MANAGER’S NOTES

Good afternoon and welcome to the Mundy Playing Fields for today's Hellenic League Supplementary Cup match against Fairford Town. This is our last chance of cup success and it's a great chance to again test ourselves against higher level opposition. Thank you to everyone who traveled to Banbury to see us play Easington, unfortunately it was a 0-0 draw, but it was a crucial point in our promotion challenge. Thank you for you continued support. THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

MATCH REPORT THORNBURY TOWN 4 DAVIS (3), BUDD

ALMONDSBURY 1 Saturday 2nd March 2019 Hellenic League Division One West

way into the box but his goalbound effort was cleared off the line with Merry beaten. In the dying moments of the half Almonds clawed their way back into the game when a long ball over the defence bounced awkwardly for Kurtis Parkin and Nick Rugman was able to chip the ball over the keepers head and into the net to make it 2-1.

A sizeable crowd at the Mundy Fields witnessed one of Thornbury Town’s best performances of the season as they put 4 goals past local rivals Almondsbury, at the same time keeping in touch with the league leaders.

The early stages of the second half saw the visitors pressing forward in search of an equaliser and although they enjoyed the majority of possession they weren’t able to get the better of the Town defence which was relatively untroubled. After 10 minutes Marcus Wormwell’s corner found Mark Viner but his looping shot was narrowly too high, whilst a minute later Wormwell’s shot clipped the post with Merry beaten. Davis and Lancastle then combined to set up Tom Webb but his effort was also too high.

The early exchanges were fairly even with the visitors mainly resorting to a long ball forward which led to Rugman firing wide of the post after 5 minutes while shortly after Lane’s shot was well saved by Kurtis Parkin at the foot of the post. Thorns were playing the more fluid football and a well-worked move saw them take the lead after 13 minutes. The ball was played up to Jim Brock and his clipped pass through the Almonds defence found Matt Davis who evaded keeper Jamie Merry’s challenge and slotted the ball into the net. Two minutes later it was Harry Brock providing the through ball for Matty Davis to again take the ball past Merry and steer the ball into the net.

However Thorns did extend their lead midway through the half when Nathan Sage’s through ball found Matt Davis, who beat his marker before firing past Merry for Town’s third goal of the afternoon. Play continued to swing from end to end and Wormwell was in action in the Thorns penalty area making a decisive challenge to deny Rugman a second goal. Asher Budd had a header saved by Merry but Thorns wrapped up the game 3 minutes from time when a Harry Brock pass found Marcus Wormwell who cut the ball across the face of the goal for Asher Budd to fire home from close range.

The visitors were visibly shaken and Thorns dominated proceedings and the back line was rarely troubled although Parkin made a comfortable save from Parr and Bisp fired over the bar when well placed. 5 minutes before the break a jinking Harry Brock run took him past a couple of defenders before shooting narrowly wide of the post, then Craig Lancastle set up Tom Webb who worked his 20

frantically cleared by Sabin whilst minutes later Matt Davis’ cross found Craig Lancastle but Town’s leading scorer couldn’t get his shot away and the danger was cleared. A frantic few minutes then saw the hosts waste a couple of good chances with Spaull having his shot saved by Parkin whilst moments later Grant’s close range shot was blocked by Sports striker Rose, who recovered quickly to get his own shot in which was superbly blocked by Nathan Sage. What could have been the turning point of the game came after 70 minutes when Matt Davis chased down a long ball and his cross was blocked by a defender’s hand in the penalty area, but despite Town’s protestations the referee, after a long consultation with his assistant, simply awarded a corner rather than a penalty. Having survived the incident Sports pressed forward themselves and Parkin had to be alert to tip a Convey effort over the bar and then a couple of minutes later Convey had a shot blocked by skipper Pete Fowler. The dying minutes saw Thorns have the best chances with Lancastle’s shot being spilled by keeper White but the loose ball was cleared before any Thorns players could react to the rebound whilst a Toby Bennett free kick caused some problems for the hosts before being cleared for a corner. At the end of the day Thorns were happy to come away with a point and a clean sheet against one of the best sides in the league, and both sides will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

Thornbury Town’s trip to Easington Sports saw a tight game end goalless with the strong wind making life difficult for both sides. However Town started on the front foot, almost taking the lead in the first minute when Tom Webb outpaced his marker before firing a low pass across the face of the goal that was missed by the home defence but as Matt Davis prepared to steer the ball into the net Sports’ Grant cleared the danger. The hosts gradually imposed themselves on the game and with the wind behind them looked to get a long ball beyond the Thorns defence but their passes were often overhit. 15 minutes in, Harry Brock’s through ball to Davis saw the striker make space for a shot from a tight angle but the ball hit the side netting. The latter stages of the half saw the hosts create a number of half chances but Town’s defence held firm with Pete Fowler clearing a shot from Coleman’s whilst 10 minutes before the break Nathan Sage cleared Watkin’s effort from just inside the penalty area. Sports almost took the lead in the last minute of the half when Sabin got his head to a corner but a combination of Fowler and Webb saw the effort cleared off the line. The second period saw Sports start brightly and Henry Rose had a header that was comfortably saved by Kurtis Parkin. Although they had the slope with them Thorns found it difficult to get out of their half but a dangerous looking cross from tom Webb was 21
