Today we embark on a journey through time, in the midst of this powerful cabalistic number, linked to many different stories and mysteries. For the cover of this New Year’s edition, we posed the question of where the architecture in San Miguel de Allende is going. This World Heritage city keeps winning international awards, and with them, growth comes along. We consulted two prominent architects to try to find out how these new challenges can be dealt with. The worldwide attraction San Miguel and Querétaro generate widens the range of tourism. It is therefore quite relevant to analyze each segment in depth, in order to continue providing top quality services. In this issue, we give you interesting facts regarding Adventure Tourism. For this edition, we will take a tour across three World Heritage cities: Querétaro, Guanajuato, and San Miguel de Allende. We begin our seventh year promoting the best from this region. Sus platillos son tan parecidos a los que se comen en Italia, que están a punto de recibir una certificación de la Cámara de Comercio Italiana en México, acreditando el origen de la mayoría de sus insumos alimenticios.
Acquedotto 68 is an authentic Italian restaurant. Most of their ingredients are imported directly from the bootshaped country. Their dishes are so similar to those eaten in Italy, that they are about to receive a certification from the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico, attesting to the origin of most of their food supplies.
La chef Claudia della Giusta nos hizo volar hasta Europa en cada bocado. En Acquedotto 68 los platillos son cuidados a detalle, todas las pastas y los panes son hechos en casa, no hay lugar para elementos comerciales de baja calidad. Esto no convierte a Acquedotto 68 en un lugar de precios elevados. Por ello disfrutar con familiares y amigos los más ricos sabores de Italia, en este excelente lugar no es complicado.
Chef Claudia della Giusta took us on a flight to Europe with every bite. At Acquedotto 68, dishes are meticulously prepared, their pastas and breads are made in house, and there is no room for low-quality commercial items. Al llegar a 5 de Mayo, su puerta antiquísima estaba cerrada. La pátina del tiempo en la vieja madera despertó nuestra curiosidad, durante los pocos segundos que tardó la bella pieza en ser abierta. Antes de ingresar al lugar, ya vivíamos una nueva experiencia.
Upon arriving at 5 de Mayo, we found its ancient door locked. The patina of time on old wood aroused our curiosity during the few seconds it took for the beautiful piece to open. Before entering the place, we were already living a new experience.
El cerrojo cedió al tiempo que el chef Alberto Muñoz nos dio la bienvenida. Ser saludados por nuestros nombres nos causó sorpresa. En 5 de mayo antes de conocernos personalmente, sabían quiénes éramos, cuáles eran nuestros gustos, y si podríamos disfrutar de la comida y el vino del día, sin riesgo de alguna alergia.
The lock gave way as Chef Alberto Muñoz welcomed us in. Being greeted by our names caused great surprise. At 5 de Mayo, before meeting us in person, they knew who we were, what our tastes were, and if we could enjoy their food and wine of the day, at no risk of allergy.
Los chefs Mariano Torre y Alberto Muñoz, son expertos en brindar una atención cálida y refinada. Esto se logra mediante una cuidadosa logística, donde el primer paso es una rigurosa reservación. En el interior de la cocina, Alberto nos comentó el origen de su gusto por la cocina. En un modo pausado y emotivo, recuerda cuando niño, ayudaba a su abuela a preparar deliciosos platillos. Así Mariano y Alberto rescatando tradiciones, han llegado a crear un concepto de vanguardia único en Querétaro.

Chefs Mariano Torre and Alberto Muñoz are experts in providing warm and refined attention. This is achieved through careful logistics, where the first step is a mandatory reservation. Inside the kitchen, Alberto told us about the origin of his love for cooking. In a deliberate and emotional way, he remembers helping his grandmother prepare delicious dishes when he was a kid. This is how Mariano and Alberto have come to create a unique art concept in Querétaro, while bringing traditions back to life.

