Thornbury Town V Pewsey Vale

THORNBURY TOWN CLUB HISTORY It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s.

narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final.

Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77.

In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League.

The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 198990 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received.

Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed.

During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing 6

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history.

highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin. The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continues to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17.

2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football.

2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in their history.

In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their

Thornbury Town V Pewsey Vale

PEWSEY VALE CLUB HISTORY The club was formed in 1945 as Pewsey Y. M. but changed its name to Pewsey Vale F.C. in 1948. There is also evidence that there was a six a side group that played under the name of Pewsey Boys as early as 1921.

In recent years, the team has been eligible for the FA Vase, with their best performances being the three seasons in which they have reached the first round proper. Ground

Promoted to the Great Mills League as champions of the Adkey Wiltshire Cup competition, Pewsey were one of the first clubs to benefit from the pyramid system by joining the Screwfix League system and then Hellenic League Division One West in 2001. The Club immediately won promotion to the Premier League after finishing runners up to Hook Norton, before being relegated back to Division One West. After 3 seasons in the Premier Division the club were relegated back to Division one and after a further years of struggle, at the end of the 2008/9 season the Club took the step to drop down to the Wessex league in order to rebuild under the stewardship of Adi Holcombe and Lewis Taylor.

The Club play their home games at the Recreation Ground, Kings Corner, Ball Road, Pewsey, SN9 5BS. In 1950, the club took up the offer of a lease on part of the village's Recreation Ground but it wasn't until the early 1980s that a permanent clubhouse was built, unaided by grants and so mainly through the generosity of several local businesses. The ground was substantially improved with the help of FA grants in the close season of 2002 to meet Hellenic Premier League standards. This included floodlighting, undercover seating for 50 people and hardstanding all round the perimeter of the playing area. Notable former players

The 2009/10 season resulted in the winning of the Wiltshire Premier League Cup. The next season Pewsey Vale successfully applied to join the Wessex League structure and in the 2010-11 season started playing in the Wessex League Division One.

• Jon Guthrie (2001–2012): Progressed through the youth system at Pewsey Vale before making first-team debut aged 16. Signed professionally at Crewe Alexandra in 2012. Now playing for Walsall in League One. • Murray Fishlock (2007): Played in the Football League for Hereford United before finishing his career with Pewsey Vale in 2007.

In the season 2017/2018 Pewsey applied to re join the Hellenic league system, finishing a respectable 4th. As Pewsey Y M, the club were able to enter the FA Cup for a few seasons just after World War II, but never progressed past the First Qualifying Round.

MATCH REPORTS THORNBURY TOWN 1 LANCASTLE

KIDLINGTON DEV. 2 MORTON, PARKER Saturday 6th April 2019 Hellenic League Division One West

The game flowed from end to end and Denilson Silva had a shot saved by Benjamin, who also pulled off a good save from Deabill on the half hour mark. Minutes later Silva was put clear, but with just the keeper to beat shot straight at Benjamin, who saved comfortably. Five minutes before the break a Pete Fowler header from Jim Brock’s corner was cleared off the line but the visitors were good value for their lead at the half time whistle.

Thornbury Town’s title ambitions were dealt a blow on Saturday when a much improved Kidlington side edged a narrow win. Having beaten Kidlington 4-0 away just two weeks ago, Town went into the game full of confidence, but it was the visitors who made the early running. Right from the kick off, Kidlington gave Thorns no time on the ball quickly closing them down all over the pitch. As a result Town couldn’t play their usual flowing football, but it was they who had the first chance when Matt Davies’ shot was saved by the visitors keeper Lacey, and Harry Block, following up, had his effort blocked.

The second half saw Thorns start brightly and Lancastle had a good chance to level after a couple of minutes from Jim Brock’s freekick but couldn’t get enough power in his shot. Mark Viner’s shot from the edge of the box went narrowly wide whilst Dave Jones had two efforts blocked on the line. On 20 minutes Town almost levelled when Nathan Sage’s powerful header was superbly tipped over the bar by Lacey.

The visitors came close on 6 minutes when Callum Rice, following a weaving run, had his shot saved by stand-in keeper Brandon Benjamin, but a minute later Kidlington took the lead when they broke down the left and the ball was played into Aaron Morton who slotted the ball past Benjamin. Thorns struggled to make any impression on the game although Craig Lancastle and Matt Davies both had efforts that went wide.

