Thornbury Town v Cribbs
EDITOR'S NOTES Welcome everyone to today's Buildbase FA Vase game against Cribbs. It's been a while since we were both playing in the Gloucestershire County League, and lots has changed since! Cribbs, who you might remember being Cribbs Friends Life when they won the County League, are now at home in the Premier Division of the Western League. After playing teams at a similar level in the Vase up until now, this is our first test against a step 5 club. I'd like to welcome all the media who have come today. Big thanks to Tony Incenzo from talkSPORT and Ned Payne who have
helped with publicity in the run-up to today! Ned's article is on page 11. Tony talked about today's game on talkSPORT2 on Friday morning, you can listen again on their website (Link on our social media). Also we have blogger "TheMowdog" here who will be documenting the match. Look out for his videos and articles on themowdog. blogspot.com Last but not least, today marks the return of Andy Davies who is now the Cribbs assistant manager. I'm sure it will be weird for him to be in the away team dugout this afternoon, please help him if he gets lost! Jokes aside, after being the club's most successful manager I hope he gets a warm welcome. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY
It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final
4

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous
winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

CRIBBS FC
CLUB HISTORY Cribbs Football Club (Cribbs FC) are currently in their 59th season since they were founded back in London in 1958 as ‘Sun Life Assurance’. The Bristol team was established in 1976 when Sun Life first relocated to Bristol. Initially they ran two teams in the Bristol and Avon League, playing at Dundridge Farm. However, when the Cribbs Causeway (now The Lawns) ground was opened in 1978, the 1st team were promoted straight to the Avon Premier Combination League where they stayed for 20 years until they eventually won promotion to the Gloucestershire County League by winning the re-named Bristol Premier Combination in the 1999/2000 season. In the 1998/1999 season the 1st team finished runners up to Roman Glass St George in both the Combination & Premier Combination League Cup. In 1997/1998 the 1st team also finished runners up, after a replay, to Ridings High in the GFA Senior Amateur Cup. The club adopted the name of AXA Sun Life FC at the end of the nineties following the merger of the AXA Equity & Law and Sun Life Assurance Society, and became AXA FC in 2002. At the end of the 2010-2011 season, following the acquisition and merger of AXA Sun Life & Friends Provident, we became the Cribbs Friends Life Football Club. At the end of June 2013, with the closure of the companies Cribbs Friends Life Sports & Social Club and with the creation of the new volunteer run, Cribbs Sports & Social Club at “The Lawns”, we renamed ourselves as Cribbs Football Club. Today the Club runs four Saturday sides (until 2004/2005 season there were five Saturday sides), spread across the Toolstation Western, Bristol Premier Combination and Bristol & District Leagues. On a Sunday we have 1 side in the Regional League Premier Division (who won the Gilbert Pullin Sunday Cup in 2003/2004 & 2013/2014 season and were runners up in 2006/2007 season) and 1 Vets side who play in the
8
Thornbury Town v Cribbs
Casuals League. In addition, we have run one Under 18’s team for five seasons in the Bristol North Division of the Bristol Premier Combination U18’s league. At the start of the 2012/2013 season this was increased to two Under 18’s teams with the formation of the Colts who play in the Bristol Central Division of the league. The clubs 3rd team won the GFA Minor Cup in the 2004/2005 season when beating Winterbourne United’s 3rd team in a tight and tense final where the “evergreen” John Hembrow was man of the match. The 1st team reached the semi final stage of the Les James League Cup on three occasions since joining the county league in the 2000/2001 season. They unfortunately lost on all three occasions, against Ellwood on penalty kicks in March 2005, 2-1 against Highridge United in March 2006 and against Hardwicke, 1-0 in 2008. At the start of 2007/2008 season the football club embarked on an ambitious change of direction that they hope would lead to their 1st team being a regular top 3 side in the Gloucestershire County League, and possibly higher. At the end of the 2010/2011 season, under the tutelage of Gavin Tufton (in his second spell in charge) and assisted by Matt Shaughnessy, the 1st team finished runners up in the Gloucestershire County League. Unfortunately, promotion to the Toolstation Western league wasn’t possible as the league champions, Brimscombe & Thrupp, had applied and been granted promotion to the Hellenic League. With planning permission having been granted for floodlights to be installed and stands to be built, the 1st team went one better in the 2011/2012 season and completed the league championship & league cup double (never been achieved before). This was obviously a fantastic achievement and meant the much anticipated promotion to the next level of the pyramid system and entry into the Toolstation Western League for the start of the 2012/2013 season. The floodlights & stand were installed in August 2012 and the lights were first used for the 1st team’s home league game against Hengrove Athletic on 16th October 2012.
