Thornbury Town v New College Swindon

EDITOR'S NOTES Good evening and welcome everyone to today's game against New College Academy. Our third home game in a week sees us play New College who currently are bottom of the table. Previous matches against them however show they can be a tricky side to break down if the right side show up! We'll be hoping that we can score more than a few goals today though, as we look to catchup our rivals at the top of the table in terms of goal difference as well as points. I can see it being very tight at the top again this season, so a good goal diffence can be equal to an extra point come May.

Thank you to everyone who has booked their place on the coach down to Downton next Saturday. It'll be good to have a good away following supporting the team as we look to progress to the Second Round of the FA Vase. Today we welcome our Under 12 Girls as mascots. Jack and his team only started two years ago with casual training sessions and are now a fully-fledged team playing in the Bristol Girls League. We hope they enjoy today and hopefully inspires them to carry on with Thornbury Town, and maybe be our first ever women's team! Enjoy the game! Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY

It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final

4

Thornbury Town v New College Swindon

of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous

winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.

The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

NEW COLLEGE SWINDON CLUB HISTORY

New College opened in 1984 with a football team playing friendly football fixtures on Wednesday afternoons. Football developed into an Academy in 1996 and between then and 2002, when it became a Senior Club in its own right, New College explored joint ventures with Swindon Town FC, Forest Green Rovers and Swindon Supermarine. New College finished mid-table in their one season in the Hellenic League in 2002-03 before ground issues moved the club into the Wiltshire Football League. The academy is managed and coaching directed on a day to day basis by Ian Howell who is part of the Chelsea u21s assistant manager. He is assisted by Matt Cosnett, a former college player and of Swindon Supermarine. Also by ex players Harvey Scholes and Ryan Elliott Students join New College to follow an educational program for one, two or occasionally three years, together with their football coaching and competition. It is not an Old Boys club, although in any season one or two ‘leavers’ may continue before making the step up to what we hope is a higher level of football. The academy currently runs three representative sides. The under 17's play in the Wiltshire Youth Floodlit league on Thursday nights. This side is managed by Mick Burke. The under 18’s play in the South West Counties Youth league versus academy sides

8

from all of the major non league sides in the South West. This side is managed/ coached by Mick Burke and Adi Wilkinson. The open age squad now plays in the Uhlsport Hellenic Football League, step 6 of the non league pyramid. This side is managed by Mark Teasdale. Mark is assisted by his coach Matt Cosnett. Ian Howell, Matt Cosnett and Eric Stott work behind the scenes. Ian works as the club treasurer, Matt fulfils the role of club secretary and Eric works fulfilling the role of Match day Secretary for the Hellenic League side. The Charter Standard Scheme is best practice guide that sets standards of coaching, administration and child protection for all clubs outside the Football League and Premier League. As a benchmark for quality, it will improve the playing experience for all. New College Academy achieved this prestigious award in 2009. The FA Charter Standard Clubs program, supported by FA Community Partner McDonald's, was launched in February 2001 and is a core component of The FA Football Development program. The project is aimed at all clubs outside the Football League and Premier League, players, children and parents find a club in their local area that meets FA standards. GUEST ARTICLE

NON-LEAGUE PAPER By David Richardson All too often in the aftermath of alleged incidents of racism, we see clubs and leagues put out an obligatory statement and then try to move on from the matter as swiftly as possible. But, following the latest blight on the game, Hartlepool United deserve credit for the way they responded to the unsavoury scenes we saw during their National League game with Dover Athletic when striker Inih Effiong was subject to racist abuse and gestures from spectators in the Pools end. His team-mate Ricky Modeste was also caught up in the incident, while Pools midfielder Gus Mafuta was clearly upset by what he heard as he told the supporter to get out of the ground. An arrest has been made by Cleveland Police and we hope a heavy sanction is handed out should the person be found guilty. They have no place in our football grounds and we all have a responsibility to unite and drive them away. Both Dover and the National League made their feelings clear in statements released after the game. Dover also pointed out that blame should not be shifted on to the victim. Effiong celebrated his goal in front of the fans – but that doesn’t give irate people a pass to racial abuse. Pools reacted well too. With their own players unhappy with what played out, chairman Raj Singh visited their homes on Sunday to talk through what happened. Then, their game against Chesterfield last Tuesday night was used to send out a message.

22

Thornbury Town v New College Swindon

The front of their programme and banners carried logos with ‘Love Pools Hate Racism’. The club also carried an interview with Mafuta, where he was able to put across how he felt that afternoon when he saw supporters of the club he represents abusing a fellow footballer for the colour of his skin. It would have been easy to shy away from it but Pools rightly gave him a platform. Effiong told The NLP: “You hear it and see it out of their mouths. Understand, the fans looked so angry. I’m thinking, ‘How can I make you that angry that you want to give me racial abuse?’ It wasn’t on and quite upsetting. Even their players were devastated by it. “We considered walking off. Our gaffer asked if we wanted to, their gaffer said they would support us if we wanted to. But we just said, ‘No, let’s get on with the game’.” Both Effiong and Mafuta feel it is vital to keep up the conversation. It is important their voices are heard. Action needs to be firm and strong to eradicate this scar on society and football. Non-League Day has been one of the great success stories of Non-League football since its inception by James Doe. A simple idea, but a really good one that encourages fans to get down to their local club during an international break each season. It’s a day that puts Non-League football up in lights for those who may not normally consider it. It shows people there are good games often only ten minutes away or so from their front doors. Clubs have run promotion offers for entry, organised special events at the ground, leagues have arranged groundhops and one club even had ferret racing one year! It’s a great opportunity to take along a debutant - we’re sure they will love it too.

