MANAGER’S NOTES
Good evening and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for tonight's Hellenic League Floodlit Cup game against our opposition tonight, AFC Aldermaston. A special welcome to tonight's travelling fans all the way from Berkshire. I hope the traffic on the M4 wasn't too bad! Tonight is our last cup game for a while. And it'll be a good test for us going into some crucial league games over Christmas. AFC Aldermaston are in a similar position to us in the eastern half of Division One, so tonight will be a good test. We're back here in league action on Saturday with some away games to follow either side of christmas. We really do appreciate the great support we've had this season and it has helped our performances. Andy Davies Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

AFC ALDERMASTON CLUB HISTORY Our club was founded as AWRE Football Club in 1952 by Charles Green, Ted Hall, Gordon Carter, and Don Sharp, and were nicknamed "The Atom Men" after the newly founded Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. As the AWRE complex was still under construction when the club was established, the players used empty contractors' huts as changing rooms – carrying the tin bath into whichever building was designated for that day's football. The players were also responsible for the pitch, and would mow and mark out the pitch before the match started. The club received support from Sir William Penney during his work at AWRE on the Operation Hurricane project.
at the end of the 2006–07 season, and as a result we moved back up to Division One. 2009–10 season, was our worst season and during a very difficult time we lost 40 consecutive games, which broke the previous record of 39 straight losses held jointly by Stockport United and Poole Town. The 40th defeat came on 8 April 2010, a 2–0 loss to Downton. This was undoubtedly the worst time for the club in living memory, and it took a great effort to keep going at this time. The losing streak thankfully came to an end on 10 April 2010, when we club drew 1–1 against Warminster Town, and then finally winning the next match against Petersfield Town 2–1 win for Aldermaston, to provide a much needed boost for all of us at that difficult time.
In the late 1960s early 1970s, we changed our name, to AFC Aldermaston. In 1979 we were promoted from the Reading & District League into Division One of the Hellenic League, where we spent the next seven seasons. From 1986 until 1991 we played in local football leagues, including the North Hampshire League, before joining Division Three of the Hampshire League in 1991. We finished fifth in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. However, we were soon relegated back to Division Three the following season, where we remained until 1999.
Unsurprisingly, we finished bottom of Division One with just the one win in 40 matches, and were relegated to the Hampshire Premier League, where played for four seasons before moving to the Thames Valley Premier League for season 2014-15 when we reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, which we narrowly lost 2-1, the final of the Reading Senior Cup played at the Madjeski, which we lost 1-0 to champions Marlow, and the final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup where we lost to our local rivals Tadley 2-1.
When the Hampshire League was reorganised prior to the 1999–2000 season, we were placed in the Premier Division. When the Hampshire and Wessex Leagues merged in 2004, we became members of Division Two of the Wessex League. At the end of the 2004–05 season we suffered relegation. The division was renamed Division Two in 2006, and was disbanded
Last season we finished seventh in the TVPL Premier Division, and again reaching the final of the Reading Senior Cup only to be beaten in a fourth final 1-0 to Cookham Dean. We made a welcome return to Step 6 football as we were promoted to Division One East of the Hellenic League.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 2 FRANKLIN, H BROCK
VIRGINIA WATER 1 HILL Saturday 1st December 2018 Supplementary Cup 1st Round
Harry Brock jink past the visitors defence and fire past Jones.
Premier Division side Virginia Water, making the long trip from Surrey, were the visitors to the Mundy Fields on Saturday, but their journey was fruitless as Town progressed to the next round with an odd goal in three victory. It was an entertaining game with Virginia Water playing some good football but lacking a cutting edge with Town’s defence coping with any threat their opponents created.
The visitors clawed their way back into the game in the 37th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Josh Hill’s set piece took a wicked deflection off the wall to wrong foot Parkin and reduce Town’s lead. 5 minutes later Hill almost equalised from another freekick which seemed to be heading for the top corner of the net but Parkin got a hand to the ball and push it out for a corner.
Thorns started brightly and Harry Brock had a shot blocked by Chambers in the early moments of the game, but only 5 minutes had passed when Town took the lead. A fine move down the right saw Craig Lancastle lay off the ball to Luke Franklin who steered the ball into the net giving Jones in Water’s goal, no chance. 5 minutes later Harry Brock appeared to be brought down in the penalty area in full flight but the referee waved play on. At this stage Thorns were controlling the game and the visitors were restricted to long range efforts which posed no problem for Kurtis Parkin.
The second half saw Thorns continue to control a lot of the game and Luke Franklin’s early effort went wide of the post whilst on the hour mark his run and cross into the 6 yard box saw Marcus Wormwell blaze the ball wide when it looked easier to score. Play swung from end to end with neither side able to create any clear cut chances, although Thorns skipper Pete Fowler blocked another effort by Hill, whilst at the other end a great move led to a real goalmouth scramble with any of four Thorns players being denied. As the visitors pushed forward in search of the goal that would take the game into extra time, Thorns were able to exploit the gaps at the back with Dave Jones’ effort, after a jinking run, being blocked and then Wormwell’s shot was saved by Jones.
Town nearly doubled their lead after 25 minutes when Nathan Sage’s effort from Marcus Wormwell’s corner was cleared off the line by Samyint whilst moments later Jones denied Lancastle with a good save. However Thorns didn’t have to wait much longer for the second goal, when a move down the left saw 22

