MANAGER’S NOTES
Good evening and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's Hellenic League Division One West game against Easington Sports. Happy new year! Hope you have had a good christmas break. Thank you to everyone who came to support us on the road over the past couple of weeks at Cirencester and Clanfield. Unfortunately our game against against Clanfield wasn't our best performance, but hopefully we'll put on a better showing today now we're at home. It'll be a big challenge today, but hopefully we can prove why we deserve to be at this end of the table. Andy Davies Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

Thornbury Town V Easington Sports
EASINGTON SPORTS CLUB HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service.
proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi-professional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members).
The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.
Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income.
The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon).
Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sports have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or wellsponsored opponents has not been too bad a record.
Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they
The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an 10
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start & platform to their careers.
It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth.

THORNBURY TOWN 1 BENNETT Saturday 22nd December 2018 Hellenic League Division One West
The second half saw the hosts quickly out of the blocks and in the 1st minute a superb Kurtis Parkin save denied Walsh an early equaliser. Walsh then almost got on the end of Hargreaves cross but again Parkin got there first. Thorns chances were few and far between although a weaving Lancastle run into the box set up a chance for Marcus Wormwell but a timely tackle by Woods snuffed out the chance.
Thornbury Town’s trip to the Corinium Stadium on Saturday proved to be a tough test but Thorns held on to secure a valuable 3 points. The hosts started brightly and pressed forward looking for an early goal with Walsh and Hibbs having long range efforts comfortably dealt with by the Town defence. However it was Thorns who had the first clear cut chance after 10 minutes when home keeper Ayres miscued his kick straight to Craig Lancastle, who laid the ball off to Toby Bennett but his shot didn’t have enough power and the ball was cleared off the line.
Cirencester looked the most likely to score with Miles Arnold’s shot curling wide of the far post before moments later Max Arnold’s dangerous looking cross was deflected out for a corner. The hosts continued to press but couldn’t find a way past Parkin who firstly tipped one close range effort on to the bar before quickly recovering to save the follow up shot.
Thorns were beginning to settle at this stage and Tom Webb’s cross across the face of the goal was crying out for someone to supply the finishing touch, but the chance went begging. Town were beginning to dominate possession but struggled to create clear cut chances but after a series of corners eventually took the lead in the 29th minute. Marcus Wormwell’s corner was met by Aaron Clark at the far post and his knock down reached Toby Bennett who fired home from close range.
Substitutions seemed to steady the ship for Town in the latter stages and they began to enjoy a bit more possession without seriously looking to extend their lead, although a couple of dangerous crosses into the area caused some panic in the home defence. Thorns will look back on this as a hard earned three points and few teams will visit Cirencester and come away with a win under their belts.
Thorns went in search of a second goal before the break but the closest they came was a Luke Franklin effort from the edge of the area that went narrowly wide.

CLANFIELD (85) 5 OWN GOAL 45, FULLERTON 55, 70, GIBBENS 63, KIMBER 80.
THORNBURY TOWN 0 Saturday 29th December Hellenic League Division One West
Fullerton sending James Lewis the wrong way from the spot. Thornbury Town didn’t give up and Asher Budd and Jim Brock provided some extra energy from the bench to push for a consolation goal. However, they had to rely on set pieces for the best of their chances. First, a Pete Fowler header from a corner going narrowly over the bar. Not soon after, Luke Franklin came close with a free-kick on the edge of the box.
Both sides struggled to get to grips with the sticky uneven surface at Clanfield, a contrast to the flat artificial pitch at Cirencester a week earlier. It took 10 minutes for the first chance of the game when James Lewis, standing in at goalkeeper for Kurtis Parkin, pulled of a fine save when a Clanfield striker beat the offside trap.
Clanfield put the game well and truly to bed, when Fullerton tried to lob James Lewis from the edge of the area. The ball fell short of the line, however the covering defender was unable to clear before Nathan Kimber arrived to score Clanfield’s fifth.
Minutes later Clanfield’s Jordi Mulvany rounded Nathan Sage and forced a corner. The resulting corner sparked shouts that the ball crossed to line, but the assistant referee deemed it not a goal after a last ditch block from Thornbury. Thornbury’s first chance came 20 minutes in to the game when Marcus Wormwell cut in from the left and had a low shot towards the bottom right corner, only to be tipped wide by Clanfield goalkeeper Jamie Zoldan. With the last moments of play in the first half, another Clanfield counter attack ended with winning a corner after Tom Webb made sure that Clanfield didn’t find themselves through on goal. The corner however posed problems again for Thornbury with James Lewis putting into his own net. After the half time break, Clanfield came out an even stronger side and just 3 minutes after the restart doubled their lead. Nathan Kimber squared the ball across goal to Jozef Fullerton who had beaten his marker for an easy tap in from 10 yards out. Clanfield then added a third when Josh Gibbens got on the end of a corner at the back post with James Lewis unable to reach the ball. Just on the hour mark, Nathan Sage conceded a penalty for a challenge on Connor Tinsley, with 21