In Latin America, México is the country with the most properties recognized as World Heritage Sites, designated by UNESCO. Our country comes in sixth place worldwide, just behind Italy, Spain, China, France, and Germany. The Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was held in 1972. This agreement was created by the need to identify and protect unique and irreplaceable properties for all mankind. The conservation of World Heritage Sites is the principle for sustainable thinking. These recognitions invite us to reflect on a collective idea, to see the human race as one. This list of invaluable natural and cultural monuments and sites belongs to all mankind. El estado de Querétaro al igual que la Ciudad de México, cuenta con cuatro declaratorias de Patrimonio de la Humanidad. El Centro Histórico de la capital Santiago de Querétaro, las cinco misiones franciscanas de la Sierra Gorda, los lugares de memoria y tradición otomí y chichimeca de Tolimán, y la ruta de Tierra Adentro.
The state of Querétaro, just like Mexico City, has four World Heritage designations. The historic center in the capital city of Santiago de Querétaro, the five Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda, the Otomi and Chichimeca memorial and traditional sites in Tolimán, as well as the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro trails.
En el Centro Histórico de la capital queretana, encontramos bellísima arquitectura en casonas, templos, monumentos y plazas públicas. A continuación mencionamos algunas de estas edificaciones y lugares que no puedes perderte.
Inside the capital city of Querétaro’s historic center, we can find beautiful architecture in houses, temples, monuments, and public squares. Here’s a handy list of a few buildings and places you definitely cannot miss.
En primer lugar se encuentra el Acueducto, símbolo indiscutible de la ciudad de Santiago de Querétaro. El Teatro de la República, además de su belleza arquitectónica, cuenta con una historia extraordinaria; la Casa de la Corregidora, lugar de reunión de Doña Josefa, Miguel Hidalgo e Ignacio Allende, ahora convertida en Palacio de Gobierno; la Academia de Bellas Artes y los Colegios de San Ignacio y San Fernando, son muestras de la invaluable arquitectura queretana.
The Aqueduct comes in first place for being the undisputed symbol of the city of Santiago de Querétaro. The Theatre of the Republic, in addition to its architectural beauty, is loaded with remarkable history; the Casa de la Corregidora, a meeting point for Doña Josefa, Miguel Hidalgo, and Ignacio Allende, is now the Government Palace; the Academy of Fine Arts and the Colleges of San Ignacio and San Fernando, are a few samples of Querétaro’s invaluable architecture.
La arquitectura sacra y religiosa de la ciudad de Santiago de Querétaro es vasta y exquisita. Algunos excelentes ejemplos del barroco mexicano son, el Templo y exconvento de San Agustín y el Real Beaterio de Santa Rosa de Viterbo. En la expresión del neoclásico podemos encontrar al Santuario de la Congregación y del Templo y Exconvento de Teresitas. Como la edificación religiosa más antigua de la ciudad, está el Templo y exconvento de San Francisco de Asís.
Sacred and religious architecture in the city of Santiago de Querétaro is vast and exquisite. Some great examples of Mexican baroque are: the Temple and former Convent of San Agustín, and Santa Rosa de Viterbo´s Real Beatario. As neoclassical expressions, we can find the Sanctuary of the Congregation, and the Temple and former Convent of Teresitas. The oldest religious building in the city is the Temple and Convent of St. Francis of Assisi.

