MANAGER'S NOTES A warm welcome to our visitors from Malvern.

Gary and I are really looking forward to finally kicking off the league campaign at home. The lads have worked really hard with a early start to preseason and I think that the whole squad are eager to get going.

We know that we have a tough act to follow in Andy Davies, but are buoyed by the fact that majority of the squad have once again committed to the club. This squad contains some exceptional talent. Our mission is to build on last years success and to take the club one step further.

We know it will be a tough challenge with Malvern being one of a number of strong clubs joining the division. But, the lads have shown quality and potential in the pre-season win against Hallen. We have a very strong flexible squad and look to strengthen it with the return of key personnel.

I think that everyone who came to support us enjoyed the outing but Saturday's FA Cup exit was disappointing as the result didn't reflect the large parts of the game where we showed that we can compete against a quality opponent playing at a higher level.

There have been many positives in the games leading up to today's match but for me personally, the season starts in earnest tonight and we are ready.

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope.

1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League.

After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history.

Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

Aaron Clark - DEF A big strong centre half who’s no mug on the ground. Has become a key part of the defence since joining.

Kurtis Parkin - GK A goalkeeper with experience at higher levels with Willand Rovers. Has made a massive difference since moving to the area.

Pete Fowler - DEF Strong centre half and not much gets past him. Club captain who leads by example.

He’s also dangerous in the opposition penalty area.

Nathan Sage - DEF Centre back with good composure on the ball and shows good strength both on the ground and in the air.

Tom Webb - DEF Good defender who reads the game well. Likes to overlap with the left-winger and can get a good ball into the box.

Joe Guest - DEF Recent youth team player who has a bright future; will do well this year learning from the senior players; likes to run at defenders.

Mark Viner - MID Experienced centre midfielder and one of the leaders on the pitch. Good first touch and range passing, rarely gives the ball away.

Toby Bennett - MID Has matured over the years showing aggression where needed. Gets his head up well and rarely gives it away.

Marcus Wormwell - MID He is a product of the Thornbury youth teams and is a speedy winger with a good shot.

Scott MacLeod - MID Comfortable at right back or on the wing, a technically good footballer.

Nathan Irwin - MID Experienced utility player who always gives 100%; great engine and attitude; pops up with an important goal now and again!

Luke Franklin - MID Strong, quick and has good technique. Equally comfortable in the middle or out wide. A really good prospect who controls the midfield and scores goals.

James Brock - FWD As long as he’s fit, you will struggle to find a more skilful player. A real box of tricks on the wing.

Dave Jones - MID A new addition in midfield last season who has fitted in to the team well. Strong in the tackle and has good vision.

Harry Brock - FWD Signed from Almondsbury over the summer to join his brother, James at the club.

Asher Budd - FWD A quick forward with a fantastic strike and eye for goal. Has scored a lot of goals at youth level and continues to improve.

Craig Lancastle - FWD Fast and skilful striker with really quick feet. He always wants the ball and will give opposition defences a really hard time this season.

Rob Davies - GK Joined this summer to provide cover and competition to the goalkeeper spot.

MALVERN TOWN CLUB HISTORY

The club was established in 1946 as Barnard’s Green Football Club. They joined the Worcester League, where they played until moving up to the Worcestershire Combination in 1955, going on to win the league at the first attempt.

The club also won the Worcestershire Junior Cup and retained the trophy for the next two seasons, before winning it again in 1961–62.

In 1967 the Worcestershire Combination was renamed the Midland Combination. The club won the inaugural Worcestershire Senior Urn in 1973–74, before retaining it for the next two seasons; they also finished as runners-up in the Midland Combination in 1973–74.

In 1979 Malvern transferred to the Premier Division of the West Midlands (Regional) League and although they finished bottom of the division in 1982–83, the club avoided being relegated. However, they were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1991–92 season.

Despite only finishing ninth in Division One in 1993–94, the club were promoted back to the Premier Division. In 2003–04 they won the Premier Division title, earning promotion to the Midland Alliance.