UHLSPORT HELLENIC LEAGUE LATEST ROUND-UP 29th December 2018 Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West North Leigh United 3 Easington Sports 19
with goals from Callum Convey, Joe Eyre and Charlie Hill after a number of well worked moves. Sports certainly started much better in the second half and a change in formation provided better shape. Craig Robinson came on in midfield to add an extra physical presence. The goals came at regular intervals in the second half and Joe Eyre and Lloyd Sabin linked up superbly down the left. Eyre was able to offer much greater width and going up the slope he terrorised the full back delivering a number of good early balls into the box for Convey and Charlie Hill to run onto. Hill finished superbly including a diving header to first complete his second hatrick in two games before going on to get 5 by the end of the game.
Easington Sports recovered from a lack lustre start to this match to end 2018 on a winning note. Star of the show Charlie Hill notched 5 goals to make it 8 goals in 2 matches. The dynamic midfielder showed excellent touches and moved the ball quickly to constantly offer a threat in and around the North Leigh penalty area all game. Further goals from Joe Eyre, Craig Robinson and a hat rick for Callum Convey completed the scoring. After conceding only 6 goals in the whole of the league campaign so far, Easington got off to the worse possible start conceding in the opening 3 minutes of the match. A hopeful ball was latched onto by Bradley Walton and he showed good composure to slot his finish past Joe White. The game started off in feisty fashion and the early goal gave the young North Leigh side an extra spring in their step and a snap to their tackling. Unfortunately for the home side, Henry Chesterman saw red for showing too much aggression towards Dan Watkin and was sent off in the 11th minute. Sports drew level with soon after this incident through a welldirected strike from Charlie Hill from the edge of the box after showing good footwork to go around the defender.
Easington have therefore managed to rack up the goals and points in the games which many would have expected them to do during December. That said, they will need to show much greater concentration and discipline across the pitch than they did in this match with two very difficult matches coming up starting with Thornbury Town away this weekend. 26 December The Boxing Day festive fixtures started at 12:30pm with Ardley United hosting Premier Division leaders Brackley Town Saints at the Nolan Oil Ground. Three all after 90 minutes of play the Saints scored the winner in the first minute of added time. Home scorers Troy Bryan 14, Own Goal 51, Daniel West 90 - Away George Ball 26, Olly Goddard 36, Kyle Wynn 86, Ryan Knight 90+1.
This goal was not proving to be the catalyst for change for Sports and they continued to play poorly, trying to force pass and playing too long into the front two of Callum Convey and Joe Eyre. In fact, North Leigh took a deserved lead in the 24th minute after Easington failed to defend a routine ball into the box. Bradley Walton again showed good pace and skill to out muscle the defence before taking a shot that Joe White could only parry out to Ashley Andrews for a simple tap in. The game was certainly end to end and in Sports eventually built up the pressure which came from an improvement in passing and the additional composure of Joe Coleman in midfield. Sports ended the half on top
In the only Division One fixture Chalvey Sports welcomed runaway table tappers Burnham to Arbour Park. Both teams had played 13 games before today's fixture and 18 points seperated them. The points differential remained the same at full time with the teams drawing 3-3. Home scorers Richard Jeffrey 41, Bryan Taylor 62, Liam Hulait 81 - Away Dean Allen 22, 23, Auden Higgs 67.
