MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Mundy Playing Fields for his afternoon's Hellenic League League game against Malmesbury Victoria. Back to league action today and we play one of the stronger teams in the league today. Malmesbury will not only be looking to rise up the table, but will be looking to get us back for the 3-1 win we achieved at their place at the beginning of October. I'm confident of a strong performance from the lads today to set us up for a crucial run of games between now and the new year. A floodlit cup game on Tuesday at home against AFC Aldermaston is followed by another home game against North Leigh in the league next weekend. Hopefully we'll be going into these games in high spirits. I hope you all enjoy today's game! Andy Davies, Manager

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.
narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.
Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.
In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.
The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.
Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.
During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 8
a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.
highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.
2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.
2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.
In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

Thornbury Town V Malmesbury Victoria
MALMESBURY VICTORIA CLUB HISTORY The Club was originally formed in 1898, and was known as Malmesbury Town, then Malmesbury United. Then in the 1960’s, amalgamated with a successful Swindon Club known as Swindon Victoria.
In the 2006/07 season, we were unlucky not to get promotion into the Hellenic Premier League, finishing in fourth place. The following season 2007/08, we had a poor start, and half way through, after a change of management finished the season in 15th place.
The Club has played in various locations in and around the Town before eventually settling on the present site, known as The Flying Monk Ground. The ground was previously owned by the pub known as The Flying Monk.
The 2008/09 season saw the Club finish in the runners-up spot in Division 1 West, and with it came promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division, this being the Club’s highest level of football in its history. However, the Club was relegated at the end of 2009/10 as the ground had not reached the required standard to continue in that division.
There have been ups and downs over the past few years, but in 1999/2000 the Club was extremely successful with both Saturday sides winning their respective Leagues for the first time since 1974. The first team won the Wiltshire Premier League to clinch promotion to the Hellenic League, with the reserves winning the equivalent Junior Division to gain promotion to the Premier Division.
After dropping down and asking local legend, Wayne Kibble to run the senior sides and return a focus to local players, the club saw great success in the Wilts premier league, ending in being champions in 2014/15 season and gaining promotion to the Western League for 2016/17 season and finishing in a very respectable 9th position.
During their first season in the Hellenic League the first team acquitted themselves well to finish 4th in the League. Since then things have been much harder to finish in the top half of the league, but in 2001/2002 the Club did win the Wiltshire Senior Cup. 2004/2005 saw the Club decide to start an Under 18’s team in the Wiltshire Floodlit League.
Following a mid-table finish in 2017/18, League re-structuring has seen the club return to the Uhlsport Hellenic League in Division One West where we look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones. The Club is now in the early discussion stages to move to a new ground close to the present one, but high enough not to have to worry about flooding.
The Club has made huge steps to improve the facilities, in the summer of 2004 the giant step of installing floodlights was completed and the summer of 2005 saw the complete refurbishment of the Clubhouse. 12

MATCH REPORTS NEWENT TOWN 4 BARRY, MICULA, HIGGS, A ALLARD
THORNBURY TOWN 2 H BROCK (2) Tuesday 27th November 2018 Division ONE Subsidiary Cup
The second half started in the worst possible way with Nathan Sage being sent off after just 7 minutes and the hosts used their man advantage to full effect and Parkin pulled off another great save to deny Gibbs. However on the hour mark Newent extended their lead when James set up Higgs to rifle home a cracker from the edge of the box that gave Parkin no chance. Ten minutes later Newent extended their lead further when Higgs set up Alex Allard to steer his shot into the net.
On a damp and misty night in Newent, Thorns struggled to get to grips with a hardworking and energetic Newent side playing under their newly installed floodlights for the first time. The hosts pressed right from the start and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 4th minute, Barry bundling the ball home from a corner. Rickard almost doubled the lead a minute later but fired over the bar with just Kurtis Parkin to beat.
However to their credit Town’s ten men battled to the end and Craig Lancastle went close, Allard saving his shot at the foot of the post. Three minutes from time Thorns did grab a consolation when Harry Brock ran clear of the home defence and fired past Allard and into the corner of the net. Despite going close on another couple of occasions, Thorns couldn’t find the net again and finished their Subsidiary cup competition with 3 wins and 3 defeats from their 6 games.
Harry Brock was put through by brother Jim in the 10th minute but his shot went wide, whilst Craig Lancastle had an effort blocked. Lancastle then hit the post having been put clear by Dave Jones. Midway through the half Town drew level when Lancastle set up Harry Brock who fired past home keeper Ross Allard. Thorns weren’t level for long when Tom Webb was adjudged to have tripped a Newent player in the area and Micula made no mistake from resultant penalty. However as the game continued to flow from end to end, Thorns almost grabbed another equaliser but this time Pete Fowler’s header was tipped onto the bar by Allard. It was the hosts who had the last efforts of the half with Parkin pulling off good saves from Gibbs and Rickard.

THORNBURY TOWN 2 FRANKLIN, H BROCK
VIRGINIA WATER 1 HILL Saturday 1st December 2018 Supplementary Cup 1st Round
The visitors clawed their way back into the game in the 37th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Josh Hill’s set piece took a wicked deflection off the wall to wrong foot Parkin and reduce Town’s lead. 5 minutes later Hill almost equalised from another freekick which seemed to be heading for the top corner of the net but Parkin got a hand to the ball and push it out for a corner.
Premier Division side Virginia Water, making the long trip from Surrey, were the visitors to the Mundy Fields on Saturday, but their journey was fruitless as Town progressed to the next round with an odd goal in three victory. It was an entertaining game with Virginia Water playing some good football but lacking a cutting edge with Town’s defence coping with any threat their opponents created.
The second half saw Thorns continue to control a lot of the game and Luke Franklin’s early effort went wide of the post whilst on the hour mark his run and cross into the 6 yard box saw Marcus Wormwell blaze the ball wide when it looked easier to score. Play swung from end to end with neither side able to create any clear cut chances, although Thorns skipper Pete Fowler blocked another effort by Hill, whilst at the other end a great move led to a real goalmouth scramble with any of four Thorns players being denied.
Thorns started brightly and Harry Brock had a shot blocked by Chambers in the early moments of the game, but only 5 minutes had passed when Town took the lead. A fine move down the right saw Craig Lancastle lay off the ball to Luke Franklin who steered the ball into the net giving Jones in Water’s goal, no chance. 5 minutes later Harry Brock appeared to be brought down in the penalty area in full flight but the referee waved play on. At this stage Thorns were controlling the game and the visitors were restricted to long range efforts which posed no problem for Kurtis Parkin.
As the visitors pushed forward in search of the goal that would take the game into extra time, Thorns were able to exploit the gaps at the back with Dave Jones’ effort, after a jinking run, being blocked and then Wormwell’s shot was saved by Jones.
Town nearly doubled their lead after 25 minutes when Nathan Sage’s effort from Marcus Wormwell’s corner was cleared off the line by Samyint whilst moments later Jones denied Lancastle with a good save. However Thorns didn’t have to wait much longer for the second goal, when a move down the left saw Harry Brock jink past the visitors defence and fire past Jones.
In the end a good win for Town against Premier Division opposition and they now await the draw for the 2nd Round, but hoping for another home draw.