En el mes de diciembre del año 1988, Guanajuato y algunas de sus minas aledañas, fueron declaradas por la UNESCO, Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Los criterios por los cuales se realizó este reconocimiento fueron 4: 1. Representar una obra de arte del genio creador humano. 2. Atestiguar un intercambio de influencias considerable, durante un período concreto o en un área cultural determina, en los ámbitos de arquitectura, la tecnología, las artes monumentales, la planificación urbana o la creación de paisajes. 3. Constituir un ejemplo eminentemente representativo de un tipo de construcción, o de conjunto arquitectónico, o de paisaje que ilustre uno a varios períodos significativos de la historia humana. 4. Estar directa o materialmente asociado con acontecimientos o tradiciones vivas, con ideas, creencias u obras artísticas y literarias que tengan un significado universal excepcional. Algunos de los sitios y monumentos inscritos dentro de la declaración de la UNESCO son: La calle subterránea Miguel Hidalgo, Alhóndiga de Granaditas Museo regional INAH, Monumento al Pípila, mirador de la ciudad, Teatro Juárez, Mercado Hidalgo, Jardín Unión, Universidad de Guanajuato, Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato, Plaza del Baratillo y la Iglesia de San Diego. In December of 1988, Guanajuato and some of its neighboring mines were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The four criteria by which this recognition was attained were: 1. Representing a masterpiece of human creative genius. 2. Exhibiting an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design. 3. Being an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history. 4. Being directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. Some of the sites and monuments included in the UNESCO declaration are: The underground Miguel Hidalgo Street, the Alhóndiga de Granaditas regional INAH Museum, the Monument to Pípila, the City Lookout Point (Mirador), the Teatro Juárez the Hidalgo Market, Jardín Unión, the University of Guanajuato, the Basílica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, Plaza del Baratillo, and the Church of San Diego. Con 153 millones de lectores y 61 millones de usuarios en todo el globo terráqueo, este poderoso consorcio distinguió a San Miguel de Allende, como la mejor ciudad para visitar en todo el mundo. Es la primera vez que una ciudad mexicana es galardonada con el número uno, por esta prestigiosa casa editorial global en el concurso “Top 25 cities of the Word”. Esta competición se logró con la votación de 16 mil de sus lectores alrededor del mundo, alcanzando San Miguel 84.6 puntos. Por debajo de San Miguel, quedaron las ciudades de Florencia, Budapest, Salzburgo, Charleston, San Sebastián, Viena, Roma, Siena y Quebec. La ciudad natal de Ignacio Allende no ha dejado de darnos satisfacciones a los mexicanos. La más alta distinción recibida por la UNESCO en el año 2009, puso a esta ciudad virreinal en la mirada del mundo. Un comité de alrededor de 800 expertos reunidos en Quebec, Canadá, determinaron darle a San Miguel de Allende el reconocimiento de Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Tal declaración se ganó por su diversidad cultural, su artesanía, y su arquitectura de gran relevancia histórica. Por ello la inscripción quedó como Bien Cultural, en la categoría de Ciudad Histórica.
El registro abarca 64 manzanas del Centro Histórico y el templo de Jesús de Nazareno, en Atotonilco. Todos los días, hay algo por descubrir en San Miguel.

Al iniciar nuestra charla con el arquitecto Roberto Burillo, nos invita a tomar lo bueno de la arquitectura virreinal, sin hacer malas imitaciones de los elementos más notorios a simple vista. Para fundamentar su propuesta menciona su primer viaje a Argelia.
As we begin our chat with architect Roberto Burillo, he invites us to take the good things from colonial architecture, without making bad imitations of the most notorious landmarks around. In support of his statement, he mentioned his first trip to Algeria.
Argelia tiene una característica muy particular, siendo el país más grande de África, esta nación se reconoce constitucionalmente como un estado árabe. De tal suerte que este país es miembro de la Unión Africana y de la Liga Árabe.
Algeria lives through a very particular situation, while being the largest country in Africa, this nation is constitutionally recognized as an Arab state. Thus, Algeria is a member of the African Union as well as the Arab League.

