El uso del fuego es algo casi religioso para los aldeanos, una herencia directa de los mayas, para los cuales el fuego siempre fue un elemento super importante, lleno de significado, tradiciones y mitología. La cocina maya es un legado culinario de México y ahora el fuego abierto es una tradición en la cocina contemporánea de la zona.

Open fire pits are virtually a religious practice among locals, since this custom was passed down to them by the ancient Maya, for whom fire was associated with numerous myths and traditions. Los pisos y vigas son de madera reciclada de trojes antiguas, ícono de la arquitectura tradicional del estado de Michoacán. En techos y pisos predominan los tonos azulados, que generan un ambiente fresco y tranquilo. Todas las puertas fueron construidas en madera de mezquite antiguo, originario de la zona.

You are immediately welcomed by a handmade hammock which sits next to a fireplace. This artisan hammock is weaved over four months in the Wayuu style prevalent in northern Colombia. The floors and beams are made from recycled hardwood ‘Trojes’ from the state of Michoacán, which is prominent in the blue tones of the kitchen’s ceiling. All of the doors in the home are made from heavy antique mesquite wood, also from Michoacán.

Un imponente edificio a las mismas orillas del mar, cuyos muros de piedra caliza se elevan 12 metros, a lo que hay que sumar la base rocosa natural que le sirve de base. Es un punto ideal para ver el mar alrededor. Si bien, su función no sería tanto vigilar, sino guiar a los navegantes.

El Castillo is among the oldest structures of the Maya archeological sites. Perched on a stone base, this imposing edifice is located right on the ocean shore and its limestone walls reach as high as 12 meters. Although it’s a great lookout point to scan the open sea, its function wasn’t to guard against intruders, but to guide approaching boats.

Toda esta costa está protegida por un larguísimo arrecife de coral, y para los marinos mayas era un obstáculo. Por eso navegaban mar adentro en paralelo, y la presencia del Castillo de Tulum les indica un canal por el que podían acceder a la costa.

Es más cuando veían las dos ventanas iluminadas de la construcción sabían que era el momento de virar y dirigirse hacia tierra sin naufragar.

Algo que ignoraban los marinos españoles cuando llegaron, por eso se sabe que ellos sí naufragaron.

The entire coast is protected by a long coral reef, which was tricky to navigate for Maya sailors, and so to overcome this, they sailed parallel to the shore, and El Castillo served as a marker to indicate a route along which they could access the coast.

More precisely, when they spotted the castle’s lit windows, they knew it was time to turn their boats and safely head toward land—something that the first Spanish sailors were not aware of, and as the history books dictate, they did indeed sink. primavera 2019
