling throughout Mexico more than 11 years ago. Originally from Oaxaca, she came across the infamous Billy
King’s workshop in San Miguel de Allende and studied with him in 2002 and 2003. As an independent jewelry maker she finds her inspiration in the natural world, with periods of fixation on certain elements, such as when she became obsessed with recreating orchids and other rare flowers in metal and stone. Coral’s current collection utilizes the brilliance and versatility of copper influenced by organic shapes and forms, 100% unique and handcrafted by an artist passionate about her work.

Su coleccione más reciente, “Cruise Control”, lleva a sus seguidoras a un viaje por la Riviera Francesa, vistiendo seda, lino y piel. Quizá has escuchado algo, sobre el talento de este joven diseñador. Noé participó en la primera temporada de Project Runway Latin America, sin embargo, su formación como diseñador, inició algún tiempo antes. Noé estudio diseño, en dos reconocidos institutos italianos: Marangoni y Europeo di Design. Al regresar a México, Noé Roa crea su propia línea de camisetas y después su línea homónima para dama. Roa siente un profundo agradecimiento para sus mentores, gente como Dean y Dan Caten y el equipo de la marca Dsquared2. Con su regreso a México, Noé ha tenido la oportunidad de explorar proyectos personales, y ver sus ideas creativas, convertidas en realidad. “La satisfacción al ver un boceto, convertido en una prenda, es indescriptible”, nos cometa Noé, cerrando la entrevista.

oé Roa’s new shop in the Colonia Valle de Campestre in Leon is dedicated to what he terms “feminine, fresh, and sexy” pieces with vaporous and flowing styles for sophisticated women. His most recent collection “Cruise Control” takes its wearers on a trip down the French Riviera with pieces created using linen, silk, and leather. You may have heard of this young and talented fashion designer as one of the 15 participants in the first season of Project Runway Latin America, but his experience as a designer began much earlier. Noé studied design in Italy at the Marangoni and Europeo di Design Institutes. Upon returning to Mexico he created his own line of t-shirts, and now, his eponymous line for women. Ever grateful for his mentors and experience, such as working with the Caten twins for their brand Dsquared2, Noé feels that coming home he has finally had the opportunity to explore personal projects and watch his creative ideas become reality. “The sensation of watching an idea or sketch convert itself into a garment is indescribable.” He explains. l arquitecto mexicano Gabor Goded ha regresado a San Miguel de Allende, donde durante dieciséis años realizó cincuenta y dos obras que le valieron amplio reconocimiento profesional. En los tres últimos años Gabor Goded vivió y trabajo en Montevideo, Uruguay. Vuelve con ideas renovadas en los planos de diseño y la construcción. A partir de allí, ha creado una nueva constructora con Cruz Orduña. “Queremos una compañía con una fuerte intención social, donde el albañil tenga gran valor como pieza clave en la construcción, dándole un ambiente digno de trabajo, seguro y estable “. La idea es dar servicio a sus clientes directos y también a otros arquitectos. “Durante el tiempo que no estuve aquí, las cosas cambiaron mucho, el mercado es diferente y las necesidades del cliente también”. “En Uruguay aprendí sobre la eficiencia en la obra , todo se analiza más: tiempos, materiales, mano de obra; el conjunto es clave para lograr construir una casa con buen diseño y presupuesto justo. Con la crisis mundial, las cosas han cambiado y nos obligan a hacer todo con mayor eficiencia. El proceso de diseño arquitectónico es vital para que en la obra no surjan imprevistos. No podemos seguir proyectando ni construyendo sobre las rodillas, el trabajo en el estudio debe de ser más meditado, analizado y extendido.” Gabor comenta: “Construir involucra a mucha gente, y se requiere experiencia para encontrar profesionales. Para que una obra se termine en costo, calidad y tiempo, es necesaria una minuciosa planeación. “Siempre que entregamos una casa, pensamos en el cliente que va a vivir en ella, y queremos dejarle algo de nosotros con diseños confortables, espacios prácticos y funcionales, acordes a su estilo de vida.”

he Mexican architect Gabor Goded has returned to San Miguel de Allende. Over the past sixteen years his 52 constructions have provided him with broad recognition in his field. In the last three years Gabor Goded has been living and working in Montevideo, Uruguay. He returns with innovative ideas about design plans and construction.