The 2011/2012 season was probably the most successful year in the club’s history with not only the 1st team completing the double and gaining promotion as in addition the 2nd team gained promotion to the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination and the 3rd team were also promoted to Division 3 of the Bristol & District League. The 2012/2013 season continued in the same vain with the 1st team finishing 8th in their first season in the Western League and the 2nd & 3rd team’s all being promoted. In addition, the U18’s won their league and came runners up in the League Cup Final. 2013/2014 season was another good season for the club with the 1st team finishing 5th and qualifying for the 2014/2015 season’s FA Cup together with being runners up in the Les Phillips Cup Final. The 3rd team won promotion again and the Sunday team won the Gilbert Pullin League Cup. 2014/2015 was yet another successful season for the club with the 1st team finishing in 3rd place in Division One after a very hard fought & close battle with Barnstaple Town & Welton Rovers for the major honours. This was enough to secure promotion for the first time to the Premier Division of the Toolstation League for the 2015/2016 season. The 4th team also gained promotion up the Bristol & District league. The progress of the club continued on an upward trend during the 2015/2016 season with the first team finishing a respectable 15th in their first season in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League. The reserves were runners up to Mendip Broadwalk in a thrilling finale to the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination. The 3rd team also finished runners up in Division One of the Bristol & District league which as a result meant promotion to the Senior Division for the 2016/2017 season. The Sunday team won the Regional League Cup. The Under 18’s also won their league and were runners up in the league cup.
Premier Combination League and the League Cup. The 3rds & 4ths both had respectable mid table finishes in the Senior and 4th divisions of the Bristol & District League. The Sunday team finished runners up in both the Premier Division of the Bristol Regional League and the Gilbert Pullin Trophy. Finally, the U18’s (after a play off) finished runners up in the Central Division of the Bristol Combination league and won the League Cup. In the 2017/2018 season the 1st team finished 11th, 2nds were runners up, 3rds mid table and the 4th team finished 4th place. The under 18s finished 3rd and the Sunday team once again finished in runners up in the Bristol Regional League. The 2018/2019 season was the most successful in the club’s history with the 1st team winning the GFA Challenge Trophy, the reserves winning the treble (league, league cup & GFA Senior Amateur Cup) and the U18s also won their league. With our excellent junior section (Shire Colts/ShireCribbs) also continuing to thrive then we are expecting the progression of the football club to continue for many years to come. The club is well known for the tremendous facilities. The England Under 21 side then managed by Peter Taylor trained at the ground in 1997 and indeed played a Cribbs FC (then AXA) side prior to their game with Italy. There have also been two games televised on Sky Sports Soccer AM programme between Cribbs FC (then AXA) teams & celebrity sides. Our groundsman has won the national FA Groundsman of The Year Award for Step 5 & 6 in 2014 & 2016 and he has also been nominated again for the 2017 awards. Since the start of the 2012/2013 Bristol Rovers Football Club use the facilities as their permanent private training base and this also included their Academy team for just the 2013/2014 season.
The outstanding progression of the club continued in the 2016/2017 season with the 1st team finishing 8th (without a playing budget) in only their 2nd season in the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League and finishing runners up in the Les Phillips Cup. The “Double Winning” reserve team won both the Bristol