El arquitecto Roberto Burillo encontró gran similitud entre el medio ambiente de Argelia y el de San Miguel de Allende. Esto lo llevó a profundizar en la esencia de la arquitectura desarrollada en México en época de La Conquista. Con 781 años de ocupación árabe sobre la Península Ibérica, España tomó elementos de la arquitectura arábiga y de esta forma, la influencia árabe llegó a nuestro país. Burillo llama a retomar la excelente técnica que nos llega desde el mundo árabe, como los patios centrales y las ventanas rectangulares, poniéndolas en sintonía con las nuevas necesidades. En pocas palabras, Roberto Burillo nos invita a perderle el miedo a lo contemporáneo, respetando todo lo hecho en la época del virreinato. Como ejemplo menciona la ciudad de Toledo, España. Hablando de crecimiento urbano, la idea de Roberto Burillo es densificar las áreas poco pobladas en el Centro Histórico de San Miguel y sus alrededores. De esta forma, llegar a darle utilidad a una gran cantidad de lotes baldíos y edificios deshabitados. La obra de Roberto Burillo puede apreciarse en diversos lugares de San Miguel, empezando con la rotonda de Ignacio Allende en la antigua carretera a Querétaro y la icónica rotonda de El Pípila. De igual manera su diseño puede verse en los nuevos parabuses, hechos de piedra y acero. Una obra de Burillo de gran importancia para San Miguel, es la construcción de un excepcional paseo de la Antigua Entrada de Querétaro, hasta El Atascadero.
Architect Roberto Burillo found great similarities between Algeria’s natural environment, and the one in San Miguel de Allende. This helped him to get to know and understand the essence of the architecture developed in Mexico with the Spanish conquest. With 781 years of Arab occupation in the Iberian Peninsula, Spain was influenced by Arabic architecture, and that is how a great deal of Arabic influence came to our country during the colonial era. Burillo calls to take up the wide range of excellent techniques coming from the Arab world, such as central patios and rectangular windows, setting them in tune with new requirements and better materials. Briefly, Roberto Burillo invites us to forget our fear for the contemporary, respecting everything built during the colony. As an example of that, he mentions the city of Toledo, Spain. Speaking of urban growth, Roberto Burillo’s idea is to densify sparsely populated areas in San Miguel’s historic center, as well as its surrounding areas. This way, the great number of existing vacant lots and buildings would be put to good use. Roberto Burillo’s work can be seen at various locations in San Miguel , starting with Ignacio Allende’s roundabout on the old road to Querétaro, and the El Pípila iconic rotonda. Similarly, his designs can be seen on the new bus stops, which are made of stone and steel. The construction of an exceptional entrance from Antigua Entrada a Querétaro to El Atascadero, is one of Burillo’s works of great importance to San Miguel. SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

Jose Luis Gonzalez El arquitecto José Luis González piensa en la arquitectura del futuro al servicio de toda la gente, especialmente de quienes requieren de espacios públicos gratuitos para hacer deporte o para convivir en sano esparcimiento.
Architect José Luis González thinks that architecture in the future should be built for everyone’s service, especially those who require free public spaces to practice sports, or to live in healthy recreation.
La idea de José Luis es lograr una ambientación cada vez más agradable para toda la sociedad. Esto debe ser una labor en conjunto entre la comunidad en general y los tres niveles de gobierno, inclusive, siguiendo los lineamientos de la Organización de las Naciones Unidad para la Educación la Ciencia y la Cultura.
José Luis’s idea is to create an increasingly pleasant atmosphere for society. This should be a collaborative effort between the community and the three levels of the government, following the guidelines set by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
La integración de la arquitectura con el entorno es fundamental, lo mismo sucede con la comunidad. Una muestra de la armonía que puede haber entre la arquitectura, los trabajadores y el medio ambiente, es el Hotel Casa de Aves, ubicado en la comunidad de Montecillo de Nieto. Este es uno de los proyectos más importantes de José Luis González, que lo llevó a ganar la Bienal Regional en todas sus categorías.

An example of the harmony that can exist between architecture, workers, and the environment, is Hotel Casa de Aves, located in the town of Montecillo de Nieto. This is one of the most important projects led by José Luis González, which made him the winner of every category at the Regional Biennial. En este fascinante lugar, González contrató a personas de los alrededores, y aprovecho las condiciones topográficas accidentadas, para crear espacios protegidos por el mismo terreno. Todo el material natural generado por el movimiento de tierra, fue utilizado en la construcción de las vanguardistas habitaciones. De esta forma, la región se vio beneficiada en todos los aspectos, creando así una empresa sin chimeneas integrada al paisaje, pero quizá lo más importante, generando una armonía con cada persona que trabajó en el proyecto. Por ello José Luis González afirma que lo más importante de la arquitectura del futuro está en el proceso. La arquitectura del futuro –sostiene el arquitecto Gonzálezdebe ser una parte integral que construya el tejido social. La integración de Casa de Aves con el medio ambiente se percibe en los materiales, los trazos y los matices. El uso de las piedras extraídas de la misma zona, le da una sobria elegancia al lugar y provoca la unión con el semidesierto. Las líneas logran que la inmensa construcción a parezca pequeña. Los colores y las formas, crean una integración muy interesante desde el suelo hasta el cielo. Al pensar en Arquitectura del Futuro, generalmente pensamos en adelantos tecnológicos y enormes edificios de cristal. Por ello invitamos a dos expertos, para quienes diseñar y construir, más que un buen negocio, utilizar su trazo es un gran compromiso.