A third-place finish in the Alliance in 2005– 06 saw the club promoted to Division One Midlands of the Southern League.

The club finished bottom of Division One Midlands in 2008–09 and were relegated back to the Midland Alliance. Two seasons later they finished bottom of the Midland Alliance and were relegated to the Premier Division of the West Midlands (Regional) League.

We lifted the Worcestershire Senior Urn for a ninth time in 2018–19 and have finished in the top five in each of the last five seasons.

The summer of 2019 saw our association with the West Midlands (Regional) League come to an end as we were moved across to the Hellenic League Division One West.

Exciting plans are in the pipeline with ‘Project 2020’, which will see significant developments in the club’s facilities and infrastructure during the years ahead, including a 3G surface that will be ready for use in the early part of the 2019/2020 campaign.

CHANGES AFOOT IN NON-LEAGUE

BY DAVID RICHARDSON Here we go! Nine months of twists and turns, shocks and surprises and everything in between is about to start all over again!

It seems pre-season has raced by during this sweltering summer and we’re now set for the big season opener.

There is a few changes for the 2019-20 season as part of The FA’s National League System restructuring, working towards a ‘Pure Pyramid’ for the 2020-21 season of 1-2-4-8-16-17.

One interesting law being introduced across all levels of grassroots football is temporary dismissals also known as 'sin bins'. Players dissent will result in 10-minute temporary dismissals from the pitch.

The mandatory rule change will be implemented up to Step 5 and Tier 3 and below in women's football.

Perhaps the main headline in terms of promotion and relegation this season is there won’t be Super Play-offs at Step 3. Last season the four play-off winners faced off in two oneoff finals for a place at Step 2.

This year, only the bottom two in the National League North and South with be relegated which allows for the four champions and four play-off winners at Step 3 to be promoted. This is because from the 2020-21 season, Step 2 will be increasing from 22 clubs to 24, with four

teams being relegated from each division.

Relegation from Step 3 this season will see two teams go down from each division along with two third bottom clubs with the worst pointsper-game ratio.

This means, at Step 4, the seven champions and seven play-off winners will all be promoted.

There is an eighth Step 4 division being introduced for the 2020-21 season and that will be run by the Northern Premier League – addressing some of the travelling challenges in the north of the country.

There will be 24 clubs promoted from Step 5 to 4. The 14 champions across Step 5 will go up, with second and third place in the North West Counties, Northern League and Northern Counties East also automatically promoted.

The remaining 11 second-place clubs will then be ranked on points-per-game and the four highest will be promoted.

With the remaining seven second-placed clubs – a one-season scenario – will play-off with the seven bottom-placed clubs at Step 4 for a winner-takes-all game.

There will be 76 clubs from Step 6 promoted to Step 5 – two clubs from each of the two South West Peninsula divisions and the top four from all other Step 6 divisions. The bottom two clubs in each of the 20 divisions are liable to relegation.

From 2020-21, Step 5 will increase from 14 divisions to 16 and Step 6 will reduce from 20 to 17. The United Counties League and Combined Counties Leagues have been awarded an additional Step 5 division each.

The West Midlands Regional and East Midlands

Counties are due to lose their Step 6 status.

The clubs within those divisions will remain at Step 6 subject to promotion and relegation on completion of the 2019-20 season. The Hellenic League will have its current two Step 6 divisions reduced to one which avoids operating with two divisions that are undersubscribed. Step 7 is also being aligned with County FAs to become the “pinnacle of county football”.

So there you have it! Plenty of change for this season and beyond as the FA works towards a better Non-League structure.

Saturday 3rd August - Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup 1st Round

THORNBURY TOWN 4 LANCASTLE (3), WORMWELL Saturday’s game at Adderbury was great entertainment for the neutral, with defensive errors contributing to a glut of goals. This was Town’s first ever trip to Adderbury and they almost went behind in the first minute but keeper Rob Davies pulled off a great save to keep out Buckingham’s header.