TODAY'S MASCOTS

UNDER 12 GIRLS Rome wasn’t built in a day and right now we are building the foundations of what could be an established girl’s set up for Thornbury Town FC. Two years ago I started with three players and a vision. The vision was to create an environment where girls could participate in a friendly football session weekly, having fun in a safe environment and developing their skills and knowledge of the game. Over the two years we have exceeded our vision by joining the Bristol Girls League this season, playing

24

Thornbury Town v New College Swindon

as under 12’s. We have a great bunch of girls that are being recognised by other teams as a positive and respectable team that doesn’t give up. Some players have played Football for years, whilst others have just started. They are all enjoying representing Girls Football and Thornbury Town FC. With the support of the club, our goal is to increase participation for girls football to ensure the girls game stays in Thornbury Town Football Club. We welcome new players at any level to come and give it a go. We thank the club for the support we have received and for having us as their mascots for this match. THORNBURY TOWN 5 BROCK (3), LANCASTLE (2)

HEREFORD PEGASUS 3 LANGFORD, BURGESS With the rest of the division involved in the League Cup this was a chance for Thornbury to improve their league position with a win at home to Hereford Pegasus. A couple of changes for Thornbury with Nathan Sage returning to the centre of defence after injury, Rhys Hodgson starting on the right and a strong bench. The crowd at the Mundy’s didn’t have to wait long for the first action when in the first minute Brandon Benjamin played the ball forward to Harry Brock who finished clinically. With a well worked free-kick straight from the training ground Hereford couldn’t convert after four minutes but only a few minutes later hesitation in the home box resulted in a clearance rebounding off a Hereford player into the goal – 1-1 and people still coming through the turnstile. The Hereford No.9 almost made it 2-1 when his shot flashed past the far post but it was Thornbury who re-took the lead when Brock outpaced the full-back and crossed for Craig Lancastle to score and increasing his scoring run to 8 games on the bounce. The impressive Hereford No.9 shot across goal once more but again it was the home side who scored the next goal when just

before the half-hour Brock cut in from the left and curled the ball into the far corner. Hereford weren’t finished for the half though and the No.9 finally got his goal on 35 mins with the No.11 failing to make the most of an opportunity to equalise just before the halftime whistle. 3-2 to Thornbury at the break in a wide-open game Tom Webb replaced Ollie Rawnsley (hamstring) for the second half and for a while the game quietened down – a Thornbury corner and a Joe Guest booking for a professional foul the only things of note. This all changed on 62 minutes when Brock was brought down as he rounded the ‘keeper and Lancastle made no mistake from the spot. A good spell of pressure then followed from the Hereford side with Kurtis Parkin in goal regularly punching clear and claiming crosses and on 85’ this was rewarded with a goal – 4-3 and a few Thornbury nerves… Just before the final whistle those nerves were relaxed when Parkin claimed an assist as Brock got his foot to a long goal kick and the ball rolled into the net for his hat-trick.

Tuesday 1st October - Uhlsport Hellenic League Div 1 West

THORNBURY TOWN 2 WORMWELL, HODGSON

HEREFORD LADS CLUB 0 After beating Hereford Pegasus three days earlier Thornbury were looking to complete a double over the league's Hereford clubs with victory at home to Hereford Lads Club. With both teams amongst the favourites for promotion this season it was always going to be a close game and shots on target were certainly at a premium in the first period with Brandon Benjamin having the best attempt when the ‘keeper saved with his feet. Nil-nil at the break and although the possession was shared equally that didn’t include much for Thornbury in their opponent’s half. After no corners in the first half it took only a minute for Hereford to force the first of the game when their forward rode two tackles looking to shoot rather than try to claim a penalty. Corner number two came 5 minutes later and Parkin in the home goal was forced to punch clear and the visitors had the better of the half up to the hour mark. However, slightly against the run of play, Marcus Wormwell then cut in from the right and his goal-bound effort took a big deflection off the defender's head into the net.

26

Thornbury Town v New College Swindon

A few minutes later a home free-kick came to nothing but on 67 minutes everyone stopped when it looked as if the ball was rolling out of play but instead hit the corner flag and stayed in. Thornbury were the more alert and the ball was worked back to the edge of the box from where Rhys Hodgson hit a great shot into the bottom corner to double the lead. There then followed a scrappy period of play with tempers starting to flare and the referee was forced to brandish his yellow card to several players from each side. The last chance of the evening fell to Craig Lancastle, but he was unable to convert leaving him goal-less in a match for the first time since 22nd April. Full time 2-0 and on the balance of play over the full 90 minutes a fair result. The win means Thornbury remain in sixth spot but still with a game in hand on the teams above them.
