EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's Hellenic League match against Malmesbury Victoria. On behalf of everyone from the club, we hope you had a great christmas and new year! Thank you to everyone who traveled to Hereford last weekend. Unfortunately we didn't get the result we wished for, but it was great to see the lads finally getting to play some football after almost a month! Likewise, we haven't had a home game at all during December, so I'm sure the team will be looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd too!
Due to all of the postponements we now have 5 games in hand over top place Hereford Pegasus and 2 games in hand over today's opponents. However, a Malmesbury win today will see them leap frog us. Our twice-postponed Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy match against Patchway Town has been confirmed for this Tuesday night. Please come along to support, season ticket holders can attend for free and there's a reduced ticket price for other supporters. The winner of the tie will play Cribbs Reserves in a couple of weeks time. Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY
It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous
winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

MALMESBURY VICTORIA CLUB HISTORY
The Club was originally formed in 1898, and was known as Malmesbury Town, then Malmesbury United. Then in the 1960’s, amalgamated with a successful Swindon Club known as Swindon Victoria. The Club has played in various locations in and around the Town before eventu- ally settling on the present site, known as The Flying Monk Ground. The ground was previously owned by the pub known as The Flying Monk. There have been ups and downs over the past few years, but in 1999/2000 the Club was extremely successful with both Saturday sides winning their respective Leagues for the first time since 1974. The first team won the Wiltshire Premier League to clinch promotion to the Hellenic League, with the reserves winning the equivalent Junior Division to gain promotion to the Premier Division. During their first season in the Hellenic League the first team acquitted themselves well to finish 4th in the League. Since then things have been much harder to finish in the top half of the league, but in 2001/2002 the Club did win the Wiltshire Senior Cup. 2004/2005 saw the Club decide to start an Under 18’s team in the Wiltshire Floodlit League.
8
Thornbury Town v Malmesbury Victoria
The Club has made huge steps to improve the facilities, in the summer of 2004 the giant step of installing floodlights was completed and the summer of 2005 saw the complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse. In the 2006/07 season, we were unlucky not to get promotion into the Hellenic Premier League, finishing in fourth place. The following season 2007/08, we had a poor start, and half way through, after a change of management finished the season in 15th place. The 2008/09 season saw the Club finish in the runners-up spot in Division 1 West, and with it came promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division, this being the Club’s highest level of football in its history. However, the Club was relegated at the end of 2009/10 as the ground had not reached the required standard to continue in that division. After dropping down and asking local legend, Wayne Kibble to run the senior sides and return a focus to local players, the club saw great success in the Wilts premier league, ending in being champions in 2014/15 season and gaining promotion to the Western League for 2016/17 season and finishing in a very respectable 9th position. Following a mid-table finish in 2017/18, League restructuring has seen the club return to the Uhlsport Hellenic League in Division One West where we look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones. The Club is now in the early discussion stages to move to a new ground close to the present one, but high enough not to have to worry about flooding.

GUEST ARTICLE FROM THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER
However, contemplating promotion is a problem most would love, notably John Sheridan and Dean Keates, managers of Chesterfield and Wrexham respectively. For them, I would giftwrap a magic wand.
SANTA Claus has been and New Year's Resolutions made. The hectic festive period is over in earnest but for Non-League clubs everywhere, the hard work is just about to begin.
Incredibly, these two giants of Non-League, pre-season favourites to reclaim their Football League places this season, find themselves languishing in the bottom four of the table and staring down the barrel of football in the sixth tier.
So, what can the man with the big white beard possibly bring your club to make the season run-in easier? Or what resolutions could your manager or chairman make to fulfil your club's ambitions?
Every so often, the Spireites and the Dragons threaten to show the kind of form we know they are capable of but neither can seem to nail down a consistent run to pull themselves out of trouble.
Here's just a few light-hearted ideas that you might want to put on your wishlist for 2020... For Bromley and Harrogate Town (and perhaps to a lesser extent Sutton United), they're getting to the point where they will need a Plan B. Since installing 3G surfaces, all three clubs have been victims of their own success with both Bromley and Harrogate lying firmly in the National League play-off places going into 2020.
Sheridan and Keates are running out time, it's time for the rabbit to emerge from the hat. Winging its way over to Gloucester City and Worcester City for 2020, a return ticket home with both clubs nearing long-awaited homecomings after so long in exile.
But with the EFL refusing to back down and allow club's entry with 3G surfaces, Bromley and Harrogate will have to think again if they are to clear the final promotion hurdle. Sadly, it will mean ripping up the pitches and starting all over again with a grass surface, meaning a loss in vital potential revenue. Safe to say the boardrooms at both Hayes Lane and Wetherby Road will be coming out in cold sweats come April.
How about a fairytale story for National League leaders Barrow AFC, with the Bluebirds dreaming of a famous Football League return after nearly 50 years in the wilderness, or maybe another case of champagne for Marc White, looking to secure an incredible 12th promotion in charge of Dorking Wanderers?
If you're interested in helping the club in any capacity, speak to a committee member. All help is appreciated.