This way, the region benefited in every aspect, creating a company without chimneys that is built into the landscape, but perhaps most importantly, producing harmony among the people who worked on the project. This is why José Luis González says that the most important future architecture is in the process. Architecture of the future - maintains González - should be an integral part which strengthens the social fabric. Casa de Aves’ integration with the environment is perceived through its materials, brush strokes and hues. The use of stones collected from the same area provides understated elegance to the place, which perfectly blends with the semidesert. Lines make its vast building seem so small. The colors and forms create an interesting integration, from the ground to the sky. When we think of Building the Future, technological advances and huge glass buildings usually come to mind. So we invited two experts for whom designing and building, more than a business, is a total commitment.

Una de las actividades productivas que generan más contaminación y devastación natural es la construcción. Los espacios verdes suelen convertirse en áreas grises, las cuales captan de manera directa los rayos del sol, ocasionando un aumento considerable en la temperatura. En las ciudades ocurre un fenómeno conocido como Isla de calor. Esto se genera cuando el sol calienta la superficie, llámese asfalto, concreto o lámina. El calor penetra a las edificaciones y a su vez se eleva en una especie de rebote, trayendo como consecuencia el encuentro de energía solar de arriba hacia abajo y de abajo hacia arriba. La construcción además de acabar con la flora y la fauna, crea zonas de gran aridez y calor. Se calcula que un 60% de la población mundial vive en ciudades. Esto nos da una idea de la alta concentración de espacios grises irradiando calor. Todos estos problemas son muy fáciles de remediar con las azoteas verdes. Estos sistemas nos permiten reconectarnos con la naturaleza y mejorar nuestra calidad de vida, mientras regulamos las condiciones climáticas. Además de crear un entorno sano y armonioso, con las azoteas naturadas contribuimos a reducir la contaminación atmosférica y devolveríamos el color verde a las ciudades.

Green Roofs & Walls
One of the productive activities that generates the most environmental devastation and contamination is construction. Green spaces often become gray spaces which directly capture the sun’s rays, causing a considerable increase in temperature. In cities, a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect occurs. This happens when the sun heats the surface, be it asphalt, concrete or metal roofing. Heat penetrates the structures and, in turn, causes a kind of rebound in which a solar energy current runs from top to bottom and bottom to top. Construction, in addition to killing off the flora and the fauna, also creates areas of high heat and aridity. It’s estimated that 60% of the world population lives in cities. This gives us an idea of the high concentration of gray spaces radiating heat. All of these problems are easy to remedy with green roofs. These systems allow us to reconnect with nature and improve our quality of life while regulating climate conditions. In addition to creating a healthy and harmonious environment, with rooftop gardens we contribute to the reduction of atmospheric contamination and return much needed green to our cities.
La idea de las azoteas verdes contemporáneas nace en Alemania y toma fuerza en aquel país en la década de los 80’s. Se calcula que el 10% de todas las azoteas teutonas están naturadas. En México, el Distrito Federal es quien tiene el liderazgo en esta interesante propuesta. El impulso de los muros y techos verdes se da desde la sociedad hasta los más altos niveles de gobierno.
The idea of contemporary green roofs was born in Germany, and took hold there in the 1980’s. Approximately 10% of all German homes have rooftop gardens. In Mexico, it’s Mexico City that has taken the lead with this interesting proposition. The momentum for green technology walls and roofs is coming from regular people on up to the highest levels of government.
Otros beneficios de las azoteas verdes son, la reducción de ruido y el aprovechamiento de la lluvia y la luz solar. De igual manera se crean lugares propicios para producir alimentos, y podemos transformar un espacio de relajamiento, para después de una ardua jornada de trabajo. Other benefits of green roofs are the reduction of noise pollution, and making use of rain and sunlight. It’s conducive to growing food, and the space can be used for relaxation after a hard day at work. With green technology roofs, pollinating birds and insects can return to their original homes and migration routes, thereby restoring the ecological balance.