However a couple of minutes later Thorns finally equalised after Matt Davis was brought down in the penalty area, Craig Lancastle giving Lacey no chance from the resultant spot kick. The visitors had a great chance to take the lead again within a few minutes after Deabill went down under a challenge from Benjamin and the referee awarded another penalty. However Town’s keeper redeemed himself pulling off a superb save from Callum Rice’s kick. 20

a thornburytownfc.co.uk tf @thornburytownfc Substitute Asher Budd worked his way into space but his shot, under pressure, went just wide of the post, whilst at the other end Walton steered his shot into the side netting. With just 5 minutes remaining the referee awarded the third penalty of the game when Joe Guest was judged to have fouled one of the visitors strikers and this time Jordan Parker was given the responsibility, making no mistake from the spot.

Thorns pressed forward in search of a late equaliser and thought they had a good shout for a penalty themselves when Harry brock went down under a heavy challenge. However they were leaving spaces at the back and Walton, with just an empty net in front of him contrived to miss the goal completely.

PEWSEY VALE 0 THORNBURY TOWN 2 LANCASTLE (2) Saturday 13th April 2019 Hellenic League Division One West

penalty area found Lancastle who teed up the ball for Dave Jones but his goal bound effort was deflected over the bar by Turner.

Thorns were not at their best for Saturday’s trip to Pewsey, with the hosts proving better than their lowly league position suggested. However Town made the perfect start when they took the lead after 5 minutes. Toby Bennett had already fired narrowly wide when Luke Franklin’s crossfield pass found Joe Guest, whose surge into the penalty area saw him brought down. Craig Lancastle stepped up to take the resultant penalty, giving Lavis no chance from the spot.

The second half saw the hosts a different proposition as they dominated play from the start, twice Brandon Benjamin came to Town’s rescue saving shots from Turner and Banks. Town found it difficult to break out of their own half as Pewsey continued to push forward in search of a goal. Turner had another good chance but fired over the bar and he and Banks had further long range efforts but generally Thorns defence coped with the pressure.

Harry Brock then fired over the bar when he latched on to a poor clearance from ForceJones but on 20 minutes Thorns doubled their lead with what could well be their goal of the season. A move down the left saw the ball played to Lancastle and Town’s leading scorer lashed in a shot from the left of the penalty area into the top corner of the net. Pewsey were limited to one effort from Flippance that went wide of Town’s goal, but five minutes before the break a Tom Webb cross into the

They had the chance to put the game beyond Pewsey when a quick counter attack saw Asher Budd and Matt Davis link up but Lavis managed to save Budd’s effort and a couple of minutes later Davis shot narrowly wide with just Lavis to beat. However Town held on to secure all three points. 21

NEW COLLEGE SWINDON 1 MAZZOTA

THORNBURY TOWN 5 LANCASTLE, BUDD, WORMWELL, VINER, SAGE Monday 15th April 2019 Hellenic League Division One West

Town started the second half on the front foot and 4 minutes in, a good build up saw the ball played out to Marcus Wormwell who fired home from 10 yards out. Rockett then had a shot saved before Joe Guest was judged to have fouled Kusahl in the penalty area, Mazzotta making no mistake from the spot kick. However Town restored their advantage a couple of minutes later when Mark Viner steered home from Matt Davis’ pass.

Thorns trip to bottom side New College wasn’t quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests with Town finding it difficult to settle on a bobbly pitch against quick, energetic opposition. The hosts skipper, Mazzotta had a goalbound effort saved by Brandon Benjamin under the bar with another effort going narrowly over the bar. Thorns settled their nerves a little when they took the lead on 16 minutes, Asher Budd heading home Toby Bennett’s free-kick.

Rockett had another effort that was pushed on to the post by Benjamin before Thorns wrapped up the game with 15 minutes left, Nathan Sage heading home from Nathan Irwin’s corner. Toby Bennett had an effort saved by Harper before an Irwin effort rattled the crossbar with the keeper beaten.

They doubled their lead 10 minutes later, Craig Lancastle controlling Nathan Sage’s ball into the area, before turning and firing past Jack Harper. Harry Brock and Matt Davis both had efforts that went just the wrong side of the woodwork but the hosts were still a threat when they broke quickly and Benjamin had to be alert to tip a Kushal effort over the bar just before the break.