H. BROCK, FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN, SAGE
CHELTENHAM SARACENS

EVANS Thornbury welcomed Cheltenham to the Mundy’s on Saturday in what was a top two clash based on fewest points dropped. Kurtis Parkin and Luke Franklin had recovered from injury and Jacob Farthing took the No.9 shirt - replacing Craig Lancastle who was getting married in Mexico. The home side started well, with both their movement and passing quicker than their opponents, and the first ten minutes saw a header from Sage and a shot from Bennett go over the bar On 12 minutes a chipped through-ball by Franklin found Harry Brock who rounded the keeper and slotted home from a narrow angle for the lead. Thornbury were playing neat attacking football and Marcus Wormwell went close after a back heel from Brock who himself went close soon after Cheltenham had their first effort on 23 minutes, a shot just wide, with their captain booked shortly afterwards – kicking the ball away in frustration. The Thornbury pressure was resulting in free kicks around the edge of the box – on 25’ Franklin hit the outside of the post but three

minutes later re-calibrated his sights and found the top corner – two-nil The two goal margin wasn’t to last long though, a fine move down the Cheltenham right and a good ball in-field found John Evans who reduced the deficit with a well struck shot from just outside the area. The game had started to open up slightly and following another good phase of possession a well executed pull back from the by-line by Wormwell was met by Brandon Benjamin to slot home from the edge of the box – 3-1 and that was how the first period ended. With the message from the management that there was no need to go back out and win the game all over again, Thornbury defended with two banks of four – quite happy to concede a certain amount of possession knowing they were capable of dealing with any threat In fact, the half started at the other end of the pitch anyway with Benjamin forcing a couple of good saves. Mid way through the second half a Cheltenham free kick was defended well and Thornbury broke to win a corner at the opposite end. The corner saw a looping header from Nathan Sage evade the ‘keeper and despite his efforts to convince the referee
it had gone over the goal was given – four-one Farthing had a couple of efforts towards the end of the half and Dan Parry replaced the carded Joe Guest with ten to go. A late challenge also saw Bennett shown yellow and he was perhaps lucky not to see a different colour in the resulting melee. Instantly replaced by Mark Viner to avoid any further action he’ll miss the next game anyway due to totting up The five minutes of stoppage time saw a string of Cheltenham corners, but Thornbury held firm to see out what was a surprisingly comfortable win against last seasons runnersup.

LANCASTLE Thornbury's trip up to Hereford saw them face top side Pegasus who had continued to play at their excellent new 4G facility despite the recent rain affecting other clubs. Thornbury had not played for a month and looked rusty, failing to look after the ball well, but did have the first chance of the match when Tom Webb found Craig Lancastle whose shot in turn could only find the foot of the post. A couple of Town chances did come and go Jacob Farthing shooting straight at Powell in the home goal and a Franklin free-kick to the left of the 18 yard box was punched clear. So, the first half hour fairly even but all that changed soon after when firstly an excellent strike from Zac Sirrell found the top corner from 25 yards and then four minutes later his free-kick from the edge of the box was deflected off the wall into the bottom corner to double his & Hereford's tally. Franklin had the chance to halve the deficit just before the break but his free-kick was straight at Powell so the sides turned round at 2-0 to the home side. Midfielder Rhys Hodgson replaced right-back Dan Parry as Thornbury switched formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 and this paid off almost immediately when a Farthing run saw him pulled back on the edge of the box. Lancastle stepped up and his shot found the bottom corner.
26
Thornbury Town v Malmesbury Victoria
He could have made it two on the hour mark but couldn't get the ball out of his feet and the opportunity went begging. Thornbury were now the better side although a string of corners failed to produce a chance and an effort from Joe Guest was wide of the mark and he picked up a yellow card shortly afterwards for a late tackle. Hereford introduced another lively forward on 70 minutes but the pace of Sage & Guest dealt with any danger 76' saw a double substitution from Thornbury with Lancastle & Franklin replaced by Viner and new signing Fraser Moss from Tytherington. The last quarter of an hour saw chances for both sides with Brandon Benjamin forcing a corner from his and Harry Brock shooting over after a long run. The four minutes of added time were whittled away by Hereford and they were unsurprisingly delighted when the final whistle blew. Thornbury had edged the second half but Hereford Pegasus are too good a side to give a 2-0 lead to. They now have a ten point lead at the top of the table but Thornbury have five games in hand but with the chasing pack closing up and the bottom clubs improving week on week the points in the bag look useful.