MALMESBURY VICTORIA

Over 1,800 watched Mark Viner's goal from Saturday on our twitter page with many leaving comments on Facebook!
Saturday 8th December 2018 Hellenic League Division One West On a weekend that saw victories for top two, Cheltenham Saracens and Easington Sports, a win for Thornbury was important to keep up the pressure. Malmesbury were in fifth place at the start of the day and were compact, well drilled and quick to break. In the first half, Thornbury had the majority of the possession but few clear cut chances. Malmesbury's Shane Bumphrey came closest to opening the scoring - on separate occasions he had shots blocked by Aaron Clark and twice by keeper Kurtis Parkin.
Thanks to Gary Lancastle for the footage.
The wind got ever stronger throughout the match but Thornbury continued to play their passing game. Malmesbury's centre midfield were strong and Thornbury's best opportunities came from wide on either side. As the second half progressed, Luke Franklin and Harry Brock began to get in good positions on the wings and put in crosses. It was from a fine Franklin run and cross from the left that Thornbury took the lead on the 70th minute. Having made his way to the byline on the left, Franklin's low, hard cross was expertly turned in by Harry Brock. Malmesbury pushed on to try and find the equalizer but the match was ended as a contest when Mark Viner scored Thornbury's second in the 80th minute - a corner from the right evaded the central defence and Viner athletically volleyed it into the top corner from 12 yards. This hard fought victory means that Thornbury stay in close contention with the leaders and the top three start to pull away from the field. 23

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE LATEST ROUND-UP 8th December 2018
held up the ball, fed Denton, and Denton drilled a low left-footed cross-shot that slipped through the gloves of the embarrassed Randall. That goal came after 80 minutes, and Fairford’s prospects of recovery were all-but-ended when Robbie James received a second yellow card for a foul on Price, who had skipped around James only to be crudely tripped.
Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division Ascot United 3 Fairford Town 0 The encounter matched second-placed Ascot against mid-table Fairford, and the home side were prepared for a battle to extend their four-game winning streak against Jody Bevan’s resurgent Fairford side with eight wins from thirteen. Indeed, Fairford could almost afford to relax for the first time in five seasons at this level. Each of their previous four Premier Division campaigns had seen them finish in the bottom three, and last season they relied on a relegation reprieve in the end-of-season shake-up. And, it was a fully justified one, as Bevan’s side comfortably steered their way through a windaffected first half which was largely devoid of chances. When the chances did arrive, they were in Fairford’s favour - firstly when Michael Oakes skied over in the 17th minute before Lee Allen tipped Danny Bailey’s effort wide four minutes later – although the shot would probably have missed the top right. Danny Gudger’s direct free kick then found the midriff of a well organised Ascot wall on the half hour mark, whereas Ascot’s best chance came moments later when Geoff Kibaki’s overhit cross from the by-line missed a crowd of expectant yellow shirts after Nathan Minhas and Dan Price had fashioned the ball out to the wing. Having failed to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, the Yellamen registered one with merely seconds on the clock after the restart, although ‘keeper Chris Randall stood up well to save at the feet of Minhas.
Sadly for the home side, captain Louis Bouwers then received a bemusing red card for a clumsy challenge that warranted little more than a yellow card, before Denton wrapped it up with another rare right -footed effort in added time; repeating his feat of four days earlier. Fairford substitute Mason Thompson should have found the target with a stooping header just before Ascot’s third but could only head wide, but it was Ascot’s day after extending their winning run to five matches and returning to second place in the league.
GEMS
Kibaki then shot across goal and wide as Ascot turned up the dial, although their opening goal came from a sublime 25-yard free kick from Price which flew over the wall and into the bottom left hand corner; Kibaki having shown great strength in the build up to force the crucial foul. Kibaki then smacked an upright from an improbable angle – Minhas having crossed – and although Minhas would fail to extend his own eight-match scoring run, his value as a provider would later be underlined. For Fairford, Oakes slashed wide after a neat onetwo and Bailey’s shot deflected wide for a corner, but the Yellamen settled their nerves when Minhas