This water treatment plant requires qualified personnel in sustainable technology management, in which some bacteria and enzymes are responsible for cleaning the recycled water. In order to obtain crystal-clear water, the process begins with advanced filtration and decantation, in order to separate grease from water. This way, the Rosewood Hotel does not pour waste into the public sewer, but treats it in the same place, so as not to affect the community. The Rosewood Hotel’s cost savings from treating water is very significant, but the most important thing about recycling water, is providing more of this vital liquid to every resident in two different ways: the first one by reducing consumption from the city´s water supply, and the second by pumping treated water back into the public drainage system, which contributes to its proper functioning. 4x4 Multiplicando el éxito • Multiplying success Una gran noche se vivió en Calenda Restaurante. Cuatro reconocidos chefs nos deleitaron con una fraternal competencia, donde los sabores de sus exquisitos platillos programados en cuatro tiempos, maridaron de manera perfecta con los finos productos de CARNEVINO. En medio del anonimato, la propuesta de Karen Wix del restaurant Calenda abrió la noche. Un Callo de hacha montado en una espuma de patata ahumada, con un huevo de codorniz y hongos trufados con lascas de jamón ibérico. Esta suculenta especialidad se maridó con un Aberdeen Angus, de uva Chardonnay. El segundo plato estuvo a cargo del chef privado Julián García. Una tocineta bañada en pulque de manzana, con aceite de tres chiles, sazonando unos tiernos nopalitos como guarnición. El vino elegido por Julián fue un Finca Flitchman, de uva Chardonay. En el tercer acto Boris Olvera, de La Cocina de Jessi y Boris, presentó un platillo clásico norteamericano. Se trató de un cordero a las finas hierbas con un toque marroquí, acompañado de un puré de papa. El vino de su elección fue un Banrock Station, Shiraz Cabernet. Cerrando el evento, José Bossuet de Café Contento, ofreció un tamal de venado con influencia chichimeca. Inspirado en una receta de la ciudad de Tula, Hidalgo, Bossuet utilizó achiote y chile guajillo, aportando un perfume de hierba santa, con una salsa de xoconostle. El producto de la vid ideal para este platillo, fue un Banrock Station, Cabernet Sauvignon. En la primera edición del 4 x 4 de CARNEVINO, Karen Wix fue la triunfadora con el voto mayoritario de todos los comensales. Con eventos como éste, CARNEVINO continúa sorprendiéndonos y desarrollando propuestas creativas. Cada 3 meses estaremos disfrutando de estos 4 x 4, con la integración de diferentes participantes.

Calenda Restaurant was host to a great night. Four renowned chefs delighted us with fraternal competition, where the flavors of their delicious fourcourse menu were perfectly paired with CARNEVINO’s fine products. Amid the anonymity, Calenda’s Karen Wix’s proposal opened the night. Scallops mounted on smoked potato foam, with quail egg, and truffled mushrooms with slices of Iberian ham. This succulent specialty was paired with some Aberdeen Angus Chardonnay. The second course was provided by private chef Julian García. Streaky bacon bathed in apple pulque, with tres-chiles oil seasoning its tender cactus garnish. The wine chosen by Julian was a Finca Flitchman Chardonnay. The North-American-classic third act was presented by Boris Olvera, from La Cocina de Jessi y Boris. It was lamb with fine herbs and a Moroccan twist, with a side of mashed potatoes. The wine of choice was Banrock Station Shiraz Cabernet. Closing the event, Café Contento‘s José Bossuet offered a venison tamale of chichimecan origin. Inspired on a recipe from the city of Tula, Hidalgo, Bossuet used achiote and chile guajillo, providing a scent of hierba santa with some xoconostle sauce. The product of the vine selected for pairing this dish was Banrock Station Cabernet Sauvignon. The winner of the first edition of CARNEVINO 4 x 4 was Karen Wix, taking the guests’ majority vote. With events like these, CARNEVINO continues to surprise us by developing creative proposals. We will be enjoying these 4 x 4 events every 3 months, with different chefs participating.