Thornbury Town v Cribbs
MATCH PREVIEW
BY NED PAYNE Andy Davies – the most successful manager in Thornbury Town history – hopes inside knowledge can help him end his former club's FA Vase adventure today. The 62-year-old ended a glittering six-season spell at Thorns in May with the aim of taking a break from the game, but he could not stay away and became Tony Beecham's assistant at Western League Premier Division outfit Cribbs earlier this month.
Davies, who has also coached at Bristol Manor Farm and Hallen, took the reins at Thornbury in October 2013 with the club bottom of the Gloucestershire County League Premier Division. His first game in charge was an improbable 8-7 home defeat to Bristol Telephones. Having steered his team to survival, Davies oversaw three consecutive fourth-place finishes and a Les James League Cup final triumph. Thornbury bagged a memorable league and cup double in the 2017-18 season before storming to third in Hellenic One West the following campaign, coupled with victory over Wallingford Town in the Supplementary Cup final.
Now Southmead-based Davies is hoping to halt Thornbury's maiden voyage in the Vase, a competition in which they have already earned a minimum of £2,400 in prize money.
Since taking over from Davies, former Yate Town under-18s boss Rees has piloted Thornbury to Vase wins over Cheltenham Saracens, Wokingham & Emmbrook and Downton, but this will be the first time they have faced a team from higher up the pyramid.
“I couldn't believe it,” said Davies, reflecting on his reaction to a tie with the Hellenic League Division One West high fliers.
“All at the club are very excited by the draw,” said Rees. “The game has the added element of the relationship between the clubs.
“You can't write that sort of stuff. I had just joined Cribbs and the week after, we got drawn against Thornbury.
“I have known Tony for many years and I’m sure Andy will receive a warm welcome on his return.
“I shall tell the lads about their strengths and weaknesses and what we may be able to exploit. “But Thornbury are a good side and we can't be complacent. They are right up there in the league and Jason (Rees, manager) and Gary (Kemp, assistant) have done a good job so far.
“This will be a genuine test of our progress.” Cribbs' best performance in the Vase came last season, when they reached the fourth round before being knocked out by Southamptonbased Sholing. Beecham's men have won four of their 13 games in the Western Premier this campaign.
“I hope they get into the Hellenic Prem because that's where they should be. They have a great chance, so good luck to them.”

Saturday 5th October - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West
THORNBURY TOWN 8 H.BROCK (2), FRANKLIN, LANCASTLE (2), WEBB (2), WORMWELL
NEW COLLEGE SWINDON 1 HISCOCKS Bottom of the table New College were the visitors to the Mundys on Saturday and from the very first minute there was only going to be one winner. Despite missing four key players Thorns made a quick start and in their very first attack good build up play set up Harry Brock whose shot from 10 yards out gave McGill in the College goal no chance. The enthusiastic but limited College side frequently gave the ball away and it was no surprise when Luke Franklin doubled the lead 9 minutes in with a shot from the edge of the box into the corner of the net. However the visitors pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later when Joe Hiscocks powerful shot slammed against the inside of the post and cannoned past Dan Taylor, making his debut in the Thorns goal. New College enjoyed their best spell after this but never seriously troubled the Town defence and midway through the half Craig Lancastle made it 3-1 when he picked up the ball from a Marcus Wormwell cross, skipped past his marker and steered the ball past McGill. It was 4-1 after 28 minutes when sustained Thorns pressure saw the ball fall to Harry Brock who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. Town wasted a couple of other good chances and McGill pulled off a good double save to deny Brock and Lancastle.
24
Thornbury Town v Cribbs
The second half was a repeat of the first with the visitors under pressure and Tom Webb scored twice in a minute 5 minutes after the restart, his first a close range finish at the far post and his second a lob over the stranded McGill into the far corner of the net. The young visitors never gave up and Hiscocks came close to netting their second goal in the 63rd minute but his shot rebounded off the post whilst a couple of minutes later Taylor pulled off a good save to deny the striker. However GAP SUPPLIES further goals from Marcus Wormwell and Craig Lancastle emphasised Thorns dominance and but for some wayward shooting Town could easily have recorded double figures against the gallant but outclassed visitors.

Saturday 12th October - Buildbase FA Vase 1st Round
DOWNTON 0 THORNBURY TOWN 4 WEBB, H. BROCK, LANCASTLE, FRANKLIN Another road trip in the FA Vase for Thornbury – this time to Wiltshire after the morning inspections deemed the pitch fit for play. With one enforced change - captain Toby Bennett missing out due to concussion sustained the week before - Thornbury were confident of victory despite being the bookies underdogs. Downton claimed the first of their corners in the first minute only to be cleared by the first of many Brandon Benjamin headed clearances. The 3rd minute saw good work from Harry Brock down the left and Tom Webb continued his run into the box where he finished from close range. The next half an hour saw Downton have most of the possession albeit mainly in their own half although the Thornbury defence, with Guest and Sage outstanding at the heart of it, had to work hard to contain the Downton numbers 8, 9 and 10. Just after the half hour mark a Rhys Hodgson shot was well saved with a couple of shots at the other end saved by Kurtis Parkin. On 39 minutes a long ball was not dealt with by Downton and Brock was able to lob the advancing keeper and Thornbury had doubled their lead with a goal out of nothing.
Downton finished the half with a couple of tame efforts and at the break it remained 2-0 to the visitors. Thornbury, as they have recently, started the second half slowly but on 51 minutes the ball found its way to top scorer Craig Lancastle and he made no mistake, shooting low into the bottom corner for a 3-nil lead. Downton were never going to go down without a fight though and on the hour, Parkin was forced to make three saves in quick succession. Benjamin had a couple of efforts saved with ten minutes remaining, but Thornbury guaranteed their progress with a last-minute Luke Franklin goal from the edge of the box. So, the final whistle and 4-0 to the visitors, leaving the home supporters wondering how it had happened – Downton having edged the possession, shot and corner stats. But it’s the goals stat that matters, and Thornbury were in the draw for the second round made at FA HQ on Monday lunchtime. The outcome, a home tie with Cribbs FC from the Western League Premier Division to be played over the weekend of 2/3rd November. Man of the Match – Joe Guest (Thornbury Town) a great captains performance at the heart of a well-earned team clean sheet.