However last season’s leading scorer Craig Lancastle opened his account for the new season after 4 minutes when he picked up on a defensive mistake and shot past the home keeper, Goode. Five minutes later Town doubled their lead when a patient build up between Leighton Tuodolo and Harry Brock saw the ball again come to Lancastle who fired past Goode. At this point Thorns looked as if they would go on to win comfortably with Aaron Clark heading narrowly over from Scott McLoud’s corner and Toby Bennett’s goalbound shot was deflected into Goode’s hands.

Against the run of play Buckingham pulled a goal back when his shot from 20 yards out found the corner of the net. On the half hour mark Adderbury were level when a break down the left was finished off by Gibbins, and minutes later they went in front when Clynes header hit the post and Hamblett, following up, netted.

The second period saw Thorns start on the front foot but despite enjoying the majority of possession they struggled to create any clearcut chances. Buckingham shot wide when well placed for Adderbury and Rob Davies had to save at Gibbins feet. With 15 minutes left Park’s Northam was set up by Gibbins and he fired past Davies to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.

Town responded immediately with Craig Lancastle completing his hat trick and moments later Bennett’s shot was deflected for a corner. With 10 minutes left Harry Brock’s run took him past a static home defence and his cut back was steered home

by Marcus Wormwell for the equaliser.

But within a minute Adderbury scored again when Northam’s cross cum shot found the far corner of Town’s net to give them the lead once more and one that this time they held on to until the final whistle.

Saturday 10th August - The Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

THORNBURY TOWN 1 LANCASTLE (PEN) The Road to Wembley proved to be a short one for Thornbury Town on Saturday after a defeat in their first ever venture into the FA Cup. After a 3 hour coach journey to Bedfordshire Thorns found themselves a goal down in the first 5 minutes against their Spartan South Midlands League opponents.

Leighton pressed from the kick off and after a goalmouth scramble from a 4th minute corner, Jim Brock cleared off Town’s line but the ball fell kindly for Tommy Bryant who hammered home from the edge of the area giving Rob Davies no chance. Thorns settled after this but without creating any chances of their own but in the 16th minute Mark Viner was penalised for a challenge 25 yards out and Leighton’s Danny Webb curled his free kick round the wall and into the bottom corner to give them a 2-0 lead.

The hosts continued to press and Davies saved well from Towell and Bryant had another effort, this time finding the side netting. Thorns gradually played their way into the game and a cross in from the right found Craig Lancastle but he was quickly closed down and his shot went over the bar. Leighton’s Towell fired wide when well placed and then with 10 minutes before the break Jim Brock set brother Harry free and as he outpaced the defence home keeper McKenzie snuffed out the chance.

With just a minute left before the break Town conceded a third when Webb’s cross from the right was steered home at the far post by

Campbell. Thorns almost pulled a goal back in stoppage time when Lancastle set up Jim Brock whose effort was tipped away by McKenzie at the second attempt.

The second half saw Town playing with the wind but they still found it hard to create clear cut chances and Davies had to be alert to save a couple of shots from Murrell early on. Craig Lancastle had a shot from a corner blocked and Luke Franklin’s free kick on the hour mark went narrowly over the bar. Franklin’s long ball in the 20th minute saw Lancastle hold off Murphy and lob the ball over the head of keeper McKenzie but went narrowly wide of the post.

Although Thorns were more than matching their higher ranked opponents it was Leighton who were creating the better chances with Silford screwing a free kick narrowly wide of the post with 20 minutes left. Franklin’s crossfield ball found Marcus Wormwell and his cross cum shot flashed wide of the far post as Lancastle tried to get on the end of it.

With 10 minutes left Thorns got the goal their play had deserved when Wormwell was brought down by Silford in the penalty area and Craig Lancastle stepped up to drive the penalty past McKenzie. However Town couldn’t build on this and Leighton scored a flattering fourth goal in the 86th minute when Fredericks ran across the edge of the area before curling in a shot into the far corner of the net.

Sin Bins

Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.

For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin

If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties

THE MATCH DAY PROCESS

Dissent

Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline

Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made

Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted

If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted

If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted

If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
