Thornbury Town vs Cheltenham Saracens

EDITOR'S NOTES A warm welcome to everyone who has travelled from Cheltenham Saracens for today's Buildbase FA Vase tie. Last Saturday, our supporters were finally treated to our first 3 points of the season with a 3-2 win against Clanfield, the same result as the same fixture last season! Another 5 goals in the match carries on the goal fest streak our games have had. Attendees at our games have seen 27 goals in just 4 games. Today marks our first ever FA Vase campaign, this competition, like the FA Cup, gives the club a chance to play at Wembley. Though the

FA Vase involves much less fixtures! Hopefully whoever wins today can progress all the way to emulate fellow Hellenic League side Thatcham Town's success in 2018. Inside today's programme we've got reports from both of our other adult sides, with Jake and James reporting on how pre-season has gone! Thank you for all your support, Tom Shorey Media Secretary & Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

In 2015/2016 the club narrowly missed out on winning the Division 1 title but secured promotion to the Premier Division by finishing second, however the club decided to remain in Division 1. RESERVE TEAM

MANAGER'S REPORT Pre season has been the same as many other amateur teams I imagine, different players showing up to training each week, some not returning, holidays getting in the way of preseason games. I am happy with the work that has gone on in pre season, Simon Evans has joined me at the helm and bought a few players with him who aren’t lacking in ability! We started off our pre season friendlies against Charfield, unfortunately this ended in a 5-3 loss, defensive errors didn’t help the score line. We then faced ‘rivals’ Real

Thornbury at the Mundys and managed to win 3-2, a really strong performance that I was proud of, near enough the whole team playing in their first season of adult football made a great impression that night. In front of a fair few supporters as well! Shortly after is when Simon joined me and the help he has provided so far has been magnificent! The first chance I got to look at his new recruits was against Lion FC Reserves last Saturday, we won 9-1 and played them off the park, with a team that hardly knew each other’s names. Tuesday night saw us take on Thornbury Veterans at another busy Mundys, this game was there for the team to get used to playing against older teams, with know how on how to play the game, the young legs aided a 6-0 win and puts us in good shape moving into Thursday nights final fixture of a busy week away at Berkeley Town Reserves.

performance against a team three divisions higher than we will be playing this season.

A TEAM

MANAGER'S REPORT It’s been a busy pre season for the third team filled with bleep tests, circuit training and plenty of laps of The Mundy Playing Fields. We have played a total of four 90 minute matches as well as a handful of 60 minutes in the GFAs Summer League. After draws against Quedgeley Wanderers and Dursley Town, we went on to record a 3-2 win against Greyfriars thirds who fielded a strong team including several first team players. Our final match of pre season was up against local rivals Olveston United Reserves and ran out comfortable 1-0 winners in an impressive

There have been a number of new additions to the team and two of the most notable performances came from Matt Chapman and Brad Jenkins up front who have linked up for several goals throughout preseason. Jon Organ has been another strong addition to the squad who scored the winning goal against Olveston and can be described as the metronome of the side. He just keeps things ticking over. We look forward to getting our season started on the 7th of September at Marlwood school in a 14:30 kick off against Westerleigh Sports Reserves. Westerleigh finished 11th out of 12 last season so Town will be hoping to get off to a strong start to the new season.

GUEST ARTICLE

BY HUGO VARLEY, NON-LEAGUE PAPER This season has heralded the news that yet another island team are hoping to enter the Non-League pyramid. Following in the footsteps of Guernsey, who play at Step 4 and the newly formed Jersey Bulls, who are currently competing in Step 6, a group from the Isle of Man have unveiled plans to create their very own football club, with ambitions to play in the Northwest Counties League in time for the start of next campaign. This is brilliant news both for the Non-League system and players and fans living on the Isle of Man. Last year I went to visit Guernsey, where I thoroughly enjoyed watching a match and have subsequently interviewed their manager Tony Vance on a number of occasions. It was brilliant to see how the island’s community had really embraced the team and the atmosphere on matchday was a superb thing to be a part of. When speaking to Vance it quickly becomes clear just how much pride he has taken in the project and the importance that it has had in developing young players on the island. Whereas before, making the jump into the professional ranks was extremely hard for

24

young footballers on the island, they now have the opportunity to showcase their talents in England throughout the year. One of the big drawbacks of starting an island team is the high costs involved, which include having to pay for the travel of both themselves and their opponents, however both Guernsey and Jersey Bulls have demonstrated how, with the support of their local communities, these steep financial commitments can be managed. The fact that Jersey Bulls were able to attract almost 1000 fans for their very first fixture at the start of the month shows both how island clubs can develop revenue and help to cultivate a special following across the community. The Isle of Man bid is being led by National Team manager Paul Jones. When interviewing him last week I was immediately struck by his immense passion for football on the island and his determination to see the project through There have been plans in the pipeline to start a team on the Isle of Man for almost 15 years but for one reason or another the project has never come to fruition, until now I wish Paul and his colleagues the absolute best of luck in creating a club because these island teams have the potential to unite their communities in such a unique way.