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Brackley Town Saints 0 Bishops Cleeve 2 A cold and windy afternoon at St James Park. Earlier in the season Cleeve edged a thriller between the two teams in the cup and another close encounter was expected. Saints Manager Gordon Kille was missing his 3 regular centre backs through injury and drafted Bradley Walker into the side for his Saints debut.
and on 60 minutes Staten made a really poor tackle on James Watts. Staten was also injured and many were expecting that he would receive a red card when he recovered, but the referee saw it only as a yellow card offence. Saints were pressing hard now with 20 minutes to go and Kille had a good volley saved by goalkeeper Clayton, although Kille was adjudged offside. On 72 minutes Bates picked up a yellow card for an off the floor tackle that perhaps on another day may have been red. Saints were building a head of steam and on 74 minutes a great passing move through the left channel saw James Hammond scoop the ball narrowly over the bar followed 2 minutes later by a left foot shot from Hammond that was just too high after excellent approach play by substitute Caleb Chukwuemeka.
The early stages were encouraging with both teams looking to play out from the back. Cleeve showed early intent with a dangerous early cross which was tidily cleaned up by Jordan Godfrey. For 10 minutes there was not much in the game, but Cleeve had the upper hand with Saints appearing to be unusually sluggish and struggling to find space in the middle third of the pitch. On 11 minutes Ali Worby was forced into a good save from Aaron Drake who got a good head onto an in swinging corner. But a minute later Cleeve took the lead from the penalty spot after Saints were caught square and Bates found himself through one on one with Worby who clipped the striker as he toe ended the ball past him. Kennedy stepped up to calmly convert the penalty.
Cleeve broke again on 80 minutes and Kennedy came close with a clever lifted shot. Hammond and Knight then played a lovely one two that saw Knight arrow a shot just wide of goal. To their credit Saints battled gamely and were finally finding their passing range. Knight had a powerful shot saved by Clayton and Watts saw his shot blocked by the defender. Kille then tested Clayton who held firm. Cleeves defending was becoming more desperate and on 90 minutes Wright was booked for stopping Watts in full flight with a tackle more appropriate for Twickenham than a football pitch.
Cleeve cleverly controlled the pace of the game taking their time over things and generally frustrating Saints. Walker was having a busy debut and made a good defensive header from a dangerous looking corner. Saints were enjoying good possession but not in areas that hurt Cleeve and it took 28 minutes for them to create a clear cut opening when a good break down the left saw Chris Jordan played in at the far post but the opportunity was snuffled before he could get his shot away. On 35 minutes Cleeves Watts had a strong shot on goal that was well saved by Worby, and 4 minutes later Wright headed a corner agonisingly wide of the left upright. Saints were inching themselves back into the game and Ryan Knight and Godfrey both had shots but which did not trouble the keeper. On 44 minutes Cleeve landed a sucker punch when Iddles picked up the ball unchallenged in midfield and split the central defence sending Watts away to stroke the ball past Worby. There was still time for Knight to fire a further shot off target and for an awful tackle on James Watts which saw Iddles shown a yellow card. Saints licked their wounds at half time and started the second half with more intent, and although still feeling the effects of the tackle before half time James Watts found space to get a good shot away that was just wide. Cleeve were finding it harder to get forward but when they did they broke at speed and on 55 minutes only a cracking save from Worby kept Saints in the game when he tipped a dipping shot over the bar. Cleeve were defending robustly