Además de haber sido una espléndida anfitriona, Karen se llevó el voto de la mayoría al presentar su delicioso platillo de Callo de hacha montado en una espuma de patata ahumada. Para Karen, uno de los aspectos más importante de este evento fue ofrecer a los comensales algo diferente de gran calidad, donde la sorpresa fue una de las constantes de la noche. También destaca la titular del restaurante Calenda, la emoción de conocer más a sus amigos chefs al trabajar en la misma cocina. Cierra la ganadora manifestando su gran satisfacción, por haber podido realizar este evento en plena cordialidad y excelente ambiente, entre los comensales y todo el equipo de profesionales que hicieron posible pasar una gran noche.
Chef Karen Wix was the winner of the CARNEVINO 4x4 competition. In addition to being a splendid chef host, Karen received the most votes for her delicious dish scallops mounted on smoked potato foam. For Karen, one of the most important aspects of the event was to offer something different, but of high quality, to the diners, where “surprising” was one of the constants of the evening. Also highlighted by the host chef of Calenda restaurant was the emotion of getting to know her chef friends better by working together in the same kitchen. At the close, the winner expressed her great satisfaction for having been able to do the event with such friendliness. There was an excellent atmosphere amongst the diners and the entire professional team who made it a great night.

El original trabajo de la célebre artista digital, Maggie Taylor, se encuentra en exhibición permanente dentro de Camino Silvestre Casa. Su impresionante obra ahora puede ser admirada por todo San Miguel de Allende. La prestigiada artista invitada por Alfredo y Jim, es licenciada en filosofía por la Universidad de Yale y obtuvo un Master en fotografía por la Universidad de Florida en 1987. Después de diez años como fotógrafa profesional, Maggie incursionó en el mundo de la computación, para después convertirse en una aclamada artista digital. The original work of famous digital artist Maggie Taylor is on permanent display at Camino Silvestre Casa. Her impressive pieces can now be admired by all of San Miguel de Allende. Alfredo and Jim´s prestigious guest artist holds a BA in philosophy from Yale University, and a Masters Degree in photography form the University of Florida, where she studied in 1987. After ten years as a professional photographer, Maggie entered the world of computing, to then become an acclaimed digital artist. Maggie Taylor’s work is a continuous journey between painting and photography. Her works have made her a pioneer of this technique, achieved by her artistic sensibility and skills in the usage of computer design. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, the artist produces each frame using multiple scanned images, which she modifies using Photoshop, and then places them on different layers to create a single image. Sacred and religious art can sometimes seem like the same thing; however, there are clear differences setting them apart. To give two illustrations, the first one is created for worship, while the second one evokes the divine. As a result, “La Pieta” by Michelangelo Buonarroti, no matter how extraordinary, is a sculpture that does not belong to sacred art, but religious.

Lynne Gleason es una artista consumada, siempre versátil y atrevida. Con su gran capacidad y talentos, Gleason logra captar el poder, la gracia y la escencia de los caballos en esta presente exposición titulada “El Majestuoso Caballo”. Esta exposición incluye una gran variedad de estilos y técnicas y está compuesta por obra recientemente exhibida en Omán en la que se muestran caballos de raza Árabe. También se incluyen piezas de técnica mixta que forman parte de la serie “Alejandro Magno”, además abarca piezas que forman parte del libro “Todos los Caballos de la Reina” de la misma autora, asimismo se incluyen varias esculturas en bronce de la serie “Odisea Espiritual”. Después de terminar sus estudios en arte en la Unviversidad Estatal de Georgia en Atlanta y una vez recibido su diploma en la Licencia-

Lynne Gleason, consummate artist, ever versatile, skillful, dauntless, captures the power, grace and essence of “horse-ness” in her extensive current exhibit “The Noble Horse”. This exhibit includes a variety of styles, including works form her recent exhibit in Oman, showcasing the Arabian horse, mixed media work from her “Alexander the Great” series pieces from her book” All the Queen’s Horses: the work of Lynne Gleason”, and her series of bronzes, “Spirit Journey”. Having received her BFA in Visual Arts from Georgia State University in Atlanta Georgia, Gleason went on the study a variety of techniques in a variety of universities and art schools throughout the US, and also in Guam. She also studied privately with renowned artists Robert Brackman and Dan Green.