Saturday 19th October - Bluefin Sports (UHL) Supplementary Cup
NEWENT TOWN 1 (4) WOODWARD
THORNBURY TOWN 1 (2) LANCASTLE Another week, another cup – this time the Hellenic League Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup which Thornbury had won the season before. With an eye on the top of the table clash at Malmesbury Victoria on Tuesday evening it was a much-changed side that took the field for Thornbury with only five remaining from the FA Vase win the previous week. The first ten minutes saw a cagey affair with just the one effort from each side but the next ten saw a Newent goal disallowed for offside and a Lancastle effort cleared off the line before the end of the half saw both sides wayward shots clearing the clubhouse and netting respectively. Harry Brock replaced the injured Marcus Wormwell (gluteus maximus) at the start of the second period and three minutes in Thornbury had the ball in the net but Lancastle was adjudged offside. A couple of minutes later a Newent forward somehow managed to miss an open goal and the next half an hour saw both sides looking as if they didn’t want to decide the tie in the 90 minutes. On 80 minutes however a run from Joe Guest saw him brought down in the penalty area and Lancastle went straight down the middle to take the lead. It lasted less than three minutes though as Newent made it 1-1 on 83 mins.

Thornbury Town v Cribbs
In stoppage time a Franklin free-kick found Dave Jones whose shot hit the post with the whistle coming soon after. So, into extra time… A strong start from Thornbury saw a long ball find Lancastle who finished well to re-take the lead. Nathan Sage replaced the injured Farthing and it looked like the plan was to defend the lead slightly deeper with tired legs all round. However, at the half time break with Thornbury leading 2-1, and taking everyone by surprise, it was brought to the referee’s attention that the game should have gone straight to penalties! After lengthy discussions and confirmation that the league had been contacted, the referee selected the end for the spot kicks and despite their obvious frustration Thornbury had little option… In front of very noisy home fans the shootout saw Newent run out 4-2 winners with the home ‘keeper saving two attempts to take them into the next round.
Tuesday 22nd October - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West
MALMESBURY VICTORIA 1 PARKER
THORNBURY TOWN 2 H.BROCK, LANCASTLE Second vs third in the league with Thornbury reverting to the starting XI and 4-4-2 formation that had won in the FA Vase ten days earlier. A Craig Lancastle cross shot hit the bar in the first minute, but the first quarter of the game was even with the only shots from outside the area as final balls went astray - in fact, it was the physical challenges in midfield, especially from Brandon Benjamin, that were the main talking point. Rhys Hodgson had the best effort of the half when the home keeper saw the ball late and just managed to keep it out of the bottom corner. The first corner wasn’t awarded until the 42nd minute when Malmesbury failed to trouble Parkin in the away goal and it was nilnil at the break.
Parkin produced the save of the match to maintain that lead with ten to go and in stoppage time Brock was brought down in the area with Lancastle doubling the visitors lead from the spot. No clean sheet though as the Malmesbury No.9 scored with a back-heel with virtually the last kick of the game. A well-earned three points for a battling performance from Thornbury who are back up to second, behind Hereford Pegasus on goal difference but with a game in hand.
Thornbury started the second-half strongly for a change with several shots in the first few minutes but it was the Malmesbury No.9, a handful all evening, who came closest before being sin-binned for comments to the referee. Thornbury failed to take advantage of the ten minutes with an extra man but on 77 mins a ball from Benjamin found Harry Brock who netted for the lead.