THORNBURY TOWN 3 H. BROCK, J. BROCK, FRANKLIN

CLANFIELD 85 2 MAYS, HISCOCK Despite the absence of leading scorer Craig Lancastle, Thornbury Town secured their first win of the season on Saturday with a battling performance against visitors Clanfield. However it was Clanfield who took a 1st minute lead when they attacked straight from the kick off and a misunderstanding at the heart of the Thorns defence allowed Kevin Davies to slot the ball past Kurtis Parkin. They almost doubled their lead a minute later but Isaac Oliver miscued his shot at the far post. Town gradually clawed their way back into the game and Marcus Wormwell’s effort from just inside the penalty area went narrowly wide. 15 minutes in, Brandon Benjamin appeared to be brought down by Clanfield keeper Zoldan but the referee waved away appeals for a penalty. Minutes later the same two were in action again with Zoldan saving at Benjamin’s feet as he latched on to Jim Brock’s cross. The visitors looked dangerous on the break but the closest they came to extending their lead was Robinson’s free kick which he curled into the side netting. First half stoppage time saw both sides reduced to 10 men when a clash between Marcus Wormwell and Clanfield’s Kevin Davies gave the referee no option but to show both players a straight red card.

26

Thornbury Town vs Cheltenham Saracens

Thorns made the perfect start to the second half when after just 3 minutes Luke Franklin made a strong run into the Clanfield area but his shot cannoned back off the post. However Harry Brock, following up, despatched the rebound past Zoldan to equalise. Things got even better 10 minutes later when a patient Town build-up saw Franklin backheel the ball to Jim Brock in the penalty area and he slotted the ball into the net to make it 2-1. Harry Brock was in action again shortly after and after weaving his way past the Clanfield defence, shot straight at Zoldan. Midway through the half Toby Bennett’s effort from the edge of the area didn’t carry quite enough power and Zoldan was able to save at full stretch. However Thorns didn’t have long to wait to extend their lead further when Harry Brock was brought down in the area and Luke Franklin made no mistake from the penalty spot. With the game won, Town conceded a sloppy goal in stoppage time with the visitor's Joe Hiscock allowed time and space to lob the ball over Kurtis Parkin’s head and although Ollie Rawnsley cleared off the line Hiscock followed up to net a consolation for Clanfield.

Tuesday 13th August - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West

THORNBURY TOWN 3 LANCASTLE (3)

MALVERN TOWN 5 TURNER (2), EVANS (2), CLARK Spectators at the Mundy Fields last Tuesday may well have seen this season’s League Champions in action when Hellenic League new boys Malvern Town made their first ever visit. Malvern proved to be a strong, competitive side with clinical finishers but that said, Thorns matched them for much of the game. With a bit more luck Town may even have got the draw their play deserved. It was an entertaining game with plenty of chances at both ends and Craig Lancastle tested the visitor’s keeper Whitcombe early on following Harry Brock’s run and cross. However, it was Malvern that took a somewhat fortunate lead in the 9th minute when a long ball into Thorns’ penalty area rebounded off the unfortunate Tom Webb and into the net. Town responded almost immediately with Brandon Benjamin’s header going wide of the far post but in the 14th minute Joe Guest’s cross from the right found Lancastle who was unceremoniously brought down in the area. Thorn’s striker picked himself up and rifled the resultant spot kick past Whitcombe. The visitors regained the lead midway through the half when Kyonn Evans outpaced the Town defence and slotted the ball past Rob Davies. However, Malvern’s lead again only lasted 5 minutes when Harry Brock and Benjamin linked up down the left flank and Benjamin’s cross into the area was steered home by Craig Lancastle. Play swung from end to end but it was Thorns creating the better chances and a couple of minutes before the break Whitcombe did well to smother Harry Brock’s

goalbound shot. Brock was again in action at the start of the second half when he outpaced his marker and played a 1-2 with Toby Bennett with the resultant shot curling narrowly over. This near miss seemed to stir Malvern into action and Tom Webb made a last ditch tackle before Smith headed straight at Rob Davies. However, they regained their lead 8 minutes in when Evans cross from the left was headed in at the far post by Harry Clark. Thorns had a good chance to level after 20 minutes when Brock’s run into the area caused panic in the visitors’ defence and Lancastle and Marcus Wormwell both had shots blocked before a swift counter-attack saw Matt Turner break clear and his shot from inside the area rebounded off the post and into the net. With 20 minutes left some desperate Malvern defending saw Harry Brock’s effort blocked on the line. However, Town managed to pull a goal back when they won another penalty after Craig Lancastle was brought down once more. This time his spot kick was saved by Whitcombe but Lancastle rifled home the rebound. With Malvern having a player sin binned Thorns saw the chance of finding an equaliser but as they pressed forward, they were caught by a quick counter attack which saw Evans score his second of the night and wrap up the points for Malvern. Despite the result Town can take a lot of positives from what was their best performance of the season so far.