Gleason’ rich life history is reflected in her work. She is the daughter of American sculptor Ray Murray, growing up in her mother’s studio surrounded by art and art materials. As a young girl she developed a love for horses and her intimate , first hand knowledge is most evident. Later on in her adult life, while living in London, with her husband Howard who had business there, Gleason was invited to draw and paint the Royal Horses of the Queen. This body of work culminated in her book, “All the Queen’s Horses: The Works of Lynne Gleason”.

Un Símbolo
arquitectónico An Architectural Symbol San Miguel de Allende puede jactarse de poseer la edificación religiosa más reconocida del país. La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel se alza como el emblema representativo de la ciudad más bella en el territorio nacional. Y aunque es escasamente conocido que su aspecto original poco asemejaba al actual, su elaborada estructura de cantera rosa revela algunos de los secretos de su construcción.
San Miguel de Allende can boast about having the most recognized religious building in the country. The Parroquia of San Miguel Arcángel stands as the representative symbol of the most beautiful city in Mexico. And though it is little known that its original appearance was quite different, the elaborate structure of pink stone reveals some of the secrets of its construction.
Su historia comienza hacia en el año 1564, cuando el templo franciscano fue erigido en la recientemente fundada villa de San Miguel el Grande. El transcurso de más de un siglo y el extremo deterioro provocaron su derrumbe, y no fue sino hasta el periodo entre 1680 y 1690 cuando se elaboró y puso en marcha un proyecto para su reconstrucción. Dicha labor estuvo a cargo del arquitecto Marco Antonio Sobrarías.
The story begins in the year 1564, when the Franciscan parish was erected in the newly founded town of San Miguel el Grande. The passing of more than a century and extreme deterioration caused its collapse, and it was not until the period between 1680 and 1690 when a reconstruction plan was developed and launched. This work was led by architect Marco Antonio Sobrarías.

dencia Ignacio Allende y Juan e Ignacio Aldama, fueron llevados a su baptisterio para recibir el primer sacramento. Fue, esa misma Parroquia, testigo del inicio del movimiento Insurgente y del fin de la lucha por un país independiente. El estilo que en ese entonces presentaba la Parroquia, iba más acorde al aspecto actual de San Miguel de Allende. Sin embargo, existe el rumor de que un obispo inconforme con su ‘insuficiente’ belleza, decidió que el exterior necesitaba un cambio. Es así que con un presupuesto de doce mil pesos, se dice, tal obispo encomendó al albañil y arquitecto autodidacta Zeferino Gutiérrez, la tarea de darle a su fachada el semblante neogótico que ahora la distingue y ha convertido en el templo más fotografiado de México. La inspiración de Zeferino llegó en forma de tarjetas postales y litografías de grandes obras arquitectónicas en la Europa Medieval. Para lograr este proyecto, se requirió la demolición de las torres originales que databan de los siglos XVII y XVIII, y se sobrepuso la cantera tallada que la viste actualmente. Durante los trabajos de remodelación, el atrio, los nichos y la ventana coral también fueron modificados. En San Miguel de Allende, la edificación que cautivó a Maximiliano de Habsburgo, sigue causando asombro entre turistas y habitantes de esta ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Juan and Ignacio Aldama, were taken to the baptistery to receive their first sacrament. It was that same parish that witnessed the start of the insurgent movement and the end of the struggle for an independent country. The style of that Parish was more in keeping with the current appearance of present day San Miguel de Allende. However, there is a rumor that a bishop, unhappy with its “insufficient” beauty, decided that it needed a change on the outside. Thus, with a budget of twelve thousand pesos, the bishop charged the bricklayer, and self-taught architect, Zeferino Gutierrez, the task of giving the facade its now recognized Neo-Gothic countenance which has become the most photographed temple in Mexico. Zeferino’s inspiration came in the form of postcards and lithographs of great architectural works in Medieval Europe. To accomplish this project, the demolition of the original towers dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was required, and they were rebuilt with the carved quarry stone now visible. During the remodeling, the atrium, niches and choral window were also modified. In San Miguel de Allende, the building that captivated Maximilian of Habsburg still causes amazement among tourists and inhabitants of this World Heritage Site.
